The Wrong Side of the Right
Posted by Jake G. on 01.13.2009

It's got to be a tough time to be a Republican. The savior of the party, the man who once was heralded as dawning a beginning of a new Republican majority is about to leave office in virtual disgrace. That man, President Bush, is so despised by the majority of the country that when his replacement was announced as the President-Elect, people were literally dancing in the streets. For much of the last few months Bush has been completely ignored, sans a few scant comments here and there. Of course most Presidents become lame ducks in their last few months but Bush actually seemed to be come a lame duck even sooner. As the country's economic crisis began to explode, Bush stood there helplessly as he tried to offer advice and no one really listened. It's been almost comical to watch as Barack Obama has been leading the country for almost two months before he was actually sworn into office. President Bush has looked like anything but the strong leader of a Republican legacy. He's rode his family name down into flames and is easily one of the most hated and divisive Presidents in modern history.

Yet, I feel for my friends on the right who are hoping that their party can be rebuilt. I, like many others truly hoped we'd see the Republican brand rebuild to a true alternative to those on the left, with logical plans, good arguments and message for the future that wasn't so asinine as it had been since early 2001. Despite Bush leaving with his head down, John McCain slinking off into obscurity and Sarah Palin, well, doing whatever it is that she does, we find the Republican party still in shambles and the right's loudest voices are now not the most sensible, but the least.

I started this column off by saying it must be a bad time to be a Republican and I truly believe that. This past Sunday's new cycle produced so much vile ignorance from the rights that I just cringed and hoped that someday these voices wouldn't be the loudest.

First I present, President Bush basically sealing whatever chance he had at getting people to forget some of the atrocities under his administration, by granting an interview in which he admits to knowing specifically about torture and working to find out what types of torture he could use as well as how he could get them to slide by under the rules. It's nothing new or nothing most people didn't know already, but it seems damning coming from the own man's mouth.

Bush is however, as I said at the top of the article, a sinking ship. The Republicans aren't latching onto him. They've been abandoning the S.S. Bush for the last two years. However, this past election cycle, they did champion one man. A man of the people, he was to some a great philosopher, he was to others a beacon of hope and to most he was a phony plumber... I present story #2 that's getting lots of national attention, Joe the Plumber, while acting as a member of the media, thinks the media shouldn't be allowed to report on wars. Never mind that Joe is actually working as a MEMBER OF THE MEDIA, thus essentially saying he himself is the problem (I would agree on that point) but he even goes so far as to say that we should go back to World Wars era of propaganda films to get our updates on the "boys". That's right, Joe doesn't think we should have actual accurate information about where our soldiers are or the war they're fighting, but that we should get 2 minute news blurbs about how the "boys" are having a fun Christmas fighting the evil and Marilyn Monroe stopped by to cheer them up. That's all we need to know about war and our soldiers. Thatta boy, Joe, you stick it to the media!

Finally, we have a clear plan for the future from the right... They've identified their #1 enemy and he's one of the most powerful Democrats in recent memory. The dreaded and feared, Al Franken. That's right, say hello to the new arch nemesis of the Republican party. Apparently they're going to focus all their efforts on being particularly rude to freshman Senator Franken. Why should Franken be public enemy number one? Well for starters, he SHOULD have dropped out of the election once it was revealed entirely possible that he might win. Remember that the Coleman camp and every major Republican (plus some guys writing for this site) said that Franken should drop out. It was the honorable thing to do... Never mind that Franken won the recount, he should have let Coleman have the senatorial seat. Rest assured, that's not the only reason he's on the top of the right's hit list, though. Franken often had mean things to say about the right and he even wrote a comedy sketch about them as late as this past year. OH MY! Forget restructuring your party, forget coming up with a plan that might have a Grand Ole Party that welcomes not ostracizes, forget even coming up with a way to work with President Obama... Focus all your attentions on derailing Al Franken!

As I said, it's a bad time to be on the right. The stories coming out don't shine a bright light on the party. This is only a smattering of the ignorance, I didn't even mention some of the latest revelations of the new savior of the party, Sarah Palin. I just feel for my red brothers and sisters, who I know have great plans, valid points, intelligent arguments and are being buried under the burden of bad leadership and blind partisanship. President Bush, Joe the Plumber and whoever thinks Al Franken is the biggest threat to the Republican party, should not be the figureheads of the right... But sadly, they are. That's why it's got to be a hard time to be on the wrong side of the right.

You are just trying to incite those who think differently aren't you? Well, if you think that those who think diffently are stupid and ignorant, you are wrong. i have no respect for someone who is using inciting tactics to get a few views. Good Day to you sir.

To call you patronizing would be a insult to a-hole instigators.Al Franken lost. Then votes were "found".Some canvassing boards stuck with results from election night when it favored Franken. Then different boards counted"found"ballots.Different standards all resulting in favor of Smalley. The Wall street journal stated that never in the election history has every decision involving ballots all gone one way.
I have experience with this as a am a Washington state resident were the same thing happend in 2004 with our governors race. You know, more votes than voters, dead liberals voting, enhanced ballots, fruad.Progressive and nuanced stuff.
25 different districts in Minnesota have more votes than voters. You do not care becuase a hollywood ass hole won.Says alot about you.
Lastly, why do you care about the republican party?Your president elect is going to have 600,000 new goverment jobs coming. We all know bloating the goverment by 12,000 people per state is the answer to all of our economic woes.
Of course you leave out voter irregularities and continue to bash a lame duck president. That added to insulting a navy officer,a mother of 5 and a plumber.Good work,Keith Olbermann junior.

In response to the republican comments below, it's pretty obvious to me that both of you aren't trying to think or understand the world from his viewpoint either.

He made valid points about the republican party. What are they going to do about the mess we are in? What are conservative principles that can actually be applied to solve these problems? Can you articulate these in a well reasoned, understandable way that also is not a slogan that means nothing like lower taxes. What taxes should we lower? Why?

I am a young voter. I am also open minded and consider myself to be fairly moderate. However, the republican party is going to continue to lose my vote and my support until I hear real solutions. I do not really support the democratic party either. I feel like the dems have also sold out this country to the highest bidder, the republicans just do so more and with (I don't mean to sound mean) greater stupidity.

I want to say I am not a bleeding heart liberal, I just see the world objectively. The way the national republicans have handled themselves any month of any year since they tried to impeach Bill Clinton has been pretty shameful.

Give the man props for speaking his mind and please, please, please have someone other than Reagan to idolize. LOL

I sense blind ignorant Republicans in this comment section

Jake, IMO, what you are seeing right now is the illumination of an internal civil war within the Republican Party itself. Between those that believe the Party should become more inclusive and more right-of-center, and those that want to take the Party as far right as possible.

The Democrats went through the same process. And chose almost dead center. Hence, given that alternative, the majority of Americans jumped at it.

It will be interesting to see how the struggle within the Republican Party, plays itself out.

The "centrists" in the Party have been severely weakened. Many have defected to the Democrats. Or just left the Party altogether, to become independents.

So my guess is, they will become a "rightist" regional party for a time. Because that will be most of what's left, IN the Party.

They'll hunker down, attack when they can, and wait it out. Eventually, the Democrats will start being blamed for everything. Probably at some point after Obama leaves office (if not before) and they will come back. With new leaders, and a new message.

It will mostly depend on how Obama does. If he does well, and remains relatively popular, it will take the Republicans longer to come back. If he screws it up, sooner, rather than later.

That's how its always worked in the past. No reason to think it won't go down like that, moving forward.

Unlike you John, I actually watched the canvassing board go through the challenged ballots and most were clearly votes for Franken, votes that Coleman tried to suppress. You don't throw out a vote because the marked circle is a fraction of a milimeter off than normal, but thats what the Coleman people tried to do.

Franken won, it was fair, get over it, there is nothing you can do about it. You can't change facts.

Couldnt agree more Jake however I find it quite laughable. All the years of moral majority bull$hit backed by scandal after scandal. Finally the real everyman and woman (not Joe the P) woke up to the republican mantra and realized the right is concerned about them.
Oh and John who posted just before me. Nice touch at the end considering you appear to be Hannity junior. Actually an increase in government programs is exactly the answer to a national depression/recession ala New Deal. This country has a broken down infrastructure which requires massive rebuilding, hense the job increases. As a full fledged democrat can you tell me where to contribute to the Palin 2012 campaign. I would LOVE for this woman to run again.

Thanks for dropping my I.Q. by 50 points, John (George W. Bush, Jr.)

Yeah, Franken should have just had his brother be Governor, his state campaign co-chair as Sec. of State, and a Democratic leaning Supreme Court make him the winner. Now that's how you steal an election.

As a moderate Dem I do agree that the right needs new leadership that is more focused on the direction of the country than winning at all costs and being sore losers when they don't. I also think the left has leaders with the same problem but obviously the man currently at the top is all about bringing everyone to the table and working towards a better future. I would love to see the right come back with the own version of Obama with traditional Republican values so that I felt like I had a choice. It just seems like most everybody is so worried about their team winning that everything else goes out the window.

Keith Olbermann Jr.? That sounds awesome.

Hey Rook, Coleman and Rossi both won the origional counts,Gore did not.In fact name me one recount Gore won.The Miami Herald,USA Today and the New York Times all did studies showing Bush won. Those news outlets have never been accused of being right wing schills.
Oh and guest 4078,is it to much to ask that I keep 1 out of every 2 dollars I earn?I live in a radical left wing state were the tax burden is crushing normal families.(property taxes especially)I guess you do not hear to often about that in school.
So i am done, call me Shawn the pawn Hannity or George Bush all you want.Thoughtful and progressive argument.
Bush cheated,Franken and Gregiore were on the up and up.All left wing philosophy is great.Palin is evil,Trigg isn't her baby.Park the NBC satellite truck outside a plumbers house becuase he asked the messiah a tough question.McCain commited treason, his wife is a druggie,etc,etc.........
Now can I be a member of the cool club?

Good comments Jake. My own feeling is that the hard right crazies will never become more moderate for the sake of their party. It's simply not in their genes. Rather there will be a civil war within the party that will split it, perhaps permanently, into hard right and moderate factions. At some point the hard right may even run a separate candidate apart from the moderates in their party. From my perspective, it's all good as I'd rather see them tearing themselves apart rather than our nation.

With the retirement of Kit Bond, a great deal of discussion on local radio and television has centered on the future of the Republican party. Yesterday I listened to several interviews with prominent Republicans in Missouri all interested in running for the open Senate seat in 2010.

Oddly, none of the prospective Republicans mentioned any of the issues highlighted by Mr. G in the above commentary. No mention of Al Franken or Joe the Plumber, at all.

Actually Republican Congressman Todd Aiken devoted his entire interview to "working with" Democratic Majority in Congress and Democratic President-Elect Obama.

From my experience, the only people speaking about or concerned with President Bush, Joe the Plumber, Al Franken or Sarah Palin are on the left.

It would be nice to see Democratic supporters follow the lead of President-Elect Obama and let it go. Let go of your unrelenting hatred of your political opponents and move on for goodness sake.

I voted for Dean Barkley in the Senate race, so I don't really care who wins the recount. However, I do care when people distort the truth about the process. Yes, Coleman was ahead after the machine count. And yes, after the manual recount, Franken is ahead. I don't see how this is such a radical idea. Everything was as transparent as could be. All decisions and copies of all of the disputed ballots can be found on Star Tribune or the Secretary of States' web sites. There weren't more votes than voters in any precinct. There were more votes counted in the recount than there were votes counted on voting night, but that's expected since the machines rejected valid votes. There were no "found ballots". And as for the 133 missing ballots that were counted, the recount numbers were off by 134 votes, so rather than being duplicates, those ballots appear to have actually been lost. The bottom line is, rather than insinuating that the process is corrupt because your candidate lost, the data is available to make a convincing case. I think the reason nobody is is because nobody can. It's been a clean recount and Norm looks to be the loser.

How about this…it continues to be a sad state of affairs for both parties.

You obviously are bashing the republican party for the numerous missteps that it has taken, which is fair, but if/when roles are reversed the democrat party does the same thing.
You ask the rep. party to work closely with obama? Kinda like the dem. Party worked with President Bush, huh? That Nancy Pelosi sure reached across the aisle.

As far as Obama leading the country for the past 2 months….why not? He’s been playing president for the previous four. I for one am looking forward to him being inaugurated. It will be time for him to put up or shut up. He can’t rely on slogans and celebrity endorsements anymore. Deliver us oh chosen one…deliver us.
What are his followers going to say when he cant shut down Guantanamo Bay…when he cant withdrawal from Iraq…..when you will still have to pay your own mortgage and tuition. Not trying to be a prick, but he and his legion have placed the bar so high that disappointment is almost certain.

In closing, I didn’t say it first, but it bears being said again “I solemnly swear….” Will be the funniest thing Al Franken has said in 30 years.

I don't think the GOP gets it. They seem to think that they lost because spending got out of control. Sadly, they're wrong. They lost because like it or not a lot are a bunch of redneck homophobes who are also racist in a lot of cases. People don't like that. They lost because of our misadventure in Iraq. They lost because of the economy. They lost because they don't seem to have any fresh ideas on how to expand their tent beyond their base of right wing whackjobs and probably won't for years to come. They need to start treating people as equals if they're going to have any kind of future.

And Frankin beat Coleman. Deal with it people. It's only a matter of time before he takes the oath on the Senate floor. Coleman can't drag this out forever.

I am a conservative I am not a republican I went from being a liberal before 911 to a republican to the conservative I am now. I don't want help from the gov. I don't want help paying my mortgage, collage, or health. I just want the money I earn to feed my family, and give it to the charities that I support. I do know this everything started to go wrong after the gov. started trying to "help" both the reps and dems have done this don't give me money. I don't want your money I want my money and that won't happen with the huge gov. that is going to happen in the next 8 years.

I think Bush is overly critized. All of my friends who hate Bush really dont know why its just the media has built him up to be satan. I don't hate liberals i hate the media. Bush really didn't do what any president wouildn't have done in this kind of crisis. I'm not saying he was great or anything but better than the alternatives in 2000 and 2004

Yes clearly it's time for change such as spending another trillion dollars of non-existant tax payer money, raising taces on us "rich" people aka middle class America making 150,000 who can barely pay for their kids education and save for retirement as it is during this recession. We need more government agencies to handle things because we know how well FEMA handled Katrina, how the post office is so efficient that it keeps lowering stamp prices, how those cafe standards for cars worked out ect. ect. Everything the government touches becomes inefficient. Why don't people on the left get this? Government is NOT the answer. Jefferson, Adams, Washington, Franklin, these men would roll in their graves if they saw the things the federal government thinks it can do now adays. Once upon a time we lived in a country that believed in a divison of power between the states and the federal government that heavily favored the states. The federal government was meant only to help preserve the union but yet somehow it now tells us how much water is acceptable for each toilet flush, what type of cars we can buy, how much of our money we get to keep, pretty soon what type of energy efficient tvs we're allowed to use, what movies we can see, heck the fairness doctorine will tell us what type of radio we can listen to, new york lefties are already trying to tell us what we can and cannot eat, and the militant athiests are now trying to tell us we cannot even worship a God. Our liberties are eroding before us but what are lefties concerned about? Muslim terrorists in guantannamo who have been shown to return to their terrorist roots immediately after being released. PETA lefties are concerned more about blown up camels in the israeli-palestinian conflict than civilians. What the f*** is wrong with this country. Why do you lefties want the government to dictate everything to us? Just leave us the f alone. Why are we paying hundreds of thousands of dollars for useless museums in Montana, millions for solar panels in washington state, billions for car companies? Why does no one have the attitude that hey this is my f*** paycheck and you better have some g-d damn good reason to take a s*** load of it and spend it on congressional gold medals and other USELESS SPENDING. Where is the accountability? What are these awesome left programs? Democrats have controlled congress for decades more than republicans have and what awesome stuff have they given us? An end to poverty? An end to hunger? Free tuition? No. Just a s*** load of taxes and pork barrel spending. What The F***

No but when you make a stupid post you get a stupid response. Calling someone Olbermann junior and asking about a "cool club". It apparent you have already taken the stupid route to posting.
Instead of reciting Hannity retic, actually think about what you are posting.
Stating the MN senate was stolen with "found" votes is ridiculous. And no Palin isnt evil, just really stupid.

Ok,nick, point taken.I will be Hannity
Listen 3 hours a day,watch TV for a hour.
Go to my wesite, buy concert tickets.
Buy my book,etc,etc....
Does making fun of Pawn Hannity make me a member of the fun club? Please let me know.
By the way, will you please look up the 2004 Washington state governor election? If you have no problem with that...........then I give up.
