Friday night I was informed by my lovely wife that I shouldn't get too drunk and come back late because we had to go to Liverpool on Saturday morning. I rolled in about 2am, which I thought was fairly reasonable. As my wife tells it I came in at 3am or later blind drunk. All lies. Mostly. Good night on Friday though. Mac celebrated his birthday in style and we were there in numbers to represent.
Saturday I woke up feeling a bit mouldy but that was soon rectified with a couple of ibuprofin, a mug of coffee and about an hour's sleep on the train. On arriving in Liverpool my extraordinary sense of navigation nearly took us right up to the hotel. I say nearly because my wife had to point out where it was as I was walking past it. Hey, I can't be perfect all the time! Seeing as the Adelphi wasn't allowing people in before 2pm (a bizarre concept that created a massive queue of people trying to get into their rooms at 2pm)we popped into the Irish pub (not themed) across the road for a couple of steak baguettes and a pint of Mann's Dark Mild. I chuckled at the TV that was chained to the wall. Nice security work on that one. After checking in we headed off to Goodison Park to watch Everton play.
The cabbies promise to get us "within spitting distance...if that's your want" didn't quite come to fruition but we were able to get close enough that we were in our seats before the players had come out. First half was pretty dire with only a few chances. Wigan, the opponents, did very little. Second half livened up a bit with Everton looking more likely to score and missing a string of chances. 0-0 at the end with Wigan being denied by Tim Howard in injury time. Everton really should have won but I enjoyed the game.
Afterwards I discover the true horror of Liverpool post-game. Throngs of people everywhere. No chance of getting a taxi or onto a crowded bus so we hoof it back into the city centre, which from Everton is a bit of a trek. Especially as the plan was to grab a taxi so we had no idea where we were. The old navigation skills kicked in and Maria has a keen eye for a landmark using the radio tower and church spires to get us back to the hotel.
We headed out later to Maria's friend Mhardie's 30th birthday party. Lots of crazy filipino antics like kareoke, organised troupe dancing, impromptu limbo competitions and heavy drinking. Good times. My wife was in a great mood. Went home happy.
We swung through Birmingham on way back scoring some sushi and such in Woktastic. Its amazing that my wife is Asian and yet I'm the one who knows how to use chopsticks. Just saying. We miss the 4pm back to the 'Grove and end up having to hang around Brum for 90 minutes or so. Cool German market on though so we mosied through that. By the time we got home Maria had just about enough energy to upload photos onto facebook while I watched the incredibly shit Fourth Kind movie starring Milla Jovovich. Urgh. Oh well, not everything can be good. I make amends by watching My Name is Earl for an hour before retiring.
I must book another weekend off soon! |
