I know a lot of people think the ECW Championship gets screwed over on pay-per-view - especially after the ten-second match it got at SummerSlam this past Sunday - but I crunched the numbers to show that it really hasn't gotten such a raw deal.
From Vengeance 2006 (the first pay-per-view after the ECW Championship was revived) up to Summerslam 2009, seven other championships have appeared regularly on pay-per-view: the WWE Championship, the World Heavyweight Championship, the Intercontinental Championship, the United States Championship, the WWE Women's Championship, the WWE Tag Team Championship, and the World Tag Team Championship. (Since the two tag titles have separate title histories even after the unification match at WrestleMania 25, the three Unified Tag Team Championship matches on PPV are counted towards both tag titles.)
Here's the numbers:
• The WWE Championship has been contested a total of 42 times, with an average match length of approximately 17 minutes; the longest match for this title lasted 35:55 (at No Way Out 2009), and the shortest match for this title lasted 6:33 (at No Mercy 2007).
• The World Heavyweight Championship has been contested a total of 42 times, with an average match length of approximately 16 minutes; the longest match for this title lasted 29:46 (at No Way Out 2009), and the shortest match for the title lasted 1:03 (at Extreme Rules 2009).
• The ECW Championship has been contested a total of 32 times, with an average match length of approximately 9 minutes; the longest match for this title lasted 24:42 (at December to Dismember 2006), and the shortest match for this title lasted 9 seconds (at WrestleMania 24).
• The Intercontinental Championship has been contested a total of 16 times, with an average match length of approximately 10 minutes; the longest match for this title lasted 17:36 (at Unforgiven 2006), and the shortest match for this title lasted 21 seconds (at WrestleMania 25).
• The United States Championship has been contested a total of 16 times, with an average match length of approximately 10 minutes; the longest match for this title lasted 13:49 (at The Great American Bash 2006), and the shortest match for this title lasted 5:24 (at Cyber Sunday 2008).
• The WWE Women's Championship has been contested a total of 18 times, with an average match length of approximately 7 minutes; the longest match for this title lasted 11:34 (at Unforgiven 2006), and the shortest match for this title lasted 3:13 (at WrestleMania 23).
• The WWE Tag Team Championship has been contested a total of 13 times, with an average match length of approximately 14 minutes; the longest match for this title lasted 20:13 (at Armageddon 2006), and the shortest match for this title lasted 6:29 (at Vengeance 2007).
• The World Tag Team Championship has been contested a total of 14 times, with an average match length of approximately 10 minutes; the longest match for this title lasted 17:17 (at One Night Stand 2007), and the shortest match for this title lasted 1:30 (at Night of Champions 2008). |
