Undefeated Juan Carlos Burgos Ready for a Major Test
Posted by Patrick Cassidy on 02.24.2009

Undefeated featherweight prospect Juan Carlos Burgos is in the final stages of his rough training camp in the famed Azteca Gym of Tijuana, Mexico. He is in preparation for this Friday's IBA championship bout with the veteran Omar Lizarraga, who has been in the ring with some of the featherweight division's best contenders and prospects.

Burgos is still trying to cope with a rough hand injury which cost him valuable ring time for this up and coming prospect. However, he believes his hand is full healed and he is ready to continue his path to a world title shot. "I have been training since early January and I don't feel any pain, what I want is to make my opponent feel it and win in spectacular fashion." Said Burgos as he packed for the trek to California.

Burgos seems to be on the verge of a world title shot, as he is rated in the top ten by several of the top sanctioning bodies in the sport. He and his handlers know however, that they can not afford to overlook the tough and prepared Lizarraga. "We want to give the fans a great show. If all goes well, Burgos will campaign for a major title very soon," said Ken Thompson of his protégé. "Interesting things are happening in the division and Juan Carlos should be ready for any challenge. The main one thus far, is coming out victorious over Lizarraga and then we will see."

To his credit, Lizarraga is not letting the hype surrounding Burgos affect him and he feels very confident he can pull off the shocking upset. "He is a great puncher, attacks the body very well, but I am ready to box him and not give him any angles," said Lizarraga. "He thinks this will be an easy fight, but he will soon find out he has been wrong all along." Said Lizarraga from his Big Bear, California, training camp.

The Burgos – Lizarraga main event caps what should be an excellent night of boxing, as Thompson Boxing promotions features a five bout card entitled "New Blood III" which is emanating from the Double Tree Hotel in Ontario, California. In the co-feature, Patrick Lopez, a two-time Olympian and frequent fixture of ESPN fight cards will take on Columbian, Jailer Berrio in an all South American clash. Also on the undercard is exciting undefeated prospect Mauricio Herrera, who will be challenging the dangerous Brian Gordon, who has won all of his fights by devastating knockout. The card will also feature the newly signed Abraham Lopez looking to advance his young career by taking on journeyman Manuel Sarabia.

Tickets for "New Blood III" are available and priced at $75, $45, and $30. To purchase, please call 714-935-0900.
