411’s Buy or Sell 3.27.09: CHIKARA’s King of Trios Weekend, Tyler Black Missing FIP’s Shows this Weekend, Colt Cabana Returns to Ring of Honor, and More!!
Posted by Michael Bauer on 03.27.2009
This week, the 411 staff looks all over the Indy Scene heading into King of Trios Weeekend as Steve Cook battles Alex Mattis in Buy or Sell!
Welcome everyone to WEEK One Hundred One of BUY or SELL. For those of you who haven't been with us since the beginning, here's the Reader's Digest version of what this column is all about. BUY or SELL is very much like 411's long-running Fact or Fiction column. The main difference is that BUY or SELL focuses on topics like the U.S. Independent scene, Lucha Libre, Japanese Wrestling and pretty much anything else that isn't mainstream wrestling, WWE and or TNA. This allows for these areas to get a bit more press and for you, our loyal readers, to learn even more about the sport of professional wrestling.
Week Number 101's Match-Up:
Here for more than a One Time Deal… Mr. Saturday Morning- Steve Cook!
vs.
Fightning Solo… One Third of the Triple Threat- Alex Mattis !
The upcoming CHIKARA King Of Trios weekend is a bigger US indy event than the ROH Wrestlemania weekend shows.
Steve Cook : SELL. Could King of Trios end up being more enjoyable than ROH's WM weekend shows? It's quite possible, as the cards for KOT look really freaking awesome on paper and CHIKARA traditionally has enjoyable tournaments. However, the bottom line is that ROH's shows are likely to draw a larger attendance number than CHIKARA's shows, and will generate more discussion amongst wrestling fans than the KOT will. This is kind of like arguing that TNA Lockdown is a bigger wrestling event than WWE Wrestlemania. OK, I take that back...I can't be that mean to Quack and the CHIKARArmy. But ROH has a tradition of putting on really strong shows during WM weekend, and hopefully the Pearce regime won't put an end to that.
Alex Mattis : SELL. While the King of Trios event is ridiculously stacked, and probably the biggest weekend in CHIKARA's history I don't think it to be as special as the ROH 'Mania weekend shows. For the past several years ROH's "Supercard of Honor" shows have been some of the biggest and best in US independent wrestling, add on the fact that they're will also be a PPV taping this year it is safe to say that this will be the biggest weekend this year for US indy wrestling. But like I said from the start, this shouldn't take anything away from CHIKARA's event as it is effin' loaded.
1 for 1.
CHIKARA's King Of Trios will be won by a team full of non-regulars with the company.
Steve Cook : BUY. This is 100% BUY! Think of what happened when the Machine Guns came to Ring of Honor over the past two years. First, they faced the Briscoes for the RoH World Tag Team Titles and it added instant credibility to their title reign. Then they came back to face Steen-Erico and it added instant credibility to the status as #1 contenders for the Masked Luchador and Kevin Steen. Do it again here and have the Young Bucks go over them… it's instant credibility and so much more for such a young team.
Alex Mattis : BUY. Because I am picking The Cold Front to win the whole shebang. Al Snow, Glacier & Iceberg are gods among men, and you know this....mannnnnnn. If the Cold Front doesn't pull it out, my second pick is the Death Match Kings. Because the Necro Butcher should win everything ever.
2 for 2.
Chris Hero vs. Chris Harris will probably end up being the worst match in FIP this year.
Steve Cook : SELL. I don't keep up with FIP much these days, but there's gotta be some people down there worse than Hero & Harris. True, the Wildcat isn't what he used to be, and Hero's style is pretty hit or miss, but they should be able to put something together that won't be the worst thing to hit FIP this year. Now, if it was taking place on ECW and it was Braden Walker against Chris Horn...
Alex Mattis : SELL. Geez, a bit harsh here wouldn't you say? I think it is nearly impossible to predict what the "Worst match of the year" is going to be. Some that you think could be dreadful turn out great, and some that look great on paper turn out being the shits (as was evident this past weekend in ROH). First off, I can't label ANYTHING that Chris Hero does as being the "worst" something. I just can't do it Norm! Secondly, just because he had a Gawd-awful stint in the E people need to remember the work Harris put in in TNA. He's an extremely solid worker. Anyone remember the Texas Death Match he had with James Storm? Epic. I'm not saying this match is going to be Warrior-Savage from 'Mania VII (had to make a 'Mania reference seeing as how it's a week a way, plus that's like my favorite match EVA!) but I certainly don't think it will be the "worst match of the year." I don't even think that it will be bad.
3 for 3.
SWITCH~!
FIP's announcement of Tyler Black being out indefinitely due to a backstage attack is ludicrous given that he still wrestling for ROH.
Alex Mattis : BUY. Yep, this is pretty silly. While I understand it, as FIP is totally old school and likes to work stuff like this, we have to face it that this is the age of the internet and the age of the smarks. They'll be bitch and moanin-a-plenty from many of the Florida fans I'm sure, but they'll just have to deal with it. I applaud FIP for doing such old school stuff like this, but in this modern era of wrestling it just doesn't work.
Steve Cook : SELL. Come on man, what's wrong with a little kayfabe every now and then? If Black isn't going to be able to make it down to Florida for a little while, it's better that they come up with some sort of an excuse to explain his absence. Yeah, we know it's a load of B.S., but I've got no problem with them trying to build an angle even if it's stretching the truth a little bit. After all, that's what wrestling was built on.
3 for 4.
Now that he has returned to Ring of Honor, Colt Cabana will become RoH World Champion.
Alex Mattis : BUY. I knew at "Good Times, Great Memories" when Colt said that if he ever came back to Ring Of Honor that he would gun after the world title, he would win it. Now that being said, don't expect this to happen ASAP. I think that Colt is in ROH for another lengthy run that will eventually steer him to the strap. I don't think he'll be the one to dethrone Nigel but I do see him attaining what he never got the first time around.
Steve Cook : SELL. You can't bring Boom Boom back and bounce him right into the champion role. Although I'm a big Cabana fan and would love to see him win the title at some point, it's usually not a good idea to take a guy that was recently nothing more than a jobber on Smackdown and make him your world champ. I don't think that would impress many of the "casual" fans ROH would like to win over. Gotta wipe the jobber stink off of Colt before we start talking about titles.
3 for 5.
If not for Nigel's latest injury, he would have broken Samoa Joe's record for RoH World Title reign length.
Alex Mattis : BUY. Total buy here. My buddy and I were just recently talking about this the other day. It is quite unfortunate that this happened as I expected him to hold onto the title until the winter of this year. I expect him, much like Danielson, to lose it at Final Battle after a huge build. His title run could last longer than Joe's because the longer his reign is the more people hate him and think that he could lose it at anytime, leading to more people tuning in and buying tickets, so on and so forth, the kind of things that use to make wrestling so great. At this point all the fans know he is injured and is going to need a long layoff so they're expect him to drop it very soon, that being the case Nigel should admit to this, forfeit the belt and request an immediate title shot upon returning.
Steve Cook : BUY. I say this because none of the challengers for the ROH title seem like they're ready to take the reins from Nigel. Tyler Black should have done it awhile back, but they've kinda killed him with the 49 minute draw nonsense and having him lose every big match he's in. Danielson seems to not really be in the title picture at this point. I think Aries has a title shot coming to him, but I can't say I'd be thrilled with him as champ again. And Jerry Lynn...the less said, the better. I think Nigel probably should have lost the title by now, but they really haven't built up many viable alternatives.
4 for 6.
The One Hundred First edition of BUY or SELL finishes at 4 for 6! Stay tuned for next week as two more people will go head to head with a whole new set of topics.
Nigel never would of beat my reign! I'll kill him with my machete!!!

Well, considering Nigel is now wrestling a tag match at the PPV, I think he's still got a shot at Joe's reign...keep him limited in tags and squashes before he gets better (if he doesn't need surgery) and then have him finally drop the strap to Tyler Black (there is no other man on the roster deserving enough, especially if Danielson is jumping ship in May).

does ROH have (and enforce) a rule that the champ must defend the title within a month or 2???

Colt Cabana as next ROH champ?
Yeah, I guess I can see pros and cons either way. My initial thought was that it would be analagous to the "TNA problem" where a guy comes in from WWE and wins the top prize, regardless of his former card placement with his previous employer. On the other hand, this is Cabana and Nigel we're talking about and the pair of them have had more than their share of classic matchups. That could be referenced and I think you could create a believable build to a title win for Colt off of it.

I hope Nigel finally drops the belt at the PPV after Tyler Black cashes in!

I could be wrong, but I'm almost positive I read a report stating that he does need surgery, and will be out for 6 months following.

Just for the record, the "WWE stentch" is really barely on Cabana. Recall that he made a single-digit number of appearances with a generic name and no attention at all. I seriously doubt that any casual fan would care, if even notice, that he was on Smackdown a couple times in a couple months. He was that far under the radar. That said, Colt Cabana most definitely owns all and should leap to the top of the ROH card as quickly as possible.

re:cabana
They took James Gibson/noble, and make him champion. I think he had way more "jobber stink" on him than Colt. I don't think most casual fans of WWE knew who Scott Goldman was. Everybody loves Colt Cabana in ROH. The stink will wash off fast. Just don't let JBL in the shower to help scrub.

Please read the question:
Now that he has returned to Ring of Honor, Colt Cabana will become RoH World Champion.
That does not state that he will be the NEXT RoH World Champion.
