The Office 10.24.08: NFL Week 8
Posted by Ken Schmidt on 10.24.2008
While Philadelphia is wrapped up in Phillies Phever the NFL world still spins so the Office will offer up their picks for the week as well as a quick crash course on how to play the spread.
Hey everyone welcome back to Week 8 of the NFL and another installment of the Office. I will take a few minutes early to reveal some of the things that seem to be confusing readers, mainly the idea of the ‘spread.' Because any idiot can tell me that the Redskins will beat the Lions this week we implement what is known as the spread, which basically gives the Lions eight points to start the game. It is pretty simple, just take the number (in this case –8) and subtract that from the Redskins final score. If the Skins win 27-20, when you subtract the eight the Lions actually get the win. I think the column would be really boring if we just pick straight winners, because there would be very little variation. That put aside let's get into the Sports Kid Units and then the Office.
Sports Kid Units
The Colts really let me down last week but I still had a fairly victorious week and improved to 49 out of 60 units (82%).
Chargers @ Saints
This game may have the Saints as the home team but in fact they will be playing this game in rainy, dreary old London. From what I know about London (my stepsister lived there for a few years) it rains, A LOT. Rain=a need for a good running game in the NFL and the Saints are without Reggie Bush. Although the Chargers continue to struggle the Broncos atrocious defense is still giving them a chance to take that division and this is a must win for the Bolts. I know people are saying this every week but I'll say it again, look for LT to break out here with his first monster game. 4 Sports Kid Units of the Chargers –3
Colts @ Titans
The Titans are the only team that is undefeated vs. the spread so far this season while the Colts have been a disappointment. Those who are waiting for Peyton to snap out of this slump will have to keep waiting as the Titans defense is known to swallow offenses whole, especially a team that is without their starting running back. Anyone seeing a theme here? I love to bet against a squad that is without one of their essential weapons and against a tough defense. 6 Sports Kid Units on the Titans –4
The Office
A few people made a little ground on Melissa Fox last week but she remains 9 games above .500 and the only one having a successful season. I finally had a solid week but still sit just atop Lealos for last place (only because he missed a week). Atleast, I have the 411 in my sights, as well as my Coast 2 Coast Sports Report partners the Rizz and Sean Garmer.

Suicide
Dan Owen's pursuit of perfection continues this week. Last week he had to sweat out another game, this time it was the Browns miss of a long field goal giving the Redskins the victory. Dan survived the last two weeks by the hair of his chin. This week it is going to be the Jaguars against the Browns that Dan rests his hopes of perfection on. If you still have the Redskins in your suicide league, they are the easiest pick this week. If you used the Skins already the Jets and Texans are safe picks, or follow Dan's course and go with the Jaguars.
Time To Punt
The World Series is heating up and I can't really be to excited about football. Philadelphia, usually dominated by football, is all Phillied up for the World Series and very little is being talked about the Eagles important showdown with Atlanta. I really think that 8.5 is way to high for that game and I would go with the Falcons to cover if I didn't hate using Sports Kid Units against the Eagles.
