411’s Wrestler of the Week 05.04.09: Week 5
Posted by Jeremy Thomas on 05.04.2009

Welcome to Week 5, Year FIVE, of 411's Wrestler of the Week. A quick overview of the rules to kick things off for us as a reminder…

Each writer chooses FIVE wrestlers from any promotion and each wrestler gets a point total attached to that ranking. It looks a little like this…

1st - 5
2nd - 4
3rd - 3
4th - 2
5th - 1

Then we tally up the votes and the official 411 Wrestler of the Week is crowned. But wait, there's more! Each week the top SIX vote getters get a points value for their ranking which looks something like this…

1st - 15
2nd - 12
3rd - 9
4th - 6
5th - 3
6th - 1

...and they go towards the 411 Wrestler of the Year award to be announced each year at WrestleMania. This will be posted every Monday. Let's see who wins this week…

The Voting~!
Aaron Hubbard
1) Bison Smith
For those of you who don't live in ignorance, the following sentence should be enough to justify his place at the top. Bison Smith pinned Mitsuharu Misawa at NOAH"s Global Tag League this week. Considering this is rarer than a victory over Undertaker these days, the big man gets top votes from me this week.

2) MVP: Out of the blue, MVP established himself as one of Raw's top faces by standing up to Randy Orton. Add in a victory over Dolph Ziggler and some extra publicity for the ‘E, and it's been a good week for Mr. Porter.
3) Jeff Hardy: Defeated Chris Jericho, Kane and Rey Mysterio to become the #1 Contender to Edge's World Championship, and then sent a further message with a Swanton Bomb to the Ultimate Opportunist.
4) CM Punk/Tommy Dreamer
5) Batista

ARI
1) MVP
At the center of one of the most positive pieces of PR for WWE in years is MVP, who has received a great deal of attention from Sherry Shepherd and The View. The extra attention led to MVP being given the chance to elevate himself in the WWE pecking order. He challenged Randy Orton & Legacy in the opening of Raw and gave a great effort in a singles match against Orton later in the night (even though he was booked to do a disappearing act in order to get McMahon Jr. Jr. over). Then he and Shepherd were part of a very fun series of moments on Smackdown, where MVP retained his U.S. title against Dolph Ziggler. I actually wouldn't mind if Shepherd came back on a more regular basis to be MVP's valet--there is something there between the two of them.

2) Bison Smith: A win against Mitsuharu Misawa is a damned great achievement in the world of Japanese professional wrestling. Foreign wrestlers just don't win all that often against the biggest names in Japan, and its a great personal accomplishment for Smith, after years of being in NOAH, to get that win.
3) CM Punk: Punk and Hardy are basically the top two faces of Smackdown right now, and each asserted himself this week on the first SD with the new post-Draft roster. Punk felt right at home in the give-and-take between he, Edge and Jericho in the opening segment. Then he pinned World Heavyweight Champion Edge in a non-title match, and but for the interference of Umaga could have cashed in the Money in the Bank shot to win the title outright. A strong showing for Punk this week.
4) Jeff Hardy
5) Portia Perez & Nicole Matthews

Larry Csonka
1) MsChif
MsChif retained her SHIMMER title this past weekend, THREE TIMES. Successful defenses over Serena Deeb, Wensa Busic and LuFisto give the SHIMMER champion the first place vote from me.

2) Portia Perez and Nicole Matthews: The team won the SHIMMER tag team titles over the weekend, but Matthews also went to a 20-minute draw with Haze while Perez defeated Allison Danger in a no-DQ street fight. This was a great weekend for the Canadian FREAKIN Ninjas.
3) Bison Smith: Bison Smith becomes the third man in three years to claim a pin fall victory over Misawa.
4) MVP
5) Jeff Hardy/Batista

Ryan Byers
1) Portia Perez & Nicole Matthews - This was a huge weekend for SHIMMER, and I don't think that any two wrestlers on the roster had a bigger weekend than Portia Perez and Nicole Matthews, collectively known as the Canadian NINJAS. The duo started off in singles competition, with Portia defeating rival Allison Danger in a No DQ street fight and Nicole wrestling to an impressive twenty minute draw against Daizee Haze. Matthews then had a rematch against Haze and lost, but she actually wound up looking more impressive in the ring than Daizee did. Finally the duo capped of the weekend by returning to tag team competition and unseating Ashley Lane and Neveah to become your NEW SHIMMER Tag Team Champions. Not only is it nice to have gold around the waists of the Ninjas, but it is also worth noting that they are the first heel champions of any sort in the company's history.

2) MsChif - After taping four separate volumes of SHIMMER's DVD series this weekend, MsChif is still on top of the promotion as its champion. She defended that strap successfully against three very game competitors in the forms of Serena Deeb, Wesna Busic, and LuFisto. Top that off with a solid tag match with Cheerleader Melissa against Amazing Kong and Sara Del Rey, and she's an easy choice for number two.
3) Bison Smith - I'll give him number three since pinning Misawa is an uncommon accomplishment, but I have to question how far it will get Bison in the long run given that Samoa Joe was still a flop in NOAH after doing the exact same thing.
4) LuFisto
5) MVP

Matt Short
1) MVP
No one looked like a biggest star this week in the WWE than MVP. On Raw he got in the face of the new WWE Champion Randy Orton and then managed to hang with the champ in a great match. Then on Smackdown he successfully defended his US Championship against Dolph Ziggler, with a main stream TV personality in his corner, earning him so great publicity. MVP had an awesome week.

2) Bison Smith: Picked up an extremely rare pinfall victory over Misawa in NOAH this past week. Smith was already considered the company's top foreigner for a few years, but this solidifies his position. A title match is most likely in the works for Smith against GHC Heavyweight Champion Jun Akiyama, but whether that match up is more successful than his last challenge remains to be seen.
3) MsChif: Three successful title defenses over the span of a weekend is very impressive for the SHIMMER Champion.
4) CM Punk
5) Amazing Red

Samuel Berman
1) Bison Smith
Scored an exceedingly rare (especially for a gaijin) pinfall victory over NOAH boss Mitsuharu Misawa.

2) Hiroshi Tanahashi: Retained his IWGP Heavyweight Title against rival Hirooki Goto in a rematch of their 2007 Match of the Year Candidate.
3) MsChif: Three title retentions for the SHIMMER Champion.
4) MVP
5) Davey Richards

Michael Bauer
1) Bison Smith
Bison Smith pinned Mitsuharu Misawa at NOAH's Global Tag League this week. If you have any doubts about how big this is, let me run it down for you. Misawa has now been pinned only 3 times in the past 3 years. Even Hulk Hogan didn't have a more dominating three years during any part of the 1980's. Bison Smith joins Samoa Joe and Morishima as the only people to beat Misawa in the past three years. Yes, this may not have had the "United States exposure" of MVP, but this is certainly a bigger deal and bigger magntiude of importance than ANYTHING, even if this was WrestleMania week.

2) MVP: He would be an easy #1 in any other week with what he did. Got the mega fresh new draft pick push on Raw, then beat Dolph on Smackdown.
3) MsChif: Name any other Women's Champion who would have three sucessful defenses in one weekend.
4) Hiroshi Tanahashi
5) Portia Perez & Nicole Matthews

Joseph Martinez
1) MVP: When all the big stars were drafted to Raw it seemed like a wrestler such as MVP would be lost in the shuffle. MVP proved that wrong and had an excellent showing against new WWE Champion Randy Orton. Things are looking bright for Porter.

2) Jeff Hardy: Hardy won a four way elimination match to set up a World Title match at the next PPV against Edge. He looked good doing it and can cement himself as the top face of the brand with the Undertaker possibly sidelined.
3) CM Punk: Although his dreams of cashing in the Money in the Bank were squashed by Umaga, CM Punk still got the victory over the World Heavyweight Champion. He looks to feud with Umaga and still has his briefcase.
4) Umaga
5) Amazing Red

Daniel Wilcox
1) John Morrison
I wanted to vote for one of the guys who got a push on WWE this week, and I was going to go with MVP but I figure because he's on Raw, his elevation is going to be as long-lasting as others. John Morrison, on the other hand, looks to be set for superstardom. His face turn is being well recieved, and a program with Chris Jericho will only serve to help further his popularity with the fans. Morrison also picked up an impressive win over Shelton Benjamin this week, and looks to be one of the stand-out performers for the SmackDown brand going into the post-draft future.

2) Jeff Hardy: Hardy came out on top in an impressive fatal four way and will now take on Edge for the World Championship at Judgment Day. Contract dispute or not, someone in management is high on Jeff Hardy.
3) MVP: MVP stepped up to the plate on Raw, confronting Randy Orton and then hanging with him in a really good match on Raw.
4) CM Punk
5) Batista

Jeremy Thomas
1) MsChif
Am I a SHIMMER mark? Admittedly, yes. Even if I wasn't however, it would be REALLY hard to deny that MsChif deserves #1 this week. Defending one's title three times over one weekend and still having time to take on Awesome Kong and Sara Del Ray as part of a tag team match is damn impressive no matter who you are.

2) M.V.P.: Montel came out of Raw looking like a million bucks, hanging right in there with the WWE Heavyweight Champion throughout an excellent match. From the looks of things, McMahonagement is ready to give M.V.P. that sustained push, and if it keeps up then he could well be a main eventer in no time.
3) Jeff Hardy & CM Punk: More elevation occurred on SmackDown, where Jeff earned his shot in a fatal four-way at Edge while Punk defeated the the World Heavyweight Champion and was only stopped from becoming said champ via a Money in the Bank shot by Umaga.
4) Nicole Matthews & Portia Perez
5) Batista

MVP deserved this, he's gonna be a big player this year and I wouldn't be surprised to see his picture just below Chris Jerichos soon.

Amazing Red deserved a lot more love. He looked as good as ever in his return. He pulled out so sweet moves and got the crowd to pop for him like crazy(the same crowd that didn't give him much of a reaction when he first came out) The MCMG got no love at all after a great week. They were involved in a terrific tag match , had a fun backstage talk with Foley and cut a great promo on Daniels. Those two kids are everything the WWE wishes Dibiase and Rhodes would be. Oh yeah a little too much love for Batista. The guy breaks wind and gets a title shot. He was involved in one of the worst Main Event matches you'll ever see. He got much more votes than he deserved.

What about the British Invasion? A debut on national tv with a victory in the tag tournament over LAX.

Oh yeah, 411 hates TNA. I forgot.

Let's give more votes to an indy wrestler beating a puro guy for a title. Wait. IT WASN'T EVEN FOR A BELT???

Just appearing on TNA or WWE television shows is more important and big than anything that Japanese or indy wrestlers do. EVER. Voting for them over WWE and TNA guys shows ignorance, Aaron. Epic fail.

The fact that Jerry Lynn is no.1 in the standings says it all for how shitty most of these 2-bit hack writers' picks are. Jerry Lynn is a has-been, a never-was, an over-the-hill loser who (despite having average in-ring talent) has a horrible look, no charisma, no prescence, no appeal and no connection with the fans. The guy is still living off the brief fame he leeched off Rob Van Dam 10 years ago.

The only reason ROH have pushed this washed-up reject from the major leagues is due to a misguided, cynical attempt to replicate the storyline of "The Wrestler". Unfortunately, this isn't Hollywood and Jerry Lynn isn't Mickey Rourke.

Jerry Lynn's biggest claim to fame is (as someone pointed out last week) winning the WWF Light Heavyweight Title from Crash Holly on Sunday Night Heat in April 2001. The only reason Heyman ever put the ECW World Title on this chump was because it was in the dying days of ECW when even Peter "Justin Credible" Polaco got a run with the belt. Giving Jerry Lynn any kind of recognition in 2009 is a travesty.

ROH is garbage and full of worthless losers and no-talent wannabees (despite all the claims by the wannabee super-geeks who write their trash for this website). Their fans are deluded idiots who think their shitty promotion is worth a crap. They are wrong.

Great lists again. This time, the rest of you better start ducking and covering right next to Berman. The indy and puro haters (i.e. WWE blind loyalists) are about to blow this place up. Good for NOAH giving Bison the win over Misawa, he's been a loyal gaijin worker over there for years now. I first saw him on a Pro Wrestling Iron dvd like 5 or 6 years ago and was thrilled to see him in ROH recently. Keep up the good work guys.

Samuel Berman is the particularly irritating kind of arrogant smark chump who uses terms like "gaijin" and thinks that makes him smart and above the lesser casual fans. That elitist tool is a biased, self-important douchetard who desperately craves the attention and recognition on the internet that he can't get in the real world. Ever. He is a consumate loser and his entire life can be summed up in two words: Epic Fail.

Batista is garbage... the most stale, over-exposed performer on the entire roster... how many of his mandatory failed title shots will we have to sit through this year?

It's quite funny how Edge and Batista are similar in the sense that they are the go-to guys when the WWE needs a PPV main event set up quickly, only Edge wins all of his title matches and Batista loses all of his. That is the difference, Batista makes for a horrible champion and everybody knows it.

Let's give more votes to an indy wrestler beating a puro guy for a title. Wait. IT WASN'T EVEN FOR A BELT???

Not A Puro guy, THE Puro guy. Since you obviously don't read, the guys been pinned 3 times in the last 3 years. NOBODY beats Misawa. Bison Smith did.

What you continuously fail to realise is that NOBODY cares other than socially isolated tards like you who spend all their time in the internet wrestling community and become unbearably pompous, self-important, elitist little bitches.

Thank you to the writers who recognized the significance of pinning Mitsuharu Misawa. This is what makes you guys world-class.

I know you folks know better and will ignore these one-dimensional simple-minded trollmark comments, but just to reiterate -- forget about 'em!

I appreciate the work, keep doing what you do!

    "Aaron Hubbard

that was a very stupid comment, i do not watch or like japanese wrestling but i do not think that makes me ignorant

Posted By: armin (Guest) on May 04, 2009 at 04:00 PM

Ignorance is the state of not knowing. Therefore, if you know nothing about japanese wrestling you are ignorant. If you DO know about that to which Hubbard was refering, then you are not ignorant. I myself do NOT know about Japanese wrestling, therefor I am ignorant about it. Calling someone ignorant is not automatically an insult. Calling someone a stupid insufferable douchebag, however IS an insult. Are we clear now? Good. Now let the grownups talk. Mmmmbye!

Why don't you just make all the winners every week someone in WWE so all Vince's marks will be happy. Then make another secret site devoted to actual WRESTLING that only fans of Puro, lucha and Indy wrestling can enter by answering a series of questions that only smarks can answer. That way everyone will be happy and I won't have to keep reading idiotic shit from stupid Cena fans and their ilk.

They had Bison beat Misawa this week? Wow. It's odd to think with that occurring, that MVP still won. For all of those our there that are convinced that nothing outside of the WWE and maybe, MAYBE TNA should count, remember that wrestling is big in Mexico, Japan, and other places as well. Just because you don't keep track of what is going on there, doesn't mean that it isn't a big deal for millions of people across the world.

not sure what a misawa is or a bison smith. hey maybe we are missing something where can I see a weekly show??????

oh you watch it on you tube. either that or you guys (fucking csonka included this week) are sitting around a tv while berman stands on a roof with a hundred foot pole stuck out of his ass. this get you channel 69 from hiroshima and you eat mcnuggets with chopsticks and you all beat off to a jumping bomb angels vs mr fugi and bull nakano match.

way to put up a united front.....bison smith.... why not clar kent over jimmy olson pathetic. csonka you suck this week you fucking kiss ass

    I'm confused by three things:

    1) How these people don't realize that wrestling is bigger in Japan than here, where pro wrestling is one step above cock fighting in the public's mind.

    2) Why these people don't just read WWE only websites.

    3) How anyone on any pro wrestling website can try to insult someone for "living in ignorance of pussy."

    I'm so confused.

Bison Smith, MsChif, anybody from SHIMMER, RoH, CZW, and the like winning "wrestler of the week" would be like naming a high school player or Japanese player the MLB Player of the Week. It's wrong.

MVP finally gets his due with the WOW. Porter will win the WWE Championship very soon. I am excited about the Smackdown 12 because these "12" stars will be trying to win and compete for either title. It is great to be a wrestling fan right now.

I personally don't mind that Japan/indies/etc. get a little recognition, but man, sometimes it is ridiculous. MVP was on the freakin' View for crying out loud. That's big crossover right there. There are now a whole lot of housewives who know who MVP is. There are tons of WRESTLING fans who couldn't even begin to tell you who MsChif is. It's fun to get some names recognized there and perhaps get readers of the sight to look into other wrestlers. But MVP this week > anything SHIMMER has done ever.

Sade, I've been going by this handle since 1997. Did you have an original thought to offer, or were you intending to fit the "one-dimensional simple-minded" description I described?

I'm willing to bet that 99% of the ANIME!WOW fans don't even get a chance to watch the matches that they put over as being amazing. You can say wrestling is more important in Japan than it is here. I'll buy that. But the bottom line - like it or not - is that other countries all over the world are dying to see WWE wrestlers come to them. People in the states don't salivate over Tsunami Oragano or whomever the champion is of some Japanese fed that feels the need to CAPITALIZE LONG WORDS AS THE NAME OF THEIR GROUP. The WWE is the gold standard in wrestling so when a WWE guy has a pretty good week everyone else around the world needs to have a god awful amazing week to be remotely in their class. MVP was the man last week and if you think anyone else deserves that title simply for pinning "Jap Cena" then you, kind sir, are deluded. Congrats on the win this MVP. You clearly earned it.

I feel much smarter for having read the WotW choices, however the vast majority of the comment section offset it and then some. Apparently having the free cash flow to purchase VHS cassettes of SHIMMER or NOAH or any other 2 bit, 5th rate wrestling organization, taped with a 24 year old video camer by a guy sitting in the 6th row of a high school gymnasium in Pawtuckett constitutes "intelligence" on this website. Since that's the case, I'm happy to wallow in my "ignorance."

OK, I'm going to ask again. Where do you guys who vote for the indy or foreign wrestlers get the chance to see them? And yes, I mean this in a legitimate (i.e. non-sarcastic) way. Rather than join the masses who consistently shit on the non-mainstream picks (a group I have admittedly been a part of in the past), I would simply like to know how I too can see these guys. Obviously by visiting this website I am a big wrestling fan, so maybe there is some cool shit out there I am missing. Are there special cable/satelite TV packages that carry this stuff, or is it all really "word of mouth" and speculation?

    Michael Bauer
    1) Bison Smith
Bison Smith pinned Mitsuharu Misawa at NOAH's Global Tag League this week. If you have any doubts about how big this is, let me run it down for you. Misawa has now been pinned only 3 times in the past 3 years. Even Hulk Hogan didn't have a more dominating three years during any part of the 1980's.

Did Hogan get pinned by anyone from 1984-86?

Posted By: Huh? (Guest) on May 04, 2009 at 04:38 PM

Seriously, I don't believe Hogan was pinned from the time he beat Shiek until the Andre match on The Main Event. That is over a four year run. I believe that is better than getting pinned three times in three years.

Great week for MVP. He's definately a potential main eventer for a long time. Great wrestler, good look, good promo skills. MVP is a walking upside.

Bison Smith beats Misawa... big acheivement, but if he beats Akiyama and becomes the first non Japanese wrestler to win the GHC belt that would be a bigger feather in his cap. Not the a cap fits over his crazy hair.

Good old MsChif. One of the best female wrestlers around. I fully expect her to turn up in TNA, get an awful gimmick and dissapear again.

Jeff Hardy. Dunno where he's going at the moment. If he keeps his head on straight maybe they'll give him the belt again.

CM Punk. Let's hope that the Umaga fued gives him some momentum to a better title run the second time around. This could be an example of the big star push, de-push to see how they handle it and push again when they've proved they can deal with losses thing that Vince likes to test his best prospects with occasionally.

Remember kids, comment on wrestling responsibly!

Winning a 2-minute match on SmackDown will ALWAYS be a greater and more significant achievement that winning some worthless belt in some shitty match in front of 20 people that even the douchebag voting for it in WOTW hasn't seen!!!
