Gaming Milestones

So. Let's have a general question for the general games forum.

What gaming milestone changed gaming for you? 2D to 3D? Death of the arcades? Online? What was it?

I think playing either Final Fantasy VI or Metal Gear Solid. The line between game and movie really started to blur, and truly epic experiences became essential to my gaming tastes.

I would say online in the sense of the internet opened doors to exposure for independent games, that have substance over the flashy graphics of mainstream games.

Playstation in general. Games went from these nerdy little cartridge games that no one else seemed to play, to almost CD players that everyone had.

Grand. Theft. Auto.

"The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices, to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill and suspicion can destroy, and a thoughtless, frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all its own -- for the children, and the children yet unborn." - Rod Serling

"Death is but crossing the world, as friends do the seas; they live in one another still. For they must needs be present, that love and live in that which is omnipresent. In this divine glass they see face to face, and their converse is free, as well as pure. This is the comfort of friends; that though they may be said to die, yet their friendship and society are, in the best sense, ever present, because immortal." - William Penn

The Playstation era was extremely important in ushering in a new experience for games making them more cinematic with games like Resident Evil, Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid.

Think of how many great franchises came from that time period too plus games were looked at as cool, non-nerdy and another form of entertainment for general people.

Man I miss those days sometimes.

I remember playing "Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego" on an Apple II way back when and for whatever reason that game always stuck with me.

"Golf" for the NES and playing it with my Uncle who isn't much older then me at my parents house when we were both pretty young. Remember that hole with the big stupid lake in the middle (might have been 3?) I'd always wind up in that lake, or the crazy trees and that'd be the end of my round.

"Tecmo Super Bowl" which will forever go down as the last battle between me and a dog. We had a dog, he bite through my NES controller while playing a game of Tecmo and it was at that moment that I knew I could never love a dog.

Finally -- Zelda. We used to hook the old NES up out on the screened porch when I was younger and pray for rain so that we could stay inside and play Zelda. Goddamn that game was great.

I'd also throw NHL 95 into the mix but that came much later and by then I was already a convert.

Neverwinter Nights. Before this game, I didn't care about online multi player. In fact, I mocked people who spent their time playing games online with 'other people'. Now, I love it. Be it a RPG like NWN, or a sports game like NHL 09, I enjoy them. This game opened my eyes for sure...
