411's NFL Power Rankings 11.28.07: Week 12
Posted by Don M. Dumas on 11.28.2007

First, I want to start this column by offering my condolences to Sean Taylor's family and the Washington Redskins organization. It is truly a tragedy to lose someone, especially at the tender age of 24.

I have noticed some in the media are bringing up questions about Taylor's checkered past and I just want to condemn those engaged in the practice. Taylor was the victim here and no matter he may have done, he did not deserve to be awakened in the middle of the night and murdered in front of his girlfriend and young child.

But the world will continue to turn and the NFL will continue to play games. I, of course, will continue to give my insight on those games as well, so let's talk football.

After Week 12, everyone wants to know the answer to one question: Why in the world would the Denver Broncos kick the ball to Devin Hester? Sorry folks, I have no answer for you. I will say this: I hope teams continue to kick the ball to him because, let's be honest; Hester is the most exciting player to watch in the NFL.

True indeed, Hester was allowed to keep the Chicago Bears in the game. But, the defense did allow the Bears to march down and score two touchdowns in the last 5 minutes. The catch Bernard Berrian made in the end zone—on Champ Bailey no less—was spectacular.

And of course the Pittsburgh Steelers against the Miami Dolphins was everything we thought it would be: BOOORRRINNNNGGG. Who though it would have been boring for a complete lack of scoring? I thought the game would blow because the Steelers would win 30-0, not 3-0. Sure, the conditions helped Miami to stay in the game, but I think their defense played tremendously and they deserve all the credit.

One more note about Week 12: The Eagles DID NOT beat the Patriots. Some are debating whether or not the Eagles have devised a "blueprint" to beating the Patriots. Maybe they would have, if they would've actually beaten the Patriots.

New England did not destroy a mediocre Eagles team. So what? This is the NFL, the games are supposed to be close. The Patriots can't be expected to blow out every team they play. The NFL season is too long for that. In fact, playing and winning close games, as the Pats have now done twice this year, can only help them come playoff time.

1It wasn't pretty for a change, but New England remains unbeaten. If you noticed, they didn't even look too worried on the sideline. This team knows they're the best, and I think going undefeated is exactly what motivates them.previous rank: 1
2Dallas did what they were supposed to: they handled a far inferior team. Next week is their highly anticipated game with the Green Bay Packers. Whoever wins will have homefield advantage throughout the playoffs, which very well could determine the NFC representative in the Super Bowl.previous rank: 2
3Brett Favre might have had the best day of his long career against the Lions on Thanksgiving. He completed 31 of 41 passes (at one point connecting on 20 straight) for 381 yards with three touchdowns and 0 interceptions. It is terrible that those without digital cable can't watch their game with Dallas on the NFL Network. Just email me and you can come over to my place.previous rank: 3
4The Colts were actually down 10-0 at the end of the first quarter but then decided to turn it on. Rookie wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez stepped up big, gaining 105 yards on just 6 catches. Defensively, the Colts rebounded after a slow start. Showdown with the Jaguars will determine division winner.previous rank: 4
5Maurice Jones-Drew gained just 10 yards on 10 carries, but Fred Taylor got ran wild. Really, with David Garrard protecting the football like he has and the defense playing so well, other teams really have no option but to try and take away the running game. Good luck with that next week, Indianapolis.previous rank: 5
6Another lackluster performance from the offense but the Bucs still found a way to win. Actually, the Redskins showed them the way by turning the ball over early and often (6 turnovers in all). Hopefully Jeff Garcia, who left the game in the first quarter, will rebound quickly to make a playoff push.previous rank: 8
7I can't knock the Steelers for winning, but it shouldn't have been that close. They started nearly every drive in Dolphin territory, yet they only scored 3 points. Now the resurgent Bengals are coming to town, and they will surely score more than Miami. They'll have to play better to keep ahead of the Browns in the division.previous rank: 7
8Seattle escaped St. Louis thanks to the buttery fingers of Gus Frerotte, who fumbled the snap on fourth and goal with 27 seconds left. Offensively, Seattle struggled and a kickoff return kept them in the game. When a team is one-dimensional, they're going to have games like this. But as long as they keep winning who cares?previous rank: 9
9Winners of 5 out of their last 6, the Browns are one of the hottest teams in the NFL right now. They are playing exactly how a team who is poised to enter the playoffs should. I still can't get over how quietly they are going about their business, too. There is no boastful predictions or guarantees coming from this team, they're just getting the job done.previous rank: 10
10Philip Rivers had a great game. How Baltimore let Antonio Gates get so wide open is beyond me. On defense, the Chargers were superb, holding the Kyle Boller-led Ravens to just 210 total yards. The Chargers are now in sole possession of first place and control their own destiny.previous rank: 11
11Eli Manning had the worst game imaginable for a quarterback. Three of his 4 interceptions were returned for scores. The defense held their own, but offensive mistakes cost them this game. It the Giants are on the verge of another second half of the season collapse. Going to Chicago this week will not be easy.previous rank: 6
12Well, the Lions jump two spots even though they lost. That is what happens when teams ranked 12-19 all lose. Really, this is a pity ranking because from here until the end of the season, I see nothing but bad things for this teams. Unless they prove they can beat a good team, and not just bad teams, they're finished.previous rank: 14
13After a good start to the season, the Titans find themselves barely one game above .500. If they don't start running the ball, their playoff hopes will fade away like a Jordan jumpshot. Offensively, they couldn't do anything against the Bengals.previous rank: 12
14Defensively the ‘Skins did everything they could to win the game. Four fumbles in a little more than a quarter was too much to overcome, though. And although Jason Camobell threw an INT late, I get the feeling I'm watching a future Pro Bowler every time I see him play.previous rank: 15
15The Bears fought back ferociously and stunned Denver. Losing Cedric Benson won't really hurt them too much. Rex Grossman, by they way, looked really good on the Bears' last two possessions. How sweet would the redemption be for Rex if the Bears win out and make the playoffs?previous rank: 20
16Considering their back-up quarterback had to start the game, the Eagles played just about their best game. Alas, it wasn't enough to beat the Pats. This team will experience a serious rebuilding process beginning in'08. Message to Eagles fans: Brace yourself, you are about to lose a lot of games in the next couple of years.previous rank: 16
17The coaches lost this game for Denver. Choosing to kick to Devin Hester was the worst decision this team has made since giving Maurice Clarett a tryout. Now they find themselves chasing the Chargers for first place and they better hope they catch them because the wild card team is certainly not coming out of the AFC West.previous rank: 13
18The Browns took away Andre Johnson and in the process taking away Houston's chances of winning. It's strange, really. How can one of the NFL's worst defenses take your biggest threat? They have to find away to get Johnson better matchups or they'll lose many more games.previous rank: 18
19Killing the Giants might give this team some confidence. The defense is already there, and with reports of Adrian Peterson being healthy enough to play this week, they may have a pretty good formula to make a last minute effort to squeeze in there. They have to win out, of course, which is easier said than done.previous rank: 22
20The Cardinals put up over 500 total yards and 31 points, but allowed the 49ers to get the best of them in overtime. Larry Fitzgerald is a beast and it would be nice if he had a compliment on the other side. Yes, I'm talking about Anquan Boldin. Step up already.previous rank: 17
21Buffalo had a chance to make the playoffs this year, but they keep switching their quarterback. Losman is the way to go, but they keep throwing in Edwards. The message to the rest of the team is: Make a mistake and you'll be on the bench. Naturally, the team will play scared under those conditions, and that never translate to wins in the NFL.previous rank: 19
22Drew Brees had a great game. At this point, New Orleans is playing for pride. If only they could be more consistent they could own the NFC South. I hope Sean Payton spends everyone of his draft picks in '08 on defenders. Or at least trade somebody for a good veteran.previous rank: 24
23Just when I mentioned the Bungles being back, they play like the Bengals we all expected at the beginning of the season. Chad Johnson getting behind the camera was another classic celebration by the wide receiver. How about Carson Palmer? Only six incomplete passes out of 38 attempts.previous rank: 26
24Offensively this team will continue to struggle. They should consider trying the option or something. On the other side of the ball, they looked slow compared to the Chargers. McGahee has scored a touchdown in 6 straight games, though.previous rank: 21
25Julius Peppers is quite the player, and Steve Smith is good, too. They both need some help; quickly. With the running game suspect and no quarterback, how can they expect to win at all? One hundred and ninety-five yards total? How embarrassing…previous rank: 23
26The Chiefs had a chance to stay one game out in the division race, but let the Raiders get one on them. They keep losing at home, which is not good. I would have given them a chance against San Diego because the game will be played in Arrowhead but that doesn't seem to matter much anymore.previous rank: 25
27The Rams were so close to getting their third win. Their backup quarterback fumbled their opportunity, and I think the wind was taken out of their sails with this loss. Steven Jackson is playing great football since he returned from injury..previous rank: 29
28Well, until they get better quarterback play they'll continue to lose. They really have nobody to blame but themselves, though. Linebacker Michael Boley looked good, though, sacking Peyton Manning 3 times and forcing a fumble.previous rank: 27
29Justin Fargas was amazing in their victory over the Chiefs. The fact that the Raiders only turned the ball over once also made a big difference. This win snaps a 17-game losing streak to division opponents.previous rank: 30
30The 49ers never gave up and sacked Kurt Warner in the end zone, causing a fumble which they recovered for the game winner. Frank Gore finally came alive, and the offense protected the ball. Yet, they barely won. This team needs to play a perfect game just to squeak by their opponents.previous rank: 31
31Beating the Steelers did not carry over their game with Dallas. They only managed 180 yards and a little over 22 minutes of possession. Don't look now, but they might lose next week against [gasp] the Dolphins?previous rank: 28
32Well, they fought the best they could but came up short. Now they lost Ricky Williams after only 6 carries. But, dare I say, they have a chance to win next week against the Jets. I think they will win. It is almost impossible to go 0-16 and if not the Jets then who?previous rank: 32
