411's Countdown to Wrestlemania 25: The Top 25 Wrestlers in Wrestlemania History
Posted by Dustin James on 04.02.2009

Thanks to John Meehan for creating this year's logo…

You can tell that Spring is here. Not because the snow is going away, not because the flowers are coming out, not because the weather is starting to warm up a bit. No. You can tell that Spring is here because it's time for the WWE's annual "Super Bowl" of wrestling.....Wrestlemania. This year is a little special because we are marking the 25th anniversary of Vince McMahon's creation. Over the years we have witnessed plenty of great matches featuring plenty of great wrestlers.....but who are the top 25 wrestlers in Wrestlemania history according to THIS GUY? Well, first of all.....let me share how I voted on this thing:

- I gave HUGE points for the amount of Wrestlemania appearances. Let's face it. You can't be a Wrestlemania legend without APPEARING at Wrestlemania, so I gave massive kudos to those who were around more.

- Win/loss record. This one was kind of big for me. Someone like The Undertaker may not have faced the best competition, but the man is 16-0 at Wrestlemania. There's no doubt he should appear on top of everyone's list. Yet, someone like The Big Show has appeared at 8 Wrestlemania's....but the man has only won once. That's going to hurt him when it comes to voting time.

- Performances. I gave the wrestler's a nod for both title wins and big wins.

- Personal bias. We all have some.

And with that......here's MY list.....

My Top 25 Wrestlers in Wrestlemania History

Honorable Mentions:

(These guy's almost made the cut, but just came up short!)

The Big Show (1-7)

Wrestlemania Appearances:

- Lost to Mankind - Wrestlemania 15

- Lost to HHH - Wrestlemania 2000

- Lost to Kane - Wrestlemania 17

- Lost to The Undertaker - Wrestlemania 19

- Lost to John Cena - Wrestlemania 20

- Lost to Akebono - Wrestlemania 21

- Defeated Chris Masters and Carlito - Wrestlemania 22 (Kane was his tag team partner)

- Lost to Floyd Mayweather - Wrestlemania 24

Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake (3-2-2)

Wrestlemania Appearances:

- Fought David Sammartino to a no contest - Wrestlemania 1

- Lost to The British Bulldogs - Wrestlemania 2 (Greg Valentine was his tag team partner)

- Defeated The Rougeau Brothers - Wrestlemania 3 (Greg Valentine was his tag team partner)

- Defeated The Honky Tonk Man - Wrestlemania 4

- Fought Ted DiBiase to a double count-out - Wrestlemania 5

- Defeated Mr. Perfect - Wrestlemania 6

- Lost to Money Inc. - Wrestlemania 9 - (Hulk Hogan was his tag team partner)

Greg "The Hammer" Valentine (2-5)

Wrestlemania Appearances:

- Lost to Junkyard Dog - Wrestlemania 1

- Lost to The British Bulldogs - Wrestlemania 2 (Brutus Beefcake was his tag team partner)

- Defeated The Rougeau Brothers - Wrestlemania 3 (Brutus Beefcake was his tag team partner)

- Defeated Ricky Steamboat - Wrestlemania 4

- Lost to Randy Savage - Wrestlemania 4

- Lost to The Hart Foundation - Wrestlemania 5 (Honky Tonk Man was his tag team partner)

- Lost to Earthquake - Wrestlemania 7

"Rowdy" Roddy Piper (2-3-1)

Wrestlemania Appearances:

- Lost to Hulk Hogan and Mr. T - Wrestlemania 1 (Paul Orndorff was his tag team partner)

- Lost to Mr. T in a boxing match - Wrestlemania 2

- Defeated "Adorable" Adrian Adonis - Wrestlemania 3

- Fought Bad News Brown to a no contest - Wrestlemania 6

- Lost to Bret Hart - Wrestlemania 8

- Defeated Goldust - Wrestlemania 12

Jacques Rougeau (1-6)

Wrestlemania Appearances:

- Lost to The Dream Team - Wrestlemania 3 (Ray Rougeau was his tag team partner)

- Lost to Bad News Brown in a Battle Royal - Wrestlemania 4

- Lost to The Bushwackers - Wrestlemania 5 (Ray Rougeau was his tag team partner)

- Defeated Tito Santana - Wrestlemania 7

- Lost to Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Sgt. Slaughter, Virgil, and Big Boss Man - Wrestlemania 8 (Repo Man, and The Nasty Boys were his tag team partners)

- Lost to Men on a Mission - Wrestlemania 10 (Pierre was his tag team partner)

- Lost to the Legion of Doom in a Tag Team Battle Royal - Wrestlemania 14 (Pierre was his tag team partner)

And now, it's time for my top 25 wrestlers in Wrestlemania history!.......

25) Yokozana (3-3)

Wrestlemania Appearances:

- Defeated Bret Hart - Wrestlemania 9

- Lost to Hulk Hogan - Wrestlemania 9

- Defeated Lex Luger via DQ - Wrestlemania 10

- Lost to Bret Hart - Wrestlemania 10

- Defeated The Smoking Gunns - Wrestlemania 11 (Owen Hart was his tag team partner)

- Lost to Owen Hart, British Bulldog, and Vader - Wrestlemania 12 (Jake Roberts and Ahmed Johnson were his tag team partners)

Comments: Yoko had a short run in the WWE, but his time at Wrestlemania was memorable. Not only did he fight twice at Wrestlemania 9, but he also fought twice the very next year at Wrestlemania 10. Something has to be said about a man willing to put his WWE title on the line twice in one night in two separate years.

24) Tito Santana (1-7)

Wrestlemania Appearances:

- Defeated The Executioner - Wrestlemania 1

- Lost to Terry and Hoss Funk - Wrestlemania 2

- Lost to The Hart Foundation and Danny Davis - Wrestlemania 3 (The British Bulldogs were his tag team partners)

- Lost to Demolition - Wrestlemania 4 (Rick Martel was his tag team partner)

- Lost to The Brain Busters - Wrestlemania 5 (Rick Martel was his tag team partner)

- Lost to The Barbarian - Wrestlemania 6

- Lost to The Mountie - Wrestlemania 7

- Lost to Shawn Michaels - Wrestlemania 8

Comments: Poor Tito Santana. After defeating The Executioner (not Terry Gordy) at Wrestlemania 1, Santana then appeared at every Wrestlemania until Wrestlemania 9 (which is widely considered the "worst" Wrestlemania of all-time, coincidence?) and LOST his match! That's right, the man is a collective 1-7 at the big show. So, why is he ranked here? Because the fact that he has made 8 appearances at Wrestlemania. True, he has the same record as The Big Show, but Santana never fought any celebrities. ARRIBA!

23) John Cena (4-1)

Wrestlemania Appearances:

- Defeated The Big Show - Wrestlemania 20

- Defeated JBL - Wrestlemania 21

- Defeated HHH - Wrestlemania 22

- Defeated Shawn Michaels - Wrestlemania 23

- Lost to Randy Orton - Wrestlemania 24

Comments: With the way that Cena is going right now in his WWE career, by the time he retires he could very well be in the top 10 of this list.Cena will face Edge (who has a great WM record) and The Big Show (who doesn't) this year in a three-way fight for the heavyweight title and could very well improve his record to 5-1.

22) Ultimate Warrior (4-1)

Wrestlemania Appearances:

- Defeated Hercules - Wrestlemania 4

- Lost to Rick Rude - Wrestlemania 5

- Defeated Hulk Hogan - Wrestlemania 6

- Defeated Randy Savage - Wrestlemania 7

- Defeated HHH - Wrestlemania 12

Comments: It's hard for me not to rank The Ultimate Warrior higher on this list due to my personal fanboyism towards the man as a kid, but the truth is....he was never in the WWE long enough to build up a great Wrestlemania reputation beyond his matches with Hogan and Savage. Those two matches alone get Warrior the 22nd ranking on this list.

21) The British Bulldog (4-2-1)

Wrestlemania Appearances:

- Defeated Brutus Beefcake and Greg "The Hammer" Valentine - Wrestlemania 2 (Dynamite Kid was his tag team partner)

- Lost to The Hart Foundation and Danny Davis - Wrestlemania 3 (Dynamite Kid and Tito Santana were his partners)

- Lost to The Islanders and Bobby "The Brain" Heenan - Wrestlemania 4 (Dynamite Kid and Koko B. Ware were his partners)

- Defeated The Warlord - Wrestlemania 7

- Defeated Jacob and Eli Blu - Wrestlemania 10 (Lex Luger was his tag team partner)

- Defeated Yokozana, Jake "The Snake" Roberts, and Ahmed Johnson - Wrestlemania 12 (Owen Hart and Vader were his tag team partners)

- Fought Mankind and Vader to a double count-out - Wrestlemania 13 (Owen Hart was his tag team partner)

Comments: Davey Boy Smith appeared at 7 Wrestlemania's, yet fought in only one singles match during his entire stay with the WWE at the big show. Bulldog never actually competed in any classic encounters at Mania, yet his record and number of appearances is still impressive.

20) Jake "The Snake" Roberts (3-4-1)

Wrestlemania Appearances:

- Defeated George Wells - Wrestlemania 2

- Lost to Honky Tonk Man - Wrestlemania 3

- Fought Rick Rude in a draw - Wrestlemania 4

- Defeated Andre The Giant - Wrestlemania 5

- Lost to Ted DiBiase - Wrestlemania 6

- Defeated Rick "The Model" Martel - Wrestlemania 7

- Lost to The Undertaker - Wrestlemania 8

- Lost to Owen Hart, British Bulldog, and Vader - Wrestlemania 12 (Yokozana and Ahmed Johnson were his tag team partners)

Comments: Jake "The Snake" Roberts started his career off with a BANG at Wrestlemania 2 with a win over George Wells (WHO???) and ended it at Wrestlemania 12 as a tag team partner of Yokozana and Ahmed Johnson (now THAT'S a tag team!). Needless to say Roberts Wrestlemania career isn't exactly going to set the world on fire, but his number of appearances is damn impressive at 8.

19) Andre The Giant (2-3-1)

Wrestlemania Appearances:

- Defeated Big John Studd - Wrestlemania 1

- Defeated 19 other superstars in a WWE/NFL Battle Royal - Wrestlemania 2

- Lost to Hulk Hogan - Wrestlemania 3

- Fought Hulk Hogan in a double DQ match - Wrestlemania 4

- Lost to Jake "The Snake" Roberts - Wrestlemania 5

- Lost to Demolition - Wrestlemania 6 (Haku was his tag team partner)

Comments: Two words..........Wrestlemania 3. What else do you need to justify Andre being on this list?

18) JBL (3-6)

Wrestlemania Appearances:

- Lost to The Headbangers - Wrestlemania 13

- Lost to The Legion of Doom in a Tag Team Battle Royal - Wrestlemania 14 (Chainz was his tag team partner)

- Lost to Hardcore Holly in a Hardcore Battle Royal - Wrestlemania 2000

- Defeated The Right To Censor - Wrestlemania 17 (Faarooq and Tazz were his tag team partners)

- Lost to Billy and Chuck - Wrestlemania 18

- Lost to Scotty 2 Hotty and Rikishi - Wrestlemania 20

- Lost to John Cena - Wrestlemania 21

- Defeated Chris Benoit - Wrestlemania 22

- Defeated Finlay - Wrestlemania 24

Comments: Why is JBL ranked here? Because there are only 7 other wrestlers in WWE history that have fought at more Wrestlemania's than JBL has. Those men would be HBK, Randy Savage, Hulk Hogan, Bret Hart, Undertaker, Kane, and HHH. Not bad company at all. This may be JBL's last Wrestlemania this year, so make sure you give the man a nice standing ovation to show your appreciation for all his work.....are not.

17) Christian (4-2)

Wrestlemania Appearances:

- Defeated The Hardy Boyz and The Dudley Boys - Wrestlemania 2000 (Edge was his tag team partner)

- Defeated The Hardy Boyz and The Dudley Boys - Wrestlemania 17 (Edge was his tag team partner)

- Lost to Diamond Dallas Page - Wrestlemania 18

- Defeated Spike Dudley, Hurricane, Molly Holly, and Maven to win the WWE Hardcore Championship - Wrestlemania 18

- Defeated Chris Jericho - Wrestlemania 20

- Lost to Edge - Wrestlemania 21

Comments: Christian is THE MAN when it comes to ladder matches at Wrestlemania. So that's good news for us this year seeing as he's competing in the "Money In The Bank" match. If history proves correct, Christian will indeed become "Mr. Money In The Bank" this year and continue to build on his WM legacy.

16) Kurt Angle (3-5)

Wrestlemania Appearances:

- Lost to Chris Benoit and Chris Jericho - Wrestlemania 2000 (Match was a triple threat match for both the IC title and European title, Angle was never pinned)

- Lost to Chris Benoit and Chris Jericho - Wrestlemania 2000 (Match was a triple threat match for both the IC title and European title, Angle was never pinned)

- Defeated Chris Benoit - Wrestlemania 17

- Defeated Kane - Wrestlemania 18

- Lost to Brock Lesnar - Wrestlemania 19

- Lost to Eddie Guerrero - Wrestlemania 20

- Defeated Shawn Michaels - Wrestlemania 21

- Lost to Rey Mysterio - Wrestlemania 22

Comments: I really wanted to rank Kurt Angle higher due to the fact that I was such a huge fan of his WWE run and some of his performances at Wrestlemania were just downright amazing (19 and 21 in particular), but the truth is....the guy's above him on this list just scream "Wrestlemania" to me more than Angle does. That's just the way the cookie crumbles.

15) Mick Foley (2-3-1)

Wrestlemania Appearances:

- Fought Owen Hart and The British Bulldog to a double count-out - Wrestlemania 13 (Vader was his tag team partner)

- Defeated New Age Outlaws - Wrestlemania 14 (Terry Funk was his tag team partner)

- Defeated The Big Show - Wrestlemania 15

- Lost to HHH - Wrestlemania 2000

- Lost to Randy Orton, Batista, and Ric Flair - Wrestlemania 20 (The Rock was his tag team partner)

- Lost to Edge - Wrestlemania 22

Comments: Foley didn't make a lot of appearances at Wrestlemania but the ones that he did compete at, he tried his best to tear the house down. Don't believe me? Just check out his match with Edge at Wrestlemania 22.

14) Ted DiBiase (4-3-1)

Wrestlemania Appearances:

- Defeated Hacksaw Jim Duggan - Wrestlemania 4

- Defeated Don Muraco - Wrestlemania 4

- Lost to Randy Savage - Wrestlemania 4

- Fought Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake to a double count-out - Wrestlemania 5

- Defeated Jake "The Snake" Roberts - Wrestlemania 6

- Lost to Virgil - Wrestlemania 7

- Lost to The Natural Disasters - Wrestlemania 8 (I.R.S. was his tag team partner)

- Defeated Hulk Hogan and Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake - Wrestlemania 9

Comments: "Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase would have cracked my top ten, but that loss to Virgil at Wrestlemania 7 goes over like a fart in church.

13) Kane (5-5)

Wrestlemania Appearances:

- Lost to The Undertaker - Wrestlemania 14

- Defeated HHH - Wrestlemania 15

- Defeated Road Dogg and X-Pac - Wrestlemania 2000

- Defeated The Big Show and Raven to win the WWE Hardcore Championship - Wrestlemania 17

- Lost to Kurt Angle - Wrestlemania 18

- Lost to The Undertaker - Wrestlemania 20

- Lost to Edge - Wrestlemania 21

- Defeated Chris Masters and Carlito - Wrestlemania 22 (Big Show was his tag team partner)

- Lost to The Great Khali - Wrestlemania 23

- Defeated Chavo Guerrero - Wrestlemania 24

Comments: While Kane's Wrestlemania legacy is nowhere near as impressive as his "brother's", Kane has had his chances at the big show. He's fought The Undertaker twice already at Mania and I wouldn't be shocked if they did it again one more time before the two of them retired. Oh, Kane also got bonus points from me for his destruction of Pete Rose at numerous Wrestlemania's....

12) Chris Jericho (2-6)

Wrestlemania Appearances:

- Defeated Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle to win the WWE European Championship - Wrestlemania 2000 (Match was a triple threat match for both the IC title and European title)

- Lost to Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle - Wrestlemania 2000 (Match was a triple threat match for both the IC title and European title)

- Defeated William Regal - Wrestlemania 17

- Lost to HHH - Wrestlemania 18

- Lost to Shawn Michaels - Wrestlemania 19

- Lost to Christian - Wrestlemania 20

- Lost to Edge - Wrestlemania 21

- Lost to CM Punk - Wrestlemania 24

Comments: Wrestlemania is Jericho.....and by the time this man retires, that could indeed be true.

11) Edge (5-2)

Wrestlemania Appearances:

- Defeated The Hardy Boyz and The Dudley Boys - Wrestlemania 2000 (Christian was his tag team partner)

- Defeated The Hardy Boyz and The Dudley Boys - Wrestlemania 17 (Christian was his tag team partner)

- Defeated Booker T - Wrestlemania 18

- Defeated Chris Benoit, Shelton Benjamin, Chris Jericho, Christian, and Kane - Wrestlemania 21

- Defeated Mick Foley - Wrestlemania 22

- Lost to Ken Kennedy - Wrestlemania 23

- Lost to The Undertaker - Wrestlemania 24

Comments: Poor Edge. After starting out his Wrestlemania career with an impressive 5-0 record, he dropped his "Money In The Bank" match to Ken Kennedy and then lost to The Undertaker last year. Edge needs to get back on the winning side of things at Mania, but that may be tough considering he's facing The Big Show and John Cena this year in a three way match.

10) Owen Hart (5-2-1)

Wrestlemania Appearances:

- Lost to Mr. Perfect - Wrestlemania 5

- Defeated Skinner - Wrestlemania 8

- Defeated Bret Hart - Wrestlemania 10

- Defeated The Smoking Gunns - Wrestlemania 11 (Yokozana was his tag team partner)

- Defeated Yokozana, Jake "The Snake" Roberts, and Ahmed Johnson - Wrestlemania 12 (British Bulldog and Vader were his tag team partners)

- Fought Mankind and Vader to a double count-out - Wrestlemania 13 (British Bulldog was his tag team partner)

- Lost to HHH - Wrestlemania 14

- Defeated Test and D'Lo Brown - Wrestlemania 15 (Jeff Jarrett was his tag team partner)

Comments: Listen, I'm a huge Owen Hart fan and I gotta admit a little bias on this one. Perhaps the guy wouldn't make a majority of people's lists, but his match with Bret Hart at Wrestlemania 10 is a top 10 Wrestlemania match on my list. Owen had a pretty long career with the WWE and appeared at 8 Wrestlemania's before his untimely death. Who knows where Owen would have landed on this list if he was still alive today.....

9) Chris Benoit (3-5)

Wrestlemania Appearances:

- Defeated Chris Jericho and Kurt Angle to win the WWE Intercontinental Championship - Wrestlemania 2000 (Match was a triple threat match for both the IC title and European title)

- Lost to Chris Jericho and Kurt Angle - Wrestlemania 2000 (Match was a triple threat match for both the IC title and European title)

- Lost to Kurt Angle - Wrestlemania 17

- Lost to Team Angle - Wrestlemania 19 (Rhyno was his tag team partner)

- Defeated HHH and Shawn Michaels - Wrestlemania 20

- Lost to Edge - Wrestlemania 21

- Lost to JBL - Wrestlemania 22

- Defeated MVP - Wrestlemania 23

Comments: Ohhh nooo! Controversy! Some people wouldn't rank Benoit on their lists due to "you know what", but I will not hold it against the man when it comes to this list. Benoit's match at Wrestlemania 20 with HBK and HHH remains one of my all-time favorite Wrestlemania matches. That's not the only reason Benoit makes the top 10 though. The guy "brought it" in every fight he participated in. That's really all I have to say about this man....

8) The Rock (4-4)

Wrestlemania Appearances:

- Defeated The Sultan - Wrestlemania 13

- Defeated Ken Shamrock - Wrestlemania 14

- Lost to Steve Austin - Wrestlemania 15

- Lost to HHH - Wrestlemania 2000

- Lost to Steve Austin - Wrestlemania 17

- Defeated Hulk Hogan - Wrestlemania 18

- Defeated Steve Austin - Wrestlemania 19

- Lost to Randy Orton, Batista, and Ric Flair - Wrestlemania 20

Comments: The Rock is my all-time favorite wrestler. It's not Hulk Hogan, it's not Ric Flair, it's not Steve Austin. It's The Rock. The Rock was the reason the "Attitude era" was special to me. Whether it was his cool moves, his cool promos, or his awesome entrance music....I was hooked. The Rock's Wrestlemania career started off slow with a win over The Sultan (Rikishi), but by the time his career was over, the man was putting over Randy Orton and Batista. I sure do miss The Rock and as much as I love seeing him succeed in Hollywood, I wish he never would have left the squared circle.

7) Steve Austin (5-2)

Wrestlemania Appearances:

- Defeated Savio Vega - Wrestlemania 12

- Lost to Bret Hart - Wrestlemania 13

- Defeated Shawn Michaels - Wrestlemania 14

- Defeated The Rock - Wrestlemania 15

- Defeated The Rock - Wrestlemania 17

- Defeated Scott Hall - Wrestlemania 18

- Lost to The Rock - Wrestlemania 19

Comments: "Stone Cold"s Wrestlemania memories are legendary. He passed out at Wrestlemania 13 (thanks for mentioning the correction!) in dramatic fashion. He defeated HBK to win his title and then we got to see Mike Tyson join the "Cold Stone" fan club. The man also holds 2 victories over The Rock and if not for a neck injury, Austin may very well have cracked the top 5 here.

6) HHH (5-7)

Wrestlemania Appearances:

- Lost to The Ultimate Warrior - Wrestlemania 12

- Defeated Goldust - Wrestlemania 13

- Defeated Owen Hart - Wrestlemania 14

- Lost to Kane - Wrestlemania 15

- Defeated The Rock, Mick Foley, and The Big Show - Wrestlemania 2000

- Lost to The Undertaker - Wrestlemania 17

- Defeated Chris Jericho - Wrestlemania 18

- Defeated Booker T - Wrestlemania 19

- Lost to Chris Benoit - Wrestlemania 20

- Lost to Batista - Wrestlemania 21

- Lost to John Cena - Wrestlemania 22

- Lost to Randy Orton - Wrestlemania 24

Comments: Who said HHH doesn't like to lose? The man is 0-4 in the last few Wrestlemania's, but I guess that kind of makes sense for a man who started out his Wrestlemania career by losing to the Ultimate Warrior in around a minute. One thing is for sure with HHH, he has been a consistently great performer at Wrestlemania and is one of few who have performed in over double digit Wrestlemania's. If HHH had a better win/loss record at the WWE's big show he probably would've been ranked higher on my list.

5) Randy Savage (7-4)

Wrestlemania Appearances:

- Defeated George "The Animal" Steele - Wrestlemania 2

- Lost to Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat - Wrestlemania 3

- Defeated Butch Reed - Wrestlemania 4

- Defeated Greg "The Hammer" Valentine - Wrestlemania 4

- Defeated One Man Gang - Wrestlemania 4

- Defeated Ted DiBiase - Wrestlemania 4

- Lost to Hulk Hogan - Wrestlemania 5

- Lost to Dusty Rhodes and Sapphire - Wrestlemania 6 (Queen Sherri was his tag team partner)

- Lost to The Ultimate Warrior - Wrestlemania 7

- Defeated Ric Flair - Wrestlemania 8

- Defeated Crush - Wrestlemania 10

Comments: A lot of people can't think Wrestlemania and not think about Randy "Macho Man" Savage. Savage has had some tremendous Wrestlemania moments. First he had one of the greatest matches I have ever seen against Ricky Steamboat at Wrestlemania 3, then he won the WWE title at Wrestlemania 4 and held it until the next year when he lost it to Hulk Hogan at Wrestlemania 5. Then you have his memorable "career" match with Ultimate Warrior at Wrestlemania 7. It's really hard to argue that Savage doesn't deserve a spot in the top 5.

4) Bret Hart (7-6)

Wrestlemania Appearances:

- Lost to Andre The Giant in a WWE/NFL Battle Royal - Wrestlemania 2

- Defeated The British Bulldogs and Tito Santana - Wrestlemania 3 (Jim Neidhart and Danny Davis were his tag team partners)

- Lost to Bad News Brown in a Battle Royal - Wrestlemania 4

- Defeated Honky Tonk Man and Greg Valentine - Wrestlemania 5 (Jim Neidhart was his tag team partner)

- Defeated The Bolsheviks - Wrestlemania 6 (Jim Neidhart was his tag team partner)

- Lost to The Nasty Boys - Wrestlemania 7 (Jim Neidhart was his tag team partner)

- Defeated "Rowdy" Roddy Piper - Wrestlemania 8

- Lost to Yokozana - Wrestlemania 9

- Lost to Owen Hart - Wrestlemania 10

- Defeated Yokozana - Wrestlemania 10

- Defeated Bob Backlund - Wrestlemania 11

- Lost to Shawn Michaels - Wrestlemania 12

- Defeated Steve Austin - Wrestlemania 13

Comments: Bret Hart appeared in 12 Wrestlemania's during his long WWE career, which is pretty damn impressive. Whether you discuss Hart's unbelievable match with his brother Owen at Wrestlemania 10 or his instant classics with Shawn Michaels and Steve Austin, one thing is for sure....the man truly was the "best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be".

3) Hulk Hogan (8-3-1)

Wrestlemania Appearances:

- Defeated "Rowdy" Roddy Piper and "Mr Wonderful" Paul Orndorff - Wrestlemania 1 (Mr. T was his tag team partner)

- Defeated King Kong Bundy - Wrestlemania 2

- Defeated Andre The Giant - Wrestlemania 3

- Fought Andre The Giant in a Double DQ - Wrestlemania 4

- Defeated Randy Savage - Wrestlemania 5

- Lost to The Ultimate Warrior - Wrestlemania 6

- Defeated Sgt. Slaughter - Wrestlemania 7

- Defeated Sycho Sid - Wrestlemania 8

- Lost to Money Inc. - Wrestlemania 9 (Brutus Beefcake was his tag team partner)

- Defeated Yokozana - Wrestlemania 9

- Lost to The Rock - Wrestlemania 18

- Defeated Vince McMahon - Wrestlemania 19

Comments: For years Wrestlemania WAS Hogan, but times have changed and people have jumped ahead of the icon. Still, you can't deny Hogan's role in making Wrestlemania what it is today. The man was the reason the people came out to see Wrestlemania 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc etc etc. If by some miracle Hogan didn't have as big of an ego as he has, the man honestly could have wrestled at every single Wrestlemania barring some kind of injury. While I was never the biggest Hogan fan, even I can't deny the guy's greatness. However, there are two men ranked above him on this list......

2) Shawn Michaels (6-9)

Wrestlemania Appearances:

- Lost to The Twin Towers - Wrestlemania 5 (Marty Jannetty was his tag team partner)

- Lost to The Orient Express - Wrestlemania 6 (Marty Jannetty was his tag team partner)

- Defeated Haku and The Barbarian - Wrestlemania 7 (Marty Jannetty was his tag team partner)

- Defeated Tito Santana - Wrestlemania 8

- Lost to Tatanka - Wrestlemania 9

- Lost to Razor Ramon - Wrestlemania 10

- Lost to Diesel - Wrestlemania 11

- Defeated Bret Hart - Wrestlemania 12

- Lost to Steve Austin - Wrestlemania 14

- Defeated Chris Jericho - Wrestlemania 19

- Lost to Chris Benoit - Wrestlemania 20

- Lost to Kurt Angle - Wrestlemania 21

- Defeated Vince McMahon - Wrestlemania 22

- Lost to John Cena - Wrestlemania 23

- Defeated Ric Flair - Wrestlemania 24

Comments: And yes, HBK grabs the #2 spot. It really shouldn't be that much of a surprise. HBK has been THE performer at Wrestlemania over the years. You can ramble on about his matches with Razor Ramon (LADDER FTW~!), Bret Hart (one of few iron man matches I can re-watch), Austin (Tyson crotch chops!), Jericho, Benoit & HHH, Angle, and Ric Flair for HOURS. If Michaels is apart of any Wrestlemania, chances are you are in for a show. HBK will get his "toughest" test to date this weekend at Wrestlemania when he faces this man.........

1) The Undertaker (16-0)

Wrestlemania Appearances:

- Defeated Jimmy Snuka - Wrestlemania 7

- Defeated Jake "The Snake" Roberts - Wrestlemania 8

- Defeated Giant Gonzales - Wrestlemania 9

- Defeated King Kong Bundy - Wrestlemania 11

- Defeated Diesel - Wrestlemania 12

- Defeated Sycho Sid - Wrestlemania 13

- Defeated Kane - Wrestlemania 14

- Defeated Big Boss Man - Wrestlemania 15

- Defeated HHH - Wrestlemania 17

- Defeated Ric Flair - Wrestlemania 18

- Defeated Big Show and A-Train - Wrestlemania 19

- Defeated Kane - Wrestlemania 20

- Defeated Randy Orton - Wrestlemania 21

- Defeated Mark Henry - Wrestlemania 22

- Defeated Batista - Wrestlemania 23

- Defeated Edge - Wrestlemania 24

Comments: Really? Is anyone really shocked at this? The Undertaker IS Wrestlemania. He may not have the most impressive resume as far as opponents go, but the man has fought at over 16 Wrestlemania's and holds a victory at every single one of them. Can he defeat HBK this weekend and make it 17 in a row? We shall see.......

Bret Hart didn't face Owen in a cage at WM X. It was the opener but it wasn't in a cage. He did beat Owen in a cage but that was at SummerSlam '94. Nice list. I wonder, if HBK goes over the Taker on Sunday, if he'll take over the #1 spot then.

Bret Hart's match at WM10 against Owen wasn't a cage match.

You've GOT to Rank Piper higher than an honorable mention. The Antagonist in the main event to start them all, headlined a location in Wrestlemania II, and that Adonnis match is one of the three "wrestlemania moments" of Wrestlemania III but overshadowed by the everlastingly enduring IC and World title matches.

I'd also take issue with Hunter over Austin. Austin wrestled in the biggest match at 4 Wrestlemania's, winning the title in three of them, while HHH had a hard time keeping his heat, even when in the main event like at Wrestlemania 18.

And you HAVE to put Hogan over Michaels. 8 times a headliner proper, and two more times, 9 and 18, he was the story of the night. While Michaels record kangaroos around and he has only main evented 4 times.

as far as benoit goes, i'll put it this way: if jimmy page went out and robbed a bank, i'm damn sure not gonna throw away all of my led zeppelin records.
and trust me when i say, i respected the fuck out of chris benoit while he was alive and "well" although i was NEVER a fan of his character. the guy always did everything he could to entertain us, and typically did just that. even though i love the triple threat from XX, the first mitb is my favorite benoit moment/performance. you HAVE to put him on this list, although i think he's a little bit high.
let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater... or suffocate him with a pillow for that matter.
secondly, am i the only person that thinks that "the streak" is the most overrated thing in professional wrestling(can you tell i'm an hbk mark?)??
it'll all started by luck, that's a fact. it kept going with just that; luck. i just don't find it impressive that while shawn michaels was carrying kevin nash to a decent match, 'taker went over bundy, ohhhh... i could give quite a few of these examples but i won't. and yeah, i'm a little bitter about the fact that michaels is counting the lights sunday(i'm not giving up hope though). but that doesn't change how i've always felt about "the streak". people(especially 'taker fans) like to treat this as the one thing that's not kayfabe.
all of undertaker's classic bouts have come in the past four years with the exception of x-7.
michaels?? don't get me started.
is this column kayfabe or reality?? i'm not sure.
great read though.

Blasphemy!!! Hogan #1, taker#2, shawn#3.

The undefeated streak means something but Hogan put mania on the map. The guy was the main event attraction at 10 count them 10 WrestleMania's. Taker, Shawn Austin,Rock,HHH...no one else has come close to the Hulkster.
I've been watching wrestling for over 25 years. I've seen a lot of characters come and go. The truth is this the true mr WrestleMania is Hulk Hogan. All of his accomplishments trump the streak(by the way, the streak has had a few clunkers in there...giant gonzales, mark henry for example). Simply put, Hulk Hogan is the number one wrestler in WrestleMania history PERIOD!

I can honestly tell you that if the Undertaker gets beaten, then I have watched the last wrestlemania in my house.

Sure csonkamaniac, if Jimmy Page robbed a bank I wouldn't throw away my Led Zeppelin records either. However, Chris Benoit didn't rob a bank, he murdered his wife, his son, and then killed himself. There's a pretty big difference between the two. I'm glad for all the fans that can "get past" this fact and "enjoy his matches for what they are." But I can't. It's like seeing OJ Simpson in The Naked Gun. Every time I pop in an older DVD and I hear Benoit say "I ruptured a disk that fragmented into my spinal column," I mutter "fucking piece of shit," under my breath. When I watch the end of WrestleMania XX, or the 2006 Hall of Fame ceremony I feel bad that Eddie Guerrero's legacy is linked with Benoit and is tarnished and censored because of him. It pales in comparison to the actual crimes he committed, but by doing what he did Benoit betrayed me and anyone who was ever a fan of his and wrestling fans in general. And he betrayed every wrestler that put him over, built him up, and helped him along the way. His evil actions that one day completely outweigh the years of good he did entertaining us.

That said, as a WrestleMania performer he may very well deserve a place on this list, but you have him ranked far too high. Wrestlers in the top ten should be names that are almost synonymous with WrestleMania: (in no particular order) Hulk Hogan, Roddy Piper, Andre the Giant, Randy Savage, Bret Hart, Undertaker, Shawn Michales, Steve Austin, The Rock, and Triple H (at this point maybe even Cena).

Couldn't you have found a better picture of Taker? You just had to choose one from his 2004 Walker, Texas Ranger days.

Austin should be ranked in the top 5, ya he only had seven matches, but with 5 wins, and two ICONIC losses, he should've done better than 7th

Your list lost all credibility when you overrated HHH. Btw, Austin passed out at 13, not 14.

sorry the undertaker may be undefeated at wrestlemania but most them were awful and forgetable. the only undertaker that are memorable are vs. Kane wm xiv, hhh wm x-7 and batista wm 23. the ranking should be #1 hbk, #2 hogan and #3 undertaker

" i just don't find it impressive that while shawn michaels was carrying kevin nash to a decent match, 'taker went over bundy, ohhhh... i could give quite a few of these examples but i won't."

The very next year Taker had a pretty good match with Nash himself so I don't see your point. Has HBK had better matches at WM overall? Yes but for the most part he's also had better opponents. When Taker has had capable opponents he delivered. You also must take into account that HBK was paid to have good matches. The Undertaker's character in the early years was a zombie. He wasn't supposed to go out & deliver a show stopping match. He was used as an attraction not a wrestler. There's a difference. It wasn't that he couldn't wrestle. (as he has proven) It's that he, at that time, was given a pay check to beat giants & stomp opponents not have 5 star matches. Also, you say it was luck. I know there's a lot of people who think they only recognized the streak come WM X-seven but that isn't true. At WM 11. You know, his match with Bundy that you mentioned, as he entered Vinnie Mac mentioned that he never lost at WM. Seen here from 2:28-2:30

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_GAnQi8KvY

So they had noticed it for a while. Look, I love HBK. He's GREAT! It's ok to be a lil biased but lets not blind our eyes from facts with love for the guy.

I was very surprised to see Austin at Rank 7 with is three classics (Hart-HBK-Rock) but when you look at rank 1-6 you cannot complain only argue but they're all great for sure.

but I agree (in part)with BH: Hulk Hogan is Wrestlemania!!! Not the best wrestler for sure but he should be #1! Hbk #2 and I'm not even sure if i'd put Taker in the top 3...16-0 ok but which match will be remembered?

Why have you done an opinion list but presented it as though there was a criteria, like JBL being on there for seven appearances, and Tito for 8. Yet Andre you claim could be justified by his sole appearance at WM3, totally contradicting your reasons for JBL and Santana.

Really you should have made a decision on wether you were sticking to your opinions or a set criteria, cus this list is just a joke as it stands.

I have to say I agree, simply because NO ONE deserves to end Undertaker's Wrestlemania Streak!

The Streak is synonymous with The Undertaker and Wrestlemania. Taker is one of the all time greats, but his legacy is being undefeated at WM.

The man will probably retire in the next few years, and there is absolutley NO REASON for his legacy to be tarnished by a loss. Personally. I hope he retires at 20-0. With that said, IMO the man below has a legitimate claim to the number one spot as well, but 16-0 trumps 8-3-1.

I also think that Hogan should be ranked number 2 and HBK 3. Hogan put WM on the map and without him, we probably wouldn't have a Wrestlemania today.

He was also a part of the most famous/greatest match in WM history with Andre The Giant. Other main events come and go, but that match is still the pinnacle of Wrestlemania, even the most casual of fans know that match and the name Hulk Hogan(as well as Andre The Giant).

Decent list, bias aside.

I'd give Shelton Benjamin an honorable mention though, for stealing the show every single MitB match, and to Ric Flair, for an awesome match with Savage at VIII, a very fun handicap tag match with Evolution against the Rock n Sock Connection, and his classic retirement match against HBK.

no way in hell hulk hogan is number three. shawn is overrated and the undertakers streak is mostly made of midcarders. did anyone really think that bundy, atrain and big show, kane (2) anf snuka would win...

Everyone can debate #25-2 all they want, but #1 is undeniably The Undertaker.

And for the record he should NEVER lose the streak. If all streaks are broken then it destroys the mystique of a streak. No one will care. But if you actually have one that stays solid it will be a BIG deal for all future streaks.

This list sucks. There is no set criteria. Is the list based on importance. Could not be then Savage, Rock, Hogan, and the Warrior would have been higher. Is it based on match quality. No then Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat would be on the list and Angle would be MUCH higher. Is it based on longevity. No then Hogan and HHH would be higher than Michaels. Your list is just to hard to understand.

i can definitely respect how you feel. and you've made some good points. maybe it's because i was never that big of a fan of benoit, it makes it easier to get past for me.

The very next year Taker had a pretty good match with Nash himself so I don't see your point. Has HBK had better matches at WM overall? Yes but for the most part he's also had better opponents. you know, you make some really valid points. but kevin nash and king kong bundy bullshit aside, at the end of the day, i love the undertaker. but it's some of the reasons that you mentioned that just makes it hard for me to buy the streak, such as how he was booked in his first seven years in the wwf. and just because mcmahon mentions it back in '95, doesn't mean that vince was already seeing a huge marketing tool in "the streak".
you've also proved me right is saying that in the first several years, "the streak" was simply a result the "deadman" persona and how the wwf booked him. and i'm not saying by any means, that the undertaker can't have great match. no, that's not what i'm saying. i'm just saying michaels is better, especially at wrestlemania.
and you said so yourself in the aforementioned paragraph.
i'm not saying benoit should be heralded for his in-ring work. and i'm not saying that we should burn the undertaker on a cross.
i just like a few benoit matches, and think that "the streak" isn't big deal, certainly, not a bigger deal than the man who carries it. i guess that's one of the things i've trying to say, but haven't known how.
undertaker > the streak
to prove my point, would anyone care if kozlov was the one carrying the streak, or how about chavo??
if the streak ended sunday, i'm not going to cease to be a 'taker fan, even if he was facing someone other than hbk.

Posted By: csonkamaniac (Guest)  on April 02, 2009 at 12:29 PM

the fact that the undertaker carries the streak, is exactly why i just don't buy it; the undertaker is a big enough attraction for too many reasons to list, and doesn't need the gimmick (and it's just that) of "the streak".
the bottom line is i want to see hbk vs. 'taker. that's a big enough spectacle on it's own, without wwe shoving some bullshit gimmick down my throat.
and just to prove another point:
does anyone in here not just think, but KNOW that the undertaker is picking up a win sunday??
yeah, i thought so.
why does everyone feel that way??
because of the streak.
can we all agree that this match could be alot more exciting(and we're talking about two of the greatest here) if we didn't KNOW who was going to win??

btw, it's yokozuna.

Posted By: csonkamaniac (Guest)  on April 02, 2009 at 12:35 PM

I agree that Taker should be near the top but then so could everyone if they were booked to be unbeaten at WrestleMania.

I know Taker DESERVES to be unbeaten because of his gimmick and some great performances, but HBK brings his A game at EVERY WrestleMania.

That's just my opinion, and I believe Austin should be above HHH, but it's your list and you knew you'd take a lot of shit for it, so fair play.

Posted By: Bubba (Guest)  on April 02, 2009 at 12:55 PM

"HBK brings his A game at EVERY WrestleMania."

and you think that Taker doesn't? I've said it before, but not even HBK could get a good match out of Giant Gonzalez.

It's true Taker was granted the undefeated streak but he paid for it by being given some really crap opponents. In many ways HBK was granted a luxury in being able to loose in spectacular style while Taker had to win in squash style partially due to the streak and partially due to the gimmick.

to csonkamaniac

Good points but I think it boils down to the casual fan. As much as you're right & as much as Taker could sell out an event with his presence alone the streak matters to the casual fan. I don't think he needs it either but it doesn't bother me because much of pro wrestling is predictable to me anyway. I'd be lying if I said I watched because of unpredictability. Frankly, I just want a good match & that's definitely what these 2 men will give us. As you said, I don't think it started out as a marketing tool but I think once they realized the potential they wanted to milk the cow for all it was worth. It's not a big deal to you or many other well-informed fans but it means a whole lot to WWE's base audience. The section that they cater to. The section that puts kids through college. So basically, I agree but I guess my point was that Taker is sorely underrated because of his days as an attraction & it's sad to see it because if those days never happened a lot of "smart" fans would consider him top 10 material as I feel he is but that’s just the way things are I guess.

I'm sorry but Taker at #1 is ridiculous. His match at 17 was a classic, 13 and 23 were pretty decent. That doesn't put him above Savage, Bret, HBK or Hogan.

No Ricky Steamboat? WM3 was his only memorable match, but it alone deserves an honorable mention at worst.

On the same theme Andre is easily higher than JBL. The biggest match in wrestling history never happens without him. JBL is a footnote at best, and volume doesn't change that.

Christian is #17 almost entirely for the ladder matches, but neither Hardy is here?

The top of my list goes:

1. Randy Savage
2. Hulk Hogan (that hurts to admit)
3. HBK
4. Kurt Angle
5. Bret Hart (another guy I hate)

I base mine on the number of top performances, and secondarily on the importance of the man to the event itself, which gets Hogan a huge boost. I must be very objective putting Bret over Austin, since every fiber of my fandom says the opposite.

My personal shock is Mr. Perfect, my all time favorite, who was really a dud on the biggest stage (Blue Blazer, Brutus, Big Bossman, Luger). Not one classic to be found.

to honesty...

very well put. i wasn't trying to undermine 'takers ability as in regards to everybody on this list as a whole, just in regards to shawn michaels. and i also agree with you about him being sorely underrated because of those days. i was putting it like this: if we're talking in kayfabe terms, okay, yeah, 'taker's beaten everyone. he must be the best if we're talking kayfabe logic. i'm just simply talking in terms of performance.
and i'll stop there b/c we could go back and forth all damn day. but well said.

I love Benoit defenders.

"Yea, he brutally murdered his wife and young son, but I'm not holding it against him when it comes to unimportant lists!!! Yah murder!!!"

i don't think i, or anyone else on here said "yah murder".
and i'm certainly not defending his actions, just his rightful place in the spectrum of wrestling.
and if this list is so unimportant, why in the fucking bloody blue hell are you not only taking the time to read the article itself, but also taking the time to read all of the comments, and then post one yourself??
seems like you don't really have alot of room to criticize other people's actions.

Posted By: csonkamaniac (Guest)  on April 02, 2009 at 04:37 PM

and i'll also say that is easy for me to watch benoit matches for one single reason; nothing's shocking. not anymore. not after owen. not after eddie. tragedy(that includes double homicide/suicides) is synanomous with professional wrestling and i, like alot of fans are simply caloused, and used it. period. deal with it.

I don't understand how John Cena, Ultimate Warrior, or Yokozuna could possibly be behind the British Bulldog on this list. Cena & Warrior's records are similar, and their matches are far more memorable. They may not be considered as sound in the ring as Davey Boy, but their Wrestlemania resumes far outshine the Bulldog's. Also, Yokozuna main evented Wrestlemania in back to back years, while the Bulldog was never close to being at the top of the card. Just doesn't seem to make any sense to me given your criteria.

Hogan is the reason Mania is what it is today. Hogan carried the first 9 Manias, then stole the show when he wrestled The Rock. Why do you internet writers hate Hogan so much?

The Undertaker while being Undefeated didn't come into his own until his 3rd or 4th mania.

Michaels put on some great matches but how many manias were sold because of him.

Give Hogan the credit he is due.

Not to mention the all time record holding 93,000+ Silverdome-
Most of the Taker's matches were filler-not main events.
Stupid list.
Hogan #1 Nuff said.
