Kalib Starnes released ... I'm surprised there is no thread about this "fight"
      #6072320 - 04/21/08 09:29 PM

Rightfully so I think. At least we get a couple kick ass gifs out of this fight.

Exactly...it's not like we were all talking about live as it happened in the UFC 83 thread.

Thanks for bringing it up though.

Well Newbs and Mikey always said it was me. They also said the dinosaurs died because I touch myself at night....

*Crys* I Can't take anymore lies!

But seriously, in Mikey's defense.. there's a forum outside of the mma section? Really? I thought there was a giant big gapping hole that just made this loud sucking noise that Huckaby (of all people) fixed by having a mma forum. And quite frankly (dear God help me for saying this) you should just thank the man, shut the hell up, and be on your way!

Yeah, I'm going to look through old threads that are several pages to see if something that *might* be talked about ...

Come on!!!

Either way, it deserved it's own thread. I laughed a lot, especially at this

I don't disagree that this subject is worthy of its own thread, I think my response was more to the thread title where you said "I'm surprised no one is talking about this 'fight'"

Well...we were talking about the fight, and the UFC 83 discussion thread was updated several times Sunday and yesterday. Those gifs were posted on Sunday (that's when I snagged one for my tasty new avatar). I myself posted a response early Monday that linked to the Yahoo! Sports story where they first announced Starnes had been released. I can't speak for CompletePlayer, but the point I was making was that people had been talking about this fight, so this thread title was kind of funny.

There, I made a change to the title, I think that is a bit better.

Plus I was more asking for comments about his release anyway, so we could point and laugh and say "Ha, loser" to him. Also, I was curious what people thought about it anyway.

My friend even said afterwards, "that's the last we'll ever see of this guy."

Here is Kalib's side of the story...not that it is going to garner him any sympathy from anyone, nor should it. I think anyway you slice it, the guy has no heart to fight even if you take his explanation at face value.

STARNES REQUESTED RELEASE

Criticized Canadian Calls UFC Contract ‘Most Oppressive’

By Mike Russell (gfn@thefightnetwork.com)

Kalib Starnes on Monday set out to clarify circumstances regarding his pending release from the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He countered a report from Yahoo! Sports’ Kevin Iole in which UFC president Dana White seemed to indicate the Surrey, British Columbia, native had been cut from his contract.

“He just doesn’t belong in the UFC, and after his performance the other night, he should consider a new line of work,” White said, referring to Starnes’ widely criticized effort against Nate Quarry at UFC 83: Serra vs. St. Pierre 2 on Saturday at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

Starnes told The Fight Network that he requested his release from the remainder of his UFC contract, which had been carried over from his appearance on “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series and ensured him three fights per year.

“[UFC matchmaker] Joe Silva told me that it usually takes a couple of days for their legal department to complete the paperwork and that he would send me all of the paperwork to indicate that my contract has been dissolved,” Starnes said. “Later on in the afternoon, after I had spoken to Joe Silva, a story was released by some reporter from Yahoo! in which Dana White said that he had released me from my contract. I received no documentation on that, and it came after I asked to be released.”

Starnes – who dropped a unanimous decision to Quarry and was booed by his fellow Canadians for failing to engage – called White’s comments unprofessional and inappropriate.

“In my opinion, it was inappropriate to make public statements regarding my character and my future and so on the way that he has, especially without having the courage and the respect to call me up and speak with me personally,” Starnes said. “All of these comments come from a man that has never had a fight in his entire life who claims to be the ultimate authority on fighting and courage. I couldn’t be happier than to be released from the most oppressive contract I’ve ever been under in my life.”

According to the American Top Team-trained fighter, injuries led to his switch from an offensive to defensive mode against Quarry. For a majority of the fight, Starnes back pedaled out of harm’s way and away from his opponent’s dangerous punches. A former challenger for the UFC middleweight championship, Quarry battered Starnes with leg kicks throughout the three-round bout.

“Right now, I have a broken foot [that] I sustained with the first kick I threw in the fight,” Starnes said. “My leg is purple and black from my knee up, I have a black eye, a sprained jaw, and he’s questioning my desire to fight? If that isn’t enough to satisfy him and the crowd, I can show them the medical report. I can barely walk. [Quarry] totally destroyed my thigh with those kicks. I’m sure a lot of people would rather see me suffer a traumatic brain injury and be rendered unconscious. That’s too bad. If that’s what they want, they’re paying the wrong guy $10,000 to get his brain smashed in.”

Starnes then invited White to walk a few feet in his shoes.

“Dana White wouldn’t stand and trade with a guy [like Quarry] who had an 80 or 90 percent knockout ratio with injuries like I had Saturday night,” Starnes said. “He wouldn’t cross the street for $10,000. I don’t have anything to prove to anybody. I’m not about to stand there and get smashed to pieces. After I knew my foot was broken, I was trying to back up and work off the jab and keep moving so I didn’t get knocked out.”

Rumors also surfaced Monday that Starnes had dropped a bombshell – that his performance was a direct protest to his pay rate and insurance that he would be let go from the remainder of his contract – on a Montreal radio show following his match with Quarry. Starnes called the rumors ludicrous.

“Any report or rumor that I came on any radio station to comment on the fight or circumstances surrounding the fight or in reference to the UFC or Dana White is completely false,” he said. “I’ve been back in Florida since Sunday, and it was Dana White who decided to come out and publicly attack my character, not the other way around. That’s the way he felt like he should go. Maybe he thinks that character assassination might prevent me from moving on and fighting for another organization or carrying on a career. If he thinks it’s appropriate to attack me, it isn’t.”

Apparently you can.. It's probably the same people who says all that "The guys who rip on you don't even train for fighting and have never fought" who was ripping him the last 2 weeks anyways.

I really don't see how people not training for fighting or fighting has something to do with some guy running around the ring "following his game plan". His game plan obviously wasn't working so he should've tried something else >.>

Just a random quote from Sherdog: "everybody did come down on you a lil hard , I diddnt mind the fight ,sure you diddnt do much and no offense to you but I really dont mind seeing a guy get beat on for 3 rounds running or not , this wassnt as bad as ppl made it out to be"

Not mentioning the spelling but anyways.. Can this really be a serious post? I mean wtf? He doesn't mind? I don't have to pay to watch UFC (it's on regular channels here in Sweden ) and I still was pissed after watching this crap. That it was on at about 04:30AM - 07:30AM doesn't really improve my mood after being awake for so long and getting that piece of crap in return

You mean normal logic and common sense applys in forums? When the hell did this happen? I mean unless 411 was filled with people like Pete and Highone when the hell did this happen here?

How douche bag do you have to be to get upset like this? "HOW DARE YOU NOT GIVE KALIB STARNES A HARD TIME!" I mean God forbid the guy just lost his job.

I mean I'm not Kalib Starnes fan. Hell I probably wouldn't piss on the guy if he was on fire. But I'm not gonna hackle those people who want to cut the poor guy some slack.

And what do you mean it's not fun to watch a fighter run away? I laughed my balls when Cro Cop ran like alittle scared bitch from Fedor. Hell I would enjoyed watching that for 3 rounds straight. Hell if he would screamed out for his mommy I would been in hog heaven.

So your saying if Sherk runs away from B.J. Penn for five rounds you won't be happy? (Better make that two.. and who knows with B.J. That might be a good tactic).

Starnes didn't lose his job. He claims to have asked for his release from an "oppressive contract". Why should anyone feel bad for him?

I think the point being made is that the same folks who ripped Starnes a new one after UFC 83 are kissing his ass simply because he took the time to post in the Sherdog forum. It's a classic example of someone talking shit behind a person's back and then acting cordial whenever face-to-face with that individual.

"The squeeze is worth the juice." - Forrest Griffin

"The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices, to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill and suspicion can destroy, and a thoughtless, frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all its own -- for the children, and the children yet unborn." - Rod Serling

"Death is but crossing the world, as friends do the seas; they live in one another still. For they must needs be present, that love and live in that which is omnipresent. In this divine glass they see face to face, and their converse is free, as well as pure. This is the comfort of friends; that though they may be said to die, yet their friendship and society are, in the best sense, ever present, because immortal." - William Penn

So how many people here would call Dana White a douche bag to his face and waste the opportunity to ask something relevant?

I mean it's just stupid to waste a opportunity like that to act like a fuck.

It would be like if I met Rampage Jackson. I'm not the guys biggest fans, but if I could get him to start talking about his old Pride days to find out some cute little fun facts I didn't know about before hand by kissing a little ass, I'd like to think I would. It gets getting a broken jaw or looking like a fuck to a guy who's really minding his own business.

Here I'll make it easier. Who here would call Bennette a crack head to his face?

So the first words out of everyones' mouth in meeting Ken Shamrock would be has than been?

Internet =/= to somebody's face

Kissing someone's ass on the internet - especially when it's undeserved (Kalib) makes no sense. The guy ran for 15 minutes and ripped off everyone who paid to see a fight.

He admitted he wasn't the better fighter so what's wrong with agreeing with him?

Wasn't he the guy who stopped his fight in TUF complaining of "broken ribs"? Were we to expect more from this douche?

I'm frankly appauled he was even given a contract to fight after "Fight Night".

I was a Starnes fan and stand behind him on this issue actually. I enjoyed his prior fights and he was a warrior in them beating Chris Leben.

It is obvious that he did what he did in protest of Dana White not paying the fighters enough for risking their lives.

He is correct and everyone in here drops their jaw every pay per view when an impressive fighter gives it his all and is left battered and bruised only to see he made 6,000 dollars for the fight.

All fighters on a PPV card should fall under a 20,000 dollar minimum with bonuses for spectacular action inside the ring.

Starnes is correct in that but he was under contract so was wrong to run and try to ruin the card in protest.

Well before the fight I thought he stood a fairly good chance to win.

Nate looked horrible fighting Pete Sell and like you said Starnes did have a big win over Leben.
I'm kind of looking forward to seeing Starnes next fight. I'm expecting him to be the new pariah of mma who's victories will bury anyone he beats.

Just imagine he if fought and beat Dennis Kang. I bet if you listed quietly enough you could hear Dana White laughing his ass off.

There's as much if not more talent at the middle weight division outside of the ufc as in it, so it's not like he won't have a chance to prove himself.

He'd make a nice last minute replacement for Ninja, I'd watch Phil Baroni brake Kalib's face.

Kalib has already proven himself. He has appeared on multiple UFC payperviews and has beaten Chris Leben.

He is a good fighter but this is not the way to get more money for your talents.

I understand why he did it and the reason was valid but it was not in the warrior tradition.

So in the end I have to shun the guy.

I do hope Dana opens up the purse strings and starts paying the pay per view fighters fair wage though.

Sorry, but I don't think beating Leben qualifies him for warriordom.

Risking their lives? Are they fighting in Iraq? I hate to tell you this, but these guys risk their lives more during the drive to the arena than they do during the fight. I'm not minimizing the fights themselves or minimizing what goes into preparing for a fight, but to make the statement that they are risking their lives is a little disingenuous.

Are you under the impression that fighters discover how much they are getting paid around the same time we do? I hate to point this out, but I’m pretty sure all the fighters know exactly what they will make before they walk into the cage. The fact that Starnes took his opportunity to fight and instead put on an abysmal performance and ruined a portion of a pay per view demonstrates his lack of character and lack of intelligence. This guy wasn’t protesting for other fighters. This guy went out there and screwed the fans that paid to watch him fight. That’s all he did. He screwed the fans. He can try and claim that he did it in protest, but the truth is he had a contract and he had an agent. He could have put on a great fight and then went back to the bargaining table with a little more leverage, but instead he decided to act like a first class asshole.

I’m certain you are aware that there are bonuses for the best fight and whatnot. Maybe Starnes would have/could have made more money that night if he had fought instead of turning the bout into a track event.

Well simply put there's more to the ufc middle weight division than Franklin, Anderson, and Dan Henderson. Now I agree (at least for now) their head and shoulders above the rest of the competition, but on risk of being insulting Leben's at the upper level of B level fighters.

He's often dogged by fans who have no interest in seeing him rise in the rankings or as a competitor. Quitely frankly if he would have fought Bisping and lost, Bisping would have most likely been considered the new toast of the middle weight divsion with full honors.

If Leben would have won, Bisping would have become a pariah. It's annoying. It's like trying to watch someone trying to swim in quicksand with no matter what the result of the fight fans are more than willing to push him down.

It wasn't to long ago the same cloud of loathing seemed to fallow Kenny Florian anywhere which I'll expect to see return at the very first sign of weakness.

But besides beating Leben, also does have a win over Jason MacDonald. Another fighter who in the UFC's middle weight is easily top ten in the ufc.

magog – I get what you are saying, but any achievements he had were quickly erased from the minds of most fans as he ran throughout his fight with Quary.

And I’m not certain I would put Leben at the top of the B level fighters. Maybe more in the middle.

Well not to shoot myself in the foot but unless your names not Fedor, as a fighter your gonna have bad nights.

There's nothing so irritating than seeing fans jump all over weakness like vultures (guilty) at the first sign. I'm looking forward to giving Kalib another chance.

After all it's not like he just got a dui, or blew a drug test for nano. So he ran like a bitch. Cro Cop did it with Fedor, Mark Homnick did it his second Ufc fight with Franklin's trainer George.

It happens.

If it's a matter of entertainment, I'd rather watch Kalib run like a bitch than watch Dean Lister fight.

I’m not knocking him because I see weakness. Weakness would be gassing in the fight or having a bad game plan. Running away for 3 rounds and not giving the fans what they paid for is inexcusable.
