The Sports Kid Rankings 1.16.08: NBA Week 12
Posted by Ken Schmidt on 01.16.2008

It seems to be getting rarer and rarer these days but finally in the NBA my predictions are coming to fruition, atleast temporarily (ignoring my preaching of the Spurs being the best in the NBA). The Celtics have dropped two in a row to a bad team and dropped out of the top spot in the rankings (sorry about the spoiler). Why did they drop two straight to the Wizards, especially a Gilbert Arenas-less Wiz squad? Well first of all when two out of three of the stars don't shine there is no plan B, minus the 1 out of 1000 great game by Big Baby Davis we saw against the Pistons. Ray Allen has been struggling from the field, and even though he is the best outside shooting small forward in the game, all 3-point shooting forwards are streaky. With him shooting under 30 percent from the field on 27 shots, you can't expect the Celts to put up big points. Also, when KG doesn't score 20+ they just aren't the same team. We saw what happens when the Truth leads the team last year, they struggle. KG is the heart and soul of the team. Than there is the factor I called would be the downfall of the rebuilt team. When making big trades and bringing in big scorers the Celtics forgot one key aspect, the point guard? Honestly, is there anyone out there that thinks you can put Rajon Rondo at the point and call yourself contenders for the NBA Championship? I sure don't. The guy is up and down like Britney's Speares' sanity, which is mostly down. The Wizards played solid defense against the Celtics and that was all she wrote for these games. This is why I believe the Pistons are the better team, especially head to head. Solid defense in shutting down Paul Pierce and not letting KG dominant the paint (mainly two good defenders like Butler and Jamison) will make the Celtics need to rely on jump shooters like Allen and Rondo. The SuperSonics will tell you from their terrible season last year that relying on jump shooters does not win games, Ray Allen can't shoot like Jesus Christ heaving up treys every night. Now let's see if other teams realize this and start to game plan for the Celts like the Wiz did.

On a second edition to my lead I would like to congratulate the T'Wolves this week. The dream of being the 30 spot all season long is over. I am disappointed but atleast now you will have to read to the end to see who is last instead of just assuming it is Minnesota. Dan Owen should be happy.

Climber of the Week Lakers +6
Diver of the Week Magic -5

Ranking (previous) Team Commentary Record
1 (5)
The Mavs had the longest winning streak in the NBA with 7 straight wins before dropping one to the Kings Monday night in ugly fashion. We all know the Mavs are generally a lock to blow it in the playoffs but as of right now they are the best team in the NBA right now. The loss to the Kings proved though that any team that shoots the ball decent against them has a shot. 26-12
2 (8)
I am still not willing to give the Lakers the top spot even though they have a 7 game win streak because during that win streak they only beat one good team, the Hornets. I am not impressed by stringing together 7 wins against the Sixers, Grizzlies, Sonics, and Bucks. The real test for them is right now as they play the Suns on Thursday and will be without their best big man, Bynum, for eight weeks. 26-11
3 (4)
The Suns are always one of the best teams in the West because when they play their game, they are unbeatable. I have said it many times but this is the last shot for Phoenix before they have to ship off Marion or Amare and start over without them. With Grant Hill out (what a shocker) it might be easier said than done. 26-11
4 (1)
Following two losses to the Wizards the Celtics have their lowest ranking of the season at 4 right now. They still have the best record but man, their division absolutely sucks, so I am penalizing them. A game I am very excited to watch this week is Portland/Boston on Wednesday night, if the Celtics drop another I will officially stop believing they are a championship contender. 30-6
5 (2)
Another team with their worst showing of the season, the Spurs are starting to gain some momentum again, even if it was a few wins against bad teams. Whatever, it takes to get back on track is necessary and this week should be more to build on for the Spurs. 25-11
6 (3)
The Pistons continue to disappoint me. What the hell happened Sunday night? They lost to the Knicks 89-65! When I saw that final score I was sure somebody spiked my soda at work with PCP, crack, and cough syrup. My favorite quote of the year is from Chauncey Billups who said he showered for hours after the game to get the feeling of scoring 65 points to the Knicks off his body. I am calling a mulligan on that game. 28-10
7 (9)
The Hornets are playing steady right now and are actually just one game back of the Western Conference lead. They just can't seem to beat the top teams though as they got crushed by the Lakers this week. Don't be surprised to see them move up a few spots next week after 3 straight against the Sonics, Bobcats, and Bucks all at home. That should be 3 freebies. 25-12
8 (10)
Those Blazers continue to be that pesky surprise team that proves a problem for even the best in the NBA. Could they continue to be awesome spoilers and end the Lakers big win streak? I am routing for them, you have to love an underdog. 23-14
9 (6)
They just aren't one of the elite in the West right now. Even though they are a lock to win a division it still doesn't guarantee a home playoff matchup, which should be a one and done in the playoffs for A.I. and Melo. 22-14
10 (12)
My boys from Utah continue to climb back into a race with the Nuggets. The Jazz have put down 4 straight Ws to get the same win total as the Nugs with 3 more games played. It is still a long way to finish line so I might just bank my money on the better defensive squad, which is the Jazz. 22-17
11 (11)
Talk about being stuck in limbo, the Warriors are a solid team but still are missing so many big pieces to contend in the West. Their big men were incredible last year but now are just mediocre foreigners in the post. 22-16
12 (7)
I think I am done believing in the Magic until they prove otherwise. Ever since I preached them for beating the Celtics many weeks ago they have been in a continuous slide. I think if they were in the West they would miss the playoffs. 23-16
13 (14)
Although the Wiz won two big ones against the Celtics I still can't rank them over any of the top teams in the West. 20-16
14 (13)
I would still be concerned about the Rockets because they are playing good basketball. They could be this years Warriors, because with the right matchups, they could beat some of the top teams in the West. They need to make the playoffs first though, which as of now, they wouldn't be in. 20-18
15 (17)
Don't look now but those Raptors are climbing up the standings in the East. Than again anytime you win three straight in the East it could jump you from the bottom to the middle of the pack. I still don't believe there are any contenders on the East Coast not named the Pistons or the Celtics. 20-17
16 (16)
I think it is funny that after the Rockets at 14 there is going to be a string of horribly mediocre Eastern Conference teams. The Eastern Confernence: Where Mediocrity is excellence. 19-18
17 (15)
After a nice climb last week the Nets drop to below the .500 mark, yet still are almost a lock to make the playoffs. The Eastern Confernence: Where Mediocrity is excellence. 18-19
18 (18)
I don't mean to sound like a broken record but the Hawks are a really bad team and would still be the eighth seed in the East. It is embarrassing how bad one conference is compared to the other and I don't see that ever changing. 16-17
19 (22)
The Kings are in a bad spot right now. There best players are returning from injury and Frankie Garcia is starting to be a solid small forward in this league, a future Peja Jr. The Kings are going to finish in the middle of the pack and not get a good draft choice, leaving them still as a bad team of decent jump shooters. They need a big man, and not one that plays 1 out of 4 games every season. 15-21
20 (19)
The Pacers, another team with a serious chance of making the playoffs but no real prayer of finishing at .500. Repetition is the key to comedy, The Eastern Confernence: Where Mediocrity is excellence. 17-22
21 (20)
Just when I thought the Bulls were making a push to get back into the Eastern Conference they drop games to the Knicks and Hawks. Another team that came into the season with high hopes and will end the season hoping for a good pick in the lottery. 14-20
22 (23)
I can't wait to see the Bucks draft another soft big man with their lottery pick that does nothing to help out a solid back court. 15-23
23 (25)
Gerald Wallace continues be the most overrated player in the NBA because he always puts up huge fantasy stats. However, that is because he is the only halfway decent player in Charlotte right now. It is like Ronnie Brown being a first round fantasy pick in the football. Sure he isn't one of the top 10 players but he is all his team has which means plenty of touches and plenty of numbers with very little team success. 14-23
24 (24)
The Clips are back to the Clips of old, the team in L.A. people try to pretend don't exist.10-23
25 (21)
I consider myself a true Sixers fan because I cheer against them every night. They won't go anywhere for awhile so we might as well build up on some young talent. I already love Thaddeus Young, Jason Smith, and Lou Williams. 14-24
26 (29)
I am actually cheering for the Knicks the rest of the season so they finish above the 76ers. I am that fickle right now.10-26
27 (26)
Another week of just misses for the best worst team in the NBA. They lose to some of the best teams by a point or two week in and week out but they are still losses. 10-27
28 (27)
The Sonics are very inconsistent and really need to bring in some scorers this offseason. With Gilbert Arenas becoming a free agent at the end of the season I think he would be a great fit in Seattle. Him and Durant could be the next Kidd/Carter. 9-28
29 (30)
The streak is over! After 11 weeks in the 30 hole the T'Wolves climb out even though they have only 5 wins all season. However, they after lost 10 straight like another team. 5-31
30 (28)
Shame on the Heat right now. 10 straight losses? Anyone who understands this is a liar. They are the Heat for God's sake! 8-28

"With Gilbert Arenas becoming a free agent at the end of the season I think he would be a great fit in Seattle. Him and Durant could be the next Kidd/Carter."

That tandem isn't even good. Vince Carter is overrated, Jason Kidd is old, and the Nets suck. I'm not sure why you would want to compare Durant + Arenas to an overrated tandem that doesn't produce very many wins.

It's also funny how you speak of the West's dominance, but in the past four years, the East and West have split 2-2. I agree the West is better than the East, but it isn't this huge gap that you are trying to create.

"I don't mean to sound like a broken record but the Hawks are a really bad team." If you are going to call the Hawks a bad team, at least explain why. The Hawks are an up and coming team who is going to be a top 3 team in 2-3 years. They have great young talent in Horford and Marvin Williams, Johnson and Smith are becoming stars, and Childress is blossoming into a great sixth man ala Ginobli and Barbosa.

I like reading power rankings, but a lot of your analysis is just off.

So you are trying to tell me that you don't think atleast the top 10 teams in the West wouldn't be in third place in the East? Because I think every team in the West down to the Rockets would be towards the top of the East, that is a huge gap in talent. THe Hawks are up and coming but they are still a ways off of being a good team. Horford needs to work on his low post moves so he scores and isnt just a rebounder, so he can be better than just a Reggie Evans type player which would be bad. Smith is good but they still don't have that number 1 scorer they need because Joe Johnson should be a 2 option at best but he is the 1 there. The Hawks will still be a while and I doubt it will be behind stars like Childress and Marvin Williams. FInally, Kidd and Carter were an awesome combo when they started out. Don;'t tell me Jason Kidd is 'old' as a negative is moronic. If Jason Kidd plays like he does now when he is 70 years old I will take him. I couldn't think of a good tandem to compare them to because no player plays like Durant, a tall man who shoots 3 with precision. If you think the Hawks will be good in 2 years than I shouldn't take your criticism seriously but I have an hour before my next class so i thought id drop you this lengthy message.

The Hawks are on the verge of becoming a consistent playoff team. Lets say, for the sake of argument, they make the playoffs this year. Then they take their first round loss a superior team (like I expect that they will.) That is one year of playoff experience under their belt. I see no reason, especially with how bad you say the East is, for them not to be mainstays in the playoff picture. The team is only going to get better with experience. Also, I see no reason why Joe Johnson cannot be a first option in this league. You don't know if someone can be a first option in this league until they are given the chance. Washington gave Gilbert Arenas the chance to be a first option and look what he did with it! As players get better around Joe Johnson, it will be easier for him to become the first option because the other players will be legit threats. Josh Smith is a Shawn Marion type player. He is only 21 years old and if he ever learns how to shoot, he is going to be dangerous. Marvin Williams is developing into a nice SF in this league. I do not have a comparison for him, but I have watched a few Hawks games and I see why they drafted him so highly (though it was the incorrect choice.) Josh Childress is becoming a very good sixth man. I compared him to Barbosa and Ginobli because I believe he can play to their level. Al Horford clearly needs some work, but it is his first year in the league. Give him two more seasons to establish himself and a low post game.

Let it be known that I am from Cleveland. I am not a Hawks fan in any way. I recognize talent when I see it. They are building a nice youth core there, that just needs a point guard to be a complete threat (AC Law may be the answer for that.) I will address the Jason Kidd subject later tonight. I have a class to attend (college sucks!)
