411's Monday Morning NFL Cup of Coffee 09.15.08: NFL Week 2 Breakdown
Posted by Ken Schmidt on 09.15.2008
It took two weeks to get an NFL Monday Morning Summary column together but it's here. So grab a cup of joe and stop paying for newspapers, I got you covered.
And week 2 is in the books and I am finally up and running on a working computer. I was going to do this last week but I had a full computer crash, which is never fun, but better late than never. I want to say something to back up my comments on Vince Young being a baby. If the man is actually considering suicide than that is no laughing matter, mental health is a big issue in this country and to many people think mental illnesses are not as real as a physical illness. If the man is feeling depressed than he needs help and it has to stem from more than his immaturity about people booing him, that is just being immature. Either way I am having trouble believing a therapist report is in the media, last time I checked that stuff was confidential and if the therapist really gave that information away, his license to practice medicine will be revoked. Enough of that depressing talk, let's get into the most exciting week of football so far this season, and it is going to be hard to top this one.
TENNESSEE 24
CINCINATTI 7
Summary
With Vince Young still injured it was Kerry Collins getting the call under center for the Titans and I must say, he fits into this team better. With Collins being a presence in the pocket it opens more running room for LenDale White and Chris Johnson to get more room. Those two did a lot against the Bengals weak defense with Johnson break 100 yards on just 19 carries and LenDale getting 59 and a touchdown on just 18 carries. Meanwhile, the Bengals offense looked lost against the stifling Titans D. Palmer had two picks and just 134 yards.
Titans
This Titans team looks like they are for real, especially on the defensive side of the ball. There was plenty of big plays by the linemen keeping the rushing attack bottled up and those two interceptions absolutely took the Bengals out of the game. This was close until the D took over the game. The Vince Young saga remains uncertain as to who will be the QB for this team but I really think Kerry Collins is the better choice for this team, who appear to be a true contender early.
Bengals
This team is a mess. The running game was none existent and Carson Palmer is not the same Carson Palmer that was once as good a quarterback as Manning and Romo. This team is a mess and there are no signs of things getting better. Forget being a playoff contender, this team might end up with just 4 or 5 wins.
GREEN BAY 48
DETRIOT 25
Summary
This game was 21-3 going into halftime and really was never even close. Greg Jennings had 100+ in the first half including a 62 yard catch and square dance (seriously watch the play) and things were over early. Kitna and the Lions picked up some garbage points but this thing was never close, easily the most boring part of this exciting Sunday.
Packers
I am not sure if I am the only one who thinks so, but I said preseason and I'll say it again, the Packers are the best team in the NFC. Though Bret Favre may be a hall of famer, we was not the star that made the Packers shine last year, it was the playmaking WRs and the incredible defense. There were a few blips for the Packers, that safety was inexcusable, and if they need to, a new long snapper is going to be necessary. Also, Ryan Grant, Mr. I Need Pro Bowl Running Back Money has not performed this season. Maybe the money is going to his head but if you think you deserve big money than you can't have 15 carries for 20 yards.
Lions
No more dreams for the Lions as their 0-2 start behind two blowout losses pretty much shows where this team stands, and that is a rebuilding phase. A new QB is going to be necessary but Calvin Johnson is incredible, that long TD was an amazing route and Kevin Smith seems like he could be a player. Maybe some day but the Lions are going to be bottom feeders this season.
NEW YORK GIANTS 41
ST. LOUIS 13
Summary
I know I said in the opening that this was the most exciting week of football I have seen in a while but this was another snoozer, as expected. The Giants did not jump out early like the Packers did but they turned on the jets in the end and blew the Rams away. It was just another Rams game, much like last week. Receivers were running open and the corners look like they would struggle covering some high school receivers. This was a blowout like expected.
Giants
I had a feeling this was going to get ugly the second Plaxico Burress turned a safety out of his shoes and caught a long TD pass. For the Giants you had to take everything that came out of this game with a grain of salt. Yes, you blew a team away and yes, both your games this season were never even all that close. However, the offense can't be to full of themselves because this is the worst defense I have seen in my life and the defense the same, because the Rams can not protect Bulger at all. I am reserving judgment on this team until they play some real competition.
Rams
At least Tory Holt did something today because I am not sure but I don't think he ever had a 0 yard game, that is until last week against the Eagles. This team has problem, and I mean big problems. They have the highlight reel players but there is nothing in between. I don't see the Rams fixing these problems anytime soon either.
OAKLAND 23
KANSAS CITY 8
Summary
Oakland really set the tone early by shutting out the Chiefs early and even chasing Damon Huard for some guy named Tyler Thigpen, anyone who knows who he is and where he comes from, you have to much free time. The Raiders D blazed the way in this one and possibly the best thing that could've happened to the Raiders did. Fargas went donw and Kiffin was forced to make McFadden the featured back. After that Darren exploded and JaMarcus Russell didn't have to get chased around during broken protection, because it was pounding on the run all the way to the blowout victory.
Raiders
Darren McFadden is the best running back in Oakland and he should get the majority of the carries for the rest of his career. Russell looked horrible again today going 6/17 but the game ball needs to be split in half between the Chiefs amazing defense and than Darren McFadden putting it away with 164 yards on the ground including a 50 yard dash and a highlight reel 19 yard TD shuffle. This kid is the real deal and could make the terrible Raiders into a passable football team.
Chiefs
The Chiefs took a huge step forward last week hanging with the Patriots until the last play of the game, Brady or no Brady. However, this week is a giant step back. The defense let a rookie running back absolutely destroy them and the offense did nothing all day. It might be a long year for this squad who is off to a 0-2 start.
INDIANAPOLIS 18
MINNESOTA 15
Summary
And we finally get to an exciting football game. The Vikings jumped out to a 15-0 lead but the key is, they had lots of scoring opportunities and kicked FIVE field goals, two of which were very short field goals when they couldn't get into the endzone on short yardage situations. They let the Colts stick around and two big plays later it's 15-15. A last second field goal sent the Vikings away shaking their heads.
Colts
Some people believe the Vikings were a contender going into this year but I was not one of them so the Colts being 1-1 with a blowout loss to the Bears and than a squeaker win against the Vikings makes this a HORRIBLE start to the season. It was just two big plays that got the Colts into the game and that was the amazing catch and lateral by Anthony Gonzalez (who led the Colts in receiving this game) and than the big TD catch by Reggie Wayne that tied the game. I am not impressed by the Colts and Joseph Addai looks like he is running with cement shoes out there. Another bad week for him.
Vikings
Adrian Peterson continues to be the best running back in football when he is healthy. He is running in a high gear and just carrying tacklers downfield. Somebody get this guy a quarterback because the potential MVP of the league is on an 0-2 team right now.
WASHINGTON 29
NEW ORLEANS 24
Summary
I really thought the Saints had this one put away; that is, until the defense got embarrassed by big plays from Jason Campbell. Drew Brees looked inept early but got his gears turning towards the end of the game and with the score 25-14 going into the 4th quarter most thought the Saints were on their way to a 2-0 start. Than all of a sudden Jason Campbell disappeared and Joe Montana rose like a phoenix into Campbell's jersey. Campbell finished with 321 yards and the game winning 62 yard touchdown pass to Moss.
Redskins
I have to give credit where credit is due, Campbell looked like a seasoned pro in this game. He kept his cool when his team was down and ended up with the great game winning TD pass. This is a great win for the Skins to get back on track because they were in the playoffs last year and they expect to be there again. However, coaching will not get them there. You do not go for two in the middle of the third quarter! There was a whole 4th quarter to go and that 1 point could have come back to bite them in the ass later. Portis had a solid game with 96 on the ground and two touchdowns.
Saints
For the Saints this loss could be a turning point; turning them in the direction of another mediocre 8-8 season. With the Panthers making noise early in the year the Saints can not afford to blow games like they did today to the Redskins. Sure they are without their star wide receiver but the receiver shouldn't make the quarterback and Brees looked bad out there. 63 of his 216 yards were screens that Bush did all the work.
CAROLINA 20
CHICAGO 17
Summary
Here was another exciting game that came down to the last few plays. I am sure everyone was jumping on the Bears wagon early in this game, they came out hot after their big upset over Indy with a blocked punt for a TD and Kyle Orton perfect through the first quarter. Of course, everyone Cinderella story crashes to Earth soon and the better team took over, and that was the Panthers behind a heavy dose of Jonathon Stewart. Two unanswered scores made the difference in this game and after completing his first 8 passes Orton finished 19/32.
Panthers
We have our second confirmed stud rookie running back and that is Jonathon Stewart. Just 14 carries for 77 yards and two touchdowns should earn him a few more touches down the line and should get him to be the featured back. After watching a video package today talking about the resurgence of Jake Delhomme this morning I am now convinced, he's the same mediocre QB he always was.
Bears
This year is just a repetition of last year where they Bears stunk up the place and scored most of their points on defense. Well the D scored once and the offense limped into the endzone behind a McKie 1-yard run. Yeah, it was bad. This team needs a quarterback worse than the Vikings, and the Vikings need one badly.
BUFFALO 20
JACKSONVILLE 16
Summary
This one was exciting but ugly. The Jaguars needed this win coming off a tough loss last week and a whole bunch of bad things going on off the field. The team is 0-1, there starting RB got arrested, and their offensive line is pretty much all depleted, either by injury or gun shot wound. Things were going ok, not good, but ok through most of the game. The offense was anemic but the defense was solid and kept them right in the thick of things, a 16-10 lead. However, when your running game can't get anything going to grind out the clock it keeps teams in the game and the Bills were just better in the 4th quarter, which won them this game.
Bills
The Bills have beaten two 0-2 teams thus far this season, but both were playoff teams last year and the Jags are supposed to be in the Super Bowl hunt. Neither team are even close to their old selves but I won't take away from the Bills. No one gave them a thought going into this year and they are quietly 2-0. I am not sure how, but they are, even with a back-up QB as their starter and their star running back averaging 3 yards a carry. All that aside, kudos to the 2-0 Bills.
Jaguars
Where do they go from here? The Jaguars lost to two teams they were supposed to handle and now have the Colts, Texans, and Steelers on the horizon. Maurice Jones Drew had 7 carries for 17 yards so for those of you who drafted him early in your fantasy league I hate doing this, but I told you so. Garrard already has as many picks this season as he did all last year so there is absolutely no good points to the start of the Jaguars season.
SAN FRANCISCO 33
SEATTLE 30
Summary
And my suicide season is over as the 49ers upset the Seahawks in this exciting affair. O'Sullivan looked great out there and Isaac Bruce looked young again. The teams exchanged scores the entire game with no one ever leading by more than 7 in the 2nd half of the game. The noise didn't rattle this young team at all as O'Sullivan stayed poised, Frank Gore was solid and Joe Nedney put the game winning field goal in overtime right through the up rights and the 49ers have put the heavily favored Seahawks in a deep hole in the NFC West.
49ers
Wow, this team looked really good in a really tough road game. They are 1-1 and I still don't completely believe in the Cardinals yet. The 49ers won't win more than 8 or 9 games but that will be an accomplishment for them and maybe enough to sneak out of the NFC West.
Seahawks
Great news for the Seahawks as they definitely have their featured back in Julius Jones. Bad news is they have played terrible in back to back weeks and are quickly 2-0. Jones had 127 yards with a touchdown in this one but that excellent performance was counteracted by the defenses inability to stop a career back-up QB.
TAMPA BAY 24
ATLANTA 9
Summary
Warrick Dunn put it to his old team here with an early touchdown and the Bucs quickly went up 14-0 and with their defense that was all she wrote. Earnest Graham made a statement that he wants more carries with a 68 yard touchdown run and the world beating Falcons from last week did not make it to Tampa Bay this week.
Buccaneers
With plenty of off the field controversy Brian Griese stepped into this game and did admirably and exactly what the Bucs need. He didn't make an mistakes and he played a slow and steady game, letting the running backs carry the load and playing well enough to let his defense win the game. Maybe the Bucs can be the surprise team again and win the division back to back seasons.
Falcons
Michael Turner came back to Earth in this one and after breaking 200 yards against the Lions he has stuffed for just 42 yards. Poor Matt Ryan wishes all NFL teams were as bad as the Lions because he came back to Earth against a tough Buccaneers defense and had a really bad 13/33 performance with two interceptions. My boy from my town was bad, but he's still my boy.
NEW ENGLAND 19
NEW YORK JETS 10
Summary
Looks like the Patriots are going to be a bit more boring this season without Brady as they handed the ball off and took pressure off of young Matt Cassel. It worked for today as Bret Favre made plenty of classic Favre mistakes, he under threw a receiver badly for an interception and looked more like the playoffs Favre from last year than the guy who led the Packers to a big season. This game put many to sleep early but when they woke up the Pats were still unbeaten this year.
Patriots
16-0? Not likely but 2-0 is a start. The Patriots are using every piece of the puzzle they have to fill in for the injured MVP. Six different players got carries and the Pats handed it off 33 times. It worked this week but they need to put some more faith into Cassel because it will be Moss and Welker that win the big games, not Jordan and Faulk.
Jets
This team will only go as far as Favre will let them. He looked slow today and his passes were inaccurate at times and the whole team took after their leader. Thomas Jones was not the same guy who dominated last week and the defense did all they could but the Jets lost a big opportunity here losing to their rivals in the first week after the loss of Brady. Maybe it is karma for the guy who invented the Brian Pollad fan club.
DENVER 39
SAN DEIGO 38
Summary
What an amazing game this was for anyone who loves offensive showdowns. Cutler was slicing the Chargers defense apart and had three touchdown passes in the second quarter alone. When things were started to look ugly for the Chargers it was Rivers who answered back driving his team down the field to bring it close and than a huge mistake from Cutler who threw a pick inside the 10 yard line. Than Sproles broke out after the turnover giving the Chargers a 7 point lead with a bad interception. However, Cutler redeemed himself, ran the 2-minute drill and finished it off with a pass to stand out rookie Eddie Royal. Overtime right? Not with Mike Shannahan behind the clipboard. Maybe he didn't think he could win in OT or maybe he was drinking heavily and thought he was playing Madden but they put the game in the hands of a two-point conversion and it was Eddie Royal sealing the game with the conversion and the 38-37 win.
Broncos
It took guts to win this game and though I hated the call, it worked in the end and I suppose the ends justify the means. Jay Cutler brought his big boy game today with 350 yards and four touchdowns, by far the top performer of the week. Selvin Young got things going to open up for the pass and this was a shootout all day long. The Broncos are a fortunate 2-0 this season and are in the drivers seat early, a seat that was reserved for the Chargers.
Chargers
Who picked the Chargers to go to the Super Bowl? I did and they are 2-0 but before you go jumping off the wagon Chargers supporters remember that history repeats itself and I believe the Chargers were terrible in the first few weeks last season. Of course, that was before Jay Cutler turned into Tom Brady. It's early but unless LT steps up his game, it might be a long season. 2.6 yards a carry today for the phenom.
CARDINALS 31
DOLPHINS 10
Summary
This one got out of hand quickly behind Kurt Warner and Anquan Boldin. Warner was spectacular in this one putting the Dolphins away early and with the terrible Dolphins offense, there was no coming back. Boldin and Fitzgerald were both unbelievable and it was over quick enough to let young quarterbacks like Leinart and Henne get some more experience, even though it didn't matter.
Cardinals
Kurt Warner starting was the best decision this team could have made. This offense is all of a sudden one of the best in the NFC with two blowout wins. The one downer for the team is the fact that with a big lead Edgerrin James could not get things going to put the game away but against a team like the Dolphins it doesn't matter much.
Dolphins
Well the Dolphins are not being remade under the football savior Bill Parcells and I am not surprised. This team struggled on defense and on offense and there was no bright spots. Sure Henne had a good percentage but it was against a team that was already sure they won and it is going to be a long season where the Dolphins could make another run at 0-16.
Wrap Up
That is it for my week 2 wrap up. Thankfully I got the chance to write this and not pay attention to the Browns/Steelers game. Good thing I picked Braylon Edwards in the second round this year. If I got points for dropped passes I would own my league. Unfortunately, dropping the ball is a BAD THING and he is killing me. Looking forward to Monday night for my Birds!
Did you watch the Detroit-Green Bay game? For a game that was not close, it sure looked like Detroit led in the fourth quarter.
Next time at least read the game summary before commenting on the game.

Lions never even close? They took a ONE point lead in the 4th...before they blew it
Posted By: What? (Guest) on September 14, 2008 at 11:53 PM
i guess the dolphins are so bad they dont even deserve their own little avatar logo do they :P
Posted By: haha (Guest) on September 15, 2008 at 12:01 AM
Forum trolls have fewer typos than you. Not to mention the fact that you obviously just looked at the score and stats for the GB game, unless you actually consider the Lions coming back from being down 21-3 to take the lead in the 4th "garbage points".

And what about the fact that the giants D was putting pressure on the QB all game. Tuck is an absolute monster. Give credit where it's due. They are the Super Bowl Champions.
Posted By: Stepnen (Guest) on September 15, 2008 at 04:09 AM
Other than that SD and Denver game.... The Packers game was the best game of the week. It was a completely nuts 4th quarter
Posted By: Guest#2107 (Guest) on September 15, 2008 at 07:31 AM
Yeah, seriously, did you watch the Lions game? It was CRAZY! Tuck is a monster.. that Giants D line must go 10 pro bowlers deep, I swear to God. I'm a Pats fan and that line ate us alive in the Super Bowl. Tuck, Osi and Strahan humped Brady more than Giselle. Anyways, the Patriots are looking pretty nasty... that was Matt Cassel's first start since high school so if he manages to improve over the course of the season, look out because until proven otherwise, the Patriots are going to be contenders.

I am gonna give Ken a pass here considering it was most likely done in 20 minutes after the games. Better step up your game next week and get off the Packers junk on stop hating on the Giants.
Posted By: Guest#7290 (Guest) on September 15, 2008 at 10:00 AM
Thankfully you didn't have to pay attention to the Steelers/Browns game? THANKFULLY?! Dude, you're a fucking FOOTBALL columnist! Pay attention to the awful Jets/Pats game, will you? Skip out on the Steelers, huh? Why? Why why why. Nice column, too, you had me enthralled until you basically said 'fuck that Browns game.' Was it because of the Browns? If that's the case, fine, but just don't come off all like 'Up the Steelers asses.' Jag-off.
Posted By: John Rodgers (Guest) on September 15, 2008 at 10:32 AM
You'd think if the Dolphins were looking to change their image, they could find a whole bunch of better options than a Bengals logo.
Posted By: Jeff (Guest) on September 15, 2008 at 10:33 AM
Thanks for skipping the Pittsburgh game, I mean that, because you just would have bashed them anyway. Keep that Philly bias going.
Posted By: Thanks for Nothing (Guest) on September 15, 2008 at 11:00 AM
Dude, if you're gonna write a weekly NFL wrap-up, at least invest in NFL Sunday Ticket so you can see what's going on in the games. I learned more from Sportscenter this morning than your recaps. Ignoring Browns/Steelers, which turned out to be a pretty interesting game? Totally getting the story wrong on Packers/Lions? Seriously, accuracy is important.
Posted By: Jeff Modzelewski (Registered) on September 15, 2008 at 12:03 PM
I know it's been said but yeah the lions took the lead late kitna threw two pick sixes to lose the game

ken ur a idiot u know nothing about football ur a moron
Posted By: me (Guest) on September 15, 2008 at 01:26 PM
the same thing was said about the giants last year and the won the superbowl they havent played anybody they arent that good.well its idiots like u that fuel the fire in the giants they like it when all u so called experts label them the underdog or they havent played any body.so waht u might the lost to dallas twice last year but the cowboys proved what kind of team they are in the playoffs so keep writing that the giants are no good im a die hard giants fan have been for years im glad that u idiots keep it up cause ur only fueling the fire that burns in them moron
Posted By: Guest#2397 (Guest) on September 15, 2008 at 01:31 PM
hey Ken I was gonna blast you for your incompetent lions/packers statements but many have already beat me to it. how does a writer from 411 get fired? I would think making shit up would do it.
Posted By: Adrian (Guest) on September 15, 2008 at 01:39 PM
Ok this was a bad column I reread it now and I messed up twice, once on the logo and once on the Packers game. However, a few quick things. There are things called "deadlines" and since this was a last minute thing i had to have it in by 11:00 PM. Due to a computer issue I did not start til 10:00 PM, point one. Why didn't I touch on the Steelers game? Because it didn't end until well after 11 you numbnuts. For those who would call a 48-25 game close please do, because last time I checked winning by 23 points is a BLOWOUT. Invest in Sunday ticket? I do asshole, but unfortunately I live inside what is called time, I am not Dr. Manhattan I cannot control time and watch 8 football games live at the same time.
All things aside, I need to do better than this but issues a side, its not bad for having less than an hour to write it (plus I was spending time with a FEMALE Sunday and did divert 100 percent attention to how many flies Aaron Rodgers swatted away during the 4th quarter). This was bad and it will be better next time when I have time.
I apologize for the one mistake that I am getting blasted for. But i do not apologize for telling the Giants fans to take that game with a GRAIN OF SALT. Reread the the statements I made again numbnuts
"I am reserving judgment on this team until they play some real competition."
I didn't know that reserving judgment meant shitting on a team, I guess our definitions just differ.
If you are all that pissed at me for this and think I don't know football how about you bet on the games I give you in the Office because I am 16 for 20. So you all bitch about me not knowing football I am going to go take a bath in money.
Finally, the Packers/Lions game was the 2nd most exciting game of the week? I guess that means a blowout outranks an overtime shootout with a giant underdog winning, I guess that is boring. And coming back from 15 points down in the fourth quarter puts me to sleep too. All good points.
One more time I am running out of characters, I am sorry for my one glaring error and I will do better, but this is for all you fair weather bashers out there: get a girlfriend.

I'm not a big fan of Delhomme either & as much as I hate 2 say this & I hate 2 say it as a Bucs fan... The Panthers r my Superbowl pick. It sounds crazy! there r better teams right now & I'm not picking them because they came back twice either. I just think it's time. It's really not all that out there if u think about it. Look at the Giants last year. Who thought they'd win the Superbowl when they started 0-2? or when they were demolished by the Vikings? when the playoffs began? when their road 2 the superbowl went through Dallas?
Remember their old nickname from the '04-05 season... THE CARDIAC CATS! Believe it folks! I hate saying it but they're back!
PEACE!

Ken, being an internet writer (for www.bleacherreport.com - cheap plug) I know how it can be a challenge to write on such a tight deadline.
Thanks for showing Philly some much needed love. They should whip the overrated Cowboys tonight. Ryan's my boy too, he'll be alright.

Hey The Bomb I can't disagree with your feelings. I mean what can you say about a team that goes 2-0 to start the season WITHOUT their star player. Steve Smith returns next week.
Posted By: Ken Schmidt (Registered) on September 15, 2008 at 07:20 PM
I don't know what's worse: the article or the writer's retorts to those who slammed him.
The internet cliches were the worst. "People are insulting me so I'll say I was with a FEMALE! I'm insulting them by saying that they must all be male losers without g/fs and I have a life and they don't!"
That's pretty weak. First of all, a lot of people have g/fs and second of all not everyone who watches football and checks out websites online are men. You agreed to do a weekly article on the NFL. So you shouldn't be busy on Sunday if you have a deadline. It's your own fault for choosing to entertain someone while you had work to do.
If you had a computer problem then that's fine. But the "FEMALE" thing is a weak excuse. If you have scheduling conflicts then don't do the article.
Also, the Packers/Lions game was great. Lions were crushed, they made an amazing comeback and then the Packers scored a lot in the span of a few minutes to make it look like a blowout. It's not a new thing for a team to lose by a lot in a game that was actually close because they had to take chances near the end of the game.
Even with a time crunch you still should be able to read general summaries of games to get the most basic information. Maybe you need to split up your article and do half of the games in one article and the other half along with the Sunday and Monday night games in a second one. That's something you should take up with the people in charge. Because it'd be better to have two well-informed articles with a few recaps a day late than to have one article that has a lot of stuff written about games you clearly never saw any of.
All in all, you need to drop the attitude. People are going to criticize you. It happens to all writers. Learn to roll with the punches instead of throwing out childish insults to everyone who who has negative feedback.
As a football fan and a woman you've offended me with your elementary antics, Mr. Schmidt. Grow up yourself before you start tossing out those insults.

I agree with Monica. You're a writer, deal with the criticism (particularly since it was all correct). That response was over the top and I think you should apologize to the readers of this column for making an error. Excuses and insults are no way for a professional to handle themselves.

well, keep in mind, this site is not a paying gig, so technically he's not a professional, unless he writes for another website and does get paid, at which point, the poor quality of this article maybe doesn't matter to him.
But, Ken, you wrote a bad article, and whether you have a life or not really has nothing to do with the fact that you wrote a poor article and it was posted for everyone to see. While you were not paid, I would assume that by posting this for many to see, you would attempt to put your best foot forward and be as informed as possible.

This site isn't a paying gig, but that isn't an excuse to turn in a half-assed performance. And it's definitely not an excuse to rip into your readers in this way. I've been writing off and on here at 411 for 6 years. I've made mistakes, and I've owned up to them. I've also had arguments with some of my readers. However, ad-hoc insults are pointless and have no place.
Yes, the Packers/Lions game ended up being a blowout, but you were 100% wrong to say it was never even close. The Lions were up halfway through the fourth quarter before the game got out of hand for the second time. You obviously just looked at the score and stat sheet without paying attention to the game. You were wrong. Admit that.
Second, if you couldn't write about the Browns/Steelers game due to a deadline, just say so. Your comments made it seem like you chose not to watch the game, not that reviewing it wasn't an option.
Third, don't hide behind the fact that you were with a "female" on Sunday. I'm married with a 9 month old son. When I write something for 411, I put 100% into it. When I used to do news columns, I took a lot of time to make sure that they were good.
Again, the fact remains that anyone watching Sportscenter could have gotten more information and better analysis than you gave. You compounded the problem by insulting your readers and generally being an asshole instead of owning up to your mistakes, or at least keeping your mouth shut.

I have to agree man. You so blew it with the Lions/Packers breakdown. Lions actually took the lead late in the 4th. Kitna threw 3 INTs over four offensive plays, two of which were run back for TDs. To say it wasn't close and was boring is ridiculous. Garbage points? So garbage points consist of getting back in the game and claiming the lead? RIDICULOUS.

Wow....get the story wrong on a few things and then insult your readers in a response to it. Did you really just bust out the "I was with a FEMALE, get a girlfriend" stuff?
That's ridiculous.
