Five Reasons Why De La Hoya Will Beat Pacquiao
Posted by Ramon Aranda on 12.01.2008

Though Oscar De La Hoya is currently only a 2 to 1 favorite, the consensus seems to be that De La Hoya ‘should' win. Whether he will or not is something we'll have to wait to find out but today, let's look at five reasons why Oscar should be victorious on December 6th.

1. Oscar is simply too big. - Let's face it, although they'll be meeting at 147 pounds, it's safe to assume that come fight night, Oscar will likely have another 10 pounds or so on Manny Pacquiao. You couple that with the fact that Oscar is 5'10 ½" and has a 73-inch reach, over Manny's 5'6½" frame and 67-inch wingspan and you've got yourself quite an advantage for the Golden Boy. With Oscar's exceptional jab, this could be an easy fight should he stay on the outside and pepper Manny with that hard left. As the old saying goes, a good big man, always beats a good little man rings true and this one should be no different.

2. De La Hoya's power is key. - We know Oscar can punch, specifically with that left hook of his. We also know that Manny can take a punch. However, Manny has two knockout losses in his career against guys much lighter, and we've seen him get rocked a couple of times by guys like Juan Manuel Marquez and Oscar Larios. I assure you, Oscar punches much harder than both of those guys. Against smaller opposition, Oscar thrives on landing bombs from the outside and if Marquez stunned him in both of their fights, how do we expect him to take one flush on the chin by a guy who's fought as high as 160 pounds? De La Hoya wants the knockout, and he may very well get it.

3. Oscar can take Manny's punch. - Given that he's the naturally bigger guy and given that only Bernard Hopkins with his sledgehammer left hook to the body was able to stop De La Hoya, it's safe to say that he should be able to take Manny's punch. Being that he'll likely have no problems with Manny's power, we can expect Oscar to be willing to take a punch to give one back. This should make for a more aggressive Oscar which is bad news for the Pac-Man.

4. So much motivation. - Oscar De La Hoya is in the twilight of his career and getting yet another opportunity to unseat the current pound for pound king (he's fought Hopkins, Mayweather and Whitaker as p4p champs) is a great way to end or be close to finishing his career. He doesn't want to end his career on a bad note and although he's mentioned the possibility of fighting beyond 2008 if he wins, should he retire, he'd love to have the distinction of knocking off Manny Pacquiao, something that seems as difficult a thing to do as any. Though Erik Morales has one win over Pacquiao, Manny has put a hurting on Morales, Barrera and to an extent Marquez, giving De La Hoya another reason to want to hurt Pacquiao. Pride. Sure he's not born in Mexico like those other three, but Oscar is of Mexican decent and what better thing for him and his Mexican and Mexican-Americans fans than to derail the Pac-Express. Come hell or high water, Oscar won't leave that ring until he ends Pacquiao's reign as p4p king.

5. Oscar is much too smart. - Oscar is a student of the game and I'm pretty sure he saw Manny's two bouts against Juan Manuel Marquez; the one guy who's given Manny problems. Oscar is a bigger and more refined version of Marquez and you can bet that he's studied those fights. All he has to do really is follow the blue print and a win should be more than attainable.

Stay tuned tomorrow for Five Reasons Why Pacquiao Will Beat De La Hoya!

[Ed. note - I want to point out once again that this is not my official prediction. This column only serves to look at the advantages that De La Hoya possesses. A similar article will go up on Wednesday that talks about five reasons why Pacquiao will beat De La Hoya. Again this is NOT a prediction.]

Nice post! I agree with most points, especially the size advantage. This is hardly a fair fight considering at what weights these two have been fighting at recently. Pacquiao started at 105! Unbelievable, but I guess the big bucks talk.

Also, as for JM Marquez, the guy that gave Pacquiao all those problems and arguably won both fights, well his trainer Nacho Berestain is co-training Oscar for this fight. If any trainer knows how to beat Pacquiao, its Berestain. Oh, and Oscar's co-trainer, Angelo Dundee is no slouch either.

As bad as I want Pacquiao to lose, this is just not a fair way to go about it, IMO. He should maybe fight Zorrita Soto and then maybe Ricky Hatton if he wants to go as high as 140.

Nonetheless, I will still enjoy DLH's midpround destruction of PacMan!

Great article, I'll be waiting for the next one tom. As for Ronaldhino, heck if I lose big bucks on every event that Pacman is involve and seeing each great Mexican fighters go out defeated, I'd be pissed off too and wonder the day when Pacquiao will succomb. Goodluck on Dec. 6th, hope you didn't bet your house this time?!

nonsense. Pacquiao was 16 fighting at 106. He hasn't touched the canvass in the 2000s. Bigger refined Marquez? Marquez is a disciplined counter puncher with timing, and De La Hoya relied on flurries and his advantage in speed. This is a different speed and when was the last time you saw him with a devastating flurry? Can't wait for the fight. Tired of people talking in terms of tape measures. you should be carpenters not fight analysts.

Hmmm... For JMM the first fight one of the judges didn't know you can score the first round 10-6 round. 3 knock downs and winning that round. He even admitted he was wrong. So Manny could have won that. For the 2nd fight, knock down in the third round won it and JMM still says Pacman has no power. For having Nacho its a great move, but JMM is the master of counter punching. Plus he is used to the speed Manny has. Even if you have the same trainer doesn't mean you can replicate what another fight can do. As far as having Nacho plus Dundee, and Oscar refferring to Nacho as the best trainer. Why did Mayweather senior say, If nacho was the best trainer why did they have to get Dundee? Their both strategist. I think its hard to call since there are so many what ifs. Just have to wait and see.

you all don't know boxing! de la hoya is a coward who just wants to fight for the money.. intelligent or smart as you may call it, he's a coward boxer who doesn't want to get hit.. that's why even the mexicans are rooting for pacquiao on this fight.. come dec 6, you will all weep and see! you may start calling pacquiao the bus driver, coz he's gonna take de la hoya to boxing school!!!

Letºs see if what you are talking Mr. Aranda if correct this coming Saturday. If the tide turn the other way around it might be your guy ODLH will kiss the canvass before 12th round ends.

The better guy wins!!!

Five Reasons Why Pacquiao Will beat De La Hoya

1. Oscar is simply not on his prime, ODH can't pull the trigger and he will easily get tired. He is old too. Oscar has too many trainers he will be confuse during his fight with Manny.
2. Speed is the key, Manny has the speed and agility to fight with Oscar, not to mention he also got the power. And with speed and power combined you will see Oscar on the floor on the late round. Oscar can take a punch? Let us wait and see.
3. Oscar can take a punch, how many? Manny will barrage Oscar with power punch and Oscar body would just give up on him on the later round. Oscar Dela Hoya is dreaming if he can put down many Pacquiao with his left hook. Let see him pull the trigger first.
4. So much motivation? Manny has more motivation, the whole country love him and want him to win, The whole country of the Philippines is relying and supporting him to up lift the pride and to bring joy to his beloved country, how about Oscar is the whole country behind his back. Manny have the courage and the heart to win and he will never surrender, and certainly will never back down from Oscar. Manny is not just fighting for personal reason he is fighting for his country. That’s motivation
5. Oscar is much too smart, Oscar maybe a student of the game but a part time student. He might be studying a lot, but he can not or will never learn all of those because he cannot pick up easily. It will only confuse him. Unless they are fighting as a promoter or a businessman, then hands down Oscar will win, however this is boxing, in this game you have to be a full time boxer to win. Manny is a boxer and Warrior.
Manny will win

Fuck you ronaldhino..Manny will destroy De la hoya in 8 rounds..i hope you dont bet your wife and your mama for this fight! lol

i dont think so, you are rating oskie as if he was still in his 20s, if thats the case i will go with you.. but oskie as i have seen his previous fights.. he has a hard time hurting smaller guys and then in the later rounds fades. When he fights steve forbes(a light hitter) makes his face swollen its like a swarm of bees bitten him, and i dont see that happen this dec. 06. I guarantee that!

Posted By: noel (Guest)  on December 02, 2008 at 03:57 AM

Did JMM ever hurted Manny Pacquiao. Hell no!, out of balance , Yes! Did JMM beat Pacman twice, hell No! JMM kissed the canvas 4 times in 24 rounds, that would would tell who's the better man of the two. As for Dela Hoya, let's just see what will happen. Hard to predict the outcome as what Pacquaio said. See you after the fight!

Posted By: donzky (Guest)  on December 02, 2008 at 04:04 AM

From the very beginning before the bout came thru and for obvious reason De la Hoya looked much bigger but remember the best boxer in the heavyweight was never the biggest nor the heaviest. Ali and all other boxing greats proved that. If boxing were tailored for the biggest and heaviest then the past history of boxing esp. in the heavyweight div. would have shown us much bigger and heavier champions. The point is, although being big and tall can be advantage, history tells us that is not so! The right weight and height coupled with great boxing skills (speed, power shot, etc,) always prevails.

I don't agree to the prediction of ramon aranda.Ramon ,are you God who can see the future? Before you make a conclusion you should wait for the outcome of the fight. Study the life of Mike Tyson and you will be enlightened. Mike fought bigger boxers but he floored majority of them. You will eat your words come december 7,my friend.

you are definitely wrong this time!!!...you will see how oscar kissing the canvas for the first time because of tremendous punch from pacquiao...before its a one punch from hopkins on oscar body,,,,now its different...and its first time to be happened with bronze boy (not golden on dec. 6 ....okay.....hehehehehe

Posted By: tarzan ako (Guest)  on December 02, 2008 at 04:16 AM

hey Ramon Aranda. oscar larios didn't even manage to hurt pacquiao, he was played like a toy by the pacman during that fight..

Posted By: jv (Guest)  on December 02, 2008 at 04:48 AM

i agree with most of your points. but i don't agree that oscar is a refined version of marquez. oscar is just simply more exciting to watch than marquez. marquez is still better than oscar when it comes to technical skills.

Posted By: jowee (Guest)  on December 02, 2008 at 04:55 AM

dela hoya is bigger than manny...but manny has the speed and power to beat oscar.....eventhough oscar is taller and smarter than manny....manny has the heart that he cant easy to dicourage the figh.... i believe that manny will win this fight...godbless and more power manny

Posted By: ed (Guest)  on December 02, 2008 at 05:25 AM

I just wish Manny fights well and win or loss he is still Manny. On the other note, I hope you are going to keep this 5 points if ever ODLH losses or may be knock out. Just like the many writings when Manny fought JMM, Barera, & David, & others.

Posted By: bruce_dwarrior (Guest)  on December 02, 2008 at 05:49 AM

good prediction, now you can double your fortune by betting it in favor of who you predicted to win "IF YOUR ARE THAT CERTAIN OF THE OUTCOME.

I have one big reason why Pacman will win and he's got a ton of it, HEART!

Posted By: Leonardo (Guest)  on December 02, 2008 at 07:24 AM

It is true that the advantage of DLH is the height and weight..but one more important thing is De Lo Hoya can't beat the heart of Manny.

Im surely say that Manny can beat DLH coz the heart of Filipino is realy a true fighter and this is the advantage of Manny..

We are 100% expect that Manny can Beat DLH..

Go!Go!Go! Pacman

Your are a true fighter ever!!!

Your are the are the proud of Filipinos......

Lets see what happen on dec 6
as i believe pacquiao is gonna beat ODLH

This is absolutely TRUE ten years ago.

The one and only reason Oscar will distroy Manny is "Because he can" Manny will be too little-too late and you mark my words, Oscar by KO (either left or right). Manny is good, he just is not big enough.. It is all about money and Freddie, you sound like the trigger has been pulled on you one too many times. Arum has deep pokets and just wants to fill them more. Oscar has all the $$ he needs, it is motoviation that makes him fight just one more time. Although you may think I am an Oscar fan (and used to be) I simply believe "A good big guy" beats a "small good guy" everytime. Have a nice flight home Manny.............

Both ODLH and Pacquiao will lose. The true Champion will be the referee!

I don't agree on oscar can take manny's punch. We just have to wait come fight night. Ok???

Posted By: joey (Guest)  on December 02, 2008 at 10:19 AM

well i would really "LOVE" to see how a big guy get beaten and hit the canvass buy a small guy like manny... ODLH should beat manny if not, then That'll be pretty much embarrasing... Go kick his ass manny!!! YEAH!

Posted By: awesome cool dude (Guest)  on December 02, 2008 at 10:51 AM

for sure manny gonna kick oscar ass in 5 round

Mr. Ramon Aranda I think all your blablabla... are just mere rubbish trash. Let me predict the game for you, and you better listen. Before, nobody predicted that Eric Morales will roll on the Canvass because of Idol Pacman's punch. Now! are there any commentaries predicted that Oscar will not just kiss the canvass but with the other two possibilities either Oscar will run away from the ring during the fight because of Idol Pacmans punch or kneel on the canvass and beg Idol Pacman to stop punching because his face is too messed up? Mr. Aranda you should also consider these things because if Idol Pacman is in the ring unexpected things happen and you know it!

Posted By: Victor Michael Maniego (Guest)  on December 02, 2008 at 11:19 AM

Thanks for the comments guys, but remember, this is NOT a prediction. This is merely looking into reasons why he should win. I will be writing a new article that states five reasons Pacquiao will beat De La Hoya. The two-part column is only being done for the sake at looking at what each fighter brings and why it's possible either of them can win. Stay tuned.

Just can't wait for Dec 7th and go back to the articles posted by these so-called "boxing experts". You'll see that they will post another article saying something like this...

"I knew eversince that pacquiao will win..."

Posted By: Bading (Guest)  on December 02, 2008 at 12:13 PM

I've always been a fan of ODLH, and the man has taken on all comers. I think he has too much size and power to lose to Pacman. I predict that he'll when with a 6-8 round knockout.

HOWEVER, I hope Oscar loses. He doesn't need the huge payday(unlike Manny). If he wins, he just beat up a guy who has fought at 130 or less for all but one of the past 13 years. I don't think Pacman can hurt Oscar. Don't forget, Oscar never got decked by Sweet Pea, Chavez, Mosely, Trinidad, or Vargas. Manny would have to win this fight on points. However, I doubt he can physically carry around so much extra weight, and maintain effective agressiveness. Oscar, will maul him on the ropes, and wear him down with body punches. Eventually, Oscar will knock an exhausted Pacman out with his patented left hook, or right cross. I just hope that the beating doesn't take too much out of Manny, who has great fights available at 135, or with Hatton at 140. One bad beatdown can ruin a great fighter.

I hope, I'm wrong. I hope Manny pulls off a miracle, and shames Oscar for picking the "little guy". I just can't figure out an intellectually honest way for Manny to win, unless Oscar suddenly shows up washed up.

My heart is with Pacman, but I don't see it happening.

Although i wont agree/disagree with you After reading your prediction it seems that you completely dont know what goes on in a fight. you're basically an amateur at analyzing fights.

RE: Noob. I said it once and I'll say it again. This is NOT a prediction. This is simply looking at reasons Oscar should win the fight. Tomorrow I post five reasons why Pacquiao will win the fight.

Ramon,

You do great work here. Your post makes perfect sense. Anybody who bothered to read your whole post should know that you're offering two-sided ANALYSIS today and tomorrow. It's unfortunate that the overly emotional Manny groupies can't accept balanced evaluations. Idiotic comments come along with working on a blog. Don't sweat it. Keep up the good work.

ronaldhino you talk a lot, watch this fight of ODLH versus Manny Paquiao on Dec.6. You know what this is not an ordinary boxing only, This is war between ODLH and Paquiao. Mutch better you put Tape or staple your big mouth and opet it after the Fight.

good analysis but m just wondrin, when 5'8" eric morales drained himself at 130lbs just to get the trilogy w/ the pacman, the stamina and power has very much declined, how much more the 5'10 oscar, can he take a liver punch from a heavier pacman? remember power is directly proportional w/ weight..... just my 2 cents...

It was so funny watching DLH get trapped in his own corner as Manny beat his face in. It was a massacre, Manny was the supposed underdog. Give me a break, Manny can take on Hatton and Mayweather. Seriously watch this fight on Youtube; DLH didn't even have a chance.

Posted By: Turner (Guest)  on December 07, 2008 at 06:16 AM

Give the guy a break. He's just pointing out the advantages each fighter has over the other. I'm not sure how good in reading the people who diss this guy are but he has another article on Why Pacquiao will beat De La Hoya. It is clearly written on his blog. So please, read carefully before posting such rude comments.

By the way, congratulations Manny! You make us Filipinos proud and happy again! MABUHAY KA!!!
