And we're rolling... - 06.27.2007
I'm completely spun by this Benoit thing. I was away for the weekend and out of the loop net-wise. So when I got it on Tuesday it wasn't gradual, it was the full shebang.
Benoit being dead I could just about grasp. As a wrestling fan I'm sickeningly used to it. But then as I got the rest of the information it took me further and further away from reality.
I'm likening it to when Diana died. Just for the pure, out of the blue, when-you-weren't-looking shock of it all.
I don't have many friends into wrestling. I'd just spent the weekend with my buddy Pete watching wrestling but I had to call him straight away. Same deal when Mr. Perfect died. I've mentioned it to other people, but....they just don't get it.
There's a connection that wrestling fans have with wrestlers that you don't get from actors or musicians. Maybe it's because it's a niche thing and we're all fiercely protective of it. Maybe it's because we see the physical pain and struggle wrestlers put themselves through to entertain us. I dunno. There's no actor or musician I'd really care about in the same way.
I knew I had the column to do this week. I wrote and re-wrote it about six times. In the end I decided to not deal with the tragedy, but to try and do what I normally do. Make 17% of you laugh, and 83% of you mad.
We watch wrestling and talk about it and follow it on this site as a distraction. Escapism. Entertainment. So hopefully I can do a bit of that with "You're An Idiot" this week. |

So far the feedback for the Vince McMahon's death article has me catching a lot of flak from readers. But with the sad news today of the passing of 'Sensational' Sherri Martel, I just simply can't work out how the WWE are going to handle this.
Sherri had a HUGE role in WWE programming when I was growing up, broke new ground for women in pro-wrestling and managed the likes of the Honky Tonk Man, Ted DiBiase, Randy Savage and Shawn Michaels in WWF, Shane Douglas in ECW and Ric Flair and Harlem Heat in WCW (to name just a few).
She deserves to be featured and remembered on today's programming....but how exactly are the WWE going to do that while they're simultaneously milking a fake-death for storyline purposes? |

5) CM Punk – The WWE/ECW version simply ain’t the same. But in memorial of the real and classic Punk, he gets the 5 spot. Any gimmick that can lead the performer to either revered babyface or hated heel is a stroke of pure genius.
4) Chris Hero – Cravate!
3) Umaga – Whilst losses to Lashley and the Italian Stallion have diminished his monster heel gimmick as of late, Umaga has been dominating Raw since late 2006, and was shown to be in a equal class to the WWE Champion. That’s big.
2) Takeshi Morishima – the single biggest and greatest badass monster heel in pro-wrestling today. Morishima’s destruction of Homicide and dominance of ROH gives him the edge over the other fine gimmicks featured. He is the Godzilla of modern wrestling. All should fucking bow.
1) The Undertaker – Love him or hate him…and I pretty much hate him…The Undertaker’s gimmick has remained gloriously strong despite the sojourn into the realm of American Badass. Ten times what Kane has, ‘Taker can destroy virtually any of the fresh, young talent and still look legit doing it. Winning and the last Wrestlemania solidified his incredible gimmick.
