Woke up this morning, da-da-da-da. Forgot my life wasn't a blues song.
Finished reading Alien Loves Predator. I've read the whole thing in like 3 days. Popped on a DVD to chill for the rest of the morning; Body Heat. Its a film noir from 1981. It's a re-hash of Double Indemnity but that is an awesome film to re-hash! Its like saying that Magnificent Seven is only 80% the movie of Seven Samurai. They're still both good. Body Heat benefits from the updated and racier storyline even if its still classic noir. I dug it. Its weird that I've never seen it before but hey, sometimes you just miss a movie.
After that I settled in to watch the start of series 2 of the Wire. Wow. Great opening two episodes. Taking the good stuff from series 1 and just layering in a whole new investigation BUT retaining everything from series 1. Its like instead of having a new series they just moved their net a little wider to incorporate the docks into the world they'd created of lawyers, cops and the projects. Its like: here's what's behind door number 2. For the win.
After that it was time to write the news column. Again, motivation was hard as tidbits were thin on the ground. That's two weeks in a row that very little has happened Wednesday for Thursday's news report. Its a good job I have the chart discussion, trailers and football to fall back on.
Early evening and I checked out 44 Inch Chest, which I did not enjoy. It seemed fine until they left Ray Winstone's character alone with the adulterer, which is where the trailer ends, and the movie just falls apart. Its like a series of bits and characters that never feels like an overall story. Bits of flashbacks sometimes work and stories being told by characters are good. I'm thinking Ian McShane's gambling story and especially John Hurt breaking down Samson & Delilah. But its not enough. I get so irritated with the movie that I order some pizza in for when the wife gets home.
Pizza is good but slightly cold because the roads are all covered in snow and the driver can hardly go at 15mph down our road because of the ice. I manage to watch an entire, but not very good, episode of Monty Python before he gets here. The only upside is the sheer amount of Gumby. Everyone loves Gumby. With the wife home I flip on to Sky Sports and check out Blues-Villa in the Carling Cup, which turns out to be a real ding-dong match. End to end with the players kicking each other in the air. A good cup tie. Blues win it late thanks to a total mis-hit by donkey centre forward Zigic. The match is somewhat overwhelmed by the crowd, which was excellent throughout before an unsavoury pitch invasion with flares to finish. There are some blues and villa fans that are just total scum. But I guess that applies to all teams. |
