Sports Kid Rankings 1.17.08: NHL Week 16
Posted by Ken Schmidt on 01.17.2008

The All-Teams are complete. I have some complaints but that can be said for every year but overall it is not so bad. I can't believe LeClaire didn't make it as a goaltender from the Blue Jackets after what he has done to make that team no longer a joke, but the Western Conference goaltending position is deep. I mean Nabokov is unbelievable, Luongo who isn't even playing is still one of the best, and Manny Legace is making the Blues a playoff contender. My only complaint about the goaltending is Chris Osgood. Now here come all the skeptics "Chris Osgood's numbers are amazing, you preach him all the time, what is wrong with you?" Let me explain. First of all the Red Wings entire team could be All-Stars, Chris Osgood rarely has to do much for a shutout. His GAA average is under 2.00 because he gets 16 save shutouts. The Red Wings could probably compete with and maybe beat the Eastern Conference All-Stars right now. Chris Osgood's numbers are deceiving but I am glad that Hasek is finally warming the bench and should be on his way out the door as the most overrated goalie in the history of hockey. That's right I said it. The guy sold his soul to the devil and just flops around the crease without looking for the puck and it hits him. As a goalie I am always offended when people talk about Hasek as one of the best goalies ever. If I pulled that garbage I would be off my team, when I don't play a solid European Butterfly style I get yelled at on the bench by my Russian Goaltending coach. My spine is not a slinky so I have to look for the puck. Enough complaining about goaltending though, let's get to the rankings.

Climber of the Week Anahiem Ducks +8
Diver of the Week Calgary Flames -7

Ranking (previous) Team Commentary Record
1 (1)
My question is, are the Thrashers a good team or did the Red Wings just take the night off? Either way they still dominant the NHL and are getting closer and closer to being the earliest lock for the President's Cup ever. The number one spot is reserved even after a 0-2-1 week. 33-10-4
2 (2)
And Ottawa's strangle hold on the number two spot remains even after a win over the Red Wings. The Sens play in a weaker conference, in a weaker division, and just aren't as good even if they did get the head-to-head win which is why they stay at 2. 29-12-4
3 (3)
Evgeni actually got a breather for a single night, so history is over. The longest streak as starting at goaltender ends and now I am sure he will begin it once more. He might play every game for the rest of the season considering they have lost every game he hasn't started (1). 25-13-7
4 (5)
The Devils remain a step ahead of the red hot Penguins again. The Devils are back to playing their "we will win 2-1" style of hockey which trumps the Penguins "we need 5 goals to win" style. I would put money on the Devils to win the division. 26-15-3
5 (13)
Sure hockey is one of the ultimate team games but right now the Ducks are proving what a difference one player makes. They went from bottom of the pack to top 5 since the return of Scott Niedermeyer. Even though he is one of the best players in the world I still think it was more of a mental change than his impact. Either way they are scary again because like they proved last year, this team is built for the playoffs. 25-17-6
6 (6)
The Penguins are still red hot, but like most teams in the NHL, the ice eventually cools down the heat. The Penguins are a young gunner team, and in the past that style proves to even out, I expect the Pens to drop soon and a more solid team like the Flyers, Canadians, or Canes up. Plus I have seen Ty Conklin play before, he either sold his soul to Hasek for luck or isn't the same Ty Conklin the Oilers released. 26-16-3
7 (10)
That Wild team is still staying quiet and hovering in the top 10 teams. They regained the division lead which would guarantee them at least one home ice playoff matchup. I am still not sleeping on this team. 26-17-2
8 (9)
The Canadians continue their solid play without any real star scorers. Higgins, Plekanic, and Kovalev are playing great hockey and their defense is stellar. This is another team I would not sleep on to make a solid playoff run. I still doubt they will bring a cup back to Canada though. 23-14-8
9 (4)
The Canucks are just the most recent team to climb to the top of the Northwest division and than fall behind the Wild. They join the Avs and Calgary who seem to do it on a regular basis. 25-17-4
10 (14)
Colorado continues to play inconsistent hockey. I just don't see this team making much noise other than hanging with the Wild all season and than getting bounced in the first round. There scoring is inconsistent and their goaltending is mediocre. 25-18-3
11 (12)
The Flyers are still playing inspired hockey and are quite possibly the deepest team in hockey. They are getting scoring from their third and fourth lines now and Jeff Carter and Scott Hartnell are heating up. That goes along with the return of Gagne and the awaiting of Lupul to return. This team has so much young talent even the fourth line should be a scary unit. I expect the Flyers to have the best chance to make a play at the Devils for the 2 spot in the East. 23-15-5
12 (8)
The former mighty continue to fall hard going from 3 to 12 in just 2 weeks time. The Stars have just 3 wins in their last 10 games. 25-18-5
13 (11)
Manny Legace is good for two things on every team he plays for. He wins and has the coolest name in hockey. I wish my name was Kenny Legace, I would get so many chicks with that name. 22-15-6
14 (7)
If you count overtime losses as a loss the Flames are actually below .500. With the tough division they play in I don't think they will make the playoffs. 22-17-8
15 (15)
The Coyotes continue to bide their time in the middle of the pack but I expect them to continue their surprising run to the top 10 soon. Did I mention I love watching young teams with solid goaltenders play? Go Coyotes! 24-20-1
16 (21)
What a week for the Blue Jackets as the Red Wings get cold they heat up. Even though a hot streak into the playoffs would most likely only make them fodder for the Wings or Sharks anything can happen in the NHL playoffs when you have a good goalie. 22-18-6
17 (18)
And than there is the Islanders who no one talks about. They still have less than average amount of games played and are playing decent hockey. Don't be surprised to see the Islanders make a move towards the playoffs. However, their success really rests on the shoulders of an inconsistent Rick DiPietro. 22-18-5
18 (17)
The Patriots are still unbeaten. Until the Super Bowl is over I will take the approach everyone in Boston is with the Bruins and not care about them. 22-18-4
19 (24)
The Thrashers are still that team that no one wants to play because they can rattle off 5 goals any game. Just ask Chris Osgood. 23-22-2
20 (20)
Chris Mason or Dan Eliis? Just pick one already! 22-19-4
21 (19)
No one in the beginning of the season expected the Rangers to be in the bottom 10 at the half way point. They added so much talent around Jagr and it isn't helping him at all. 21-20-5
22 (16)
The Hurricanes started their All-Star break early. A team that should be towards the top of the East has won just 3 in their last 10. 19-18-4
23 (22)
Poor American goalies, they keep getting put on mediocre teams. The faces of American goaltending right now are beginning to become forgotten. 19-18-6
24 (23)
What was once a Cinderella story comeback team is now the same old Blackhawks they have been since the mid 90s. They continue to get young talent but continue to be a bad team. When will we see one of the best franchises in NHL history become a force again? 20-21-4
25 (25)
The Flyers second overall pick in 2007 draft, 19 year old James Van something something better end up being a good player because when I think of Sam Gagner on the Flyers I get happy. He would have fit in perfectly. 21-22-4
26 (28)
Don't look now but the Caps are playing some good hockey right now. Alexander the Great could get a chance to be a solid spoiler this year if nothing else. 19-21-5
27 (26)
Flyers play the Panthers Wednesday night and by the time you read this is will most likely have happened already. How much money says the red hot Flyers lose to the terrible Panthers to stop their run at the Devils for division lead. 20-22-4
28 (27)
Could Mats Sundin be one of the big names to move at the trade deadline? He isn't as young as he used to be but he still has a lot of goals left in his tank. The question is would he be able to go anywhere else because he has been a Leaf so long I can't picture him in any color but blue. 17-21-8
29 (29)
Disappointing. 17-24-5
30 (30)
Even though they are the worst team in hockey they have enough goal scorers to be able to be a solid spoiler this season. They also went 3-0 this week. 18-27-2
