Post-Election Thoughts from Cook's Corner
Posted by Steve Cook on 11.07.2008

Even though the polls told me it would happen, I didn't really believe it. I guess I had grown used to supporting the losing side in national elections while everybody around me rejoiced. Being a moderate liberal in Northern Kentucky can be pretty lonely sometimes. I'm usually surrounded by people who think Bush does a good job because he sends them tax rebate checks. As long as they have more money and those pesky gays don't get married, it's all good.

Yes, I know there are a lot of intelligent conservatives out there. I've met some of them, and a few of them I even consider friends. But, these are not the types of people that I typically find myself associating with. The types of people I end up talking to buy into the notion that Barack Obama is a dirty socialist that's going to take all of their money and give it away. They believe that Obama will magically end elections so he can be President forever. They're very easily persuaded by morons on talk radio that yell about the coming of the apocalypse every four years but forget who's really in charge. I don't know if they noticed or not, but for six out of the last eight years Republicans had control of the executive, legislative & judicial branches. This didn't stop them from complaining when something went wrong and blaming Democrats for it even when they didn't really have power to do anything. And once the Looney Left got control of the legislative branch, suddenly they were the ones driving things into the ground. I guess they've never heard of checks and balances, which I remember first hearing about in fourth grade. Don't worry guys, you've still got the Surpreme Court, and something tells me that Thomas & Scalia aren't going anywhere. When the world ends, all that will be left are cocaroaches, Cher, Thomas & Scalia. You heard it here first.

And on a side note, how come all I ever hear about is the media being biased towards liberals when the conservatives have their own news network and have talk radio on lockdown? Maybe it's just different for me because I work in Cincinnati, where most of the citizens think it's 1988, not 2008. Coincindentally, 1988 was the last time the Cincinnati Bengals made the Super Bowl. Maybe they want to leave the memories alone? I'm just saying, I hear a lot more right-wingers on TV & radio than left-wingers. Am I the only one? The libs do have the Internet sewn up pretty well, as many of our commenters will tell you.

Listen, I'm not going to tell you the left has all the answers. I can't say I'm a huge Nancy Pelosi fan, guys like Jesse Jackson & Al Sharpton give me the willies, and frankly I like the idea of a smaller, more effective government. Unfortunately, the Republicans don't seem to believe in that anymore. I guess I wouldn't mind all of their new and exciting government spending if it was going somewhere other than a war so far has been more trouble than it's worth. (But, it does sound like things are turning around, and I hope they continue to do so.)

Ashish has made a brilliant point in some recent commentaries that sum up why I haven't joined most of the rest of my family in the Republican Party. They've closed their doors to so many different types of people in order to pander to their kind of people. From a political standpoint, this makes no sense, and I've always been the kind of person to not care about race and gender and superficial things like that. I also don't care if people are from cities or the country, though I admit that if I had the choice I'd probably go out to the middle of the farmland and set me up a nice farm. But as somebody who was usually picked last on the playground for sporting events and as somebody who's been rejected by more women than I care to remember, I can tell you that being left out sucks. If you're not willing to open up your party to everybody, you're not going to win. Simple as that.

It kinda sucks that I can't share my feelings about the election with most people I know. My family for the most part is in denial, my mom wouldn't even watch the election coverage. I would call my grandparents, but I'm afraid of how they've reacted to a black man being elected President. They had a hard enough time dealing with the fact I had a black roommate in college. My friend the Penguin has been reduced to posting articles in the Politics Forum about how the world is "rejoincing" over Obama's victory. He's not taking it very well. He also didn't take it well when I sent him a text message on Election Night asking if he liked apples. I sympathize with them...I remember four years ago when I was sure that the country would throw Bush out on his keester and how disappointed I was when I realized we would get four more years of him. I eventually found solace in the fact that it would provide plenty of comedic material. I don't think that's really what we should want out of our government, but I was trying to be positive.

I think what I'm getting at is this: if I can put up with eight years of George W. Bush, surely you guys on the right can put up with at least four years of Barack Obama. If it doesn't work out, offer me somebody better than John McCain or Sarah Palin in 2012 and we'll talk. That's the thing with us lefties...we're pretty open-minded.

Where in NK do you live? I live in Cincy and go to NKU. It's cool knowing someone local is reporting on here.

yeah, you lefties are so open-minded that California, a state that went 61% to Obama, just passed Prop 8 banning gay marriage. Kinda hard to blame that one on red state rednecks, don't you think?

As a Liberal and yellow dog democrat that lives in one of the reddest of red states Tennessee I am encouraged to know now that I dont have to live in a box anymore.

I could't have worded this column any better. It was like a mirror image!

Liberals are very open-minded unlike our right wing conterparts. We think for ourselves and in a state which educations ranks toward the bottom of the nation its very difficult at times, but this lifts me up! Thanks

Trent: I live in Edgewood, and am actually going to NKU tomorrow to see my Louisville Cardinal basketball team.

Eric: Good point, not all liberals are as open-minded as I am.

i live in northern ky as well. in lexington. go wildcats. i cant say i agree with u being a moderate republican but i see were u r coming from. i like to look at both sides before i make a decision. this proves some wrong that find conservatives are not open minded. while i did support bush twice and john mccain i think obama will do a fine job as president.

Dude I have the exact opposite situation you are in, as most of my family are Democrats and I fully expact to hear about how great Obama is at Thanksgiving dinner.
However I am willing to give the President elect the benefit of the doubt, but will not change my political beliefs.

Why didnt you post my last statement. Liberals arent all open minded. Do you really think the Fairness doctrine is a good idea???? There is a talk radio station in Chicago called 820 for liberals and ill tell you what they spew nothing but hatred more than savage and rush combined. They always wish harm on conservatives is that OK. Chelsee lateley or whatever bashes us she looked at the camera and said " Iwouldnt mind giving half of my check toward Taxes' I thought you can give more if you want. Didnt Bono move from his homeland to avoid taxes? Not very liberal of him. Most of the NBC sitcomes bashes Us not just Bush, but conservatives.

I'm from Louisville and I am SUPER liberal. It doesn't matter what side you are on, there will always be extremes on either one. As far as California voting against gay people getting married, about 2/3 of people in this country are against it. If you have 1 person beating another person by that much in a national race, the person who loses would probably not win many states, if any. I know this sounds bad, but as older voters die out and more young voters get to the polls, it will become legal at some time or another, whether conservatives like it or not. It's only a matter of time.

both sides, both republican and democrat, can both equally be very close-minded. To say the thing with us lefties...we're pretty open-minded is not a very true statement. For all the republicans I know that have made idiotic comments about Obama 'being a terrorist' or calling him 'an evil radical socialist', I hear democrat friends of mine making comments about sarah palin looking like a 'porn star', and not being able to get past john mccain's age. There are obnoxious, arrogant people on both sides, regardless of age, gender, race, or political preference.

I hear ya on the talk radio thing. It's a shame, but I guess liberals just see radio as a dead medium, which is a real shame.

I'm a radio major so hopefully I can change things.

I would say if you support the Democratic party, or the Republican party you aren't paying attention.
Bush has done more damage to our personal freedoms than almost any President before him. All in the name of a Terrorist attack, that while a horrible thing, does not reconcile the freedoms he and his people impeded.
Abe Lincon said it best
"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter, and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves"
I'm more scared of the government than I am of Terrorists.

If you truly want a smaller government, and the checks and balances you've known about for so long...you should be making an effort to promote the parties that make these issues the top issues.

It seems to me the only thing the main two wanted to do this year was posture and argue about irrelevant things.

Posted By: Carnivore (Guest)  on November 07, 2008 at 11:09 PM

The irrelevant becomes the relevant in election years. That is how it is. I don't like it, but cheap tactics are rooted in politics around the world. More mud was slung from the Reps in the election than the Dems, but the Dems also had their fair share of mud to toss back.

Liberals from where I'm from, Northern Virginia, tend to be more open-minded than the Conservatives. One of the reason that my family nor I want to move to the southern areas is because of the intolerance and because of our skin color.

I'm not sayig Dems aren't arrogant as well, because I believe that this stuff is even on both sides. The problem is that we are all too damn prideful, and it can alienate people if we are not careful.

The Republican Party need to go into repair mode. There is a schism waiting to happen between Religious and Fiscal Republicans, and there is a slim chance that a complete party split could happen. I'd favor the fiscal repubs over the religious nuts any day (this is based on my experience with the local "evangelicals" and it definately isn't good).

What type of racist ass hillbilly fuck family do you have that it bothers them that you have a black roomate?

I can understand a white girl bringing home a black guy and half black kid upsetting white people.Cuz regardless of race or nationality people have issues with a woman dating outside her race...

But having black freinds, black lovers, living in a mostly black neighborhood etc..what the fuck?especially if you're male..
