I've finally honed my viewing into two shows for the time being. The Wire and Big Bang Theory. The Wire because its just so well written, shot and performed. I'm 2 episodes into series 4 now. Its very, very rare I get four series into anything. The last show I watched for 4 years was 24. And that was 4 and out. The Wire is just genius. Straight up. I was concerned that having lost several of the principle cast members at the conclusion of series 3 and what's more spread out the others across the city that the show just wouldn't be as good. As usual I was wrong. The characters are now so strong that any one of them (Herc, McNulty, Freamon, Prez) can carry whatever storyline they're in. And the writing is so good that the characters they interact with feel like real people. If anything the show is getting better. Which seemed impossible when they jettisoned a huge chunk of the major cast members at the end of series 3.
Big Bang Theory: I've started into series 2. I've got 6 episodes in. Its much funnier than series 1. The characters have been firmly established and are now developing. Penny, Raj and Sheldon have all made big steps this season and its really funny with it.
Both shows have got a great line in referencing things that happened beforehand to add in layers to the jokes/storyline. You can watch it straight up but knowing the background just gives you so much more. Both shows are just hugely rewarding to those who've seen all the previous episodes. Rewards for paying attention is the greatest gift of all on TV. |
