Is coming in two weeks!
Since my brother has taken the 360 to his new house out of campus, I have to resort to getting the PS2 version.

Hate to be nitpicky, but could you remove my last user title from the end of the new one? Thanks.

The article I read in WWE Magazine made it sound like his entrance is complete with the virtual Kennedy telling Chimmel to shut up and he does the announce deal himself. Is that really how it goes?

They'd be insane if they didn't have that be how it goes.
PS2 for me, though I'll probably just rent it.

I'll be grabbing the 360 version. The demo was pretty cool but the changes to the controls suck ass.
Have no fear though, you can use the control scheme from SvR06, just choose control type C and you are good to go. After that, it is awesomeness.

The videos on IGN looked pretty crappy, the gameplay looks sooooo sloppy. But I've only been playing the N64 AKI wrestling games for the past year, so I guess I have to reacclimate myself to the SD series.

Yay for Europe getting it first!
Well, here are my thoughts after a couple of days playing it:
- First bad thing you'll notice: the load times are a real bitch. I think it's pretty clear that this game is really stretching the PS2's hardware (unsurprising, as it was concieved for next-gen consoles but got shunted from the PS3 when the console got delayed). I doubt this is a problem on the X-Box 360 version, but for the PS2...make sure you have a book, because it's a good 30 - 40 seconds in places.
- The new control scheme is an interesting idea but pretty counter-intuitive. I gave up early on and switched to a control scheme (it's D, in the options) that's almost identical to the prior entiries in the Smackdown series. I can understand wanting to change it to analogue sticks or whatever, but why change stuff like making attack square instead of X? Anyway, it's fine now.
- Gameplay is largely unchanged, except now you hold L1 along with circle and direction (or flick the right analogue if you're using the default controls) to do a proper grapple. Without L1 you do a quick grapple that's hard to counter (arm drags, snap mares, stuff like that). That's good and No-Mercyish.
- Pre-match mini-game is gone. It's replaced by a short animation (like a cut scene) of the wrestler's squaring up and the referee bringing his hand down to start the bell.
- The new animations are great. The counters all look really smooth.
- Lots of interactive stuff to play around with outside the ring, etc. I haven't tried out the 'fight in the crowd' area yet. Plus there's these new grapples you activate by pressing R3 that let you walk around with your opponent in a suplex or chokeslam or whatever (subject to your relative weight classes and stamina) and you can even dump them out of the ring, which is pretty awesome.
- Create an entrance no longer has annoying load times, as it gets a rolling preview in the background. That's cool, but you can't have a 'full preview' because the music won't synch up properly when you select it (the preview just repeats in the background, but you have to hit square to preview the music, so unless you time it perfectly, you won't get it how it'll eventually occur in the real entrance). Also I struggled a bit with changing camera angles. On the other hand, you can have pyros fire off exactly when you want so I have, for instance, a massive explosion go off when Darkness pushes his arms down after doing the little Brock Lesnar dance I use for his entrance.
- CAW is mostly unchanged except that the interface and controls are slightly different so it was difficult for me to do it as smoothly as before. There's also only about one decent long haircut (*sighs*). However, there's a new thing where you can select from pre-set colours instead of fiddling about with the colour chart like before. This is good for Darkness, cos it's just black for everything...
- How come I can't select the martial arts or luchadore movesets for Darkness? It could be to do with his weight class, so I'll have to experiment more.
- Talking of weight class, super heavyweights now no-sell almost anything a light-heavyweight or lighter throw at them. They literally just shrug off attacks - I tried to clothesline Big Show and just bounced off!
- Back to movesets: you only get 4 slots for rear grapples now. Initially I was horrified, but then I rememberd how boring it was trying to put in variations of bulldogs, back suplexes and sleeper holds in the old 10 slots, since no one really does moves from here.
- Season is a lot of fun. I have it on easy mode so I can just concentrate on unlocking and beefing Darkness up and I won the belt within a couple of months (no 'Virgil Runnels amendment' to screw you out of it this time...) and there's been two storylines since I won it that depend on me being the champ, so I assume there's a fair amount of variety (since there'd have to be alternatives to those if I'd lost the title matches). For some reason though, my CAW doesn't come out with the belt and it magically appears when he gets to his 'ring' animation. It may be something to do with the entrance moves I chose - again, I have to experiment with this some more.
- The Legends are cool. All three faces of Foley are in it, which is a nice touch, as well as the Hart Foundation and Dusty Rhodes. You get Eddie Guerrero without having to unlock him, which was nice.
- The commentary uses most of the same lines from last year. There's a couple of new things, but it was all fairly familiar. I haven't encountered any of the reported problems with it yet.
- The soundtrack is a lot better, in my opinon. Last year's was kind of...meh...but there's actually a couple of songs on this one that I enjoy listening to.
- There's all sorts of talk about the graphics but, honestly, I didn't notice the vast improvement that a lot of reviews seem to mention. It's better, sure, but it wasn't like 'wow!' like the step up between, say, JBI and SYM was.
In conclusion: if you liked '06, this is mostly more of the same with a few tweaks here and there. If you're after the seminal wrestling game experince....well, if you didn't have it last year then you aren't going to have it here either. I'd certainly say it's better overall and, if you have the spare cash, go pick it up. But if you hate the Smackdown series, or hated '06 specifically, then this one isn't going to improve your opinion.
I like it a lot though.

Also, if you're the kind of person that makes a lot of CAWs (like me), be aware that they've taken out about 200-odd moves and only put about 50 new ones in. Now, some of those are old animations from SD! 1 and stuff which have finally been gotten rid of, some have been replaced by the new ultimate control moves but there's a few others that are totally missing. It's kind of annoying, but unless your CAW for '06 had a specific move they've taken out you probably aren't going to notice that much (in other words, I take the view that the outrage on the gamefaqs board is a little bit of an overreaction - especially given that the phrase 'take out' is quite misleading; it's new game, after all).
The CAW belt entrance thing, it turns out, is just that some entrance moves don't let a CAW appear with a belt. Pretty annoying (for the record; Superstar 13 on the stage, Superstar 17 on the ramp, Superstar 13 ring-in and Hardcore Holly ring-in I know for a fact don't let belts show up - I recommend using moves of known title holders for your CAW if you want to see belts).
Certain weight classes don't have access to certain types of grapple either. From what I hear, cruisers don't get power or brawling, heavies don't get martial arts or luchadore and super-heavies don't get technical either. There's some complaints around that without access to the martial arts moves you can't make Samoa Joe, but we all know that the martial arts grapples suck balls, right, guys?
Despite these flaws, I've done nothing but enjoy the game so far but invariably some people are going to hate it because, against all common sense, they expect every new game to be absolutely perfect. It isn't perfect, but it's fun and if you like Smackdown games then you'll like it.
Just don't go in there expecting every single little flaw to be fixed from last year - you'll still be bored of this one by the time '08 comes out

You can, you'll just have to lie about his weight. There's nothing to stop you making a 5'3" dude with the super-heavyweight class or an 8' CAW who weighs 180. You just can't mix and match.
That said, the new Ultimate Control moves include powerbombs, chokeslams and the like, and they're not limited by weight class.

I'm actually really curious to what you guys are going to think of this game.
As much as I don't want to, I think i'm going to have to use the default contol to get the full access of the moves, without it being a huge pain in the ass using "control d".

All I know is that on Xbox 360, Control C are the old controls, and if you tap B+RT, that's how you do a hard grapple.
It's pretty smoth, actually. I do hate, however, using the trigger buttons for counters.

Yeah, that's by-far the most annoying thing. I'd estimate that, in Season mode, with load screens, cut scenes and all the rest of it I'm averaging about four or five matches total per hour. I mean, it's not like I'm sitting there bored for 45 minutes waiting for it to load - it doesn't seem that long, but I keep looking at the clock when I play and thinking, 'Holy shit, I've been playing an hour and I'm not even at the PPV yet...'.
It sounds like I'm panning the hell out of this game, I know, and it does seem kind of flawed in places for various reasons, but I really have had a lot of fun with it so far. I guess all the bad things aren't really make-or-break features for me or something - I can certainly put up with losing the death valley driver move in return for Kennedy's full entrance and being able to chokeslam a dude out of the ring.
So far, good things > bad things.

There's no Death Valley Driver move in CAW mode?
The DVD is a heavily used move, that's really pathetic that they'd leave that out. That move was in Smackdown ONE, for God's sakes.

Actually, it seems that the guy who counted the '200 moves removed' wasn't very smart, since there's a lot of renamed and moved stuff, and also a lot of moves you can do using the Ultimate Control Moves. There's a version of the DVD usable by selecting Somoan Drop 1 as a UCM - it's not the most devestating looking version (somewhere between the old DVD and the F-U, and the executing player remains standing) but it's in there.
