CBS/Showtime dropped the ball with their first Stikeforce show
      #6524145 - 11/08/09 01:37 PM

I have watched Strikeforce on the internet with its Playboy Mansion shows, the NBC show with the Poker broadcaster and Ken Shamrock, and every show since they took over the Showtime contract, and am absolutely shocked that there was NO PROMOTION OF THE FACT THAT IF YOU WANT TO WATCH STRIKEFORCE YOU NEED TO ORDER SHOWTIME!

There were tons of HDnet commercials (which is the mostly unavailable channel owned by Mark Cuban...not CBS), but not one (that I recall) SHOWTIME commercial promoting they're the home of Strikeforce and you need to ORDER NOW. CBS owns Showtime. Most of the television audience last night didn’t consist of hardcore MMA fans, so they had no idea who Strikeforce is and no idea where you can watch it. There's no excuse for this. Also, there could have been commercials promoting the other great Showtime original series. Just completely boggles my mind.

Even the cage mat had a CBS logo rather than a Showtime logo, which would make more sense considering Showtime is the network that regularly airs Strikeforce, not CBS.

I don't recall one mention of the announcers reminding the audience to order Showtime to watch Strikeforce either.

And speaking of announcing...Mauro Ranallo is the most annoying announcer ever. He needs to go back to pro wrestling where his act might actually work. He's loud, obnoxious, overbearing, and uses the lamest puns.

I, like most MMA fans, want Strikeforce to succeed (I’d be happier if M-1 wasn't attached to any show though), but if Showtime doesn't get promoted, then Strikeforce will remain relatively unknown.

They'll remain that wannabe UFC with two less sides to its cage and lame rules that prevent a fighter from using his forearms and elbows while on the ground with his opponent (this rule needs to be changed ASAP BTW).

Actually that douchebag Aussie that calls fights on HDNet is the worst announcer and the one who uses the most lame puns. I've always found Mauro Ranallo to be not too bad.

I can't stand Renallo. But yeah Michael Schiavello takes the cake when it comes to annoying announcers. "It's good night Irene!"

Nothing beats Schiavello having an orgasm as Sakuraba was making his entrance at DREAM 12.

Grown on you like a fungus? Yes, that is bad. Schiavello sucks. Can't DREAM get Bas and Quadros together again?

This fight did more for Rogers than I think for Fedor. He looked pretty good against arguably the best heavyweight in the world. I was pleasantly surprised that he did in fact have a semblance of a ground game. I expected Fedor to win, and he did, so my expectation was met.

Shields vs Miller was good in that Shields was able to prove he does have a gas tank and that his ground game is still good enough to compensate for his rudimentary striking. Shields is almost as one-sided a fighter you can get but still manages to defeat quality fighters, which in my opinion says a lot for his one strong side. The funniest part was Big John getting the biggest crowd reaction.

Silva vs Werdum was a good fight for TV, but I don’t think it did anything for either guy. Silva demonstrated he has a questionable gas tank and Werdum looked like he probably won’t beat anyone better than Silva (does anyone see him having a chance against Fedor?).

Soko did better against Mousasi than I expected, but the result was the same. It was nice to see him using some of his Judo though.

If Shields runs into someone who can defend his takedowns or has better takedowns than him *cough*GSP*cough* he's done for. If Miller could have kept that fight standing he would have won for sure. I loved that part in I think the 5th round where Miller went crazy with strikes and had this goofy look on his face with his tongue sticking out.

Alves, Fitch and obviously GSP would beat Shileds in my opinion. In the case of Alves and GSP, it could be ugly.

The guy is just awkward on his feet, and his ground game is most effective when he's on top. He won't get on top of Fitch and certainly not GSP. And Alves has stuffed Koscheck's takedowns and has shown a remarkable ability to get back to his feet against GSP, so he could pretty much destroy Shields on his feet.

Well, aside from Fedor, I don’t think there is anyone in Strikeforce (even the champions) who could walk into the UFC and necessarily challenge for a title. But that situation should be somewhat expected considering the depth and size of the respective promotions.

I’d love to see Shields in the UFC, but I tend to think he could easily go 0-3 if he got bad matchups right away. Obviously Fitch or Alves would be bad for him and I doubt he would even do well against Koscheck. If he stayed at Middleweight I would look forward to a matchup with him and Demian Maia, but I think most anyone better than that would beat him too.

Just my thoughts.

Last night Mauro Ranallo annoyed me less than he normally does. "it's Miller time" kinda gave me a snicker.

I think Jake should cut back to 170. It's only a matter of time before he runs into someone to big at 185. Maybe Lindland.

I loved Silva vs Werdum. I wouldn't right either of them off. If Werdum is getting better the sky is the limit. Silva did alright as well. I wouldn't mind seeing either of them vs Josh.

Silva and Werdum looked incomplete agianst each other because their heavy weights and damn near every heavy weight is missing something. On that note Werdum could beat Brock if he was in the ufc.

So with all the free agents at middle weight who would be the best fight for Jake Sheilds?

Travis Lutter?
Jason Mcdonald?
Paulo Philo?
Ninja?
Jeremy Horn?
Cyborg?
Lindland?

I disagree. Arlovski looked pretty good against Fedor, right up until the KO of course. Rogers got a quick flurry of punches on the ground and some knees against the cage, but that's about it. It's not like he almost finished Fedor or anything.

It certainly helped his profile, in that people will want to see his next fight.

Well you could point out that both Mark Hunt and Arlvoski where doing alright against Fedor before losing and have both fallen apart in recent fights. Who knows. Maybe Fedor's cursed.

Rogers was gonna lose to Fedor. We all knew this, because we've seen Fedor, for years, and years. Rogers made it to the second round, and managed to do some damage. That's above and beyond anything anyone could have hoped for.

Reveiwing Adama Tool's column.

thumbs up!

the the thumbs up, thumbs down concept. I'm simple minded as all hell, and gimmick crap like this gets me every time. Hell it's even better than say a star system. WOOT Adam Tool is the new Scott Keith!

Picking on the Wamma belt.

Sucking up to the under ground favorite Miller to prove his street cred as mma smark.

Thumbs down

Pissing about Gegard (or Gayhard in Magog Speek) when their's literally no call to. The column (I'm guessing) is reviewing strike force, and he gives thumbs down for Gayhard being in Strike Force. That's objective.

Thumbs side ways (heh)

Mark Miller and Deray Davis and me failing to give a crap. In all seriousness Adam does a great job here informing you about how two fighters got screwed out of making a honest living and their fight got pulled entirely.

Truth is, this should, and could have been the head line of the column, but Adam shoots his own foot off by squeezing Mark Miller and Deray Davis at the back of his fucking Column! Holy hypocrites batman!

But Adam Tool did the reasonable, safe thing and focused on the draws in the events for his column. Just what Strike Force did.

Over all I give the column 2 and half stars. I loved and hated it.

I wasn't picking on Gegard, I was picking on the company he worked for. The column is subjective, since it is an opinion based piece and all.

I honestly don't understand your hypocrite comment about putting Davis/Miller at the end of the column. Yes, I chose to lead off with Fedor. Don't see how that could be considered hypocritical, but I'm not magog.

I know you where picking on the company he worked for.

But if your reviewing Strike Force, and honestly their promoting Gegard, the best they can. How is that thumbs down? As a fan I agree it would be more ideal to have all top mma stars in the ufc, but that's hardly strike forces job.

Gegard, is getting exposure against big names, in entertaining fights, against ex ufc fighters. So what's strike force doing wrong exactly?

But I guess I'm not Adam Tool. Fun column, I look forward to seeing you pimp it every week.
