MILPITAS, CA – Yesterday afternoon, Golden Boy Promotions held a press conference at the Dave & Busters in Milpitas to discuss the upcoming tripleheader on HBO that will take place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA. Though James Kirkland wasn't able to make it, hometown favorite Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero was there along with SoCal's Victor Ortiz. Both fighters were in high spirits as they showed their eagerness to be a part of the HBO Boxing After Dark card on March 7.
"I've finally made it out to fight in the Bay Area and I've been wanting this for a long time. I'm really excited and can't wait. I've worked really hard to get to this point and to get out there in front of my hometown fans is going to be great," said an elated Guerrero who's making only his second appearance in San Jose – about a 30 minutes away from his native Gilroy. Guerrero (23-1-1, 16 KOs), already a former two-time featherweight titleholder is entering only the second fight of his new contract with GBP. Referencing to his split with former promoter Goossen Tutor and new promoter Golden Boy, he said, "look, it's only my second fight with them [GBP] and I'm already fighting in San Jose and on HBO!"
"The Ghost" has acquired quite the fan following in the Bay Area and it's only fitting that he finally get to perform in his own backyard. Guerrero will be opening up the card against Daud "Cino" Yordan, (15-0, 10 KOs), a fighter who sports a shiny record but that Guerrero knows little about. Still, he says he expects a tough fight and is fully prepared to give a good performance.
"I'm going to do what I do best, come out and put on a good show. It's up to the fans to come out and support the fights and I hope they do."
A jubilant Victor Ortiz (23-1-1, 18 KOs) seemed equally as excited to be on the card. "I'm excited to be on this great card with Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero and James Kirkland. I'm really excited to fight in the Bay Area because everyone has been asking me when I would fight up here and now I finally am." Ortiz will be taking on Mike Arnaoutis, (21-2-1, 10 KOs) in a 10-round junior welterweight bout. It's well known that Arnaoutis is a fighter that likes to keep his distance which could pose problems for the normally aggressive Ortiz but "Vicious Vic" points out that he'll adjust his gameplan accordingly.
"You can expect a great night from both me and my opponent on March 7th", said Ortiz.
Also on the card will be James Kirkland who will take on Joel Julio in what may prove to be an excellent bout. The HBO card will air at 10 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).
