Its very rare I get hooked on a TV show. Far rarer is me getting hooked on a TV drama. Outside of the Sopranos I can't think of any. I loved 24 for a couple of years but it got silly.
Then HBO brought me the Wire. I don't even like cop shows normally. But the Wire is just above and beyond that. Its not even a cop show. There are cops on the show but as much time is spent to structuring a city around them. A living, breathing thing populated with real people, real drama and real situations. Some of the stories are rewarding, some heartbreaking but ultimately it all adds up to something greater than the sum of the parts. And the parts are all amazing. I guess you could call me a fan. When I sat down tonight to watch the final episode of the Wire I was sad, then happy as I realised how good the episode was then sad again as I watched the last Down in the Hole knowing that these characters would now forever be what I saw them doing right now. They could only move on from here in my imagination. And I was sad because I'll miss them. McNulty, Bunk, Omar, Bubbles, Kima, Daniels, Hauk, Carver, Marlo, Levy, even the dockers, the slingers, the school kids, the teachers, the lawyers, the prisoners and the politicians. Everyone who made this Baltimore live and breathe. I'll miss them all.
