My computer seems to freeze at random. Sometimes while booting up, or within a few minutes after boot up. Bad hard drive? Virus/Trojan? Corrupt Registry?
I ran chkdsk & it fixed some corrupt attributes & bad clusters but I still have the freezing problem.
Thoughts?

Sounds virusy to me. Did you run a start-up scan or one in Safe Mode at least?

If nothing else works, take it to a computer repair place, unless your hard drive is full of naked kiddies.

Just pictures of my daughter which is why I want to try to get it running again instead of just wiping it out & starting over.

Make sure your RAM strips are properly lodged in. It may also be that they have gone kaput.

Well now the thing won't even boot up. A friend of mine thinks heat might be an issue. That might be part of the problem but I think there are other things going on. The last time it even came close to booting up it gave me a message that boot up failed because of an error with the CPU timing being off. That doesn't sound good.

Set the BIOS to the default clockspeed/multiplier settings. Did you try to overclock it? Your friend may be on to something. Replace the heatsink and/or the fan and see if that works. Just borrow one from somewhere to test.
If you don't know how to do that, there's a max thread somewhere that ran to about 8 pages of tears followed by sunshine and happiness.

I never fucked with the BIOS at all, which is what worries me. Could the CPU be fucked? I replaced the fan about a year ago because the old one was dying. I don't think heat is an issue but I'm no expert.

A fucked CPU can cause freezes too, yep. Again, if you can borrow one for a while from someone, you can troubleshoot and figure out who the culprit is: CPU, RAM or the motherboard.
