411's NFL Power Rankings 11.21.07: Week 11
Posted by Don M. Dumas on 11.21.2007

Week 11 in the NFL was full of surprises. It just goes to show that other than New England, there is parity in The League.

Biggest shock of the week: The New York Jets beat the Pittsburgh Steelers. After jumping out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, the Jets almost gave the game away. But, under the leadership of …Kellen Clemens, they held on to win in overtime.

Okay, so Clemens didn't do much. It was actually the defense that stepped up and won this game for the Jets. They held Roethelisberger to under 200 yards passing—and sacked him 7 times—and only allowed Willie Parker a meager 52 yards on the ground.

Thomas Jones stepped up big as well, becoming the first running back to reach the century mark against the Steelers since 2005.

In the most bizarre finish in recent memory, the Cleveland Browns beat the Baltimore Ravens in overtime. The play everyone is talking about is the 51-yard field goal at the end of regulation by Phil Dawson to force the extra session.

The kick hit the right upright and then appeared to hit the crossbar and fall short in the end zone. After review, the ball actually hit off the curved support beam of the goal post; meaning the kick was good.

In OT, the Browns took advantage of a great kick return by Josh Cribbs and put Dawson on the field again, this time from 38 yards out. He easily made this kick, sending the Browns to a 6-4 record, just one game behind Pittsburgh for the AFC North lead.

Oh, and New England dominated once again, absolutely destroying the Buffalo Bills 56-10. It makes you wonder: How good is this team? Well, if they keep playing like this, there is no doubt that they will be considered the best team in the history of the NFL.

Okay, let's rank ‘em!

1They're hot. Tom Brady throwing 5 touchdowns for the third time this season, many of them coming when the game has already been decided, is proof-positive that Belicheck has a score to settle with those who called him a cheater.previous rank: 1
2How in the world the Redskins left Terrell Owens open so many times is beyond disbelief. What I am really surprised at is when T.O. went into the game as a defensive back on the last play to defend against the Hail Mary, he had an opportunity to intercept the pass. He knocked it down instead. Could be that be interpreted as being unselfish?previous rank: 2
3Brett Favre was on point. He completed 22 of 30 passes and tossed three touchdowns. The game was never really close. However, the Packers may have had a setback in their running game. Take away Ryan Grant's long run of 23 yards, and he only gained 65 yards on 19 carries.previous rank: 3
4It wasn't pretty, but the Colts won. It is clear that injuries will be the downfall of this team. I don't think any team is afraid to face them in the playoffs. However, they are 8-2, so they deserve the high ranking.previous rank: 5
5With David Garrard back in the lineup, the Jaguars are once again a team to be reckoned with. Their running game was impressive, too. Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor ran hard, and San Diego had a hard time tackling them.previous rank: 7
6Another strong outing by this talented defense. The best part of this match-up was the trash talking between Lions QB Jon Kitna and Michael Strahan. Kitna claimed the Lions were the better team, and Strahan said should the two teams meet in the playoffs, the Giants will spank that ass again. I believe Strahan.previous rank: 6
7The Steelers had an opportunity to really pull ahead in their division with a game against the Jets, followed by Miami, and Cincinnati. Well, they blew it. Clearly, this wasn't their best showing but I'm sure they'll rebound and take it out on the Fins on Monday night. (Who's going to tune for that game? I will because it's my job, but seriously, who else wants to see that game?)previous rank: 4
8Tampa Bay didn't play that hard and they still crushed the Falcons. Lost in the hype of Jeff Garcia's play is the solid contribution they're getting the defense week in and week out. They are ranked sixth in yards allowed per game. If they could cause a few more turnovers this team would be really dangerous.previous rank: 11
9Things have been moving right along for this team after they took the ball out Shaun Alexander's hands and put it in Matt Hasselbeck's. After falling behind 10-0 to Chicago, they bounced back and controlled the second half. However, with the NFC teams playing so much better this time around, it will be one-and-done come playoff time..previous rank: 12
10With 6 wins already, this team has already exceeded expectations. Both Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow came up big when they needed it most. This team has weapons, folks, and if Pittsburgh slips again, they could be in a tie for in first place.previous rank: 13
11I am convinced that Philip Rivers is the biggest crybaby in the NFL. Every time the play doesn't go as designed, he whines for a flag. And boy, does this guy talk trash. As the QB, he needs to just shut up and play ball. Nobody wants to hear the mouth of a guy with a 77.9 rating, leading .500 ball club.previous rank: 8
12Once again, Vince Young had too many pass attempts. He is not capable of winning a game solely on the strength of his arm. The Titians need a running game to keep defenses honest. If they expect Young to win games by throwing, they better get him some better receivers.previous rank: 9
13QB Jay Cutler played the type of game that Denver expects out of him every week. If he can consistently play the way he did on Monday Night, the Broncos will be able to win the division title. The defense also finally played a full 4 quarters, as well. Chicago shouldn't be a problem this week. Shouldn't.previous rank: 15
14The Lions had their chances, but dropped passes killed them. Their remaining schedule is tough (they play Dallas, San Diego, and Green Bay twice) and suddenly Kitna's prediction of 10 wins doesn't seem likely.previous rank: 10
15The ‘Skins fought back extremely hard against the Cowboys but fell just short. They actually out-gained Dallas but allowed T.O.—the one person they should have keyed on—to beat them. Perhaps if Sean Taylor would have played, he would have been the difference in this 5-point defeat. They'll have their chance for redemption in Week 17, when they get Dallas at home.previous rank: 14
16It is a good thing that the Eagles were up against the Dolphins and not…say…anybody else. They played horribly and won by 10. The biggest news was Donovan McNabb leaving the game with an ankle sprain that will keep him out at least a week. This pretty much solidifies him playing elsewhere in '08.previous rank: 17
17Samari Rolle won this game for Arizona, picking off three passes and returning two for scores. Overall, they forced 5 turnovers and find themselves on a two-game winning streak. With the 49ers coming up this week they should stretch that to 3. At 5-5, they certainly aren't out of it.previous rank: 19
18Getting Andre Johnson back makes this offense dangerous again. When he plays, the Texans are 3-0. When he doesn't, 2-5. QB Matt Schaub was efficient, and the defense did their share, causing 3 turnovers. Other than Johnson, this team's best player might be kicker Kris Brown. On the season, he has only missed two kicks all year and is a perfect 3-3 from beyond 50 yards.previous rank: 26
19Like everyone else in The League, the Bills were just overmatched against New England. With games against Jacksonville and Washington looming, their playoff hopes are slowly fading away. I think Losman is making progress, though, and they should petition the NFL to leave the AFC East. That way they wouldn't have to face the Patriots twice a year.previous rank: 16
20With their remaining schedule, the playoffs are just about out of the picture. One more loss will seal the deal. As soon as they get that loss, they might consider tanking the rest of the way. Believe it or not, the position they need most is not quarterback; it's safety. And running back. And O-line. And then quarterback.previous rank: 18
21The defense didn't play that bad in their loss to Cleveland. The special teams put them in bad position and so did the offense with their 4 turnovers. Normally, 30 points by the Ravens would guarantee victory, but times are changing. McGahee is running well, though. previous rank: 20
22Even without Adrian Peterson, the Vikings beat the Raiders. It must be nice to have Chester Taylor as your second-string back. He filled in nicely, scoring 3 touchdowns and rushing for 164 yards on 22 carries. WR Sidney Rice looked better than Travaris Jackson, completing both of his passes for 94 yards.previous rank: 25
23They let Green Bay get up on them early, and they didn't have enough to get back into it. They only sacked Brett Favre once, and that was why they lost. No rushing attack hurt them also. Good for Vinny in getting paid just to show up; nobody expects any wins out of him.previous rank: 22
24After seemingly salvaging their season, they Saints are on a two-game skid. They can keep their heads above water with a win against Carolina this week, but it won't be easy. When a team struggles like New Orleans is struggling, no game is easy. What a disappointment.previous rank: 21
25The Chiefs almost handed the Colts their third straight defeat. Alas, they crumbled at the end. Brodie Croyle looked pretty good, however. He didn't throw an interception and put some passes right on the money. The experience that he will gain throughout the remainder of this season will pay huge dividends in '08.previous rank: 23
26At 3-7 the Bengals have to be the biggest failure of '07. T.J. Houshmanzadeh is the only one showing up to play every week. They couldn't even beat Arizona at home! And to top it off, Carson Palmer threw 4 interceptions. Break out the paper bags, the Bungals are back.previous rank: 24
27How pathetic is your team when the fans cheer when Joey Harrington enters the game? Harrington actually did a decent job, but it was the 11 penalties and 4 turnovers that lost this game for Atlanta. I think they've peeked at 3 wins.previous rank: 27
28Beating the Steelers makes this team the best of the worst. This season really isn't going that bad. The thing is, last year they overachieved and had no business in the playoffs. This year, they're playing they should have last year, if that makes any sense. They're young, though. They might be good in '09.previous rank: 31
29The Rams narrowly escaped the 49ers. This game was absolutely a bore, as both teams barely managed 400 yards…combined and scored a total of 22 points. The Rams are on a 2-game winning streak, until Seattle this week ends it right there.previous rank: 30
30These are games that the Raiders could win, but they don't. They always find a way to fold at the end. Until they play JaMarcus Russell, nobody is going to care to watch them play. Not even the Raider Nation can stand to watch this team anymore.previous rank: 28
31There is absolutely no bright spot for this team. They can't score, can't prevent anyone from scoring, and have no young talent that is fun to watch. It's a shame, really. The once dominant Bay Area is stuck with two powder puff squads.previous rank: 29
32With Pittsburgh on Monday Night, chalk up another loss for this franchise. High-flyer Ricky Williams might be back in uniform soon, though, keeping this team in the spotlight for yet another wrong reason. I say let him play, but make him play special teams, too.previous rank: 32
