I think the british media really underated fiorentina. ON radio 5 before they said liverpool were leagues ahead of fiorentina. Then later on the radio they claimed it was a big surprise that fiorentina were in the lead. I agree liverpool are the better team but they were acting like it was liverpool v bolton. I would say fiorentina are slightly better than a team like spurs and would say a par score for liverpool would have been a draw, so huge shock is a bit of an exageration!

Had Arsenal, Sevilla, Lyon, Barcelona and LIVERPOOL in it.
I thought Liverpool would hammer them - but obviously I know shit. Good result for Serie A last night. It takes a bit of a battering sometimes, but there's still some really good players and teams in Italy. Good scalp for Serie A.

In fairness, the fact that the goal took place in the 93rd minute made up for it.

Whoa, some weird and wonderful results tonight. I rarely check out the highlights of the group stages due to lack of interest, but think they could be worth a watch!

Missed a penno, conceded two own goals, the 4th took a giant deflection too and their goal was an OG too.

How can rafa be sacked if you have 2 joint owners who hardly speak to each other. Im not sure I would trust the current owners to replace him anyway, I think a big name like klinsman would be more likely. I personally think if liverpool have a poor season then it has to be accepted that if a manager stays anywhere long enough he will have an occasional bad season but if you have belief in that manager then you have to accept it. Moyes has had the odd poor season but the board kept him and have reaped the rewards since.
I think rafa have made mistake, I dont think he can get the most out of the more average players like fergie can, I dont think his transfer dealings were wise this summer and I think he has got rid of a lot of strikers who are better than what he has at present. However I feel over the last year he hasnt been given enough financial support from the board. A team like man utd could afford to sell a big player and have a quiet summer in the transfer market, liverpool havent got the squad depth of man utd and after the sale of alsono i think rafa needed a lot more funds to make that squad challenge.

I know one of them spoke out against him a few weeks ago. They may not like each other, but I willing to bet if it affects their wallets, they'll be more than willing to consider it.

A loss against United, and I can easily see Rafa gone.
Won't happen, they can't afford to sack him.

And they can't afford not to qualify for the Champions League next year either.
You think if they lose on Sunday and he gets the boot there's someone else on the market good enough to turn things around?

A lot of their problems (especially involving the defence), seem to be of the mental variety, so yeah, I'm guessing there are man-managers out there good enough to turn things around. And a manager who doesn't cling to the same system despite losing a player integral to it might not be the worst thing in the world either.

I don't think I've ever seen Casillas make two major mistakes like that in one match.
The first goal I didn't even realise that it had gone in for a couple of seconds, I was sure that he'd let it go wide.

Great game. Could be a big night in the career of Alex Pato.
Gorgeous finish for his second. That was not easy to do.

I thought the commentators were overly harsh on him regarding the first goal. I mean, sure, he should have saved it, but it was a well struck shot, very well placed and just came out of no where.
Brilliant game, though. The standard of football was quite poor at times considering the teams involved, but in terms of drama, it was a 10/10, had everything.
And what a week Pato is having, scored a superb winner against Roma over the weekend and then this. He really does look like the real deal. Madrid should have gone for him instead of wasting close to a 100 Million Euro's on Kaka and the awful Benzema.

Moyes inherited a shambles when he took over at Everton and has pretty much managed them on a shoestring budget except for maybe the last 2 years where he has been given some funds. He was also never expected to qualify for the champs league. It's generally accepted that Everton in most seasons are over performing. That is why he can afford to have bad seasons.
Also, Everton's finances doesnt hinge on them finishing in the top 4 and getting champions league football every season.

He has been given plenty. 24mill on Torres 20mill on Keane, 20mill on Aquilani and 18mill on Johnson add that to the rest of what he's spent and he's been given a good run in the transfer market.
Quote: after the sale of alsono i think rafa needed a lot more funds to make that squad challenge.
he replaced Alonso with Aquilani. that was his choice. he has been given funds. the truth is that the majority of his dealings in the transfer market have been poor. If you were the owner of Liverpool and his history in signing players would you really want to give him an open cheque book every summer, i wouldnt thats for sure

From memory in the last year in terms of big signings he sold
keane 12 million alonso 30 million arbeloa 4 millions
and brought in
johnson 18 million aquilannia 19 million
If these figures are correct, thats a deficit of 9 million. Liverpool overperfomred last season compared to their 2 main rivals who have far bigger wage budgets and more strength in depth. For liverpool to move on in my opinion they needed to be spending comfortably more than they were bringing in as the likes of sunderland have done.
Your right rafa has made mistakes in the transfer market and I have already criticised some of his transfer dealings. However its only worse sacking a manager if the chairman knows enough about football to appoint a manager who is capable of improving the side. Lets not forget that tom hicks's ideal of a good replacement was jurgen klinsmann a man with no club maagerial experience who was sacked after one year. If I had to give either benitez or klinsmann an open chequebook I would go for rafa every time!

I'm not sure you should be including Keane in that figure as pool spent that much on him (possibly more, it was going to reach 20 million after a downpayment and installments) 3 months before they sold him (which looks like a big mistake now)

im not saying he should get the boot, im saying he's had a fair crack at the transfer market and havent utilised it properly.
Also, if Liverpool's poor run continues for a few more games i can see the owners pulling the trigger on him and trying to appoint someone that can do a job till the end of the season at least.
Klinsman wouldnt in my opinion be a good choice since his only club experience was a failed one at Bayern but then again, he did reach the Semis of the World Cup. I could see them trying to temp Sven or even be fickle enough to move for Grant due to his work at Chelsea

Conceding three soft goals aside, I thought United were really good tonight. Macheda did really well considering it was his Euro debut and could've grabbed a goal or two, and Obertan is looking a hell of a talent in the few games he's played in.

Yeah, Inter have gone from top to bottom in one night. I was pretty shocked Rubin Kazan were dong so well until I actually saw their side, that's one hell of a group.
