Sports Kid Rankings 1.10.08: NHL Week 15
Posted by Ken Schmidt on 01.10.2008

Well the Sports Kid is finally back on track with each of my columns up and running. Let me take a second to talk about the All-Star starters, for those who don't know here are the starting lineups.
East:
Crosby
LeCavalier
Alfreddson
Markov
Chara
Brodeur

West:
Datsyuk
Zetterberg
Iginla
Lidstrom
Phanuef
Luongo

Usually I take this time to complain about how stupid the fans are with their voting and how they made the wrong choices but really I can't disagree with any of their picks. As much as I hate Sid the Kid he is the number one player people want to see. I would have preferred to see Ilya Kovalchuk in over Alfredsson but I don't mind seeing the best player on the best team in the East in the all-star game as a starter so no complaints there. In the West three Red Wings are starting, which is fair considering how they are dominating the NHL right now. I mean the Western Conference is the dominant conference in hockey and the Red Wings absolutely own everyone so I am not stunned by any of this. For the first time ever I am not second guessing any all-star starters this year, GOOD JOB FANS!

Climber of the Week Philadelphia Flyers & Pittsburg Penguins +11
Diver of the Week Colorado Avalanche -10

Ranking (previous) Team Commentary Record

Still nothing interesting to report here because the Red Wings just own everybody. They absolutely deserve half of the starters in the All-Star game and hell even Chris Osgood deserves a chance to play. No one can stand on even ground with them…. Yet. 33-8-3
2 (2)
Another reason for Ilya Kovalchuk getting into the All-Star starters over Alfreddson would be the fact that I would love to see the best line in hockey: Spezza, Heatley, and Alfredsson together on the big stage, but than again the time Spezza lost this season should keep him out of the big one. 27-10-4
3 (8)
No doubt Evgeni Nabokov makes the All-Star game which should ruin his consecutive start streak. I don't think that counts though. 23-12-6
4 (5)
Vancouver should be at the All-Star starting goaltenders feet for getting them into the top 5 this year because without Luongo this team would be hovering around the ten spot and barely out of the playoffs. Instead they are winning the top division in the West and Roberto is going back to the All-Star game. 24-14-4
5 (7)
The Devils continue to win games and Marty Brodeur is continuing to prove why I think he is the best goalie EVER. That's right I am a diehard Flyers fan and would talk trash on Marty all day if he was playing in Philly and my seats were behind the net but deep down, I know he is the best out there. Someone argue with me please, I dare you. 24-15-3

What a difference two weeks make. They win the always fun outdoor hockey game and pretty much have dominated. I hate moving them all the way up here and I hate the fact Sidney Crosby is the face of the NHL right now, but the fans don't lie, he dominated all other players in votes this year. 24-16-2
7 (9)
The Flames are one of those pesky teams that I am not sure of how, but they keep winning games. Jerome Iginla is having the best year of his career since his Hart Trophy season, he is playing damn well this year and deserving of that All-Star start.. 22-15-7
8 (3)
Dallas is beginning to slowly descend out of contention for the West Conference and even are losing the division battle to the Sharks. Dallas is the only team I can't really pick an All-Star reserve from. I am guessing Sergi Zubov. This has not been a good new year for the Stars though, they have lost 3 of 4 games in 2008, even though all four were against good teams, the Wild and the Red Wings. 24-16-4
9 (12)
Remember a few weeks ago where I was happy that the Canadian teams were struggling this year? Now 3 teams from the North are in the top 10. As far as All-Stars from the Habs other than Markov the starter, Kovalev has an outside chance but it looks like just the defensemen for the Canadians this year. 21-13-8
10 (6)
We all know that I am a fan of the Wild this year but they really need to pick up the slack in 2008 because they won't be the playoff team I hope they will be if they have to work from the 5 seed. Marion Gaborick is a shoe in for the All-Star team. 23-17-2
11 (13)
The Blues continue to cause some trouble in the Western Conference, they really are continuing to surprise. Paul Kariya will be a definite All-Star for his new team. 21-14-5
12 (23)
I knew it was a matter of time before the Flyers picked it up, so I am happy with them again. They have been handling bad teams but still struggle against the same squads, like the Devils and the Canadians. The Flyers should send two reserves to the All-Star game in young gun Mike Richards and former All-Star MVP Danny Briere. 21-15-4
13 (15)
The Ducks are a good team again which is not good for the rest of the NHL, they will send Chris Pronger to the All-Star game atleast, maybe Chris Perry too, who deserves it. 22-17-6
14 (4)
The Avs take a crippling 10 spot drop to the middle of the pack and losing Ryan Smyth sure isn't helping. Joe Sakic might be an All-Star this year for nostalgia's sake but I think Paul Statsny deserves it more. 22-17-3
15 (24)
I knew it was a matter of time before the Coyotes made a push. It might not be their year to make the playoffs but they have a lot of talent and their goaltending is spectacular. Shane Doan should get the nod for his squad this year but Bryzgalov sure has played great. 22-18-1
16 (10)
The Canes could be in danger of missing the playoffs this year if they don't pick it up, they have the star power but they aren't producing. They should send Eric Staal to the All-Star game but I would love to see Rod Brindamour go instead. 22-19-4
17 (11)
The Bruins are disappointing this year too, the offense just is inconsistent but the city of Boston probably doesn't care at all right now. Chara should be there only rep. 21-17-4
18 (19)
The Islanders swap spots with the Rangers, however just like in Boston, no one in New York cares because Eli stopped playing like Eli and the Giants are alive. The Islanders really don't deserve an All-Star but since everyone gets one I am guessing they send Mike Comrie. 20-17-5
19 (18)
The Rangers slide continues as they drop one spot the past two weeks and I absolutely love it. Jagr is a shoe in for all-star and I think Lundquvist should go as well to back up Marty. 20-18-5
20 (26)
The Predators have played decent and could make a sneaky playoff appearance as the eight seed, also known as the sacrificial lamb spot this year. I am guessing Marek Zidlicky for the All-Star rep from this squad, who really doesn't deserve one. 21-19-2
21 (25)
I am still kicking myself for not getting Rick Nash for my fantasy team. He should make the All-Star game but Pascal LeClaire definitely will. 19-18-6
22 (14)
The incredible run of the Sabres ended thanks to the outdoor game against the Pens and they have slipped ever since. They will probably send Campbell as their lone rep in the All-Star game. 19-18-4
23 (16)
The Blackhawks will definitely send rookie standout Patty Kane to the All-Star game but former Flyer Patrick Sharp might just go too. 19-19-4
24 (20)
The Thrashers are really bad defensively, all the offense in the world couldn't save this team. Kovalchuk is going to the All-Star game and you might just see Marion Hossa too. 21-22-1
25 (27)
Every team has to be represented at the All-Star game? So who do the Oilers send? Whoever it is it will be there first appearance. Shawn Horcoff will most likely go but I think Ales Hemsky is the better player. Either way it is one of the two. 19-21-4
26 (21)
Olli Jokinen will represent this joke of a team, but after that please trade him so he can play on a good team for the first time in his career. 19-21-3
27 (22)
Well the Maple Leafs really helped me out by getting the Flyers back on track. Mats Sundin will go for the Leafs this year, like always, he is there only star player. 16-18-8
28 (29)
Another spot in the right direction for the former Kings of the number 30 spot. Alex Ovechekin has been quiet this year so I hope he makes some noise when he gets selected to the All-Star game because there was once a time I was made people thought Sid the Kid was better than him, now I really can't argue with it. 17-20-5
29 (28)
Anyone understand why the Lightning are so bad this year? I mean they are terrible. St. Louis might go to the All-Star game but LeCavalier is really the only deserving Lightning player. 16-22-5
30 (30)
Funny that even though the Kings are by far the worst team in the NHL, they really do deserve two All-Stars, Brown and Kopitar. 15-27-2
