Curveballs and Sliders 03.31.07: 2007 Season Preview
Posted by Jared Marcus on 03.31.2007

LEADING OFF

Hello all and welcome to the extra special, one and only, Curveballs and Sliders 2007 Major League Baseball season preview. I apologize for the delay, but this time it was completely intentional. Before we start however I would like to take a moment to address an important personal matter, so if you could bear with me for a moment.

Earlier this week I learned that the father of long-time reader and one of my oldest friends, Jimmy from Boston, has been diagnosed with lung cancer. I would like to ask all of you to take a minute to say a prayer for him. Whether you are religious or not and regardless of your own personal beliefs, I believe in the power of prayer, so one moment will be much appreciated. ……..Thank you.

Sorry for the somber moment everyone, but that was very important for me to say. Now back to the column itself and the reason the column was late.

If you are a regular visitor to the site you may have noticed that many of the 411 staffers have gotten together to do a roundtable preview of the 2007 MLB season. I chose not to participate in that roundtable since I was going to do a full preview in this space here. So I decided rather than post the column in the middle of their daily roundtables, I would wait until they were finished and then post this one last, as close to opening day as possible. Yes, that is right folks, I have decided to become the Triple H of 411mania baseball coverage. I don't work with anyone else, I demand that I go on last and of course, I always have to go over. So now, without further ado, let's get to the main event, the Curveballs and Sliders 2007 MLB Season Preview……but first……please rise for the singing of our national anthem and our special guest………………

MISS AREEETHA…..FRANKLAAHHHHHHH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Note: I hate explaining jokes, its one of my pet peeves, but in this case I have to give at least a sidebar in case anyone thinks I really don't know how to spell Aretha Franklin. Just know that this is a reference to a moment at Wrestlemania III involving Aretha Franklin and Vince McMahon, which should say it all)

No w onto the preview……….

THE TWO HOLE

Before we get to all the predictions, I first want to rank every team in baseball from 1 to 30. If you have been reading this column all off-season you have already seen my individual category rankings for lineups, rotations, bullpens and benches. Well now its time to put them all together and rank the overall quality of ever Major League team.

1) NEW YORK YANKEES
Strengths: Incredibly deep lineup, solid pitching depth, improved bullpen, improved clubhouse chemistry
Weaknesses: Age and injury concerns at the top of the rotation, potential declines from Posada and Rivera, defensive woes with Matsui, Abreu, Cano and Phelps, the A-Rod distraction factor
Analysis: The Yankees have their holes, as all teams do, but right now they are the best team in the game on paper and I think they are vastly improved over last season's ball club. I fully expect them to win another division title, but as for the playoffs, well that remains to be seen.

2) BOSTON RED SOX
Strengths: The best starting pitching in baseball, a very strong heart of the order, improved defense, Papelbon back at closer
Weaknesses: A potentially weak bottom third of the order, injury concerns with their top two starters, a questionable bullpen, not enough depth to cover the loss of Manny or Ortiz
Analysis: The Red Sox do have some question marks, but their pitching rotation could be one of the best of the last two decades and that alone should be enough to carry them. Putting Papelbon back at closer was the right move as their rotation could afford the loss, while there bullpen sorely needed the upgrade. I still think the Yanks will edge them out for the division again but pitching wins in October.

3) LOS ANGELES ANGELS
Strengths: Deep and talented rotation, one of the game's best bullpens, young talent, Vlad Guerrero
Weaknesses: Injury concerns with many of their starters, lack of protection for Vlad in the lineup, how will young talent handle the pressure of being so heavily counted on
Analysis: Few teams have better starting pitching than the Angels, and no team probably has better all around pitching. Even with the injury concerns of Colon and Weaver, the Angels have more than enough pitching depth to get by. Their lineup is not as good as it has been in years past but they still have Vlad Guerrero and although the Mariners will be better, the A's will be worse, meaning there are no real threats to the Angels in their division.

4) CLEVELAND INDIANS
Strengths: Very strong and deep lineup, fantastic bench and offensive depth, deep starting pitching
Weaknesses: Lack of overpowering pitching, weak bullpen, potentially weak defensive team
Analysis: Last year I picked the Indians to win it all and like all of my other picks in life, that one failed miserably. This year the Tribe seems to be a very trendy pick to at least win the division, if not the World Series. I was fully set to pick the Tigers to win the division and put the Indians in second because I just didn't think they had the arms to compete, but the injury to Kenny Rogers changed all that. I think that was just the thing to give the Indians the edge, albeit it by a hair.

5) DETROIT TIGERS
Strengths: A strong lineup with no weak outs from top to bottom, a strong bullpen including the game's best setup man, young pitchers primed to take the next step forward
Weaknesses: The loss of Kenny Rogers and questions about the 5th member of the rotation, concern over the innings of Bonderman and Verlander, the thinking that after last season they are due for some bad breaks
Analysis: Everything fell just right for the Tigers last year (well until the final week). Every one of their players pretty much had career years and there is a big question about how likely it is they can repeat that success. I still think top to bottom they are one of the best teams in baseball on paper. In fact before the injury to the Gambler, I had the Tigers ranked as the 2nd best team overall. Its not that Rogers is that great, but the top five teams are so close that the ranking could have gone either way and the Rogers injury was just enough for the other teams to skip past them. I still think the Tigers will have a great season and be in the hunt for a playoff spot all year long.

6) LOS ANGELES DODGERS
Strengths: Very strong starting pitching, great bullpen, great bench, nine quality bats in the lineup
Weaknesses: Lack of power hitters/difference makers in the lineup, age concerns throughout the lineup as well
Analysis: We didn't get to an NL team until 6th on the list and to be honest, I am not sure the Dodgers are the best team in the league, but it came out this way. I think it's a tossup with the top three teams in the NL, but I am willing to go with the Dodgers due to their pitching. Plus their lineup is solid, they just really need one more big bat. Despite that, they should still win the NL West.

7) NEW YORK METS
Strengths: The best lineup in the league, a strong bullpen, solid defense, veteran leadership
Weaknesses: Age concerns at the top of the rotation, young/unproven arms at the back of the rotation, a completely different bullpen than they expected a month ago
Analysis: All winter you heard me say I was concerned about the Mets starting pitching, but now that the season is upon us, I am honestly not that worried. Obviously there is no Pedro Martinez, but the back end of the rotation still looks a lot stronger today than it did at this time one year ago. The only real worry to be is El Duque, but I expect big things from Maine, Perez and Pelfrey. Plus the fact that no one else in the NL has even close to as good of a lineup as the Mets means they should once again be celebrating a division championship.

8) CHICAGO CUBS
Strengths: Very strong lineup, pretty deep bullpen, very deep bench, rotation loaded with power pitchers, Lou Piniella
Weaknesses: Soriano's adjustment to center field, the ongoing saga of Mark Prior and Kerry Wood, volatile closer
Analysis: No one is really sure what to expect from the Cubs just because they were so bad last year and because history is not really on their side. They brought in Lou Piniella and that should pay dividends right away. Mark Prior is hurt again and that does take away from what could have potentially been a great rotation, but it should still be pretty solid with Lilly and Hill behind Zambrano. They are obviously a much, much better team while the Cardinals are a much worse team and the Astros are about the same at best. It may be a stretch, but I really can't see any team in this division beating the Cubs at this point.

9) CHICAGO WHITE SOX
Strengths: Deep starting pitching, much improved bullpen, good platoon situations
Weaknesses: Few strikeout pitchers in the rotation, injury concerns with some of their older players, Juan Uribe criminal distractions
Analysis: The White Sox lineup is just as good as it was a year ago, but the rotation is clearly worse, no matter how well John Danks does. They need a big comeback year from Buehrle and health from Contreras. They also can't afford Thome or Dye to take a step back. They will still be a very good baseball team, but they are in the toughest division in baseball and right now I can't see them finishing higher than 3rd.

10) PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES
Strengths: Very deep rotation, two of the game's premier young hitters, improved offense at 3B and C
Weaknesses: A questionable bullpen including closer, catcher/third baseman/right fielder all never really played a full season as a starter, potentially shallow bench
Analysis: The Phillies are absolutely an improved team from a year ago and there is no way the Mets will run away with the division again. In fact they may not even win it because Philly's starting pitching is so strong. I still think the Mets have a big edge with their lineup and bullpen and that will be enough the hold the Phillies off, but if this club doesn't make the playoffs this year, Charlie Manuel will and should be gone.

11) SAN DIEGO PADRES
Strengths: Excellent starting pitching, the league's best bullpen, one of the deepest benches in the game, solid defense
Weaknesses: What could be a poor lineup/offense, lack of a true cleanup or number five hitter
Analysis: Many people think the Padres lineup is just too weak for them to be competitive, but I disagree. The Pads have solid hitting all the way through their lineup, the problem is that they have four of five 6th place hitters and no real cleanup guy. They definitely could use an extra bat, but their rotation and bullpen should keep them in the game until they get one. In the end I don't know if they can beat out the Dodgers who can match them in pitching and have an edge in hitting, but these two teams should battle for the division all season long.

12) TORONTO BLUE JAYS
Strengths: Great 1-2 pitching combo, very strong lineup from 1-6, hitters who can hit for power and get on base
Weaknesses: Potentially weak bottom half of the rotation, very weak lineup from 7-9, mediocre bench at best, Frank Thomas' health
Analysis: The Blue Jays made a huge leap last season after their winter spending spree. This season they didn't need to do as much to improve but still came up short in making this club better. Sure they signed Frank Thomas, but who knows if he can possibly repeat his performance from last season. And as good as Halladay and Burnett can be at the top of the rotation, the bottom three of Chacin, Ohka and Towers leave a lot to be desired. They should still score runs with the strong top six hitters they have, but they will also play themselves out of a lot of rallies with Zaun, Adams and Clayton at the bottom of the lineup. They should compete with the Sox and the Yanks again, but this season I don't ultimately see them beating out either one.

13) MINNESOTA TWINS
Strengths: The game's best pitcher, two of the game's best young hitters, the best bullpen in baseball
Weaknesses: After Johan the pitchers may be a mess, too many weak hitters in the lineup, a bunch of injury concerns both in the lineup and rotation
Analysis: The Twins are one of the hardest teams to rank because they always do well and they feature the best pitcher in the game and two of the game's brightest young stars in Morneau and Mauer. The problem is that they are in the most competitive division in baseball and Johan can't pitch every game for them. After Johan, the combination of Boof Bonser, Ramon Ortiz, Sidney Ponson and Carlos Silva is hard to stomach. Sure they have some good young arms waiting in the wings, but they still need another starter or two to fill the Brad Radke role, a veteran who can eat up innings. Plus as good as Mauer, Morneau and even Cuddyer are, Punto, Bartlett and possibly Rondell White are equally as bad. I wish I could pick the Twins higher, but I just can't, not in their division, but still look for them to win 85 games.

14) ATLANTA BRAVES
Strengths: Bobby Cox, Bobby Cox, Bobby Cox, one of baseball's best bullpens
Weaknesses: Shallow starting pitching, a weak bench, a lot of question marks on offense
Analysis: The Braves looked a lot better a month ago with Mike Hampton penciled into their rotation, although that really shouldn't affect matters too much as it now appears he will be back by May. The real question with the Braves is how young players like Kelly Johnson and Scott Thorman adjust to playing everyday. This lineup could either be really good or really bad, but its more likely it will fall somewhere in the middle. However, at the end of the day they still have the greatest manager of all-time in the dugout, so they always get the benefit of the doubt with me.

15) HOUSTON ASTROS
Strengths: Extremely deep bench, improved offense, strong bullpen
Weaknesses: Questionable 4th and 5th starters, Brad Lidge's psyche, too many streaky hitters in the lineup
Analysis: The Astros should be a good team this season, but the jury is still out on just how good. One big reason for that is no one can really be sure how the rotation will shake out. They lost two huge pitchers in Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens, but Jason Jennings and Woody Williams could be adequate replacements. However, even if the pitching is much worse, the feeling is that the offense will be much better thanks to the addition of Carlos Lee. There are a lot of question marks on this team, but I still like them to have good shot at winning the division.

16) OAKLAND A'S Offense is not good and starting pitching is the worse it has been in over a decade.

17) ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS Solid rotation and some great young talent, but they are still probably a year away from true contention.

18) ST. LOUIS CARDINALS Defending champs just lost too much. Their pitching is worse, their offense is worse, plus they have too many injury concerns to count.

19) BALTIMORE ORIOLES Their lineup is solid 1-9 and if Bedard and Cabrera finally live up to potential they could be the surprise of the season. Sadly they still can't finish higher than 4th.

20) MILWAUKEE BREWERS Could this finally be the year the Brewers make their move? Possibly, but most likely it will take another season, but watch for big years from Prince Fielder and Rickie Weeks.

21) SEATTLE MARINERS The team I have been touting as my surprise team all winter only comes in at 21? Yeah I was surprised to, but I just couldn't rank them higher, their bullpen and bench is just too unproven. They will finish third, but they will also be in competition for a playoff spot into September.

22) SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS As always the success of this team will depend on Barry Bonds. He could carry them to the division title or he could lead them to the basement. Due to the age of the lineup and the question about the back end of the rotation, I would bet on the latter.

23) COLORADO ROCKIES It pained me to rank them this low because their lineup is just so good, but you can't win without pitching, and although theirs is improving, it's still not there yet. 2008 may be the year of the Rockies though.

24) FLORIDA MARLINS How anyone could rank this club higher than 4th in the NL East is beyond me. Maybe with Josh Johnson on board, but with him out until at least June, this club doesn't have the arms or the bats to hang in with the Mets, Phillies and Braves.

25) CINCINNATI REDS All signs point to last year being a fluke for the Reds. Harang and Arroyo are the real deal, but its hard to compete when your other three starters don't really belong in the Major Leagues.

26) TEXAS RANGERS The Rangers improved their pitching a bit this winter, but they just lost too much offense for them to have a chance this year. That is unless Sammy Sosa puts up 60 HR and 150 RBI. A wise man once said "never say never" and of course I am referring to the Immortal Hulk Hogan during his Hall of Fame speech.

27) TAMPA BAY DEVIL RAYS Here is another team that should be greatly improved, but that is still at least a year away. They have the potential to put one of the best lineups in baseball out there, although a lot has to break right for that to happen. They also have the framework for probably the best rotation they have ever had with Kazmir and Shields, despite all that, they will still finish last.

28) PITTSBURGH PIRATES Just when it looked like the Buccos might break out and start moving up, they fall right back down again. The addition of Adam LaRoche is a good one, but they still have too many holes in their lineup and need too much improvement from their pitchers to have any chance.

29) KANSAS CITY ROYALS If anyone in the world is happy about the current state of the Nationals, it has to be the K.C. Royals, who for the first time in a few years get bumped up from last in the rankings. The Royals will definitely be an improved club this season, both on the mound and in the batter's box, but it won't make much of a difference in the loaded AL Central.

30) WASHINGTON NATIONALS I have been saying all winter that the Nationals are going to be epically bad. This team has the potential to be a disaster of biblical proportions. While they have managed to piece together some things this spring and no longer look like a lock to lose 120+ games, they will still absolutely be the worst team in baseball and one of the worst of the last few decades.

There you have it, that's all for my rankings, but fear not, there are a lot more prognostications and predictions to come, so let's get to them ASAP………..

BATTING THIRD…………..

Now it's time for the full predictions, I don't want to waste a minute, so let's jump right in.

Ok, that will do it for predictions. I was planning to include predictions for the All-Star Game rosters as well, but space does just not allow this week. I will however include those predictions next week when there will be less to talk about and they will still be just as much fun. So that will wrap up our 2007 MLB Preview but still one section to go, let's now switch topics to the other big event this weekend…………

CLEANING UP

I hate to leave the baseball theme with this being the full MLB Preview and all, but I feel I have no choice. That is because in addition to this weekend being opening day it also includes the greatest wrestling day of the year, Wrestlemania. Last week I wrote a rant about steroids in wrestling just because it was on the top of my mind and there was little baseball news to cover. I fully expected my column to get buried since there was little baseball value in it. Instead what I got was more feedback than I had ever received in the life of this column. I get so caught up in the sports zone most of the time that I always forget that 411mania.com is at heart, a wrestling website. Ashish has done a phenomenal job building up the site over the years and it has now become the place to be for sports, politics, movies, music and any number of countless other subjects. But still, as I said, at heart, this site is and always will be the premier wrestling website on the internet. With that being said, I just couldn't ignore the granddaddy of them all, the biggest wrestling show of the year, Wrestlemania 23. The card looks to be pretty good on paper this year and I am looking forward to the show, but of course like any other sport, on paper doesn't always translate to success.

Of course I am not here to break down the card or make predictions or anything like that, there are plenty of 411 wrestling writers to do that for you. I am however going to provide a very special installment of "The Greatest" this week with a Wrestlemania theme. And before any of you members of the IWC want to attack and demean my list, remember that I have been watching wrestling longer than some of you have been alive. Not to sound like some bitter old timer, because I am far from that, but I have been watching wrestling since the days of Rock ‘N Wrestling and am sometimes appalled at the lack of understanding/acknowledgement of the 80's era of wrestling by some of today's younger fans. (Note: This of course does not apply to any 411mania wrestling zone writers, well at least not the majority of them, because for the most part regardless of age they are all very well versed in both wrestling past and present). For an example of this lack of acknowledgment of 80's wrestling you have to look no further than wwe.com's Mania Madness tournament (this was a play on the NCAA tournament where they took the top 64 Wrestlemania moments and allowed people to vote on them matchup style until only one remained). In this tourney almost every single moment that took place prior to Wrestlemania X was eliminated in the first round, including Randy Savage reuniting with Miss Elizabeth at Wrestlemania VII and the Ricky Steamboat/Randy Savage match from Wrestlemania III which somehow lost to the Cena/Triple H match from last year. Just an absolute joke.

So here now, from a guy that has watched all but three of the previous 22 Wrestlemania's live (Wrestlemania I, XIII or XIV were the ones I missed), including seeing IV and V in person, I present………………

"The 10 Greatest"…………………..Wrestlemania's of All-Time

10) Tie: Wrestlemania VI (Hulk Hogan vs. Ultimate Warrior) and Wrestlemania X-8 (Hollywood Hogan vs. The Rock)
09) Wrestlemania XIX (Hulk Hogan vs. Vince McMahon, The Rock vs. Stone Cold III, Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho, Brock Lesnar vs. Kurt Angle, Roddy Piper returns)
08) Wrestlemania XXII (Edge vs. Mick Foley, Money in the Bank Ladder Match II, Shawn Michaels vs. Vince McMahon, Trish Stratus vs. Mickie James,
07) Wrestlemania VIII (Bret Hart vs. Roddy Piper, Randy Savage vs. Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan vs. Sid Justice/Ultimate Warrior's return)
06) Wrestlemania XX (Chris Benoit vs. Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H, Eddie Guerrero vs. Kurt Angle, Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar, Evolution vs. Rock ‘n Sock Connection)
05) Wrestlemania 2000 (Hardy Boyz vs. Dudley Boyz vs. Edge & Christian/ladder match, Chris Benoit vs. Kurt Angle vs. Chris Jericho, Triple H vs. The Rock vs. Mick Foley vs. Big Show/McMahon in each corner)
04) Wrestlemania X (Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart, Razor Ramon vs. Shawn Michaels/ladder match, Bret Hart vs. Yokozuna, return of Roddy Piper and Mr. Perfect)
03) Wrestlemania XXI (Money in the Bank Ladder Match, Kurt Angle vs. Shawn Michaels, Undertaker vs. Randy Orton, Batista vs. Triple H, Piper's Pit with Stone Cold, Hulk Hogan returns)
02) Wrestlemania III (Andre the Giant vs. Hulk Hogan, Ricky Steamboat vs. Randy Savage, Roddy Piper vs. Adrian Adonis, 93,000 people, the biggest wrestling show in the history of the business)
01) Wrestlemania X-7 (The Rock vs. Stone Cold II, Undertaker vs. Triple H, Shane McMahon vs. Vince McMahon, Edge & Christian vs. Dudley Boyz vs Hardy Boyz/TLC II, Kurt Angle vs. Chris Benoit , Gimmick Battle Royal)

For more on Wrestlemania check out the 411 Wrestling Zone. I particularly enjoyed this column: The Top Ten
by Julian Williams featuring the top 23 Wrestlemania matches of all-time. He did a great job of recognizing all eras of Wrestlemania and I really can't think of a match that he missed that should have been included on the list.

Ok that will do it for me this week, I will be back next week with a first week of the season edition of "Curveballs and Sliders" were we will take a look at anything interesting that might have happened in the seasons first few days. See ya then, and of course, until then………………………………..
