More on Darchinyan’s Brilliant Conquest of Super Flyweight Division
Posted by Igor Frank on 11.04.2008

Did you know that Vic and his manager sent faxes to their promoter Gary Shaw for about a month requesting that he would make a fight with Mijares? Gary Shaw did not think it was such a good idea for Vic, he had to be convinced. Vic promised Gary, like he promised to all the media that he would destroy Mijares and then knock him out. Mr. Shaw finally gave up and told Vic if you do that I will kiss your feet in the ring and then he called Lou DiBella, promoter for Mijares, and the fight was set up in five minutes.
Darchinyan kept his promise - he floored his opponent with a crushing uppercut that Mijares never saw at the end of first stanza and continued to systematically destroy his adversary until he finished him with a thunderous left hand at the end of ninth frame.
Elated Gary Shaw kept his promise too; he climbed into the ring with all his might and kissed Vic's feet.

In a post fight press conference, Darchinyan said that he doesn't fight for money; he fights for pride, he wants to make history. He wants his children to know that their father is a great fighter. How refreshing! But these were not just words to make fans and media happy or to create an image; this is how Vic feels. How do I know this?

Yesterday I spoke on the phone with a man in Darchinyan's corner, Albrik Nazarian, a dentist who is responsible for Vic's mouthpiece. He told me that the night before the fight Vic had a terrible tooth ache and could not sleep. He asked Dr. Nazarian to help him with his problem, but not to mention it to any body. He slept for an hour an a half that night, but he wanted to fight no matter what. "This is inside information," said Dr. Nazarian over the phone as he was boarding a plane to Houston, but it is the truth."

Consider this and his victory becomes even more incredible. Lou DiBella, Christian Mijares and his manager gave Vic a lot of respect at the post fight press conference and he deserves it. He gave Mijares a boxing lesson and then he knocked him out. Because of his punching power and an awkward style of throwing punches many forget that he had a very extensive amateur experience and he knows his way around the ring, which was obviously proven on Saturday night. Vic wants to fight Fernando Montiel next to unify all the belts and I do not see a reason why this fight shouldn't take place in the near future. I can't wait to see the little big man in the ring; he is the champion people want to get behind.
