Sports Kid Rankings 3.12.08: NBA Week 20
Posted by Ken Schmidt on 03.12.2008

Just when I was ready to put a nail in the Suns coffin, I find myself sitting in front of the T.V. on Sunday afternoon watching the Spurs/Suns game thinking I could easily predict the end result. Well I was wrong because Shaq looked dominate again. The Suns brought him in for just this reason, to handle the Spurs. He recorded a nice double double and was part of the reason the Suns actually won a game without having to score 100+ points, a rarity in for them. Watch out for the Suns I don't think they could beat a team like the Hornets or Lakers, who run the floor well, but teams like the Rockets and the Spurs are a good match up for them. Now let's get to a new number one!

Climber of the Week Bobcats +6
Diver of the Week Pacers -5

Ranking (previous) Team Commentary Record
1 (3)
Can we pretend I never went through that two months of doubting the Rockets because in the beginning of the season I said they were a team that could be in the top of the NBA and now they finally are. Just think of it as Saint Peter, he denied knowing Jesus three times but he still got to be the first pope, what I did wasn't nearly that bad so don't hate on me for getting back on the Rockets atop the league wagon. Mark your calendars for this Sunday when the Rockets host the Lakers.40-23
2 (2)
Well the Spurs overall had a solid week minus the loss to the Suns which was a hard fought game the whole way. They got right back on track against the Nuggets the next night and remain in their two spot. 44-19
3 (1)
The Lakers sure did look bad in a loss to the Kings Sunday night. In a heated West where battling for home court advantage means so much losing one game can be so crucial in the long run. The Lakers can't let that happen especially when they play four straight western conference playoff teams this week. I expect the Lakers to drop down the standings this week with an absolute minefield of games coming up. 39-9
4 (6)
The Hornets are quietly just a game and a half back of the Spurs and Lakers for that top spot in the West. Chris Paul looked great in the fall to the mighty Rockets and has been an MVP candidate the entire season in what has been called a two-man MVP race. Don't sleep on the Hornets as they have a chance to make some big noise this week playing the number one and number two team teams at home before traveling to Detroit. They may fall hard like the Lakers or they can officially state their names as championship contenders with three wins. 42-20
5 (5)
Advantage Celtics right now as they beat the Pistons this week and than picked up win number 50 Monday night with a 100-86 win over the Sixers. They are on a 9 game winning streak right now and the big 3 is firing on all cylinders. Looks like that 1 spot in the East is close to locked up. 50-12
6 (7)
Sure Chris Paul is an MVP this year but don't forget about bizzaro Paul, Derron Williams. Williams is just as good as Chris Paul, he just has other guys on his team stealing the spotlight. Let's not forget about this team because Williams truly can take over a game, case and point being a 25 point, 20 assist performance. That's insane. 42-22
7 (10)
The Suns move up three spots just for just one meaningful win, but it was a big one. They maintain the six seed which is key right now because you can't expect to go to the finals playing the Lakers and Spurs in the first round, not that playing the Rockets would be a good thing. Maybe Sunday was the Suns ‘click' game. Let's see where they go from here. 41-22
8 (4)
What happens to Detroit, they go through runs of such poor play this season and even though they have been winning this is one of them. They were a top 5 team for so long and they couldn't dominate teams like the Clippers or the Knicks and didn't look like the were in the same league as the Celtics. It is time to turn things around because they won't make the finals playing like this. 46-17
9 (9)
The Mavs have been awfully quiet since the J-Kidd hubbub has died down. They are still locked into that 7 spot in the West which is not good enough right now because they won't hang with the Lakers. They need to pick up some steam right now which should happen with the rest of the West beating each other up and the Mavs getting the Bobcats, Pacers, and Heat. 41-23
10 (10)
The Warriors got red hot enough and still couldn't make a push out of the final playoff spot in the West, even with that being said they are still just 4.5 games out of the top spot in the West so they need to remain hot and hope for help because anything can happen in the West. 39-23
11 (13)
The Cavs climb two spots because for the first time this season I think they have a shot to make the finals again. With the Pistons being weak all they need to do his make it to the championship and hope the Celtics old age catches up with them. It could happen. Plus LeBron is good for a nightly triple double. 37-27
12 (12)
The Cavs finally get above the Magic because of Monday night. Hedo Turkoglu's triple-double seemed like a career feat while LeBron's was just another game for him. 41-24
13 (11)
The Nuggets are officially dead in the water, even if they are just 3 games out of the playoffs. A.I. is hurt and they have become a team the rest of the West can beat up on, a fate similar to the Blazers before they dropped into obscurity. 37-26
14 (14)
The Raptors have been at 14 for about forever. Next week if they don't make a push to climb up the standings I am going to drop for the reason that being on the treadmill in the NBA is not ok. 34-28
15 (16)
The Sixers have become a serious threat in the East to play spoiler for some of the top playoff teams. They have been dominating the bad teams, squeaking by some of the better teams, and if they didn't sleep walk through the first quarter of the Celtics game, it would have been close. They showed a lot of heart to go down 15-0 and continue to play hard and lose by 14. Think about it, if it wasn't for the hot start of the game, the Sixers won by 1. Thaddeus Young has been head and shoulders more than what we expected him to be his rookie year here in Philly. 30-34
16 (17)
The Trailblazers have fallen off the map to me as I don't even remember any of their games this week and I follow the NBA every night on a minute-to-minute basis. I had to look up their team schedule to remember that they inched out the Knicks in OT and beat the Bucks behind a game-winning Aldridge start. Two wins this week? Not to bad. 33-31
17 (18)
The Kings showed they have the talent to be a good spoiler, like they did against the Lakers Sunday night. I expected the tough week to kill the Kings and send them into the bottom 10 but they surprised me. 28-35
18 (15)
The Wizards are looking in their rearview mirror and need to be ready to drop into the 7 or 8 hole where they will have to play the Pistons or Celtics in the first round where they stand no chance. 30-32
19 (20)
The Hawks are back in the playoffs as of right now which needs to be their end of the season goal, be a first round exit, better than the preseason expectations for this team. It is going to go down to the wire between the Nets, Bulls, and Hawks for the last spot but the Hawks have the advantage right now. 26-37
20 (19)
The Nets have to keep working hard because they are just a .5 a game out of the playoffs and they need to prove to Vince Carter they can compete with Devon Harris and Marcus Williams if they want to keep him this offseason. 26-38
21 (22)
The Bulls are quietly right there for the playoff hunt just a game back of the last spot in the East. They have looked like a nice little team since the trade and their young players are back and making it happen, including rookie Joakim Noah. 25-38
22 (28)
Don't look now but the Bobcats have won 5 straight games, that's right 5! This winning streak is in just enough to top to push them out of a top 5 draft pick and make them suck another year when they get another mediocre player in the draft. 24-39
23 (27)
Hey the Clippers are doing the same thing as the Bobcats, another team that can't just lose games to get ping-pong balls, how stubborn to want to win. 21-41
24 (24)
Two straight wins for the T-Wolves and they are still in a great spot right now, a good team with a terrible record who should get a top 3 draft pick in the off-season. 14-48
25 (23)
The Bucks are pretty bad right now as they are yet to find their niche on whether to be a grinding team or a shooting team. Some nights it looks like a group of solid grinders when Bogut and Villanueva are scoring and rebounding but others those two are kept off the score sheet and you see Mo Williams be the star. 23-40
26 (21)
A three game losing streak has the Pacers pretty much dead in the playoff hunt.24-39
27 (29)
They may be getting blown out by teams but atleast they won a game this week when they topped the Nets. This is one more win than the bottom 3 of the NBA. 15-47
28 (25)
4 straight losses. 16-47
29 (30)
5 straight losses. 13-37
30 (30)
And the Knicks are back in the bottom spot with 7 straight losses. 18-46

Your a weird guy, man. Are you kidding me? The Celtics at number 5? They have the best record in the NBA and are playing the best basketball right now and you've got them at number 5? They've beaten most of those top four teams you've got listed if not all of them. I could understand putting the Rockets at number two behind the Celtics, but number 5 doesn't make any sense. Do you not like the Celtics or something?
