Mosley Looking for the Sweet Sugary Taste of Victory
Posted by Laura De La Torre on 08.22.2008

Former lightweight, welterweight and junior middleweight champion Shane Mosley (44-5, 37 KOs) is set to take on former welterweight and light middleweight champion Ricardo Mayorga (29-6, 23 KOs) in a scheduled 12-round bout on September 27th, at the Staples Center in California. Mosley, 36 years old, anticipates to be victorious in his bout against Mayorga to hopefully face current WBA welterweight champion, Antonio Margarito. However, 34 year old Mayorga plans on giving him a fight to the finish.

Most would say that Mosley has some catching up to do, beginning with two consecutive loses to Winky Wright, which quite honestly, plummeted his boxing career at the time, but made a comeback with five consecutive wins until his loss last November against Miguel Cotto (in which if one recalls, was a very close bout as all three judges scored the fight 115-113 for Cotto). Mosley, generally a smaller welterweight than other boxers in the division, would contribute his loses to his size alone, however one cannot overlook just how extremely talented of a boxer he has been; a very sound technician in his style of boxing where he has been known for his quick and swift movements in the ring, but lacks punching power.

On the other hand, Mayorga has defeated Vernon Forrest twice in 2003 but was also defeated by Cory Spinks. Since then, he has gained weight and lost to Puerto Rican sensation, Felix Trinidad and the Golden Boy himself, Oscar De la Hoya in '04 & '06. In November of '07, Mayorga had a 10 round majority decision victory over now retired, Fernando Vargas, where Mayorga won the majority of the first rounds, but started to lose stamina and power as the fight continued.

If Mosley can get through the first rounds, I would expect Mosley to win, perhaps by decision or a later round KO. Nonetheless, if Mayorga can get to Mosley with the same skilled techniques as Forrest did, utilizing his jab, fast footwork, and right hand counter shots, you can expect Mayorga to take victory.

Either way, without any title on the line or major significance, I expect an entertaining scrap.

Mayorga having skilled techniques?! Never happening. He should seriously retire. His act is getting old.

Hi Carlos,
Thanks for your comment.
Ricardo Mayorga is definitely an older fighter, but has defeated many great fighters as well. You can say his act is getting old with his trash talks in press conferences and pre-fight events, but seems to only do this to psych his opponents and get the adrenaline pumping for the fight. I've seen this in person, and it is quite a show that he puts on!
Nonetheless, it'll be an interesting fight since both have fought similar fighters in the past.
