Sports Kid Rankings 2.21.08: NHL Week 21
Posted by Ken Schmidt on 02.21.2008

To say the least, I have been better, and I have rarely been worse. To start I am waiting for my ride to the hospital because I hurt my back last night playing hockey and now I can't move. Second, the Flyers are absolutely terrible and since no one cares about me I will talk about what is looking to be one of the worst collapses in hockey. Going into the All-Star break the Flyers were alone in first place with games in hand on the trailing Devils and Penguins. Than they started losing. They did not come out to play against a weaker Washington team in the afternoon. Ok, that made sense afternoon games are tough. Than they lost two to a weaker Rangers team but in fairness they were red hot. Than to the Penguins. Ok we own the Penguins we needed to get back on track and nope, John Stevens could not get his team fired up for what could have been the biggest game of the season. Win that game and they are back on track, lose it and they are feeling terrible going into a stretch of games against really weak teams. No one skated hard, there was no sense of urgency and they played not to make mistakes, which is just asking to lose. With the losing streak at 4, they went into the Island and lost, than lost to Tampa, and have lost every game since and are up to 8 straight. John Stevens needs to be fired because of many reasons. A. no one is ever fired up to play and B. he is to loyal to his former players, as he was the coach of the AHL Phantoms when they won the Calder Cup. He is playing Jim Vandameer every game who is detrimental to the team when on the ice with turnovers and poor defense and new blood like Claude Giroux are just getting their chance to play with injuries instead of Riley Cote who does nothing positive for his team. Stevens needs to go before the Flyers slip out of the playoffs. Let's get to the rankings where they is a new number 1!

Climber of the Week New York Islanders +5
Diver of the Week Philadelphia Flyers and Colorado Avalanche -5

Ranking (previous) Team Commentary Record
1 (3)
The Stars are the hottest team in the NHL with 9 wins in their last 10 games, including a shut out of the Red Wings which is mainly the reason they got the number one spot. I said going into that game "the Stars will jump the Red Wings in my rankings if they win." A 1-0 score later and we have a new number one. 37-21-5
2 (1)
The Red Wings are to cold right now to remain atop the Rankings, like they have been for most of the season. Things are looking worse as even though they ended their losing streak they lost Nicky Lidstrom in the process. 42-15-5
3 (2)
The Sens drop a spot for their current cold streak but they righted the ship with a good trade to bring in Cory Stillman and a good performance against a Flyers team that actually came to play against them. They still have the lead in the Eastern Conference but only via a tiebreak. 35-20-5
4 (8)
The Canadians got themselves right back into striking distance for that top spot in the East as the teams from the North look to make it a great race down the stretch because being number 1 makes a world of difference over being number 4. 33-19-9
5 (6)
The Wild look to have ended the division carousel as they continue to maintain lead in the Northwest which is now at five points, which could be good enough for now to keep them feeling safe as the 3 seed in the West. 34-21-5
6 (5)
The big race in the East is the Sens/Habs but right behind the race for the 1 seed is the race for the 2 as the Pens right now are in a dead heat with the Devils. However, with Sid the Kid's return looming I think they have enough to make a late season push and get themselves in a better position going into the playoffs. If the season ended today the winner of the Atlantic would play the Rangers while the losers get the Canadians. Yeah, it means a lot. 34-21-5
7 (7)
The Devils took care of the Sens this week so they still are right where they need to be in the division and their tough schedule gets easier after they play the Sharks Wednesday night. 34-21-5
8 (4)
Not a good week for the Sharks because they have dropped away from the Stars due to four straight losses. They still are in ok shape to be competitors this season but they need to right the ship quickly before things get really bad and they have to play the playoffs on the road. 31-20-8
9 (9)
The Ducks stay put at the 9 spot which might be exactly where they stay all season. The Ducks can do some damage in the postseason with their stacked roster but they need to make it easier on themselves by staying right in the heart of the race. 33-23-7
10 (12)
So much for peaking at 11, the Predators are actually in the top 10! 32-23-7
11 (10)
The Flames are stuck looking up at the Wild, which is the way it should be most of the season. Now they need to fend off rivals the Canucks to get themselves in the playoffs. 30-22-8
12 (16)
The Canucks chose a good time to get hot as they shoot up four spaces and into a good spot for the playoffs, which for them, making it will be enough. The goaltending is back to where it should be but I am still distressed at Markus Naslund's drop off from NHL elite to average player. 30-22-8
13 (15)
The Bruins have been in line for the 8 seed or just out of the playoffs most of the season. It is going to be an uphill battle but they need to jump the Rangers for good and get themselves a comfortable spot in the race for the last spots. 30-23-6
14 (17)
I really didn't think the Rangers had what it took to turn it back on and get themselves into the playoffs after such a bad start but they surprised me and as we all know in the playoffs a great goaltender can win games and make a team get pushed as far as possible. 30-24-8
15 (19)
The Blues are not going to lay down and die as they are keeping an eye on the Flames and Canucks because with a good hot streak they can get themselves into the postseason. 28-22-9
16 (11)
Who knew the returns of all the stars would hurt the Avs as they drop out of the playoff race and now have a lot of ground to make up if they want to get in. 30-25-5
17 (14)
The Sabres have their eyes on Monday night when they will showdown with the Flyers in what could be the most important game of the season for both teams, the winner of that game should get themselves in the playoffs. 28-23-8
18 (13)
Everything I said about the Flyers in the opening is still in effect. The Flyers have the Sharks next who will be coming off a game the night before against Jersey so I am praying that means something, although for the win they will need to actually show up. 30-24-6
19 (18)
It looks like it might be over for the Coyotes as they have a lot of people to jump to have a prayer at the playoffs. 31-26-4
20 (25)
The Islanders don't have anything to play for which is making them much better, they right now are on a push to get out of the bottom 10. Maybe next week. 28-25-7
21 (21)
No movement this week for the Jackets but I am cheering for them to get out of the bottom 10. 27-26-9
22 (22)
The Hurricanes are taking steps in the right direction to get in the playoffs but whoever gets the 3 in the East will have it be tainted by how bad they actually are. 30-28-5
23 (20)
The Caps are cooling off at the wrong time which is no good for their playoff hopes. Ovechekin has 48 goals right now and there is still plenty of games left in the season so how many goals could he finish with? 60? 70? 28-26-6
24 (23)
The Blackhawks have way to many nights where they just can't score. Patrick Lalime has been a pleasant surprise this season but it still will be a disappointing ending for them. 27-26-6
25 (24)
Is it weird that the Thrashers averaged giving up a little more than 3 goals this week and that is a step up? Yeah its bad. 29-28-4
26 (26)
The Oilers still aren't playing horrible so they can hang their hats on that. There still will be a mess in Edmonton for a few years though. 27-29-5
27 (27)
Trade Olli Jokinen and trade him now! 27-29-6
28 (29)
If the I was the Lightning I wouldn't sell at the deadline because they still have the talent, it just has been a bad season. 25-28-6
29 (28)
This is a team I am looking to see how much they sell. We know some bodies are moving but who? 25-27-9
30 (30)
I wouldn't be surprised if the Kings either make a move to set themselves up to draft a goalie or sit back and get a goalie in free agency because we all know Labarbera and Cloutier will never get it done. 25-34-3
