411's Live Coverage of De La Hoya vs. Pacquiao
Posted by Ramon Aranda on 12.06.2008

The time to talk is no more. Tonight, Oscar De La Hoya will battle Manny Pacquiao in the biggest fight of the year. 411mania is here in Las Vegas and we'll be bringing you live coverage of the main event along with Juan Manuel Lopez' title defense and results of the undercard bouts, both televised and non-televised.

---------------------------------

Current odds are set to -185 (De La Hoya), +155 (Pacquiao)

Televised Fights:

Oscar De La Hoya vs. Manny Pacquiao
Victor Ortiz vs. Jeffrey Resto
Juan Manuel Lopez vs. Sergio Medina (WBO jr. featherweight title bout)
Daniel Jacobs vs. Victor Lares

---------------------------------

We are now live!

In the opening contest, undefeated sensation Daniel Jacobs improved to 13-0 with 12 knockouts as he bombarded Victor Lares (14-4, 3 KOs) in the second round of their scheduled eight. Jacobs made no bones about looking to take Lares out early and he did just that with an assortment of combinations that Lares couldn't defend against. In round two, Jacobs dropped Lares with a myriad of punches and although Lares beat the count, the fight was waved off. It was perhaps stopped a little too early but it was clear that he was outclassed.

Manny Pacquiao is shown on the monitor's entering the arena to a mixed chorus of boos and cheers.

Sergio Medina (33-1, 18 KOs) vs. Juan Manuel Lopez (23-0-21 KOs)
12-Rounds, WBO Junior Featherweight Title Bout

Round 1: They feel each other out as Lopez begins to unleash with the jab and left crosses. Lopez suddenly traps the Argentinan and unleashes some major left hooks to the body and down goes Medina. Medina makes it to his feet but is welcomed with another barrage of punches to the head and down he goes again. Boy this guy is not taking punches well. He beats the count and Lopez goes wild again with hooks and crosses to the head and down he goes AGAIN! Fight is over as Joe Cortez waves it off. This was a horrible performance by Medina who looked like he was scared from the get go. Lopez stays unbeaten and again shows why he's a major force to be reckoned with.

Winner by 1st round TKO and still WBO junior featherweight champ, Juan Manuel Lopez

---------------------------------

Due to the nature of the quick knockout win for Lopez, we are nwo getting a swingbout between Cesar Lopez (20-6, 4 KOs) and Richie Mepranium (14-2-1, 3 KOs).

It was an action filled fight between the Filipino Mepranium and the Texas born fighter Lopez. Though they stood toe to toe for most of the fight, it was Mepranium who was landing the cleaner and harder blows. Lopez fought hard but was outpunched as Mepranium earned himself a unanimous 6-round decision.

Victor Ortiz and Jeffrey Resto have made their ways into the ring and are now getting instructions by the referee.

Victor Ortiz (22-1-1, 17 KOs) vs. Jeffrey Resto (22-2, 13 KOs)
12-Rounds NABO Junior Welterweight Title Bout

Round 1: It's easy to see why the young Ortiz gave Oscar a shiner in sparring as he blasted Resto in the first round with hard left hands. Ortiz twice downed Resto with one-two combinations right to the kisser. Though Resto didn't seem particulary hurt, he never saw the lefts coming as he found himself on the seat of his pants. Good round for Ortiz.

Round 2: Ortiz comes right after Resto and lands a nice uppercut that sends him crashing again down again. Fight is waved off. Wow. Talk about underwhelming undercard bouts. Let's just hope the main event isn't over in the first two rounds.

Winner by 2nd round TKO and still NABO junior welterweight titlist, Victor Ortiz!

---------------------------------

Looks like HBO PPV will now air a fight from the non-televised portion of the card.

Juan Manuel Marquez gets on camera and tells the fans his prediction: Oscar De La Hoya by 7th round KO.

Tito Ortiz who is also in attendance predicts an 8th round KO for De La Hoya.

Oscar is now being shown on the monitor's getting his hands wrapped as GBP CEO Richard Schaefer and Freddie Roach, trainer of Manny Pacquiao look on.

Up next....our main event of the evening which will likely get under way (including the introductions) at about 11 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. PT.

Manny Pacquiao is shown shadowboxing in his lockerroom as his team has now entered the ring holding his many title belts in the air. Looks like PacMan will enter first.

The atmosphere is unlike anything you've ever experienced. Celebrities, world champions and fans alike are ready to see what we hope will be a fight of the year candidate. Cheers for both men can be heard throughout the arena and now we see video of Manny putting on his gloves. The anticipation is unreal!

Now we rise for three national anthems. First The Philippines, then Mexico then the United States.

The precious few moments before a mega fight. What a nerve wrecking experience for most of the fans and we wouldn't have it any other way.

We now see clips of Manny's highlights as he readies himself before coming out to the ring.

And here comes the best fighter in the world pound for pound, making his way to the ring...to the tunes of "We Will Rock You".

"LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLET'S GET RRRREADY TO RUMBBBBLLLLLLLLLLLLEEEEE"

Enjoy the main event!

Manny Pacquiao (47-3-2, 35 KOs) vs. Oscar De La Hoya (39-5, 30 KOs)
12-Rounds, Welterweight Bout

Referee in charge: Tony Weeks

Round 1: Here we go - the wait is over!! Ding Ding....Oscar starts first with the left jab. He's keeping himself on the outside while Manny tries to pump his own jabs. Manny lands a quick right hand and Oscar rips an uppercut to the body. Oscar looks so much bigger than Manny in there right now, but let's see if it makes any difference tonight. Manny ducks a couple of left hooks and then lands a right of his own. Manny is now starting to open up a little as the crowd erupts. Oscar lands a right to the body then eats a straight left. Pacquiao bobs and weaves and lands two right jabs then a left. Oscar hits Manny with a jab and misses with a right as Manny works his way off the ropes. A straight left lands for Manny and then he makes Oscar miss two left hooks. Good head movement by the PacMan. Oscar lands a right but then Manny makes him miss with a few hooks. Good round for Pacquiao who impresses with his defense.

Round 2: Oscar comes out with a left hook to start the second and Manny lands two right hooks. Pacquiao is on his toes and still making Oscar miss. A left is partially blocked by De La Hoya. Chants of "Manny, Manny" and "Oscar, Oscar" fill the arena. Manny still tries to paw with his right jab which seems a bit too short. A one-two lands for Manny who looks quite faster than Oscar up to this point. Good hook by Pacquiao and then a right uppercut lands for PacMan. Oscar misses a right and then his jab. He chases Pacquiao down but misses with a straight right. A left now lands for De La Hoya and then another one. Now Pacquiao lands his own left and darts out of the way. Another solid round for Pacquiao.

Round 3: De La Hoya opens up with a triple jab then a right to the body. Oscar falls short with four jabs then lands a short right hand. Manny lands a straight left and then keeps his guard up to avoid the oncoming combo. De La Hoya looks to land a big punch but he's taking too long. Pacquiao remains moving side to side and now lands a straight left hand. The speed is definitely benefiting Manny so far.Oscar misses with a left and takes two punches to the body. Oscar seems to be waiting too much. A right lands for Manny and they nearly butt heads. A straight left lands for Manny to the body and Oscar connects with a right hand. Pacquiao definitely the busier of the two; round ends.

Round 4: It's been all Manny through three; let's see if Oscar has something up his sleeve. They trade hooks and then Pacquiao lands two straigiht left hands right on the button. It doesn't seem like Manny is hurting Oscar but he's landing more frequently. A jab lands for De La Hoya and then Manny runs into a right. Manny now lands two combinations to the head and to the body. Oscr lands a right to the top of Pacquiao's head. A one-two lands for Pacquiao and Oscar only responds witih a couple of jabs. De La Hoya lands a body shot and Manny shoots some back. A straight left lands for Pacquiao and then another one. Crowd is going wild for PacMan as he's controlling the tempo of this round...and fight so far. Another solid round for the pride of the Philippines.

Round 5: Oscar quickly connects with two straight right hands before Pacquiao connects with a left. A hard right hand lands for Pacquiao as Oscar's head is snapped back. Only jabs are coming from the Golden Boy. Manny lands another combination. Here comes Manny as he tries to flurry midway through the fifth. Another combination lands for Manny. Now a right hook to the body lands for Pacquiao. Oscar lands a hard uppercut but Manny tells him to bring it on. They trade punches to close the fifth and Manny's looking fantastic.

De La Hoya is beginning to develop a small mouse under his right eye.

Round 6: Oscar's fans begin to chant to try and get him going. They're still fighting from the outside which has surprisingly not benefited De La Hoya. Manny lands two to the head and then a hook upstairs. Oscar makes him miss with a hook and rips to the body. A straight left lands for Pacquiao then another straight left. It's been all PacMan who's been the busier of the two. Manny lands two lefts and then avoids a jab. A jab then wham, a one-two for Manny. Oscar looks very slow. They trade punches again to end the round. Unofficially I have Manny winning every round including the sixth.

Oscar's left eye is pretty red.

Round 7: Oscar lands a clean right hand to open the round. Manny keeps moving to his right and connects with a left hand. Manny goes to the body as Oscar backs up. Now a left lands to the body and Oscar gets on the defensive. Now Manny throws a quick combo in the corner and Oscar just looks to block. Manny lands a furious combo and Oscar gets stunned. Manny is unloading on De La Hoya and he looks in trouble. WOW!! Oscar is trying to defend himself but the PacMan is simply unleashing a barrage of punches. Oscar is on the ropes and this one could get stopped. Oscar finally throws back but its too late and the round is finally over. Unbelievable!

Round 8: Oscar better pick up the pace in this round because he is simply getting tattooed. Manny lands two rights to the body. Oscar lands a stiff left jab but nothing else. A right now lands for De La Hoya but Manny throws a three punch combo in return. Manny works to the body and he has Oscar against the ropes again. De La Hoya can't return fire. Manny lands two jabs and then a cross. Now Oscar tries to land a combination to the body but it's not effective. Manny flurries to end the round.

Oscar's left eye is starting to shut and the right one isn't getting any better.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA HAS QUIT ON HIS STOOL...THIS ONE IS OVER!!!!

I can't believe it! De La Hoya won't come out for the 9th round and Manny Pacquiao has upset Oscar De La Hoya in stunning fashion!

Winner by TKO after the 8th round, Manny "PacMan" Pacquiao!!

Stay tuned for updates from the post-fight press conference!

who won

Posted By: carlos (Guest)  on December 06, 2008 at 10:41 PM

so....oscar's bigger and hits harder than manny. will he be able to deal with manny's relentlessness and highly effective aggression? i beleive oscar's got 1 chance only....knockout. and to that i say...good luck! there are weight factors to be considered here. i've never seen manny at 147 so there's always that unknown component. however, i see him wearing down and abusing oscar from the opening bell if oscar can't knock him out. if that doesn't happen it will be a matter of whether oscar survives for 12 rounds or wins by tko late. here's to hoping for a good fight!

The corner wasn't going to let him come out anyways and it would have been a bad idea. No way Oscar would have won and they would have stopped it the next round anyways. Great win for Manny.

I was stunned by the way pacman destroyed the golden boy. I am Filipino and I am definitely routing for Manny Pacquiao, I have my doubts as Oscar is bigger, but that did not stop the pacman from defacing his opponent. GO PACMAN!!!!!!
