Hurray for Hillary

Obama's selection of Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State should, finally, silence her and her husband's nattering critics.
As expected, President-elect Obama today nominated his former rival for the Democratic nomination, Senator Hillary Clinton, to be his Secretary of State. We can only hope that the endless, corrosive gossip about Clinton's – and her husband's – true motivations will now settle down.
What is deeply frustrating about modern politics is the cynicism that is so deeply ingrained in both seasoned political observers and many voters. So many lousy politicians are floating around Washington, bathed in the sleaze of their own ambition, that the concerns of those whom they are tasked to represent take a back seat. However, many political figures are honest, well-intended public servants with a deep desire to effect good. I believe Hillary Clinton falls into the latter category.
The chief of staff to a former senator and presidential candidate once broke down politicians to me as follows: he said that roughly one-third of the people in Washington are there because their hearts are in the right place and they have gone to serve the people; unfortunately, one-third are there because they simply crave the power, influence, and eventual money to be made. The other third, according to this former chief of staff, are a mixture of the two categories. There is no doubt the Clintons are ambitious people and there is no doubt they are both capable politicians. However, contrary to the fetishistic obsessions of Clinton-haters, who view the couple as little more than venal, self-absorbed thugs with Secret Service protection, the Clintons have contributed hugely to the betterment of humanity both at home and abroad. Obama, to his credit, has called upon them to apply their talents in his administration, because Obama is clear-eyed about the successes and skills of both Clintons, not just their liabilities.
The abject, across-the-board failure of the Bush administration has cemented for history just how impressive the Clinton presidency was. While the ethical lapses of the Lewinsky matter can never be excused, they seem hollow and insignificant in comparison to the Bush administration's trampling of the Constitution and outright dereliction of duty. When we ponder the horrific list of problems facing our nation, any one of which would be daunting on its own, it is difficult to avoid warm, nostalgic recollections of the 1990s, an era of such overall peace and prosperity that a nation's greatest concern was a politician's infidelity. Hillary Clinton was hardly a potted plant during her husband's administration; she had a portfolio of responsibilities – some self-created, some not – which both expanded our notion of what a First Lady's role should be, and confirmed what most married women already know – which is that wives tend to be a full partner with their husbands in all the key endeavors that a married couple undertakes. Yes, both Hillary Clinton and her husband made mistakes during his presidency, but these errors came mostly from a genuine effort to bring about change – big change -- just as Barack Obama intends to make. Many of the things Franklin Roosevelt tried in his effort to whip the Great Depression were failures. I would rather have a president – or a secretary of state – who failed at shooting for the big goals rather than someone who never made a mistake because he – or she – never even tried.
We live in alarming, serious times, which require egos large enough to believe these serious times can be overcome. This is why public servants with ambition do not bother me, as long as those ambitions always take a back seat to the call to serve in times of peril, even if that means setting aside presidential ambitions or giving up a Senate seat. Accepting Obama's offer to become Secretary of State probably means Hillary Clinton will never again run for president. It also means President Clinton's extraordinary global charity work, under the Clinton Foundation, will now be somewhat restricted (and was subject to a thorough vetting that went beyond the requirements of law). Yet the Clintons accepted both fates because whatever their personal ambitions are, their desire to serve our country – and indeed, the world – is greater. Prognosticators, pundits, and haters from both the left and right will always invent a new layer of conspiracy or machination to explain the Clintons' actions. What they never seem to be able to do is entertain the possibility that the Clintons have set aside or circumscribed their personal ambitions because the times require it, and that they are willing to give back to the country that has given them so much.
The co-partners and architects of a wonderful, albeit sometimes messy eight years of peace and prosperity have been asked to step up and give of themselves, not in an act of nostalgia for the 1990s, but in recognition that their deep commitment to public service is desperately needed in 2009. They have agreed to do so, to the irritation of their detractors. This selflessness, if nothing else, should silence those who cannot seem to accept that the Clintons have altruism in their DNA. I believe that Hillary Clinton will be a great asset to Obama as his chief diplomat, as will her husband in his own right.
Was this entire column sarcasm, or just an outright joke?

"8 years of peace"???
Have you lost your fucking mind? We were attacked 4 times during the Clinton era by bin Laden and we did nothing, leading to 9/11. Iran got away with killling our troops in the Khobar Tower bombing because the State Dept. made the FBI ignore the evidence; we did nothing. We put ourselves in the middle of a civil war in Bosnia (and we're still there). Not to mention we tucked tail and ran from Somalia, which was another confidence booster for bin Laden.
Clinton rightly deserves credit for kicking Hillary out of the Oval Office and listening to Morris and Rubin when it came to economic policy, but he did nothing to make this country safe.

This has got to be the most naive article I have every read. You must be living in democratic liberal la la land to believe half the stuff you wrote there.
Hillary is a politician. She does what she has to to survive.
I agree with Chris:
Clinton is always praised as a good president but its now obvious that his incompetence and failed policy led to 9/11 and now the current housing mess.
Republicans always come back to though to clean up the mess. Like what Bush did. We are on the verge of eliminating al qaeda and soon obama will want to withdraw. Obama then will come up with a bunch of proposals that may help NOW but will lead to more shit in like 10 years from now.

I'm sure that the Obama/Biden/Clinton 'dream team' will continue the proud tradition of crime, incompetence and delusional arrogance exemplified so spectacularly by the Bush/Cheney/Wolfowitz regime.

Chris hits it on the head pretty well in the comments. I didn't mind Clinton in the slightest, but that was a complete whitewashing of the "Clinton legacy" ... if it was such a good time had by all, why didn't Clinton carry democrats in the elections from 1994 onward? Remember the Republican Revolution and Newt et al? Obama may be doomed to repeat what Clinton did in 1992 ... swept out a Bush in the white house that ignored the economic times, only to squander the political chips gained on small cultural gains.
Hillary sold her soul out by sticking by her "husband" during the all the cheating and lying (how very feminist of her) for a shot at the senate and moreso, the presidency. This is not the end for her ... even Obama must see this. It's got to be a "keep enemies closer" thing where he thinks he can control her. In time, she'll be revealed as a democratic Kissinger ... a de facto shadow president ... and even if she isn't ... it's how she will WANT to be portrayed. Obama has MANY much more qualified people to choose from, but it's starting to look like the fix was in a few months ago. Back off and I'll make you a policy creator.
Some change the public voted for eh?

Sour grapes from the conservatives....
Are the conservatives upset that GWB suffered TWO recessions under his watch? Well, I guess Obama can be linked to Ronald Reagn. GWB is Obama's Jimmy Carter.... :-)

When's Connolly going to write another piece? Probably the only conservative on this site that occasionally makes sense.

Real life has gotten in the way of writing since the election. Fear not, I will be back later this week.

Hindsight is 20/20 my friends- Keep that in mind when you start spouting your rhetoric about Clinton ignoring some sort of intelligence that led to 9/11. Clinton didn't cause 9/11 to happen , o.k.? Nor did Bush, so stop using it as a talking point. It's incredibly offensive.
As far as "whitewashing history" goes- How many libraries are named after Ronald Reagan? Pot, this is kettle, he's black- Republicans love to incite confusion with their twisting of historical facts. It's the epitome of false intelligence-Clinton got a blowjob and lied about it. Reagan sold arms to Iran and forgot about it. You can't cherry pick facts if you want to be taken seriously.
Whatever happened to mutual respect when it came to political discussion?? All I ever hear from Republicans is hatred and fear- as if Democrats are out to destroy them. We are human beings, not enemies. Stop saying "liberal" with such contempt. It means "open minded". "Conservative" means "status quo".
BTW- Where did those pundits go that were calling the current economic collapse Obama's fault now that it has been confirmed that the recession began in 2007???

Its ok Vhris Bushs incompetency led to 9/11 as well. I know I know the warnings were too vague. It was a peaceful 8 years by means of no long pointless wars. The Bolivia intervention worked unlike Iraq and yeah I'm sure nothing Bush has done has motivated Bin Laden including his bumbling of the two wars he started and we're still in.
Please don't hurry back if thats what you have.

I'm not surprised the Tool Troupe are the first ones to comment on an article like this. You guys make republicans look bad. Hateful and instigating as always.

While "real american"makes some good points,I would remind him that "hate" in the political arena goes both ways.Just read alot of the posts on this sight and the smear merchants at MSNBC and you will see that nonsense goes both ways.
