411's NFL Power Rankings 10.17.07: Week 6
Posted by Don M. Dumas on 10.17.2007

Week 6 is in the books, and the Patriots and the Colts are the only undefeated teams left. But, I want to talk about a different team.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are 4-1 and are playing great football. They can run, play defense, and don't turn the ball over very much (other than the 3 turnovers against Houston, but they won anyway).

When they dumped QB Byron Leftwich and chose to go with David Garrard, many people thought is was a mistake, myself included. But the way this team is playing right now, I think it is safe to start mentioning them with the Pittsburgh Steelers and others who are playing catch-up to the Pats and Colts in the AFC.

Like I said before, I'm partial to defense and a strong running game. Well, the Jaguars rank second in points allowed (11.6) defensively, and fourth in offensive rushing yards (154.8).

Not only that, Garrard's passer rating is 104.7. Hey, it's easy to say the New England Patriots and the Indianpolis Colts are playing well, but I want to give recognition to a team that's flying below the radar.

Dare I say, they might have a chance to beat one of the Big Two teams in the playoffs. Only time will tell. But they certainly have a recipe for a championship.

1The Colts had a bye week, and some will say that the Pats did enough in their drubbing of the Cowboys to earn the number 1 spot. Sorry, not yet.previous rank: 1
2New England did look impressive, jumping on the ‘Boys early, then losing their lead, only to get it right back in the blink of an eye. Sure, that touchdown at the end was unnecessary, but even when they try to just run out the clock they score touchdowns. As I said last week, QB Tom Brady is the MVP of the league, all other need not apply.previous rank: 2
3Going to Denver next week will be a good test. Denver will be playing their guts out, trying to avenge the whooping they took at home by San Diego in Week 5. With Denver playing so lousy against the run, look for "Fast" Willie Parker to have a big day.previous rank: 4
4The Jaguars turned the ball over three times, gave up 390 total yards, and won by 20 points. Can you imagine how good they could be if they the ball to Maurice Jones-Drew twenty times per game? Scary. If the Colts slip, this team can win the division.previous rank: 5
5I'm not going to drop the Cowboys too far. It was the Patriots that beat them, after all. But, I will note that QB Tony Romo has thrown 6 INTs in his last two games. I wonder when we'll start hearing the "Good Romo, Bad Romo" comments?.previous rank: 3
6That was an impressive performance against a good Redskin team. The defense proved that QB Brett Favre isn't the only player on the team, and it might be time we recognize them as one of the premier units in the NFL.previous rank: 7
7I realize their offense wasn't spectacular with Steve McNair under center, but it just anemic with Kyle Boller at QB. But, with the defense always putting them in good field position and kicker Matt Stover connecting on 18 of 21 field goals so far, who needs an offense?previous rank: 8
8Yes, I realize it was the Falcons that they beat, but do you realize that the Giants have won four straight? Say what you will, but that is impressive in today's NFL. Now if only that defense could play consistently…previous rank: 11
9So Vinny Testaverde is the answer! Wow, the old man can still play. It shouldn't take much for his to hand the ball off to their backfield tandem anyway. The defense is playing well, too, causing 5 turnovers against the Cardinals.previous rank: 13
10You have to wonder how their game against Tampa Bay would have turned out if QB Vince Young would have stayed healthy. Still, it is a team game and if Young misses any significant time, this will not be a very good team.previous rank: 6
11I was reluctant to say that this team was back on track, but after their handling of the Raiders I am starting to believe. RB LaDainian Tomlinson certainly seems back on track, scoring all of San Diego's 4 touchdowns. Maybe if he would have played in the preseason he would have done this in Week 2.previous rank: 15
12I'm going to cut Washington some slack. They almost beat beat a very good team on the road, and if Santana Moss could hang on to the football, they would have. Next week against Arizona should be easy.previous rank: 10
13It was close, but they found a way to win. When you think about it, their only losses are to 2 pretty good teams, the Colts and Seahawks. Most of the time, if you beat who you're supposed to, you'll make the playoffs. Let's see how they handle Detroit next week.previous rank: 16
14How Seattle allowed the lowly Saints to come into their house and trample on them is beyond me. Could it be they looked past New Orleans? If so, they better not look past the Rams next week or they might give two teams their first victories in consecutive weeks. I'm not sure, but I doubt that has ever happened before.previous rank: 9
15The Texans fell to 3-3, which is about where they should be. After starting out 2-0, however, we may be witnessing a let down. Running the ball is more about attitude than ability, and they were held to just 60 yards. Time for an adjustment.previous rank: 14
16For the Cardinal's sake, I hope Kurt Warner's injury will not force him to miss any games. Third-stringer Tim Rattay will not get it done. If Warner does miss time, it might be time to dump those Arizona pass-catchers off your fantasy team.previous rank: 12
17I'm not going to lie, this team is fun to watch. They let the ball fly and I like it. They are becoming my guilty pleasure, like when I used to watch Desperate Housewives. Hey, don't judge me.previous rank: 19
18Well, once again the Eagles put up a ‘W' after a bye week. RB Brian Westbrook ran the ball well, and the defense did enough to win despite the injuries to that side of the ball. They should be able to run against Chicago next week, and they don't kick to Devin Hester they should win that game, tooprevious rank: 22
19The Raiders were just plain outmatched against San Diego. They way they handled their possession right before halftime probably did this team in. The Chiefs go to Oakland next week, so we'll see how they bounce back in the division race.previous rank: 17
20The Broncos had a bye week, but I dropped them anyway. When I thought about where to put them, all I could think about was how they got beat down by the Chargers at home. So, for the first time in power rankings, a time gets punished twice for losing just one game. It was that bad.previous rank: 18
21RB Adrian Peterson single-handedly beat the Bears. We all know how well he ran the ball, but his kick return after the Bears tied the game set up the game-winning field goal, too. The defense is better than they played against Chicago, though. They need to step up.previous rank: 27
22It's hard to justify ranking a 3-3 team this low, especially when they won 3 out of their last four. If they can beat Oakland on the road next week, I'll leap frog this team right into the top 15. Maybe.previous rank: 26
23The Lions have their work cut for them against Tampa Bay next week. After that it is a rematch against the Bears, and then at home against Denver. All of the games can be won, but they probably will have to settle for 2 out of 3.previous rank: 23
24The red hot Giants are up next, I expect this team to get beat pretty bad. I don't think their defense can keep New York out of the end zone. But, they should be able to rebound against New Orleans the following week.previous rank: 24
25This team is terrible. Their defense is no longer feared because of injuries and poor tackling, and the offense can't score without Devin Hester touching the ball. RB Cedric Benson is still looking for his breakout game, and Brian Griese makes bad decisions at bad times.previous rank: 21
26Maybe the bye week is just what this team needed to recover from their heartbreaking loss to Dallas. They'll probably need another bye week after the Ravens batter them all over the field, too. previous rank: 25
27The Saints are back! Just kidding. Beating Seattle was nice, though. It will take more than 1 game for this team to climb very high in the rankings. But, this could be the start of something new.previous rank: 30
28What a disappointment. Only the Bears' fall from grace is more so. They can't run, they can't, they can't play defense, and QB Carson Palmer can't stop throwing the ball to the competition. This team will earn a high draft pick in 2008.previous rank: 20
29RB Thomas Jones finally broke lose, but it wasn't enough for the Jets. Chad Pennington is terrible. He looks weak out there. Looks like it takes everything he has just to throw the ball 15 yards. Seriously, I think my arm in stronger.previous rank: 28
30I think this team will actually start winning soon. And by that I mean 2 or 3 games out the remaining 10. Next week they play New Orleans. They might be able to get their second win then. Their third could come against the 49ers in week 9. Then they're just about finished.previous rank: 29
31Seattle will surely thrash the Rams next week. Seemingly, this team can do nothing right. And to think, some people thought this team was going to supplant the Seahawks as NFC West Champs this year. Don't look at me, I didn't say it.previous rank: 31
32The Dolphins put up 31 points! Usually, that would be enough to win, but not against the high-powered Browns, who scored 41. Now, I know the Fins typically play the Pats tough, but I don't think so this time around. Look for Tom Brady to throw 10 touchdowns on them.previous rank: 32
