Who is the Most Feared Welterweight in the World?

"Brutiful" is how one fan called the fight between Antonio Margarito and Miguel Cotto: a combination of brutal and beautiful, which is the essence of sweet science. If you did not see that fight, it is an instant modern classic and I am sure you will be able to catch it on HBO and soon on ESPN classics, but if you did, what can I say, it inspired so many emotions in so many people: fans making up words to describe it that could very well become a part of English language.

Antonio "The Tijuana Tornado" Margarito crushed his opponent in devastating fashion, changed the whole landscape of welterweight division and demonstrated to every one why he was called the most feared welterweight. Margarito does not simply win matches; he destroys his adversaries by taking their heart and soul and breaking their spirit and to do it to Miguel Cotto, who I still consider one of the top fighters of today, was not a small feat.

Even though Margarito said in his post fight press conference, that he would let Bob Arum pick opponents and do the promoting for him, he was in Las Vegas a week later for the Clottey- Judah fight, calling out Oscar De La Hoya. "He said he wanted to fight the winner of Cotto- Margarito," said Tony smiling during his televised interview:" I am right here."

However, Bob Arum told me prior to the fight on Saturday morning that Oscar would not consider Margarito for his final bout because he did not want to fight a Mexican for his last outing. After the battle Bob Arum stated that things have changed and that Antonio deserves big money fights and that his job as a promoter is to make that happen. But we are back to square one: Floyd Mayweather Jr. turned down eight million dollars to fight Margarito a few years ago and he is definitely not coming out of retirement to do it now, Oscar is out. So where is that big money fight for Tony? Is Margarito still the most feared man in boxing? What's changed?

There is one man who had something to say about that and he flew all the way from South Carolina to Los Angeles to let every one know how he feels. His name is Paul Williams and his promoter Dan Goossen hosted a press luncheon in Sherman Oaks, California at a trendy Italian restaurant "Sisley's". Dan Goossen revealed to the media that he offered Bob Arum four million dollars guaranteed take, which is more than twice more of what Margarito was guaranteed to fight Cotto, for Tony to fight Paul Williams.

Bob Arum turned it down. Steve Kim from Maxboxing.com joked that he invited Sergio Diaz (Margarito's manager) for free lunch at Sisley's, Sergio refused by saying he is on a diet. Let's think about it for a while. Their first fight last July in Carson , California was a great twelve round battle in which Williams earned unanimous nod from the judges and a WBO welterweight belt .Some experts felt that it was a close fight and if Tony would have started the tornado rolling a little sooner it might have ended differently.

David Avila of Riverside Press asked Paul if he would change his strategy in the rematch, especially if Tony would start faster.

"I know how to beat him," said confident Williams:" Why would I change anything, if he starts fast he will finish slow."

Others, myself included, felt that Williams won that fight decisively and therefore if any one should look for a rematch it should be Margarito.

When I asked Paul about that, his trainer George Peterson said, "I want to answer that. They say it was a close fight, I don't understand that. How could it be a close fight when he won by unanimous decision, I just don't see that. Yesterday I was reading USA Today and it said that he (Margarito) is the most feared welterweight in the world. How can he be the most feared welterweight in the world when this young man here is still asking for him.

"I can't understand that."

"I would love to fight him again," said Williams:" but if Margarito doesn't want to fight, I am not going to sit around and wait for him. We want all the big names anywhere from 154 pounds all the way to 168."

Dan Goossen revealed that the obstacle to make a fight with Pavlik was money and the problem with Winky Right fight was that HBO pulled the September date. So now HBO gave Paul Williams a new date in November, but no opponent as of yet.

So who is the most feared welterweight in the world? It looks like neither one of these two might have too many options and they will be forced to fight each other again and we will get our answer.

Paul william pleas ok he beat Margarito but that was because Margarito started slow real slow if Margarito would of started like he did we cotto he would have knock williams out before the 5th .williama knock Quitana in the first but befored that Quitana gave him a beating he took him to School but nobody talks about that and cotto destroyed Quintana so my opinion is Margarito n cotto are the best and the most fear out there and even when Margarito beat cotto i still think cotto is better than margarito so i think wright now thoes two are in another level.

Hey jsr3219, didnt u say cotto was gonna win. U really thought cotto was gonna pull through I read all ur comments man. It felt so good when my boy Margarito beat that ass on 7-26. No disses towards cotto cuxz he was a man to fight margarito in the first place. Bottom line i agree with u margs and cotto are the best right now. paul williams needs to shut the hell up and fight a couple of other fights before he get margs. margs vs williams 2 Margarito ko seventh round.

Why does everyone keep talking about Cotto/Margs as if Margs just totally destroyed Cotto? Cotto f'n dominated the first 6 rounds, and if he had not been outclassing Margs so much, he would not have begun lingering on the inside too much. Cotto was fighting so great that he started to stand and trade with Margs, because HELL, wouldn't YOU get tempted if you were landing 45% of your shots and the other guy could barely land 20% of his shots? I just think Cotto made some tactical mistakes and he will learn his lesson about trying to trade toe-to-toe too much with Margs. Whenever they fight again, Cotto *should* win an easy decision. As for Williams, I think he needs to beat someone (other than his sort of 'flukey' win over Margs) before he starts running his mouth.

I think Cotto/Margs are head and shoulders far better than anyone else in that division right now, even though it IS a very loaded division. Clottey may be tough, but he is not skilled enough, IMO. Margs and Clottey II would probably be a "brutiful" fight, but I still think Margs would win. Cotto would expose Clottey's weak defense (especially his weak body defense) and be far too quick for him. And all that talk about Cotto's "weak" chin is BS. He took Margs best shots for nearly 11 full rounds. That should dispel any rumors of him having a weak chin.

With all the talk about Margs and Williams being so feared, I find it interesting that NOBODY seems interested in getting in the ring with Cotto, other than Margs. Now that he lost his first fight, everyone is acting as if Cotto is no good, or something... Even though Cotto has ALREADY beaten everyone in the division other than Margs/Williams/Clottey. Berto, as well, but he is waaay too green to be getting in the ring with any of the top guys. Why did Clottey call him out? You usually call out guys ranked HIGHER than yourself, not lower. And I can't BELIEVE that b/c Clottey hurt his bicep they are now saying that f'n JUDAH is going to get a shot at Margs. How does THAT work?!?

Aside from all of the Margs/Williams/Clottey/Judah talk, who does Miguel Cotto fight next, since it seems like no one in the Top 5 is willing to fight him, even though most boxing writers STILL have Cotto ranked #1, ahead of Williams and Clottey.

Margo battered Cotto, made him quit and gave him a complete beating to the head and body. Yeah he pretty much destroyed him. Margo has earned his shot at the big money with DLH

Hey frakie yeah i said cotto was going to win and i give all the respect in the world but i think cotto is still better than margarito and when they fight again cotto is going to win but im with you in one thing paul williams needs to shut the hell up.Hey somecoolname im going to break it down for you marg and cotto are the most fear man in boxing.nut you do gat a big point no one is calling out cotto think about it they will make more money fighting cotto than fighting marg thy will be on a bigger stage fighting cotto but no one is calling him out and the reason is any fighter ho saw that fight knows that if cotto will hit them like he did marg in the first 6 round nobody in their right mind will want to fight cotto so he is the most fear man in boxing.Hey Max Fuckswell i dont know what fight would you watching caused i only saw marg win two rounds out of 11 and when cotto when down was becaused he had no air not becaused marg was beating him up i give marg all the credit in the world it as a great fight and i cant wait for the rematch.

JSR, I agree mostly with what you said. I told people after that fight that ANY other Welterweight in the world would have been blasted out of there in the first 6 rounds if they had been hit with the shots Cotto was hitting Margs with, and I think that is the main reason no one is calling him out. I don't agree with your scoring, though. I had the bout @ 5 rounds Cotto, 4 rounds Margs, and one even through 10, giving Cotto a 1point margin going into the 11th.
