Ask 411 Wrestling 03.25.09: Female Refs, Wrestling Podcasts and Tito Santana... WORLD CHAMPION???
Posted by Mathew Sforcina on 03.25.2009

Hello, once again, to a pre-prepared Ask 411 Wrestling! Due to various sundry reasons, I've had to prepare this a day or so earlier than usual, so if some massively huge event has taken place in the world of Professional Wrestling in the last day or two, forgive me. Although if you're coming to me for news, you may be missing the point.

Besides, now that I've said that, I've ensured that there won't be any such developments.

Before we begin, a mini review of Legends of Wrestlemania.

Okish, but not REALLY worth buying, at least not new and now.

Here ends the mini review of Legends of Wrestlemania.

Backtalking

Musicians in Wrestling: First off, if you'd like to find out more about Bob Mould's time in WCW, Gary sent me a link to a mp3 of an interview with him. Here you go.

But still, naturally I left a few out. Ignoring those already mentioned by me or the question, musicians who had a physical role include Toby Keith, Ozzy Osborne, Alice Cooper.

And then there's Kevin Federline. OK, technically he's up there, given his win over Cena, but calling K-Fed a musician is like calling Jimmy Fallon a talk show host. OK, technically it's true, but you wouldn't think of that term first when thinking of him. After all, he's a sad, pathetic idiot of a man who's only famous because of who he's had sex with, who is about as talented and worthy of attention as any bum off the street you can find, a guy who the sooner he's out of the spotlight, the better.

And K-Fed's not that much better.

Sunset Flips: As someone pointed out, the Flip was a finisher for a long time, and lots of matches and a few titles have been won with the move, including the NWA World Title.

Savage Messing Up?: Ok, I messed up here slightly, in that looking at the tape…

That does seem probably deliberate, although it just reinforces how he failed. But the recap I read made it seem more like a slip than a deliberate thing like that. Unlike…

Mind Games: See here's the thing. If you watch that match (it's on like a dozen WWE DVDs so it's easy to find), the ending part makes no sense after the DQ. Why would Paul hit HBK then get out of the ring? Why would Mankind visibly pin Shawn? Why didn't Vader touch Shawn? Remove the DQ though, and the ending makes sense. It just doesn't work as is, but if you assume that prior to the match Vince changed his mind after he stated clearly "Mankind, your next WWF champion", then it makes sense. But of course that's not something I can prove. It's just, from my POV, obvious.

Charlie Haas Disliked: Vince McMahon doesn't like Charlie Haas, having stated he'd rather watch paint dry. Haas Pop was for a while writer slang for no crowd reaction. He's just not a guy Vince likes. Which begs the question why he's still there…

Hogan & Goldberg: Yes, Nash ended Goldberg's streak, but the idea was when Goldberg beat Hogan, that Hogan would get his win back later on. Nash then stepped in and got the match changed when Hogan left for a bit.

Hogan Hate: So I'm not allowed to criticize Hogan at all without being a hater? Hey, everyone has some foibles. I point out my own as much as everyone else's. So I'm sorry if you can't handle someone pointing out that your ‘God' is a political nightmare to deal with at times.

Your Turn, Smart Guy…

The answer I was looking for was Declan McMahon, who made his debut at WMXX. Aurora Rose would have been the answer, had she actually appeared on screen. Since she didn't, and Hornswoggle isn't a McMahon, Declan was the answer.

Who Am I? I won a title in my first official WWE match, which began a career of holding gold in the company. I've held many different titles, although no WWE World Title, yet. Ironically, perhaps my most personal and best feud did in part revolve around gold, just not in the form of a title belt. I've had the same name for most of my career, with one specific match seeing me introduced under a totally different name/persona. A multi-time Intercontinental Champion, and a foreigner to America's Shores, Who Am I?

Questions, Questions, Who's Got The Questions?

CourtesyFlush begins with some 80's questions.

1. Is it true that Rowdy Roddy Piper was only pinned once, at Wrestlemania VIII, when he fought Bret Hart? I can understand that Piper was massively over as both a heel and a face, but did Vince really allow him to never lose cleanly? As an 11 year old kid, I always enjoyed watching Piper, but I eventually caught on that unless he won, his matches always had a non-ending (countout, DQ). Even in the Survivor Series, it was obvious that unless he was going to survive, he'd get counted out or DQd to be eliminated.

Overall in his career? No, as a young kid just starting out he was pinned on a regular basis, like almost every green rookie kid. Prior to WWF, was he undefeated? Nope, he had some famous losses, including losing a loser leaves town match to Chavo Guerrero (a.k.a Chavo Classic) in Mexico, working as The Masked Canadian. Was he pinned only once in WWF? Prior to his most recent run (where he teamed with Sean O'Haire), in one on one matches, (he lost tag matches at house shows but it's unclear how the decision was made), he was in fact NOT pinned once. He lost to Jimmy Sunka via pinfall in a Fijian Strap Match July 20th, 1984, a match which was actually released on WWF Home Video, Best of the WWF Vol 3. Having found that result I stopped looking, so there may be more. But nope, Piper was not unpinned. But like Dreamer's early pinfall wins over Raven, they are just ignored.

2. So apparently Tito Santana was an "enhancement talent", used to help newer guys get over. Fair enough, but he seemed to stay in that role for a really long time (his win/loss record at Wrestlemania I-VIII was 1 and 7). If that was his role, why did Vince transform into El Matador? Was there talk of him "graduating" back up, perhaps to the lower or mid card with his new gimmick?

Well, according to Tito, he was in fact in line for the WWF Title under the gimmick. In this interview, he claims that after the Steroid Scandal, he and Bret were the two names being tossed about to be champ, based on if they wanted to push into Canada or South America. Canada got the pick, so Bret got the title.

But assuming you don't believe him, the re-branding was to keep him current. At the time, the WWF was gimmicky/kid friendly, and just plain old Tito Santana wasn't that interesting. So, by giving him the El Matador gimmick, he had a hook he could get the kiddies in with, while maintaining his credibility so that when he jobbed out, he still gave a rub, while keeping in step with the rest of the roster. Just because a guy is enhancement talent, doesn't mean you don't have to keep him hip.

Christian asks about taping schedules. Seriously.

Congratulations on such a great column.

I have a question about taping issues.

With Smackdown's recent double tapings and the run up to WrestleMania involving crossovers between the brands (i.e. – HBK/Undertaker, HHH/Orton, Edge/Cena etc....), does the second taped edition of Smackdown not seriously get effected because they cant mention anything that has happened on raw (cos it hasn't happened yet).

I would think this would really limit what they can do in terms of continuing feuds/stories. Is this becoming an increasing problem?

Well, considering the company once used to film things months in advance, it's not something that's totally alien to them.

But yes, it is something of an issue, in this day of spoilers and the internet. Clearly they can't get cute and have someone turn heel on the second show then try and act like a face on the Raw in-between. However, they tend to avoid such issues by being selective about who appears on SD and have them wrestle on SD while the announcers can talk about last week's Raw via dub in, and/or even film stuff after Raw then stick it into the show as stuff the ‘live' audience can't see. Smackdown tends to feature more wrestling than Raw, when it comes to cross over stories.

But in this day of post production, I'm fairly sure WWE could pull off almost anything in terms of making a SD crowd react how they want.

The ever-present Manu asks after Wrestling Podcasts.

This ones for everyone - I recently started using iTunes to download podcasts. the UK sun has one with wrestler interviews (Angle, Cena, Orton, Foley, Austin, etc), RVD radio is available as a podcast, and a couple others.

my question is - are there any wrestling podcasts that you (or any of the wonderful 411 readers) know of that have wrestlers on as guests on a regular (every podcast) basis?

Well, there's one with 411 writer Steve Sullivan, as can be listened to at www.talk1490.com but beyond that, I don't know of any since I don't podcast. Readers?

(Hmm. Perhaps a third section for reader questions might be needed…)

Mike asks about hot chicks and gum.

1. I am on youtube and came across Terry Funk's first WWE match in 85 or so, and what caught my eye was this cute looking blonde ref in a ponytail, any info on her??

People, if you're gonna talk about stuff you saw on Youtube, include a link, makes my life a lot easier.

That said, I found it.

Rita Marie, real name Rita Chatterton, was the very first female referee in WWF history, as is mentioned in the video. Possibly the first female ref in Pro Wrestling history, but her career was short, from 85 to about 87. Her biggest claim to fame is, rather than being the first female ref, is that she claimed that Vince McMahon sexually abused her. On April 3, 1992, she accused Vince on TV that in 86 he had tried to force her to engage in sexual acts in his limo, then raped her when she refused. But since she took so long to come forth, her accusations weren't looked into since it was too late. So, at least according to her, you're not the only guy who found her cute.

2. Has there ever been an instance were Mr Perfect missed swatting his gum? or dropping his towel or anything like that on a PPV or show?? I am just curious......thanks

I can vividly recall a Raw after his return in 2002 when he spoke to Debra backstage and the segment ended with him attempting to swat his gum, miss, and the gum actually went down Debra's shirt. Sadly, I was unable to find video, although those people reading who dislike all my videos probably are glad at this.

I don't recall him dropping the towel, but it was bound to happen at some point. Curt was hardly infallible, although he was pretty close at times.

Mark, (always a good name to see in this column), has some more Memphis questions.

I recall from years ago a tag team maybe from Memphis Wrestling....not exactly sure there. The thing that really sticks out is this team were the champs in whatever ( televised ) territory they were in , one was a blonde the other extremely hairy....I am thinking this was Dutch Mantell . The hairy one was duct taped after the match by his partner. Who was the partner and what was the name of the team?

No idea. I assume that the hairy one was duct taped up after the match because he was so wild and out of control that that was the only way to stop him. But with that little information, I couldn't find/work out who it was. Readers?

Second question.... Superstar Bill Dundee , where is he? is he alive still?

Indeed he is still alive, and doing well for himself. Superstar Bill Dundee was born in Scotland before moving to Australia (cheap hometown pop) then emigrating to the US after training in order to work the Australian Tag Team gimmick (which is SO overdue for a comeback), and became a star in the Memphis area in the late 80's. He resides in Tennessee at the moment, where he's a fixture on local radio, has a training school, promotes shows and has a car dealership. So he's keeping busy.

The fight of the week!

Anthony now asks about Savage and Vince.

On the mic, on the mic!

Hey - Great column!

I got one for you - watching the Saturday Night's Main Event DVD has brought up some interesting memories but this one has kind of got me stumped.

Watching Disc 3, there is a Battle Royal that took place on April 27, 1991 and has commentary of Vince McMahon and Macho Man Randy Savage. Savage was playing the heel commentator role making comments about Hogan and all of the good guys, picking Earthquake to win, etc.

My question is this would air after WrestleMania 7, although perhaps taped before, with the infamous Savage/Elizabeth reunion, seemingly becoming an instant face. Did he not become a face right away or am I missing something?

You're sort of missing something. That episode of SNME, which was originally meant to be a "The Main Event" broadcast, was Savage's first show ever as a commentator. It was filmed a couple of weeks after Wrestlemania, and thus, while he was pretty much automatically a face after WM, Savage was still getting used to being a face again. This, coupled with the pressure of his first go round on commentary, meant that he understandable resorted to being more of a heel commentator to counterbalance Vince. It's easily explained away (he'd only just reunited with Liz, it takes time to change your habits and outlook), but it seems to be more just a case of nerves and what was best for the show.

Eric has two opinion question later on, but has a fact one now.

3) A couple of years ago in this very column, I remember a question being asked about Tazz when first coming to WWE, and it was about smaller guys or something. Anyway, the Ask 411 writer from back then included in his answer a story of Vince McMahon seeing Tazz backstage for the first time (in 2000), and saying (in all seriousness) "Who the fuck is this guy?" Now...my question is: Does Vince not know who the hell he signs? Or is it strictly up to the Talent Relations VP? I'd have to imagine, the guy owns this big ass wrestling company and has the final say on who gets signed and who doesn't. He has to at least sit down and watch tapes of who is being recommended, right? Or (as shown in Beyond the Mat w/ Droz) have a sit down with the talent before being signed? So he had to have known who Tazz was, right? Even from doing the frickin' ECW invasion of 96! Or is Vince just an asshole?

Vince genuinely doesn't have the time to watch tapes of Indy wrestling/his competitors. Running a major company like WWE to the degree of micro-management that Vince goes down to takes up a lot of time. Hence he does rely on reports and people knowing what he wants/likes. He does have final say, but it's been proven that he's signed people without seeing them properly. There is another famous example of an ECW guy, (Amish) Roadkill. For months, Vince was told how great Roadkill was after he was picked up after ECW One Night Stand. He was told how he was a big monster of a guy, and Vince was reportedly pleased. He came up with a new gimmick, a Polish-American wrestler, Antoni Polaski. After getting nothing but good reports, Vince finally met him face to face… which was the problem, since they were about the same height, Vince maybe having an inch or two on him.

Vince doesn't like ‘big guys' being shorter than him.

Of course, Vince knowing who you are isn't always a guarantee, there's another story that around late 2000/early 2001 (some versions even put it as late as the InVasion) Vince saw Raven backstage and was angrily asking who the hell had hired him.

Raven would have been in the company for a good 3-6 months by this point.

Vince has to rely on his subordinates scouring the independent scene (and lately, lingerie catalogues) to find the next wave of talent, it's only if some guy or gal is uber good that he'd view tapes, although he'd be more likely to call them up and give them a dark match and watch that.

Vince does, or at least used to meet with talent, and he may still do so, but it seems nowadays most guys go through Johnny Ace instead.

To drag it back to Taz/z, in his defence Taz/z was probably dressed casually and such and thus, perhaps, Vince didn't immediately recognize him. It's possible.

So, to sum up, Vince really is a busy man, of his own choice. So yes, he does rely on others to hire talent.

Next up we have Alex asking about the night after.

What happened on the Nitro after the infamous Hogan heel turn at Bash at the Beach 96? Did Hogan cut another promo? Did the nWo wrestle any matches? Did they start using the porno music that night?

No, Hogan was not there, the somewhat famous 1st Nitro nWo promo not occurring until the following week. On the July 8 1996 Nitro, WCW actually did a good job of tying up all the loose ends to restart the company. They had Sullivan come out and crow about how Hulkamania really was dead, since Hogan killed it, they had Rey Mysterio play shocked face as he spoke about how shocking it all was, they had The Nasty Boys cut a "We don't agree but we respect it" promo on it, you had the 4 Horsemen's reaction, and then the end of the show saw Hall and Nash arrive via limo and attempt to get into the ring before being blocked, then we heard some final words from Sting and Savage about the turn then still shots of said turn.

The entire show basically revolved around the turn, which was a good idea. It was, after all, the most shocking turn in Wrestling history by the biggest good guy ever, so naturally the entire company would react and have an opinion. But no, no Hogan, no match, and no porno music.

Eddie wonders why Bob Backlund got an unusual award.

Love the column, great job every week and all that.

I was looking over past winners for the Wrestling Observer Year End Awards and I came across an odd award that I hope you could explain. One of the awards is "Most Disgusting Promotional Tactic", with past winners being such classy events like, Katie Vick, Melanie Pillman Interview, David Arquette, Exploiting the Persian Gulf War, the pushing of Erik Watts, and the like, but the 1982 winner is "Bob Backlund as champion (WWF) ". I don't understand this at all. I know that Backlund was bland to the point where he had been dubbed "Howdy Doody" by the Grand Wizard and all but was there something else that I am not realizing? I can't see it being that major as Backlund would hold the belt until Dec. 1983. Especially compared to things like 1985's winner - Usage of Mike Von Erich's Near Death. I don't subscribe the Observer so I can't look up what explanation there was for this. Thanks!

Well, I'm not a subscriber either, but I can explain this.

Wrestling Observer, back then, was the nearest thing to an Internet Wrestling Community as existed at the time. Whatever the prototype for smart fans was, if you were a fan who subscribed to the Observer, you were that one. So, those picking the award are IWC types.

Once you accept that, you then look at Bob Backlund. Bob is a weird case, anyone looking back now wonders just what the hell people saw in him as a babyface. His 94 run was 100% gold, but his face run? You just can't see the appeal.

But if you listen to the crowd, the dude was over. His X Factor was off the page, for the most part. He was beloved by the average fan. So is it any wonder that the ‘smart' fans were tiring of him? That's what happened in 82, his continued run as champion was old news for the smart fans, ergo they voted him into this award, and he was runner up in Most Overrated as well. So I guess you could say he was the Cena of his day.

Now THAT's a simile never before used.

Greg T will bridge the gap.

Hey Matthew, good job on the column so far. I hope you're in the mood for a read, because I have a few questions I'd like answered and a scenario I'd like your opinion on.

First, very basic question. I sometimes see dual kip-up/sit-ups when two guys are down (re: Undertaker and Shawn Michaels), and I was wondering how they time it right. Does each guy silently count, or is there some sort of trigger the audience doesn't see or hear? Do the guys just play it by ear?

Well, depends. You wouldn't silently count, since there's no guarantee that you'll count at the same time. You might agree, as you go down, to get up on the ref's 8 if the ref is up. But for the most part, you play it by ear. You take a break and whoever is the most senior guy will judge when it's the best time, and he'll sit up first/sit up slowly so you can catch up. Since it's a move to pop the crowd, it's hard to pre-plan it, you have to play it by ear, so if the crowd isn't reacting you can just get moving faster, and/or milk it a bit more if they are still hot.

Second, a music-related thing. When Kurt Angle first came to the WWE, I distinctly remember thinking "That's Mark Henry's music." Or at least, music Mark Henry used at one point. However, I can find no proof that the world's strongest man ever used it. Is Kurt's infamous "you suck" track actually a hand-me-down, or am I just remembering it completely wrong? Seems like it could be true, since Henry was first brought in and pushed as an Olympic hero (he has a bronze medal, if I'm not mistaken).

Well, it is a hand me down, just not from Henry. The song was originally written for The Patriot, the song being perfect for an All American Hero, which is what Angle thought he was when he debuted. The ‘You Suck' in time was a crowd made thing that was totally a fluke.

Mark Henry, in his first few appearances as an Olympic ‘Superstar', used this theme.

Third, I was watching an ROH DVD featuring two Matt Hardy matches. In the introduction to one match, the announcers avoid using the term "WWE" and instead refer to it as "another promotion." I first thought it was a legal thing, but during the actual match the same guys make mention of the WWE, Matt's contract status, his upcoming feud with Edge, and more. My question is, if they're not allowed to plainly say "WWE" in the intro, then why is it allowed during the actual match? And if it is allowed, why did they beat around the bush in the intro to begin with?

Well, I can't say for sure, but I'm going to go with the ROH Video Wire as the reason. ROH put out a promotional video online every week or so, and they probably thought that the intros might get played on the Wire and thus they avoided the term for fear of getting sued, whereas on DVD in the match it's less likely. So it's a case of they could say it in the intro, but they avoided it so they had ‘clean' footage they could use in further ads without fear of legal action.

My Damm Opinion

Greg T finishes up.

Okay, onto the what-if portion, and I'd really like an opinion on it. Imagine a scenario in which all active wrestlers who happen to be current or former world champs (between WWE and TNA) up and die all at once. Let's say JBL hosted a world champ convention and someone laced the hot dogs. Cena, Triple H, Booker T, CM Punk, John Morrison, Jeff Hardy, Matt Hardy, Tommy Dreamer, Christian, Samoa Joe, Jericho, everybody. Whatever, they're all dead and gone, and the wrestling business now has a top spot vacuum. Who does the WWE and TNA push in the midst of this vacuum? Who becomes a champion? Who keeps their spot in the mid-card while others advance? How would the business change with the focus on all these new, untested guys taking the top spots? I have my own ideas, but I'd like to hear someone else's.

Interesting.

Well, WWE would be in turmoil for a while after the death of Vince McMahon (he's a former world champ), so there's that to deal with.

Getting more serious, ROH would suddenly be in a very good spot, with no-one on their roster going except for Jerry Lynn, they could continue on practically uninterrupted and make a break for it.

TNA would be forced to, shock and horror, utilize the talent it has on staff. Christopher Daniels would probably become the new face of TNA, with MCMG, LAX, Eric Young and Beer Money all moving up the card. The Knockouts would also become that much more important.

WWE, you'd lose Morrison, so… MVP, Benjamin, Kennedy, Kozlov (sigh), Bourne and Regal all got pushed, Regal probably to the moon.

Guys like Regal and Finlay would suddenly gain their weight in gold in terms of value, anyone who's a veteran would become very valuable.

But above all, women's wrestling would gain traction since it's unchanged, and above all, the Indy scene would become very dry all of a sudden as TNA and WWE hire up a whole bunch of guys to replace the lost ones. That's the real issue, you look at the list, you lose a solid percentage of your roster, so you have to hire new guys, so the Indy scene gets a lot more open as the top Indy guys all get contracts.

But yeah, interesting question.

Darrell asks two questions, but since the second one was about matches changing due to injury, I judge it already covered and thus won't answer it.

Thanks for this forum as it really does settle old questions and whatnot. I have a simple one for you, if you don't mind answering. I watched the No Way Out PPV and off break, I knew the spot where Shane hit Orton with the monitor was f'd up. I mean, you don't hit someone with the corner of a sharp object, let alone a monitor and the way Orton was bleeding (non-blade job), you could tell something went wrong. I give Orton all respect for even continuing with the match but you could tell initially after it went down that he was OUT! My question actually has two parts. One, do you think it was originally planned for Legacy to come down and interfere in the mach or was that a way to buy Orton some time to recoup? The way that Shane manhandled them and ultimately hit the "coast to coast" made him come off better than some wrestlers on the mid-card, so I have a sense that it was done as a way to keep the continuity of the match going while giving Orton a little time to get his wits back.

Well, it's impossible to say, of course, hence why I stuck this in the opinion section. Personally, I think it's safe to say that Priceless were meant to interfere, but perhaps not at that exact point. Shane is hardly a catch as catch can technician, so he has to entertain the crowd in other ways, so he used the C2C, but since he couldn't hit that on Orton since Randy was to win, Priceless played substitute.

So I'm hedging my bets in a way, but I'm fairly confident Priceless were meant to be involved.

Eric is back.

1) Would you say Kennedy's chance at superstardom is pretty much dead weight now? I know he had a great opportunity with the McMahon-Who's Your Daddy storyline, but injuries or steroids or whatever it was sidelined him right out of it. He just seems lost in the shuffle. Its as if every time a fire starts to catch, it is quickly put out. What do you think?

Well, never say never, but he's certainly got an uphill struggle ahead of him. If it's not injuries, it's foot in mouth suspensions. If it's not a movie role that was ill-advised, it's an even more ill-advised face turn that removed everything positive about his character in the fans eyes. A heel turn and a push would probably undo a lot of damage. But if he gets cut soon, it wouldn't surprise me…

2) Has anyone (or anyone's character) ever been altered or messed with their entire career without being buried at one time or another? The only one I can think of is The Rock, whom was pushed from the start, and it only got better from there once he turned heel. I can't think of one time the WWE ever buried this guy. Fans responding to him or not, backstage politics aside.

I've put this here because being buried is such a subjective term. One man's bury is another man's temporary unfocus in order to better utilize available talent and/or TV time.

Rock would be the obvious choice. Beyond him, you only have guys who are still in the first stages of their careers, like Santino (who's not so much buried as heaped upon, since he's managed to maintain his overness despite it) and Evan Bourne. But I think this is one for the Readers to argue over. Have at it, for this is the end for this week. Bye!

1. What was to occur at WM 22 if Batista didn't get injured?

2. Do you think a Mysterio vs. Batista match should be Batista's final WWE match?

Christian?

It all works (Light Heaviweight Title for his debut, Canadian, and he and Edge came out as the Conquistadors once) except for that gold thing. Maybe a reference to Trish Stratus's hair?

Funny Vince would do anything to get all the ECW champions to work for him yet he disses them back stage.

Auruora did appear on WWE TV. She was being held by HHH and Vince was tickling her chin and looking at the camera smiling. It was a promo for the move to Mynetwork TV i think

"I recall from years ago a tag team maybe from Memphis Wrestling....not exactly sure there. The thing that really sticks out is this team were the champs in whatever ( televised ) territory they were in , one was a blonde the other extremely hairy....I am thinking this was Dutch Mantell . The hairy one was duct taped after the match by his partner. Who was the partner and what was the name of the team?"

You're probably thinking of the Kansas Jayhawks with Dutch Mantell and Bobby Jaggers.

I'm thinking the who am i is Christian...

Who Am I? I won a title in my first official WWE match, (Light Heavyweight Title against Taka Michinoku) I've held many different titles (European, LH, Tag Team, IC, TNA World Title) my most personal and best feud did in part revolve around gold, just not in the form of a title belt (against Chris Jericho, involved around a Canadian Dollar) I've had the same name for most of my career, with one specific match seeing me introduced under a totally different name/persona (Captain Charisma, assigned by GM Chris Jericho in 2004. A multi-time Intercontinental Champion, and a foreigner to America's Shores, Who Am I?

I'm CHRISTIAN.

1. Why does TNA spend all their time hyping about how great the knockouts are and how better they are when they give them as much time as WWE gives the divas, their matches normally suck nowadays, their hardcore "Bimbo Brawls" haven't been even close to hardcore since Mickie Knuckles faced ODB and Roxxi in one, and Pay wise they are treated the worse and veteran knockouts still make less then male rookies.

2. Why hasn't Miss Elizabeth been inducted into the HOF?

3. Why does Vince Hate women's wrestling so much

4. Last question sorry for so many, Which company do you think will be WWE's biggest competition in the long run and will ROH ever get a women's division cause they seem like the only company right now who could do justice to Women's wrestling.

The tag team the Dutch Mantell was in that you are referring to is The Kansas Jayhawks. His partner was Bobby Duncam.

Christian and Edge feuded over the KOTR trophy in 2001 which led to their split (gold) or the whole Blonde Trish thing with Jericho.

Dutch Mantel's partner was Bobby Jaggers, not Duncum. The blond could have been Wayne Ferris, a.k.a. The Honky Tonk Man.

Bill Dundee lives in and around Jackson, TN. He spent several months recently working for some circus......as a cheap Hornswaggle knockoff! LOL. Dundee used to have several businesses in and around the McKenzie and Paris, TN areas. He lost those in his divorce from his last ex. Ya just should not get caught with those young "girls" there Billy Boy. Unless he now owns some two bit used car lot, Dundee does not own a car dealership. He has sucked up to a couple of local radio personalities who have given him airtime. Fortunately, one of those dudes was recently fired and Dundee is not stinking up local radio with his boring "I was something 30 years ago" stories. Dundee was associated with one local night club that ended up catching fire after some rather bad publicity. He used to have his hand in several cheap strip clubs around West Tennessee as well. In my last conversation with dundee, he came across as a rather bitter old man trying to hang on to his past.

I have posed this questions several times and have yet to get a response. Back in the mid to late 80s I noticed the crowds in the NWA were extremely hot for everything the faces did. There is a very audible "Boom" type sound from the crowd. For example, just watch the first War Games match from 1987 to hear what I am talking about. Does anyone know how this started? It seemed to have fizzled out by the early 90s.

In regards to the You Suck chant for Kurt Angle, it was not crowd started. Originally, Edge and Christian sang the song in a promo and would say "Angle". When Edge went solo and turned face, he was fueding with angle and said in a promo that instead of Angle, it should be "You suck". The rest is history.

"Okay, onto the what-if portion, and I'd really like an opinion on it. I have my own ideas, but I'd like to hear someone else's."

Vince Russo would also be amongst that lot if you count WCW championships, so you're looking at TNA actually becoming a halfway decent wrestling company!

In all seriousness though... that's a fairly morbid question...

I don't know why... but I always forget that Jerry Lynn is a former World Champion

Also.. like I said last week, Chad Brock (who was a pro wrestler before he got his record deal and hit song and a half on country radio) performed on a Nitro, only to be interrputed by Curt Hennig 3/4ths of the way through his song.

Oh.. and you people should be ashamed of yourselves for leaving Ric Flair off the card. Hogan v. Austin v. Rock v. Flair would be a battle of the four "iconic" workers in the general public's eye.. and even replacing Warrior with Flair in the EC would have worked. Bleh.

All in all though, Matt, you're really on top of things, keep up the good work with the column!

"Well, I can't say for sure, but I'm going to go with the ROH Video Wire as the reason. ROH put out a promotional video online every week or so, and they probably thought that the intros might get played on the Wire and thus they avoided the term for fear of getting sued, whereas on DVD in the match it's less likely. So it's a case of they could say it in the intro, but they avoided it so they had ‘clean' footage they could use in further ads without fear of legal action."

This is wrong. The video wires didn't begin until late 2006. Most likely it can be blamed on lack of planning and thus the announcers changed their minds on how they wanted to mention it mid-commentary. And you can't be sued for saying "WWE." Spoken word is fair use. If anything, they could have gotten sued for the WWE logo appearing on the contract Punk signed earlier that summer, but obviously they seemed okay with ROH using their name in one of their biggest angles.

As for the guy who asked about ROH getting a women's division, the company has said that you can consider SHIMMER it's women's division.

the answer is christian

Perhaps my most personal and best feud did in part revolve around gold, just not in the form of a title.

could be the jericho canadian dollar thing or when he first split from edge because he was jealous of edge's king of the ring trophy. remember when christian used to carry it about all the time?

Savage pretty much played heel up until the time that he asked Liz to Marry him. I remeber him being a heel announcer on superstars when the booth was Savage Piper and Vince.

Also the You Suck chant wasn't started by the Fans it was started by Edge.

I remember on the Fall and Rise of ECW DVD, Vince saying he liked Taz's work and was a fan of Taz and the Dudley's so he signed them.

So I'm assuming he knew he was especially with all the hype they gave Tazz prior to his debut.

Edge and christian' big split was based around edge winning the king of the ring and christian being jealous. During this time, christian would insist on carrying around edge's big ass KOR trophy to the ring for matches and backstage treating it almost as his own trophy.

"Nope, he had some famous losses, including losing a loser leaves town match to Chavo Guerrero (a.k.a Chavo Classic) in Mexico, working as The Masked Canadian"

Though it may seem like it L.A. is not a part of Mexico. That program was done for the LaBell promotion at the late, great Olympic Auditorium. There's some video of Piper as the Masked Canadian on the YouTube.

The Answer is Paul Roma

Who Am I? I won a title in my first official WWE match (Intercontinental Title off of Tito Santana), which began a career of holding gold in the company. I've held many different titles (Intercontinental, World Tag Titles, WCW Television Title, ROH Pure Championship), although no WWE World Title, yet. Ironically, perhaps my most personal and best feud did in part revolve around gold (Butch Reed's hair), just not in the form of a title belt. I've had the same name for most of my career (Paul Roma), with one specific match seeing me introduced under a totally different name/persona (Floyd Mayweather). A multi-time Intercontinental Champion, and a foreigner to America's Shores (from Cairo, Egypt), Who Am I?

The Answer is Paul Roma

1. What was to occur at WM 22 if Batista didn't get injured?

2. Do you think a Mysterio vs. Batista match should be Batista's final WWE match?

1. Well i always got the impression that if Batista didn't get injured, and Eddie didn't die, it might have been Orton vs Eddie vs Batista (if perhaps Orton playing Devil's Advocate trying to twist the relationship between the two). Once Eddie died, it looked like they were pushing Batista vs Orton (see backstage promos at Survivor Series 2005, with them arguing who the Smackdown Team Captain was). The other scenario I would have heard about was Rey vs Eddie for the WET as a climax to their feud.

2. Mysterio vs Batista would make sense, especially when considering Rey wouild get a huge rub from beating Batista. If that said it would also be cool to have a new heel beat the 'Animal'. Unlike Flair, Batista should probably still be able to carry a good match.

The Hot Opener: Randy Savage V Chris Jericho- Falls Count Anywhere - Randy Savage

The Tag Match: Demolition V The Legion Of Doom - LOD

The High Flying Match: Eddie Guerrero V Owen Hart V Rey Mysterio V Rob Van Dam - I am torn on this one, I really liked Owen Hart and I am still a huge RVD fan, so I am going with RVD

Note: Whichever man gets the least amount of votes will take the fall.

The Spectacle Match: Christian V CM Punk V Edge V Jeff Hardy V John Morrison V Matt Hardy - Jeff Hardy

The Workrate Match: Kurt Angle V Ricky Steamboat - Ricky Steamboat

The Celebrity Match: Kane V Pete Rose- No Holds Barred - Come on now, the real question is, how fast will Pete Rose get tomstoned? -Kane wins

Bonus Question: Who would you most like to see interfere in this match on Pete Rose's behalf? The Gobbeldy Gooker(just barely worse than Pets's own chicken costume). Seriously though, no preference

The Behemoth Match: Andre The Giant V The Undertaker - Andre The Giant - Taker(speaking as a UT fan that NEVER wants the streak broken) may be undefeated at WM, but nobody could beat Andre at his peak unless he let them. Andre would certainly win.

The Rivalry: Bret Hart v Shawn Michaels: I quit - Bret Hart - The Best There Is, The Best There Was and The Best There Ever Will Be

The Divas Match: Beth Phoenix V Lita V Trish Stratus V Victoria - Trish Stratus, easily, no one else in that match comes close

Hulk Hogan V John Cena V Steve Austin V The Rock V The Ultimate Warrior V Triple H- Elimination Chamber! - wow -this is a hard decision! I am going to say John Cena wins by pinning Hulk Hogan - it could be another passing of the torch moment, as Hogan is and will always be one of the most famous wrestling personalities of all time.

Bonus Question: Who do you want to enter last? I agree with the poster about Warrior entering last - otherwise he wouldn't make it through the whole match - lol!

2. Do you think a Mysterio vs. Batista match should be Batista's final WWE match?

Posted By: Guest#2736 (Guest) on March 24, 2009 at 11:22 PM

Who are you asking these Questions??

This is the comment section.

Posted By: People=Smart (Guest)  on March 25, 2009 at 05:14 PM

have posed this questions several times and have yet to get a response.

Posted By: worthythorn (Guest) on March 25, 2009 at 01:30 AM

Yes, you have asked this question before and 411 ANSWERED IT!!!

Nobody had any idea what you were talking about. They even posted a video to show that there was no "boom" and that it might be the crowd going "ooooooooooooooo" or even "Boooo".

Another reason your question is probably not getting answered(again!) is because you are posting it IN THE COMMENTS SECTION!!!!!!

For a guy who wants a question answered so badly you certainly don't pay attention.

Also the You Suck chant wasn't started by the Fans it was started by Edge.

Posted By: Guest#1691 (Guest) on March 25, 2009 at 09:50 AM

Wrong. It was started by the fans in MSG. Edge was just the first one to acknowledge it.

Posted By: poffo316 (Guest) on March 25, 2009 at 04:30 PM

I dunno.. I seem to recall E&C doing a backstage bit with a kazoo where they inserted it. Almost as funny as their rendition of Benoit's music

"Chris Benoit is here.. and he's really mad.."

savage on commentary thing: he was on commentary with roddy and vince for the undertaker/warrior in the casket thing, and that was 3 days after wm, and savage was weening off of heel tendencies on commentary until he proposed, and he was a total face after that, he wasn't a "heel" persay, cause he never did anything, he just rooted against the good guys like that

The Kansas Jayhawks, the blonde was "Hangman" Bobby Jaggers . . . GOD, I need a life . . .

Mr. Panda, the reason ROH don't need a womens division is because their sister promotion is SHIMMER womens wrestling owned by Dave Prazak and Allison Danger and they share some wrestlers, del ray, mschif, Haze etc, and have access to most of the SHIMMER Roster. Why have a ROH Womens title when the SHIMMER title is very prestegious in it's own respect. Answer is prob Christian, but not definite. And yes, Chris is awesome!!!

I hate to nitpick (wait, no I don't), but the Rock didn't go his whole WWF/E career without getting buried -- there was a period of maybe two or three months in 1997 when, still competing as "Rookie Sensation" Rocky Maivia -- he was jobbing to everything in sight.

He'd just started getting the "Rocky sucks" and "die Rocky die" chants, despite still being a face, after his lackluster match with the Sultan at WrestleMania, and even matching him up against Savio Vega during his Nation of Domination stint wasn't getting the fans on his side. So Rocky dropped the Intercontinental Title to Owen Hart and spent the next few months losing to guys like Mankind, Faarooq and the Headbangers (while teaming with Flash Funk). It wasn't until he got injured and then returned a few months later to turn heel and join the Nation that he started getting a push.

The answer is Christian. He won the LH title in his first match. His most personal feud was with Y2J involving a Canadian dollar. I think he was once introduced with Edge as Los Conquistadors?

Here is what I care about

Behemoth Match - Andre The Giant defeat The Undertaker

UT is not a behemoth by any stretch of the imagination! His billed weight on RAW was 299. Big Show and Khali, and to a pint Kane and Mark Henry are more of a behemoth than UT!

Diva's Match - Trish Stratus defeats Lita, Victoria and Beth Phoenix (pins Beth with The Chick Kick after Stratusfaction)

IMO, Beth has a long way to go before she can realistically be considered in the same category as Trish, Lita and Victoria. She is Chyna(VERY lite). The women mentioned above, along with Molly Holly, Jaqueline and Jazz revolutionized Women's wrestling.

Bret Hart defeats Shawn Michaels

Bret finally gets his Wrestlemania win back. I am not a HBK fan and never will be, but he owes Bret a hell of a lot.

I think the confusion about the Taz thing is that, when Vince didn't know who he was, it was when Raw was invaded by ECW in 1997before Barely Legal, not when Taz joined WWF in late 1999/early 2000.

In our Workrate Match, we see a clinic being put on Ladies and Gentlemen! Ricky The Dragon Steamboat stuns Kurt Angle to win the match!

Chris Jericho

Don't Care

Owen Hart

John Morrison

Ricky Steamboat

Pete Rose* with Gobbledy Gooker interference

Andre the Giant

Bret Hart

Victoria

But all this is only to lead up to the main event. It starts off with Ultimate Warrior and John Cena in the ring, when we have a new record for the fastest loss at Wrestlemania as even the IWC feels sorry for Cena jobbing out to Warrior that quickly and pathetically. We then have some awkward fist pumping time before HHH comes out, but he lasts only a little bit longer than Cena. Back to the fist pumping. By this point this crowd is chanting, "This is B*** Sh**!" Next out is Austin. It's back and forth, kind of seeing how it would be obvious that one could work a lot faster and better than the other, and then out comes the Rock. Stone Cold hits Warrior with a stunner, but Warrior kicks out. Rock hits him with the Rock Bottom, Warrior kicks out. Warrior throws them into the same turnbuckles, hits the double splash and pins them both at the same time, just before Hogan comes out. Warrior hits Hogan a few times before Hogan Hulks up, only to fall prey to the "Finger Poke of Doooooom!!!!". Your winner for some ungodly reason, Warrior.

I can't wait until the ultimate wrestlemania (or whatever its called) is over so the comment section can go back to being a COMMENT SECTION!

150 comments and 3/4 are votes for the wrestlemania thing.

Great. I really care who Guest 4783 picked to enter last in the Royal Rumble.

It's a fun idea, and it would be great if only the voting took place through email.

UHM, so you actually sat there and counted the comments? Lame. You must really feel important, to think anyone other than yourself care what you think. He asked for votes, and did not specify email, so a smart person would deduce he meant in the comments section. Perhaps I am giving you too much credit. Go back to your bridge troll!

P.S. I am now going to get some of my friends to come vote, just to piss you off some more!

Now on to MY votes for Ultimate Wrestlemania!
