411 Politics Fact or Fiction: Week 121
Posted by Brandon Crow on 03.12.2009

Welcome to Week 121 everybody! This week, we have readers Matt Hanna and Patrick Taylor, both of whom consistently post comments in our zone, so you know they are up on their politics and current events. Let's see what Matt and Patrick have to say.

Ding! Ding!

1. Former Massachusetts Governor, Mitt Romney won this year's CPAC straw poll. It was his third straight win. Third time's the charm and Romney's going to the big dance in 2012.

Matt Hanna: FICTION. Its too early to tell whether Mitt is going to the dance or not but I wouldn't hold my breath. This is the third straight year that he has won the straw poll which means that he was the winner heading into last year's primaries which did not go well for him. Romney is a favorite of the pro-business side of the party due to his successful business career and policy views. However, he likely won't fare well in the heavily red bible belt due to his Mormon religion, which while completely idiotic is true. He also has a tendency to come off as a disingenous, plastic politician which will turn off moderate/independent types who vote in the primaries. The guy is basically straight out of central casting as far as a politician goes and seems to have a problem connecting with voters.

Fact is, the guy couldn't even beat McCain in the primaries who was a pretty weak candidate himself in spite of the Scrooge McDuckian level of money he spent. Granted, the Republican field is not exactly over flowing w/ top prospects for 2012, but I would be surprised if Romney pulled it off.

Patrick Taylor: FICTION. The CPAC performance may have been stellar, but who really cares? I wouldn't have even known the CPAC event existed without President Obama's post-partisan functionaries spending the past week relentlessly whining about it. I can't quibble with Matt's take.

I certainly may be idiotic, yet I would never vote for a Mormon. I personally can not support a candidate who belongs to an organization with a history of conspiracy and armed insurrection against the United States of America. I also have a person disdain for aristocracy.

Finally, and most importantly, I work on the Institutional Side of the securities business and those bastards at Baine Capital have never paid me a flipping dime during the past ten years.

1 for 1. Apparently, Mormonism is still a handicap for Romney. Maybe it's time Romney took the G.W. route and became born again…

NEXT WEEK: BOO!!!!!!!!!

2. Major American newspapers should be placed on the priority list for a bailout.

Matt Hanna: FICTION. I am not a fan of the bailouts but putting my own personal grudges aside I see no reason for major newspapers to receive one. In theory, bailouts should be going to companies going through a rough patch but still have a sustainable business model and future. Newspapers are dead. They've been effectively replaced by the web similar to how CD stores have been replaced by mp3 downloads. I cannot name one person that I know under 50 that has a newspaper subscription.

There may still be a niche market in the future for newspapers (old timers, people who just like to have something to pick up & read in the morning, crossword nerds, etc) but the days of newspapers being big business are over and throwing money at it is not going to change anything. They are better off cutting costs and learning how to turn a profit via their own websites.

Patrick Taylor: FICTION. Extra, Extra read all about what you already know. Under no circumstance should newspapers receive any funding from any governmental unit.

By definition a bailout means that a bail has been posted to get a person out of jail while waiting for trial. The bail is returned upon appearance at trial; otherwise bail is not returned. Given Matt's points above, I believe the newspaper business "poses a significant flight risk" in that they are being replaced by a better mouse trap and will never "report for trial".

The ticker-tape machine so loved by Gomez Adams is a quaint method to get stock price information but of little use for those who "follow the tape" today. Newspapers are no different.

Although efficiency argues against government subsidy of traditional newspapers, there is probably a more compelling reason not being discussed. Doesn't everyone see the inherent conflict-of- interest in having newspapers funded by the Federal Government. I mean it is one thing to be informally complicit in regurgitating the daily jive emanating from Robert Gibbs, its quite another to have your livelihood directly dependent upon it.

2 for 2. I'm not a big fan of bailouts, but to have major US cities without newspapers, well, isn't that the most valuable commodity out there—accurate, unbiased information?

NEXT WEEK: AAAAAAAAAGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Switch!

3. In a recent interview, one of Arnold Schwarzenegger's staffers said that this past year, "the Ah-nold" nearly switched parties. He should have; he would have been much happier as a Democrat.

Patrick Taylor: FICTION. I can't speak to the man's happiness but I doubt any political benefit would accrue to anyone in California as a result. I mean the guy seems to be equally hated by both Republican and Democrat alike. He hoped to be a post-partisan political actor. As he has come to find out, post-partisanship provides use-value in campaigning but is of little value in governing.

Governor Schwarzenegger finds himself in very similar situation with former President George Herbert Walker Busch. Both gained their Republican "street cred" through campaign pledges of no new taxes while both inheriting budgets with enormous structural deficits that would require additional revenue sans significant program cuts; in other words, Girly-man Economics. Both mistakenly thought breaking their "no new tax" pledge would be met with similar political sacrifice from opposing legislative interests. For all intents and purposes, Schwarzenegger breaking his pledge has had the same political result as changing parties and nobody is happy.

Something has to give in California, the economy does not generate enough tax revenue to pay for the level of government service the State currently provides. Just as Bush, the mounting bills have become so large that there is no easy answer. Arnold came to power when Grey Davis began issuing warrants to vendors as settlement for government purchases. After five years of Schwarzenegger administration, tax refund checks are not being distributed and the IOUs will soon be hitting the streets. Arnold will be joining G.Herbert Bush and Grey Davis soon. His party really didn't matter.

Matt Hanna: FACT. Arnold has basically been slowly turning into a Democrat anyways. I live in California and most Republicans can't stand the guy. He was elected on a pledge on reduce taxes and the hated California license tax which is amazingly high. He has now gone back on both of those pledges. He has always leaned more Democrat on social issues as well such as abortion, conservation, & gay marriage to a degree. With his recent decisions, its hard to see why this guy considers himself a Republican. Granted, most Democrats seem to think he is a joke too but he seems to have more in common with them nowadays. It seems Skeletor Shriver may have converted him.

On a side note, California is a complete disaster as Patrick alluded too. Years of bloated state contracts, unchecked illegal immigration, and black hole public works projects have put the state in serious jeopardy. As most politicians are too spineless to go after the root of the problem, they just insist on increasing revenues via more taxes. The sales tax in LA is approaching 10% on top of the high state income tax and other fees. Combine that w/ the high cost of living and its easy to see why middle class and businesses are leaving the state in droves. Soon the state will be left with the rich who will take the high tax tradeoff for the great weather/scene and poor who benefit from the high level of services. The middle class is getting squeezed right out.

2 for 3.

NEXT WEEK: SSSHHRRIIIEEEEEKKKKK!!!!!!!!!

4. The Justice Department, under President Obama, recently stated that detainees in Afghanistan have no constitutional rights. This position—essentially reaffirming and reinforcing Bush—is just plain wrong, pure and simple.

Patrick Taylor: FICTION. The issue of Constitutional authority has never been plain, pure or simple throughout the entire history of the United States. Therefore I must say that President Obama's continuation of the Bush Policy is not plain wrong, nor pure and not simple. On the face of it, the Bagram Airfield is not a US Territory and therefore not subject to Constitutional authority. But the Constitution is purposely vague on the question of who is subject of Constitutional authority. The Constitution does not define citizenship nor whether Constitution applies to those outside US territory serving the US government. What I do think is plain wrong, pure and simple, is Barack "constitutional scholar" Obama, arguing Bush's policy was un-Constitutional as candidate, but is Constitutional when President. Or, "Well, when the president does it that means that it is not illegal."

Matt Hanna: FICTION. I don't think that these detainees are subject to constitutional rights. I think a more accurate description would be to label them as POWs which would give them rights under the various POW treaties but not necessarily the same constitutional rights given to someone in the US Criminal Court system. We are fighting a war, thus the prisoners should be treated as such. I think President Obama is slowly realizing that things are not as black & white as some in the media like to paint it in the War on Terror. It will be interesting to see how many more of GW's "facist" policies are continued under the Obama administration when it comes to handling the war and national security.

3 for 4. Yes, it will be interesting to see how Obama swings/sways on these difficult issues now that he's president.

NEXT WEEK: BBBWWWUUUHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!

That's it for Week 121. WEEK 122 will simply be downright scary! See you all in seven.

The detainees aren't on American soil and they aren't American citizens. Never in the history of warfare have captured enemies been allowed to challenge their detention in civilian courts. To allow them to do so would give the Judicial branch power they do not Constitutionally have. Wars are dealt with by the political branches, not the judiciary.

Mitt Romney seems more like a spoof of a Republican political sterotype than an actual person. His demeanor, his tone and mannerisms, wanting to double Guantanimo, pathetic attempts to connect with those he doesn't understand ("Who let the dogs out?"). He will go nowhere.

Non-citizens are not covered by the Constitution. I would argue anyone detained by the U.S. should be protected by the Geneva Conventions, to which the U.S. is a signatory. Some would say those from non-signatory nations shouldn't be protected, but treating prisoners vastly differently based on their country of origin is inherently absurd. They should be tried in a reasonable time period in military courts with sensible rules, so we don't have known terrorists turned loose on a technicality. Throwing someone in a cell for years on a hunch or shaky accusation is not acceptable.

newspapers are dead. i only get the sunday's paper for coupons and that is it. when my favorite player gets traded. why wait until tomorrow to read about it?

romney is the gop's only hope. which is sad.

". . . isn't that the most valuable commodity out there—accurate, unbiased information?"

Yes, but what has that to do with newspapers?

OK, that's snarky, but seriously, why do we think something becomes more accurate if it's on flabby paper in smudgy ink? There's enough coverage from Time, Newsweek, CNN, Fox News, and the internet that we've got info covered.

I always think it's funny when the left criticizes the right's lineup of presidential hopefuls.

I mean, look in the friggin mirror for a second. Barack Obama?

Obama has done ZERO, NOTHING, NADA, ZIPPO in his lifetime. He has a clean resume because he HAS NO RESUME!

Putting Mitt Romney's resume next to Obama's resume is like putting a human being next to a chimpanzee.

The criticism of Romney are always superficial or bigoted:

A. He's plastic
-Why is this a big deal? He graduated from BYU as Valedictorian when he was plastic, he learned French when he was plastic, he graduated Suma Cum Laude when he was plastic, he ran jumpstarted Staples and Dominoes as president of a hugely successful company when he was plastic, he ran the olympics when he was plastic, he was governer of a large GDP state when he was plastic.

If he gets the job done right, why should we give a Sh@#$ what his character is like?

B. He's a Mormon

Well that's like saying we shouldn't vote for Obama because he's black and has big ears.

i am a liberal. but i rather have a the choice of a smart, educated, articulate, experienced mitt romney instead of the GED having, folksy, intelligence bashing, race baiting sarah palin.

"Never in the history of warfare have captured enemies been allowed to challenge their detention in civilian courts"...

Yeah Chris, because if something hasn't been done in the past it can never change in the future... Like the moon. No one ever walked on the moon before so they never will in the future...

So, I'm a foreigner picked up in my own country for shooting at trespasses. I get shipped off to a foreign prison that the US claims has no governing rules on the treatment of prisoners and I sit there without anyway to challenge being imprisoned.

You wonder why terrorists are able to recruit people to strap bombs and blow themselves up in the name of Islam? Because they are convinced there is no justice here on earth.

The US talks a lot about justice and liberty, but its actions end up just talking shit.

Posted By: Ray Church (Guest)  on March 12, 2009 at 08:22 PM

Yeah, great analogy Ray Church...

Because walking on the moon and fighting terrorists are so much alike to conjure up the example you're talking about...dumb fuck.

Here's the fucking deal, dipshit:

Terrorists are bad.

We are good.

Terrorists don't wear uniforms.

We do.

Terrorists hide among the innocent public.

You know what motivates the public to point out the terrorists- going to jail forever.

You, Ray, are a fucking idiot if you don’t think the majority of these Muslim fuckers we got locked up are terrorists. I mean damn near all of them.

Is the system perfect- no, but is our own prison system perfect? No.

Shit happens in war, dick head- if you think you can do better, then quit being a pussy and join up. I promise you it's not as bad as you think.

The worst part of all this, is that you asshole liberals take your own freedom for gratitude...and your love for the enemy condition has caused more deaths in Iraq then anything the military would ever willingly do.

Here's the logic: Liberals complain about the violence in war, the legality of war, the cost of war, to the point that the military can't do anything without asking if it's okay...that causes deaths on both sides- because it causes hesitation, and second guessing.

We could have had Iraq cleaned up in a few years- if we were allowed to just do the job of killing terrorists...But liberals are always whining about how we do it- when most of you assholes have never served as your neighborhood, much less your country.

But you fucking nut jobs make a big deal out of every dead terrorist shown on TV- while questioning the level of appropriate violence needed to conduct combat.

Remember the Soldier in Fallujah that killed the wounded insurgent- how many times did CNN, MSNBC, and NBC show that footage and condemn that man? Who the fuck is Keith Olbermann to question the actions of a soldier in the middle of fight in Falluajh?

This is the same town that held a public BBQ of some civilians trying to build a bridge.

If you're going to question the method in which we treat our enemies, Ray, you bastard, fine- but at least have the courtesy to acknowledge your real anger.

In your world, America is so bad- and full of so many people not quite as enlighten as you...

You're a bitch who thinks it's cool to bash your own country, protest a war you don’t understand, and are afraid to acknowledge that people your age have the balls to live for something greater than themselves…

Fuck you, and the terrorists that you defend, because you’re just angry that you don’t matter in the big picture- That you have never had an action that changed anything. You’re a non-factor, a bit player and irrelevant.

Go get a life asshole.

Posted By: The Spook (Guest)  on March 12, 2009 at 11:10 PM

Ray,
So are you saying that we should read terrorists Miranda rights and get warrants before we send the military into their hideouts?

Posted By: Chris Connolly (Guest)  on March 12, 2009 at 11:22 PM

Ray is the example of short-sighted self-righteous thinking. No doubt he is sincere in his beliefs but he is simply perpetuating the liberal construct that it is more important pandering to criminals than it is helping their victims.

Posted By: Mikel (Guest)  on March 12, 2009 at 11:55 PM

Rays comments sound exactly like the crap you would hear at a ACLU meeting.Quit blaming your country.Dick.Have you ever thought that maybe its not americas fault asshole terrorists are as fucked up as they are?Now go masterbate to Keith Olbermann.

I am not sure what the issue is with some republican voters when it comes to Romney. It HAS to be the religion issue since I think he WOULD'VE beaten Obama head to head.

Any Republican that can run a wackjob liberal state like Mass (I know because I live there) and still get things done shows he had across the aisle appeal. The House and Senate of Massachusetts is 80 percent Democrat yet he was able to push things through, and even worked with Democrats to get "Universal Health Care" through in a way that might work (Of course since he left, the Democrats and Obama's friend Deval Patrick have since made it a huge boondoggle, but that is another story.)

The Republican Party went to the right, the far right, and only appealed to those that were going to vote for them anyway. Obama won by running to the center (which he has run away from since the oath was administered) and snagged all the fence sitters in the middle. I think the election would've been MUCH closer if a "vibrant, fiscally responsible, successful business man in the private sector with governmental executive experience dealing with an opposition party in power" was running.

Then again, perhaps the 08 election was just a market correction, and even Reagan couldn't have followed Bush Jr. 2012 might be a better time for Romney.

Ray, maybe you need to listen to what The Spook has to say. A bit crude, but on the money. If you don't want to listen, how about just shutting the hell up!

Posted By: d's nuts (Guest)  on March 13, 2009 at 11:23 AM

Let them blow themselves up! If they want to die, let them, just don't take any innocent people with them! Your just like every other damned lib..."oh, they have rights guaranteed to them under the US Constitution." Are you kidding me, they are enemy combatants and have no rights! Would our personnel have any rights if they were captured? Hell no! Why should the libs (who've never served a second in any branch of the military) say what's right to do in that situation? If they had ANY military background, they'd know that enemy combatants (uniformed or not) have no rights under the US Constitution.

If you've got the ACLU on speed dial... you might be a liberal.

Ahhh, Spook. Always willing to listen to an opposing view and give a calm, intelligent counter view. When you get right down to it, Spook is America.

ds nuts:

Um, Joe Biden's kid is serving right now. VA Senator Jim Webb also served. That's already two libs right off the top of my head.

Now, if you want to talk about people who haven't served in the military shouldn't have a say in military matters, then I'll just sit here and await your response on...

George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Karl Rove and Paul Wolfowitz, the four douche bags waving the biggest metaphoric dicks around for the last six years about the war in Iraq.

Go ahead. Respond. We'll all be waiting.

Do you feel lucky, punk? Or maybe you'll just come back on here and apolgoize, and suck on...

"dees nuts."

Crow21,
If you are not limiting it to active duty, then W did serve, as I am sure you remember Rathergate. Cheney got deferrals for either being in school or having kids, I don't remember which.

Wow I see Church and Crow, and Krunchy it is like old home week, except you guys are still here and I was the one who left. I think Crow should have asked about the Cramer vs Stewart thing, but he is probably saving that one for week 6,297 of F or F. You know what this blog needs? A weekly column that could run on Fridays that has lots of pictures with funny comments on the bottom. Crow seems to have some experience in that. Remember kids, Crow is always looking for participants to challenge his weekly intellectual gauntlet, so email him as sign up.

Crow, unlike you, I have a life and don't spend my free time responding to dunderheads like you. In response to your comments, I didn't say that liberals didn't or don't serve, I was commenting that there are a hell of a lot of folks in the current administration who never served one minute in any military capacity. Far with no military experience than in the last one.
And oh, by the way, GW did serve, in the National Guard (like Beau Biden), he was never deployed. Cheney and Rove received college deferments (kind of the norm for the 60's). Well, Wolfowitz really had no excuse...
How about your "big four":
Obama-no military service
Biden-FIVE deferments
Emanuel-no military service
Harry Reid-no military service

Would you like me to go on...
Geithner-no military service
Clinton-no military service (could have joined the WACs or the WAVES)
Pelosi-no military service (see above)

And on and on and on...

Posted By: d's nuts (Guest)  on March 16, 2009 at 11:57 AM

Crow, I also think you didn't get the drift of my blog. The bulk of my comment was on the "rights" of enemy combatants. Simply put, they shouldn't have any and it's the liberals (the majority of who have never spent any time in any branch of the military, see above) who think the enemy combatants have rights under the US Constitution. Guess what Skippy, they have no rights under our Constitution (not US citizens), they have rights under the Geneva Conventions (which we are more than complying with). Read before you write.

Posted By: d's nuts (Guest)  on March 16, 2009 at 12:53 PM

d's nuts:

"I have a life and don't spend my free time responding to dunderheads like you."

Yes, clearly, you have such a grand life and don't need to respond to dunderheads...that's why you've posted here four times in the last three days.

And if you've got better things to do than respond, why respond? Your actions speak far more than your contradictory delusions.

And I love how you start going down the list of Democrats who didn't serve. Why not run a similar list of W's crew? Ashcroft? Rice? Go ahead.

And let's not hide behind deferments because we all know what that was about. If you're not there, you're not there. I don't care if you're a Dem or Rep, you're not in the military. And according to your overgeneralization, they have no right to say anything about war or military policies.

Lastly, Biden, Obama, Reid and the Democrats aren't the ones out front beating their chests about the greatness of war but meanwhile, behind the curtains, get deferment after deferment.

I should read before I write? You should think before you speak.
