Behind the Numbers 02.15.08: Spygate
Posted by Chris Widner on 02.15.2008
This week I decide to vent my frustrations with the Spygate controversy. The hatemail will be heavy this time around...
For those of you familiar with my column you know that I like to stick to the facts and give my opinion here and there. Even when I do give my opinion it's usually about the action on the field, as I try to avoid the emotional hot-button topics that go on outside the lines. For the first time I've decided to use my column to get something off my chest and vent a bit. This week I decide to cover the "Spygate" controversy that is hogging the airwaves once again.
Before you start writing in now about me being a Patriots fanboy let me make it clear. Yes, I'm a Patriots fan.
But I'm not writing this in some lame attempt to justify what they've done or supposedly done. It wasn't against the rules until this season and Belichick decided to do it anyways, so I think the team deserved to be punished.
What's my problem then? It's quite simple, I think this has gone on way too long. This is something that was uncovered week 1 and people still complain about it. I've seen some really ignorant comments made about how the Patriots cheat, which is why they were 16-0. Do you really think they continued doing that after they were caught? Do you really think that the other teams didn't make darn sure that the Patriots weren't taping them? People have been hoping and praying for the Patriots to lose, and then they finally did. What was the response? More Patriots bashing and more whining about "Spygate." How about some respect for the Giants, you know, the Super Bowl champions? There are enough great stories coming from the Super Bowl that the Patriot bashing should have a backseat. What about David "Never Heard of Him" Tyree and his spectacular catch? What about Steve Smith and how he stepped up in the biggest game of his life? What about Eli Manning growing up before our eyes and becoming the player the Giants had hoped for? What about the Giants revolutionizing the way defense will be played for the next 5 years? Now before you comment about the Patriots fans that are starting a petition about the play clock let me make my feelings clear. They're just as idiotic as the people still bashing the Patriots. There were play clock issues, but it had nothing to do with why the Giants won.
Once of the most amusing aspects to this controversy has been the extreme difference in opinion between current and former NFL coaches and players. Ask any former coach or player what they think and they'll tell you it's really not that big of a deal. Ask a current player and they'll make it sound like it's the end of the world. Have we all forgotten what it was like to play football? Last I checked coaches and players in high school try to steal signals, and most teams switch signals from week to week. Was it wrong? According to the rules, yes. Was it the biggest cheating scandal ever? Not even close. Now we have Senator Spector grilling Roger Goodell and claiming that he was told the Patriots have taped opponents since Belichick's first year. Let's get something very clear, it wasn't against the rules back then. Now think about this: only 8 Patriots' players from this season were part of the teams that won 3 Super Bowls. That means that at the very least, 45 players have gone to other teams or retired since then. Combine that with the coaches that have left and you have, at the very least, 50 individuals that would have know about this "cheating" yet said nothing. Do you really think that a player would go to a new team and conveniently forget to mention this to their coaches? Of course not. They'd mention it right away because they wouldn't want to give the Patriots that advantage.
Back to Senator Arlen, what a joke this clown is. In our "guilty until proven innocent, and even still you might not be innocent" society we think that the Patriots must be guilty since a Senator is looking into this. That sounds fine and well until you realize that he has close ties to Comcast. The NFL has been going head to head against Comcast and other major cable companies to try to get them to carry the NFL Network on their standard cable package, but these idiots want to act like they're hurting for cash in the cable industry. Like the commercials pointed out, I could do without Oxygen, Lifetime, Lifetime Movie Network, Women's Entertainment, and 3 home shopping channels. Drop one and give me the NFL Network. So the NFL pissed off some cable companies and the cable companies got one of their boys to rough the NFL up a bit. Suddenly things are a little clearer aren't they?
If you want to ask me why I think Goodell destroyed the tapes, I'll be honest, I don't know. Does it seem shady? Of course it does, but when you weigh the other arguments against this one problem, common sense should prevail. The real problem is with our society. People are actually upset and concerned that the Patriots video taped their opponents. Yet we're not that upset that the government wants to be able to spy on us without a warrant? We're not that concerned about torture? I love the NFL as much as the next guy, and probably more, but let's put things in perspective. This isn't life and death, this is a game. Hate a team all you want, but at least be somewhat reasonable about it. I can't stand Oklahoma University but I'm not about to call Bob Stoops and the entire university a bunch of cheaters because 3 of his players took improper handouts. Heck, I've been accused of building up Adrian Peterson as more than he really is. If you really hate the Patriots and hope the worst for them, I'll let you in on a little secret: it's already happened. To go 18-0 and then lose the Super Bowl in the last minute is the most painful thing that could happen to this team. And if you just want to complain about the Boston fanbase, here's something else: They're already talking about baseball.
It wasn't against the rules to tape people practices, and their defensive signals back in 2000 (when Belicheck started doing it)? Where is your proof. You say they are wrong. Prove them wrong.

You know what would solve the problem? You should just take their three Super Bowl rings away. Then we can worry about torture. Hell, the hill billies in Florida "elected" Georgie-boy.

This was on nfl.com
(http://www.nfl.com/news/story;jsessionid=B9A8731B8A282C7ABF0B8064B7D0 B530?id=09000d5d802456c2&template=with-video&confirm=true)
Last year? That was the rule. They added more in 2006...not 2007, my friend. Get it right.
Patriots under investigation for following rules, guidelines violations ...
1. Page 105 of the Game Operations manual says: "No video recording devices of any kind are permitted to be in use in the coaches' booth, on the field, or in the locker room during the game." It later says: "All video shooting locations must be enclosed on all sides with a roof overhead."
2. And, a memo from Ray Anderson, NFL head of football operations, to head coaches and GMs on Sept. 6, 2006 said: "Video taping of any type, including but not limited to taping of an opponent’s offensive or defensive signals, is prohibited on the sidelines, in the coaches’ booth, in the locker room, or at any other locations accessible to club staff members during the game."

If what you say is true Chris, the Patriots needed to tape people to win every Superbowl. Ever since the rule change in Sept. 2006, the Patriots haven't won a Superbowl. Hmmm...maybe Belicheck isn't that good of a coach.

What facts do you have to support the assertion that taping like this wasn't against the rules before last season?
Anyhow, you are dead wrong. This is not a new rule.
Sad - but now the only thing that Bellichick/Brady will be known for is cheating. And the Patriots fans will be known for defending the right to cheat to the death.

Ironic that this article was put up the same day Senator Spector said that Goodell told him that the had proof of Bellicheck cheating every year he's been coaching the team.

There was an unidentified coach(of course) who said that they though belichik was taping teams back in his cleveland days.

I'm an Eagles fan... but theres no way the Pats were cheating in the 2005 Super Bowl.. if they were, I dont think Brady would have gotten knocked on his ass so much, and McNabb prolly wouldn't have thrown for 357 yards if they knew he what was coming... give it a rest already... this is similar to how people hate Cena in WWE, yet can't stop watching or discussing him..

and the easiset way to remedy this problem would let the defensive captains have the communciations device that all starting qb's have on offense.
Plus arlen specter sits on comast's board and also is an ardent eagle fan

Weren't the representatives for the Patriots one of the people that wanted to stop this. I wonder why?

You all are a bunch of ignorant haters. Firstly, you don't know what was on those tapes...period. You're allowed to tape formations, on the field, and off the field -- who's to say that a couple signs didn't get on there as well? The FACTS are WE DON'T KNOW THE FACTS! And unfortunately a private company like the NFL doesn't have to tell us a damn thing.
So why don't you all stop crying about Spygate and ready yourselves for another year of the Patriot's killing your dreams of the play-offs.
It's funny how nobody is ready to admit that the entire game was a greatly contested game, back and forth, and was defense heavy. It wasn't lopsided -- it was just that Brady didn't put up a billion points that threw everybody off.
Anyways, unless you're on the know, the suggestion is to keep your trap shut...seriously.

The greatest trick the devil pulled was making the world believe he didn't exist. It is a little convenient that they always won by 3 points. But they aren't cheaters. Nahhhhh.....Puh-lease! I was born at night, not LAST night.

very well put. i try to say the same unbias things but i still get the hatred and the ignorance of the comments too. what i cant figure out is the steelers have publicly said they know there was no foul play in the games in 04 but spector, in an election year, says they are liars by still looking into it. my question to spector is why would the steelers say that if they knew they lost unfairly? its a ploy for reelection and thats that. even the jets dont think they lost that game because of cheating, yet there is one of their dumb fans now suing the pats for consumer fraud. what a joke. he wants to sue the pats for consumer fraud but not the jets for hyping up chad "my arm is weaker than a third grader's" pennington? all i want to see is proof. i hear they taped the rams walkthrough but no tape still. not to mention the rams had 4 turnovers in that game and scored on their only red zone possession but the pats still cheated to win? in the 11 games directly challenged by everyone(playoffs 2001-2004) the pats DEFENSE had a +22 turnover margin. thats better than half the league did this year in 16 games. defense wins championships, as noted in this years superbowl, but everyone is still on the fact that they cheated by doing something thats been legal forever. my question is this..."what does it matter where you tape the signals from?" i mean, its only illegal to tape them from the sidelines, but its not illegal to tape them, or steal them. so whats the difference how you get them since it always has and always will be an acceptable part of the game? this has been blown way out of proportion and i think many have forgotten how much more you have to do to win a football game. there are 100 other things that need to be done right in a 60 minute game, yet all these people still think its about video.
Posted By: patsfan111111 (Guest) on February 17, 2008 at 12:24 PM
This is so pitiful. We have total denial that rules were broken even when caught red handed. Then we have the old 'it isn't serious if anything worse has happened anywhere on earth' excuse. Now Pats fans are so in denial and panicked they're saying anything to reassure themselves their team deserved the wins they got. "There are 100 other things
that need to be done right in a 60 minute game, yet all these people still
think its about video." In a league where a phantom call, a shoestring tackle or getting tiptoes down a quarter inch in bounds determines outcomes, you're damn right it's about video. And if it doesn't matter why bother to do it, least of all against the Jets? Because Belicheat is like that. He got told not to do something and wasn't about to let that stand unchallenged. I thought this was old news and should be dropped, but since Pats fans are so in denial I hope it gets driven into the ground, all the way to next season. BTW, Goodell was right to destroy the tapes. The case was closed, punishment was handed out, and it's a fact they would have ended up leaked and on the internet otherwise. The truth came out and seeing it would only provide an image that would burn into people's minds and give the league a worse black eye than it has.

ok i'm a diehard dallas cowboy fan living in New England so i'm pretty much miserable all football season cause no matter how good the cowboys play i gotta listen to morons talk about how the pats are the greatest team in history and how belicheck and brady are gods of football.
when this whole scandal came out i was laughing in everyones faces. i feel that the punishment was weak and that if they had won the SB then an * would have been necessary. that being said people need to calm the 'F' down about this. season is over, they lost time to move on. and the fact that a senator is turning this into a government case is simply disgusting. WE'RE STILL AT WAR AND IN A RECESSION, ARE YOU F*CKING KIDDING ME.
grow up people its only a game and on that note as much as it kills me to say it as a huge patriot hater regardless of spygate the pats were insanely talented this year and anyone who refuses to acknowledge that is a moron who doesn't know a damn thing about football. there i said it

People hate on the Pat's because
A)they WERE CAUGHT CHEATING,
B.) The NFL made "light" of it and handed out a "slap on the wrist"
C.) Almost every "netural" Sportscaster in the nation seemed to be a fan boy of the Pat's, so backlash of having any team "forced" on you gets old. look ta the Cowboys, they are still catching greif over the "America's Team" thing, over 30 years later.
D.) The Patroits and their fans are a smug bunch,,,like the Eagels and their fans are A-holes
They Patriots are/were a great team, but they DID cheat..they got caught and were punished. Like it or not it is over for now...But should they be caught again, well that would be a different story.
BTW I am a Patriot "Hater", but I do know that they are a team stacked FULL OF TALENT
