411's NFL Power Rankings 11.16.07: Week 10
Posted by Don M. Dumas on 11.16.2007

I must open this week's column with an apology. To all the Vikings fans, I am sorry that I jinxed Adrian Peterson.

Last week I mentioned that Adrian Peterson was the Rookie of the Year. I also said that if he didn't get injured, he should be a strong candidate for NFL MVP, too. Well, he got hurt, and it appears he will miss the next couple of games. Sorry ‘bout that.

Now, moving on. I'd like to recognize the hottest player in the NFL right now: San Diego Chargers cornerback Antonio Cromartie.

During the offseason, I wrote an article that was very critical of the Chargers, especially their GM A.J. Smith. I wrote that Smith took too many risks with his draft choices. In the case of Cromartie, however, his gambling had paid off.

Cromartie was San Diego's first round choice in 2006 out of Florida State. The risky part was, he had only started one game in college, and he was coming off of a devastating knee injury. Although San Diego desperately needed help in their secondary, I didn't think this pick made any sense.

Well, lets break down Antonio's performance in the last three games.

In Week 8, against the Houston Texans at Qualcomm Stadium, Antonio Cromartie intercepted two passes, returning one of them 70 yards for a touchdown. He also recovered fumble in the end zone for another score. He scored the entire Houston team that day.

In Week 9, against the Vikings, Cromartie set an NFL record for the longest play by returning a missed field goal 109 yards for a touchdown. The play was spectacular, as Cromartie leaped in the air to catch the ball, and came down in bounds, and showed explosive speed in his dash down the sideline for the score.

In Week 10, against the Indianapolis Colts, Cromartie picked off three Peyton Manning passes. One of those interceptions was a leaping, one-handed while falling backward grab that may be the most impressive INT of the season. His catch and knack for the end zone makes me think the Chargers ought to line this kid up out wide and let him make a play for their struggling offense.

These last three performances have earned Cromartie a trip to Honolulu, in my opinion. Good job with this one, A.J. Smith.

Now, let's get into the rankings…

1The bye week was the only thing that could slow the Patriots down. Poor Buffalo Bills. They get to face a rested New England squad that is ready to continue their domination of the NFL.previous rank: 1
2The Cowboys continued their superb play against the Giants. They have another tough division game against the ‘Skins this week. I don't think there is any team in the NFC that can compete with this team.previous rank: 4
3The Packers finally got their running game going, which if they continue to do so, will pose problems for other teams in the league. I'm not sure they can compete with Dallas, but that blowout of the Vikings sure was impressive.previous rank: 5
4The game against the Browns shouldn't have been that close. In the end, however, the Steelers won and that is all that counts. QB Ben Roehtlisberger is quietly having a great year. Mike Tomlin should be considered for Coach of the Year.previous rank: 3
5Injuries are plaguing this team. Their special teams play was horrid, and Peyton Manning had is worst game as a pro. Still, they should have won the game and if a fluke missed field goal by Adam Vinatieri hadn't sailed right. I think this team will be alright.previous rank: 2
6It is clear that the Giants cannot compete with the rival Cowboys. They can still go deep into the playoffs, though. I really like that 4 defensive end front they use in passing downs. We should see other teams copy that soon.previous rank: 6
7The Jags won a big game against the Titans, on the road. They were able to run the ball very effectively and they got a solid performance from their backup QB. They're only one game behind the Colts in the division now.previous rank: 10
8They won, but it wasn't pretty. Now we've learned that this team has discipline problems, as they fired their security manager for partying with several players before their loss to Minnesota. This validates everyone's fears at the hiring of Norv Turner.previous rank: 9
9They blew their shot at a first place tie with Indianapolis in the AFC South. This division is tough from top to bottom. I think with the improved play of the Texans, this division could be the best in football. Forty-one pass attempts for Vince Young is too much.previous rank: 7
10It's sink or swim time for the Lions. If they get more from their running game they can forget about it. Their next two games are against the Giants and the Packers. We'll know who they really are soon.previous rank: 8
11Tampa Bay can pull ahead in their division if they beat the hapless Falcons. I wouldn't count on it, as they only won one game on the road this season. Look for Garcia and Joey Galloway to go right at that Falcon secondary.previous rank: 14
12Nice shutout of the 49ers, that is what they were supposed to do. With the Bears coming to ton this week, the ‘Hawks might be on the verge of getting that confidence they need down the stretch. Leave Morris in the game and put Alexander on the IR, his heart isn't in it this year.previous rank: 17
13Putting up 28 points on Pittsburgh proves this team is no longer a pushover. Their offensive line gets better every week, not surrendering one sack to the Steelers. The missed field goal at the end kept the game from going to overtime. This team WILL be in the playoffs.previous rank: 12
14They had the game won but they experienced a meltdown in the fourth quarter. Tough up coming schedule (@DAL and @TB). As long as Clinto Portis continues running with purpose, they have a chance in one of those games.previous rank: 11
15Now we're getting into the bad teams. The Broncos are only rnked this high because there is so much bad play around the league right now. They did dominate Kansas City in Arrowhead, though.previous rank: 18
16The Bills are improving, but they are light years behind the Pats in their division. They are in good position for a wild card berth. Rookie RB Marshawn Lynch is fun to watch.previous rank: 20
17Philadelphia showed a lot of pride in their comeback win at Washington. I just don't think this team has what it takes to contend anymore. Sometimes, a fresh start is a good thing. They need some personnel changes fast. Brian Westbrook is the only one worth hanging on to.previous rank: 23
18Beating Oakland was a task and it shouldn't have been. Griese went down in that game and now Rex Grossman is back behind center. Funny thing was, Rex fumbled the very snap he received in the game, but then throws the game-winning touchdown. The rollercoaster is back in commission.previous rank: 24
19Kurt Warner showed flashes of his old self, leading the Cardinals in their much-needed victory over the Lions. They need improvement from their running game, though, because Warner cannot toss 3 touchdowns every week.previous rank: 22
20Making the switch from Steve McNair to Kyle Boller will not help this team. The defense isn't scary anymore, either. I can't wait to see the Browns get revenge this week; I bet they score 40.previous rank: 13
21Their slow start put this team in a position where a lapse like last week really hurts. The Rams absolutely dominated them. Could they have been ahead to their matchup against the Houston? Not likely. Maybe the Panthers next week? Probably not. They're just inconsistent.previous rank: 15
22They have a tough game against the Packers this week. This team is struggling and they will be at home for the playoffs. It is clear they need O-line help and quarterback help. WR Steve Smith has been pretty quiet lately, too.previous rank: 16
23I'm excited to see the kid Brodie Croyle play this week. With Larry Johnson hurt, however, I'm sure he'll have a tough going. Their division is weak and they are certainly not out of it, but if they don't start winning at home they can forget about this season.previous rank: 19
24The Bengals won the game despite not scoring a touchdown. Seven field goals by Shayne Graham was enough to beat the Ravens, but they'll need to punch it in a few times to beat Arizona this week.previous rank: 29
25Adrian Peterson missing the next few games pretty much seals the deal for this club in ‘07. If they don't draft a QB in the first round somebody should be shot. What happened to the defense against Green Bay?previous rank: 21
26.With a win against New Orleans this week, the Texans will find themselves at .500. I think this team is on the rise, but not quite ready for primetime. They're young and talented and I think they still have a lot of fight left in them.previous rank: 25
27Hold on to your hats, the Falcons have won two straight. They are playing for pride now, and they just might play the spoiler down the road. Let's see if they can hold their own against the Bucs.previous rank: 27
28Message to Lane Kiffin: Your season is over. Bring in JaMarcus Russell. Give him a shot, it can't be any worse then McCown or Culpepper. At least Russell can avoid a sack.previous rank: 26
29They played absolutely horribly against the Seahawks on Monday Night. They can't run, pass, and the defense took the night off as well. It is going to be another long decade for this team.previous rank: 28
30The Rams beat the crap out of New Orleans. I don't think it will carry over into anything significant this year. Then again, they play the Niners and they just might go on a small winning streak.previous rank: 31
31Kellen Clemens will get his chance. Too bad it is against the Steelers. He's in for a beating but I'm sure he'll learn. Chad Pennington should be somebody's back up next year.previous rank: 30
32Well, the Fins are the only winless team remaining. I'm sure the Eagles will keep that streak alive for at least one more week. Wouldn't it be great if they were the only team to go both undefeated ('72) and completely defeated ('07)?previous rank: 32
