Marquez Stops Diaz in A Thriller, John and Juarez Fight To A Draw

HOUSTON, TX -- Juan Manuel Marquez made history with a spectacular 9th round stoppage of Juan Baby Bull Diaz. Even though Marquez won the fight in an incredible fashion and proved once again why he is one of the top pounds for pound fighters, he literally had to go through hell to get the victory. " I am 35 years old and I am at the peak of my career," said Mexican champion: " I only want to fight the best now."

The first round of the main event between Juan Manuel Marquez and a local favorite Juan Baby Bull Diaz had everyone on their feet in hysteria from the fierce action in the ring. This was a prelude for things to come. Brave combatants kept firing bombs at each with force and determination and with intermittent success going into the ninth round even on the judge's scorecards. In the fourth Diaz cut Marquez and in the 8th Marquez cut Diaz and then he hurt him with a combination that had Diaz trying to find his legs. Diaz came back strong in the ninth and was winning the round when he run-in into a sharp combination and found himself going down face first. Diaz got up on shaky legs, but Marquez turned on the heat and put his adversary down once again. The referee Rafael Ramos did not bother to count and stopped the fight. It is really hard to describe the action in the ring of this fight. My boss texted me with one simple word "Wow!!"

A sizzling fight with an exciting turn

I know it is only February but I have to call it a fight of the year.

In the semi main event of the evening Olympic silver medalist from Houston, Texas Rocky Juarez challenged undefeated featherweight champion from Indonesia Chris John for his WBA title. A passionate crowd at the Toyota Center in Houston cheered in anticipation of Rocky entering the ring and booed as Chris John's entrance was announced while "Rocky "song was played over the loudspeaker.

Even though the first round was tactical, Rocky was more aggressive. The pace picked up in the second stanza with both fighters unleashing lethal combinations. Rocky seized the initiative in the fourth stanza with a couple of heavy body shots that seemed to hurt the champion. Rocky got a deep cut on the left side of his eye from a right hand in the fifth and the champion tried to take advantage of the cut in the six and seemingly took over the momentum of the fight and won rounds 6 and 7. Rocky reasserted himself in the 8th with a huge left hook and a few very telling body blows, but it was very competitive round as John fired back in bunches. Many rounds were very close and hard to score with John being busier and Juarez landing the more telling blows. In the eleventh Rocky landed some very devastating combinations that hurt the champion. Going into the 12th round it looked like Rocky took over the momentum of the fight but the final stanza showed that both warriors decided to leave it all in the ring. This great title bout that left no one disappointed except for the decision had a fitting ending with all three judges scoring the fight the same 114-114. Looking at the judges scorecards Rocky needed to win the last two rounds to pull out a draw and he did just that. Even though Rocky did not win the fight, he fought like a true champion. I personally scored the fight for Juarez because I felt that in professional boxing we need to score damage , not activity, but on the other hand I can not argue with the judges looking at disparity in punch count.

Stay tuned for more quotes and analysis.

Awesome night of fights. I had John up by 4 rounds at the end of fight. Sure Jaurez sorta hurt him at the end but John was never really in trouble whereas John was outlanding Jaurez for the majority of rounds. Activity should score more if you are clearly outboxing your opponent. Much like i gave Marquez the majority of rounds against Diaz - he was landing the more clean effective punches.

I think John deserved the win but I'm also happy for him that he at least returns home with his title and with positive reviews from US media. Let's hope HBO gives him another date.

I very strongly disagree that the John-Juarez fight was a draw. It was a hometown decision and John really should have won that fight. Look at the statistics: 344-206 punches landed, 155-122 power shots, 29% - 26% accuracy, all favoring John. Even arguing the statistics don't tell the whole story, watch the fight again, and look at the rounds that Juarez won, then compare all those (punches thrown, landed, accuracy, power punches, etc.) and I guarantee you John will end up 'winning' those rounds. Unless you can measure the power/impact of Juarez' superior power, and the damage each fighter received, your statement is hyperbole. Besides, if you compare the faces of each fighter, who does it look like took more damage? Chris John was robbed. This was disgraceful.

What an incredible fight that was between Diaz and Marquez and a great night overall. Boxing has had some start to the year with more to come the next few weeks and months ahead.

The chances of Juan Manuel Lopez facing Floyd Maywheater are not that good. I would love to see that fight, but Floyd would reject it immediately, since he didn't except the challenge from Mosely. Juan has a better chance fighting the winner of the Hatton vs pacquiao, instead of Maywheather. I know it is not in this artical, but I heard it from Juan Manuel on the post fight interview on HBO last night, in case you were wondering what I was talking about.

Haven't seen John-Juarez yet, but Marquez-Diaz was one of the greatest fights I've seen in a long time. Diaz applied more pressure, but the majority of his flurries didn't land cleanly, and Marquez was more accurate while having more power. What is it with Diaz and cuts? He's gonna have to understand that they come with the sport. This is twice now that he's been cut and faded on his way to losing.

I can't say enough about Juan Manuel Marquez. He overcame adversity and won in devastating fashion. There's really nothing left for him at 135. He should fight the winner of Pacman/Hatton. If the winner doesn't fight him, he should fight the loser. I really don't think there are any other big names available for him at 135-140. Either way he's a true champion and future HOFer.

I don't think that juarez win the fight... it's really shamed of public in houston that just think juarez win. We can take a look at the review of the punch statistic that Chris John landed more punches! for damages... I disagree also, you can see the impact of ChrisJOhn punches on the face of Juarez! please be objective to see the fight! Draw just because Juarez is the hometown boys! It should be John's Night. Lucky to Juarez that that fight is the 1'st time John fight in US, so next fight.. John will be much-much better.OK
