And we're rolling... - 09.20.2007
That is something I like to say: “Keep it real and listen to what you love.” But what does that actually mean?
Music is art, but it is also a part of pop culture. Music means many things to many people. For some, it’s obsessive, while at the opposite end of the spectrum for others it is just a casual thing to tap your toes to while doing something more interesting. For me, and many people, it is an all consuming hobby that really borders on a lifestyle. I love music. I love the nuances, the depth, the passion, and the emotion that comes from good music and further how it invokes it in the listener. I am happy to talk to anyone about music and could probably do it all day. More than anything, I’m always happy to meet others that are like this. It’s rare to meet someone who thinks of music on the same level.
Most people are into music more as background music. They like it, but it’s a casual thing. They find what they like and pop it in while driving around or at home doing something. That’s cool. I certainly don’t expect people to be like me and sit around with the headphones on listening to music whenever possible.
Then there are those who like music because of its roll in pop culture. It’s part of a scene. You know the ones; the kids who will pick up a shirt from Hot Topic but have never actually heard or understand the music from the band. How many kids walking around in Slayer shirts at the mall have actually listened to a respectable amount of the bands catalog? How many have even heard their music at all? Do they know how historically important Reign In Blood was to Metal? They are faking an art I love, just because they want to look cool, and that is contemptible. They do it because it’s hip, it’s current, and it’s the scene. These people are not real. Metal is not conformity, nor should music be.
Listen to the music you like, no matter what people think - Including me. I don’t expect people to like what I listen to. Hell, some of it could clear out a graveyard. That’s OK. I’m not playing it for them, and you shouldn’t play something just for me or anyone else.
So keep it real, and listen to what you love. Not for me, your friends, your peers, or for any music scene. Listen to it because you want to. Then turn it up and have fun.
