Thoughts on Stimulus
Posted by Bryant Daniels on 02.03.2009

Great stuff on Charlie Rose today regarding the stimulus package, with discussion featuring Chuck Schumer, Jack Welch, Martin Feldstein and David Leonhardt. Feldstein and Welch, a conservative economist and businessman respectively, both felt the stimulus needed improvement while Schumer and Leonhardt praised the action being taken as a good firm step toward recovery. Both sides presented logical arguments that are worth considering on a grander scale. In terms of infrastructure spending the plan offers a unique chance for us to do two important things: create real jobs in a relatively short amount of time and improve long-term economic capabilities by "updating" our crumbling skeletal structure. If we are to spend billions of dollars we need to maximize the bang for our buck. Inside the stimulus bill the senate will debate will probably be a mandate that all infrastructure projects the package pays for be ready to go within 120 days of fund allocation, a great way to ensure the money doesn't sit idly by while more and more people lose their jobs. Republicans have raised legitimate concerns about unnecessary money being spent on social projects, but ultimately thats small ball compared to the bigger picture. Even though Nancy Pelosi couldn't come up with a good answer for why the bill should include funding for contraception doesn't mean we should scrap the whole plan, and it certainly doesn't mean we should curb the funding for other social programs like food stamps and health care.

I give the Obama team credit for trying as hard as they have to do this in a bipartisan way, and if done properly a conservative approach (namely tax cuts) could help the credit market in both the long and short term. Feldman suggested tax breaks be given in a way that promotes consumer spending, rather than saving the money or using it to pay off the debt. For instance say the government offers in the stimulus tax breaks for purchasing cars, saying to the consumer if you buy a new car within the calendar year, the government will pay for 20 percent of it (For those of you ACHING to cry socialism, remember Feldman is a fiscal conservative). That's a tax credit that breathes life into a hurting market (the auto industry) while boosting consumer confidence. We have to remember, the key word here is "stimulus." Tax breaks for the sake of tax breaks probably won't lead to consumer spending, as we've seen with previous stimulus packages. Similarly a tax break could be offered for the housing market, but it probably would be minimally effective as housing prices continue to drop. Who wants to buy a house now, receive an uninspiring 7,500 dollar tax credit only to watch the house you just bought drop in worth another 20,000 dollars?

Of course these provisions regarding taxes and infrastructure spending don't really solve the main problem, that being the freeze on the credit market. What to do with all the toxic debt is a difficult decision, one I'm happy not to have to deal with. I think some of the money should be used to directly help the homeowners and keep foreclosure rates from continuing their rise. If we do establish a "Bad Bank" We must be careful not to overpay with the tax payer money, a difficult proposition considering the market has yet to hit rock bottom. The light at the end of the tunnel may be when we alleviate the banks of all the horrible debt they've accumulated, freeing the credit market to once again take some risks. it's not a job the tax payers should be doing, and certainly not one they should ever do again, but in the meantime lets make sure the economy doesn't crater any further. We can debate the merits of reform soon after.

What the fuck?

Okay, somebody explain to me why are these people even being considered?

Anyone care to explain what Obama is hiring Tax Cheats?

How about Obama gets people who pay taxes to fix the tax problems?

I fucking pay taxes, you pay taxes, so how about our leadeship pays taxes?

Speak up Liberals, I want to hear your thoughts.

"Speak up Liberals, I want to hear your thoughts."

KAY!

I agree, they should all be withdrawn, but how was Obama supposed to know that the people he's been choosing all have been cheating on taxes? He's just having some really bad luck with these hypocrites it seems.

"but how was Obama supposed to know that the people he's been choosing all have been cheating on taxes?"

How about he keeps his fucking promise of not appointing lobbyists!

By doing that he won't have "bad luck".

How about using that $500,000 Super Blackberry to do some research- fuck even Wikipedia will tell that Daschle was a crook...

I bet 2 thousand dollars that Obama's Obama'berry can access Wikipedia.

Bad luck! Get the fuck out of here. Well I guess thats the new reason for shit fucking up...bad luck.

The Buck Stops at Bad Luck!

I totally agree that the Stimulus package include help for home owners. Which is why I am taking the afternoon off to go find a house I can't afford. I hope my neighbors don't get pissed at me for having Uncle Sugar make-up the difference between what I can afford and what I actually purchased.

I'm seriously having a hard time understanding how this is his fault. Does he work for the Internal Revenue Service? I don't think Wikipedia would have info that these crooks were stealing taxes, but then again, Wikipedia also predicted the death of Chris Benoit so it could be true.

"Speak up Liberals, I want to hear your thoughts."

I'm not a Liberal. And I don't have any real thoughts on this one way or the other. But, I have some names.

David Vitter: Sex Scandal - still in office.

Larry Craig: Sex Scandal - just left office.

Ted Stevens: Convicted; almost re-elected. Just left office.

Tom Coburn: Under Ethics Review. Still in office.

Pete Domenici: Admonished for Ethics Violations - just left office.

I could go on and on and on and on.

The bottom line is, these people in the Senate are in no position to judge anyone, on anything. Few if any current sitting reps in Congress could withstand any real scrutiny into their backgrounds. Its ridiculous.

This is all just moonshine. Doesn't mean anything. Unless you want it to for political reasons.

Which is fine. Obama will just nominate someone else. And that will be that.

If you want to make this an issue. Make it one. So what?

It seems like the vetting team knew about Killefer's tax issues, but not the other two jackasses.

and dan man invalidated his argument by bringing up Mike Savage. I get tired of this "LIBBRAWWLLSSS" crap! It's never black and white, my friend. I voted Republican for alot of races here in North Carolina this past year.

Thank you Scott,

You just made the comment I was waiting for...

Obama ran on a platform of "Change".

He was going to revamp Washington and hold people accountable.

"Yes we can"...

I don't doubt that Washington is fucked up, I know it is, but Obama ran on a platform of hope for a better Washington.

He was going to change everything- hell even I thought it was possible.

The point is that Obama is pissing it all away.

He needs to stick to his promise of being Bi-Partisan, not appointing these fucking lobbyist, and at the very least admit to making mistakes- even if its just been a week.

He can bring this hope back around, but not if he allows his ego to run wild.

But if he does not, well, undelivered hope after promising hope will fuck you harder then a broken promise.

I'm not blind to the power the man has to sway a crowd, but sooner or later people will call bullshit.

He has to be more careful with these selections, but "standing by his man" will only make him look foolish and stubborn.

It's not too late- and the economy is waiting, so are alot of us.

He's tried to put in three tax cheats- one successful so far. I hope for all of us, that no more are appointed on his watch.

No spell check until I get my tax return...I paid my taxes- and some of these people have not.

You honestly do not understand how not reporting income to IRS is the problem of the person earning income? Sure you can always use your wife as a receptacle for lobbying and consulting fees as Daschle does but in this case, he earned income and did not report it.

Ignorance, as well as malfeasance, is no defense from the law.

"He needs to stick to his promise of being Bi-Partisan, not appointing these fucking lobbyist, and at the very least admit to making mistakes- even if its just been a week."

Does this not count, Spook?

"Tom made a mistake, which he has openly acknowledged," Obama said. "He has not excused it, nor do I. But that mistake and this decision cannot diminish the many contributions Tom has made to this country."

AdmChesterMynutz, I'm assuming your comment was directed towards me. What I meant by my comment was "How is this Obama's fault that Daschle is a cheat."

Posted By: Jamal (Guest)  on February 03, 2009 at 03:33 PM

Jamal,

How is this Obama's fault? Because the TWO critics are sore losers...maybe that has something to do with it. Or, they put Obama on a pedestal thinking he was some second coming or something, and they suffered a reality check. Eitherway, Spook and Chester need to lay of the fellow.

This is aim to the two critics, if you are sooooooooo smart, so intelligent, why aren't YOU running for public office? Why don't you "FIX" the problem???? Right, you rather complain about the problem and do nothing, just like the Republicans....

Jamal,

No, thats not working for me. Call me old fashion, but Obama did not apologize- and he tried to put sugar on a turd and pass it off as a cookie.

So not only did he not apologize, but he also defended the man who has not pay my salary while I served in a warzone in the service of my country.

But at least that tax cheat bowed out after being caught right? Instead of saying "no, don't pick me- I don't pay my taxes."

But that's okay, I can see Obama's point...It's just a mistake to not pay taxes as long as I serve my country, I'll remember that- since I serve this country.

Maybe people can make apologies and excuses for me when I get caught. Or maybe that will put me in line for a treasury job?

Please tell Jamal, does it make you feel better?

Posted By: The Spook (Guest)  on February 03, 2009 at 03:50 PM

It's not Obama's fault that this Tom guy is a fucktard.

But Obama should have done his homework, better yet- he should have castrated this man after finding out the facts- not stood by him, not defended him, and certainly not used his service record to excuse his actions.

That pisses me off more then anything- you don't excuse a person who serves, they should be held to a higher level...our tax money is paying their salary, our military service people's salary.

A Soldier who wins the Medal of Honor does not give him the right to blow up a Burger King.

Obama has tried to put not just Tom Douchbag in, but two other tax cheats...

So when does it become Obamas fault?

Posted By: The Spook (Guest)  on February 03, 2009 at 04:01 PM

Spook, I like you, dude. You're really intelligent and I enjoy when people challenge my thinking. Also, we both agree that Tom is a douchebag and a hypocrite. But you just can't sell me on the fact that This is Obama's fault. How about this? When Obama's first REAL fuckup happens, I will show right up on this blog as the first poster (which will more than likely be written by Enrique) and call him out on it.

Posted By: Jamal (Guest)  on February 03, 2009 at 04:11 PM

I think the elephant in the room here is that ALMOST EVERYONE IN GOVERNMENT THAT GETS INVESTIGATED FOR SOMETHING COMES BACK DIRTY! It's probably not possible to offer up a candidate that hasn't had their hand in some sort of cookie jar. Our government makes it waaaaaaaay too easy to makes lots of money and take perks for being in high level positions. Obama made an error in not cutting people out of the running as soon as something was found, but I'm pretty sure he couldn't actually find someone in government who was clean.

As for how it could be Obama's fault, Jamal, he would have had to sit down and vett Geithner and either Geithner lied to him, or Obama knew about his tax lapses and went ahead anyway. It's a case of saying that a person has more positives than negatives, but it comes across badly and is easy ammunition for partisans. Obama needs to avoid this at all cost, especially since he's from Illinois.

Ditto Jamal,

And I will do the same...

If Palin does this when she wins in 2012.

Respect.

Jamal,

Obama's first fuck up happened when he DIDN'T pull the Geithner nomination. We now have a tax cheater overseeing the IRS. It's astonishing.

That has immediately put a stain on his "change Washington" platform.

There is NO way to rationalize the situation.

Posted By: Eric (Guest)  on February 03, 2009 at 05:02 PM

How is this Obama's fault? Tom Daschel not paying income taxes on his income is not Obama's fault. Nominating a candidate for a Cabinet post in which your vetting process has already uncovered malfeasance; publicly excusing the malfeasance as a mistake; saying that you will stick with your nominee even when the nominee admits malfeasance. That would in fact be "Obama's fault".

According to documents being prepared by the Senate Finance Committee, Tom Daschle, President Barack Obama's choice for secretary of Health and Human Services, paid about $140,000 in back taxes and interest AFTER questions surfaced during the vetting of his nomination.

Jamal, if not Obama's whose would be at fault for nominating Tom Daschel in light of his self-admitted malfeasance?

Posted By: AdmChesterMynutz (Guest)  on February 03, 2009 at 06:32 PM

“'I screwed up,' President Barack Obama told NBC’s Brian Williams Tuesday in the wake of his nominee to be secretary of health and human services, Tom Daschle, withdrawing his name from consideration. Obama added, 'I’ve got to own up to my mistake. Ultimately, it’s important for this administration to send a message that there aren’t two sets of rules, one for prominent people and one for ordinary folks who have to pay their taxes.'”

There.

Posted By: Rook (Guest)  on February 03, 2009 at 06:48 PM

Obama saying "I screwed up, I made a mistake and now we have to make sure the same mistake doesn't happen again" (paraphrasing from his CNN interview) sounds a lot like taking responsibility to me.

Arguably, he's putting more of it on himself than he ought to. Not that it'll do him much good; so many have already made up their minds about him and his intentions, it seems.

Funny, you'd think this was politics or something.

Posted By: Scotty H (Guest)  on February 03, 2009 at 07:49 PM

Rook and Scotty, that's all well and good with Daschle. But he screwed the pooch with Geithner, and he didn't have the balls to pull that nomination. And that decision does show there are still two sets of rules. No way you can defend it.

Posted By: Eric (Guest)  on February 03, 2009 at 11:17 PM

"If 'pro' is the opposite of 'con', what is the opposite of 'progress'?"

"Congress - the best legislature money can buy."

This is the reason for the approval process in the Senate...to scrutinize the candidates for these positions and find faults. I'm not going to blame Obama for choosing these guys; he was picking whomever he thought was best for the position. Now the actions of these individual candidates upsets me. If it was you or I who didn't pay our taxes; the IRS would probably have our asses locked up.

Frankly, the culture of politics and Washington is corrupt. Both Democrats and Republicans. I think anybody is naive if they believe Obama can swoop in with a magic wand and clean up the mess and corruption in Washington.

Posted By: Elliot (Guest)  on February 04, 2009 at 12:06 AM

Obama's only saying that he screwed up by not having an HHS Secretary at the time when we need one, NOT that it's his fault that daschle is a cockbite!

Posted By: Jamal (Guest)  on February 04, 2009 at 08:43 AM

Elliot may well be one of the few people I agree with on here.

Everyone. Read this again...EV-ER-Y-ONE is corrupt.

EVERYONE.

Obama could have picked Jesus H. Christ for HHS, but if he was part of Washington, he would have some dirt on him.

The problem isn’t with one person as a part of the government, it is the system of government itself.

I truly believe that they all need to be taken down. The way things have been done in D.C. is DEAD. It’s old. It’s washed up. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Throw them all out. You’ve been in Washington for any more than the two terms that a President would sit for, you are GONE.

You are over the age of 65, which is the standard age of retirement, you are GONE.

Your actions result in a conflict of interest, a violation of ethics, judgement or you just plain break the law, you are GONE. Sure, have a trial, you deserve that much – but if you’re found guilty, goodbye and good luck. Back to the private sector for you.

We’ve become so used and brainwashed to believe that government is a revolving door of the same names and policies that we just accept it as that. No. As this country is a work in progress, so should those who lead and make decisions for it. THEY must change, and forever be changing.

But WE have to accept this mindset. We should be able to declare that we have the power to govern ourselves. The only way to accomplish this, though, is to research, elect, volunteer or RUN for office ourselves, under the banner that WE can lead incorruptible lives in that position.

Can you do it? Prove it. Let’s see how this country looks in 20 years. I haven’t seen any indication that we’re going to change by then.

Posted By: Anarchist (Guest)  on February 04, 2009 at 12:02 PM

Ok, David, you have just PROVED the point I've been trying to make for YEARS! The PEOPLE of this country need to step up and take control away from the career politicians! Why not vote for an independent instead of Dem or Rep?!

To Spook and Jamal: Maybe we should form our own Party of the People!
