411’s Buy or Sell 5.22.09: The Young Bucks and PWG Tag Titles, Double Hair vs. Double Mask Matches, The Hybrid Dolpins, and More!!
Posted by Michael Bauer on 05.22.2009
This week, the 411 staff looks at the upcoming events of CHIKARA and PWG's DDT4 2009 Tournament as Jason Smeall battles Alex Mattis in Buy or Sell!
Welcome everyone to WEEK One Hundred Nine of BUY or SELL. For those of you who haven't been with us since the beginning, here's the Reader's Digest version of what this column is all about. BUY or SELL is very much like 411's long-running Fact or Fiction column. The main difference is that BUY or SELL focuses on topics like the U.S. Independent scene, Lucha Libre, Japanese Wrestling and pretty much anything else that isn't mainstream wrestling, WWE and or TNA. This allows for these areas to get a bit more press and for you, our loyal readers, to learn even more about the sport of professional wrestling.
Week Number 109's Match-Up:
Finally realizing that TNA sucks more ass than anything- Jason Smeall!
vs.
Spent plenty of time Sprawling around the Best of the Rest- Alex Mattis !
The Colony will not be unmasked this weekend in the Double Mask vs. Double Hair Match.
Jason Smeall : BUY. So the Lucha de Apuesta match returns to Chikara this weekend and to be honest I really can't see The Colony getting unmasked. F.I.S.T. have retained the upper hand in this feud for the entire year so far and it's about time that The Colony gained some revenge. Also The Colony have a great gimmick and unmasking them would destroy that gimmick and leave us with two guys that probably wouldn't stand out without their masks. F.I.S.T. have already claimed Worker Ant's career and won the 2009 King of Trios tournament, they don't need The Colony's masks to maintain their status as top rudos in Chikara.
Alex Mattis : SELL. Ain't no way Sexy Chucky T be losin' that hair!!! To be honest I'm really torn on which way to go here, it could go either way and either way would work. I've always had this group of guys that come to mind when I hear CHIKARA; Quack, Hallowicked, Jigsaw, Akuma, and the Colony and if Jigsaw and Akuma are any indication of what is to come The Colony may end up unmasking this weekend and take a step towards a new chapter of their career.
0 for 1.
With Dragon Gate's YAMATO, NOAH's Atsushi Aoki, NOAH's Tsuyoshi Kikuchi, and DDT's Kota Ibushi coming in as outsiders, this year's Best of the Super Juniors tournament will be the most entertaining in recent years.
Jason Smeall : BUY. I'll be completely honest here and admit that I've only seen a little NJPW and that doesn't include any of the BOSJ tournaments. However, I have seen the four men mentioned in action and from that alone I predict that this will be an exciting tournament. In particular, Kota Ibushi should shine as he has been on a red hot streak for over a year now, he has had great matches all over the world in the last twelve months and I have no doubt that he'll bring his A game to the BOSJ as well.
Alex Mattis : BUY. While the Best of the Super Juniors tourney rarely disappoints this one could really be something to write home about. The additions from some of Japan's top promotions only add to the intrigue and spectacle of the event. I've have done nothing but absolutely love the work I have seen from Ibushi and will be pulling for him to take the whole thing home.
1 for 2.
Yujiro and Naito, who are set to leave TNA and start up with CMLL, will learn much more in Mexico than they did in the United States.
Jason Smeall : BUY. Yeah, why not. Yujiro and Naito were solid additions to the TNA roster but they weren't used to their maximum potential in my opinion and they were already better than most of TNA's tag team division before they began working with the company. CMLL will allow them to face a better standard of worker and they will most likely receive a greater push in CMLL than they did in TNA.
Alex Mattis : BUY. This really depends on what you are looking to learn in wrestling. I believe that in the long run they will look back at their time in the States as being very beneficial and an exciting time but Mexico, and especially CMLL, can really boost these guys and be a true blast for them. They'll perform in front of large, red-hot crowds and get to learn from some of the masters of a completely different style, not to mention all the tradition and history they could soak it while there… Yes, this should be a good move for them.
2 for 3.
SWITCH~!
The way this year's DDT4 tournament is set up, it is obvious the Young Bucks will lose the PWG Tag Team Titles in the Finals.
Alex Mattis : SELL. It does seem obvious… which is why it won't happen!!! WRESTLING SWERVE MUHAHAHA!! No. But it is an oddly balanced out tourney, a lot of locals on one side then an indy all-star cast on the other, should be interesting to see how it plays out. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised to see them lose the straps in their opening round match setting up a "What the hell is going to happen" finals.
Jason Smeall : SELL. I think it's obvious that they'll reach the finals as there's no way The Cutler Brothers or Los Luchas/Kenny Omega & Chuck Taylor are going over them, but I don't necessarily see them losing the belts. Their likely opponents in the finals are either the Hybrid Dolphins or the Motor City Machine Guns. If it's the Machine Guns, my money would be on a Bucks retain as there's no guarantee that the Machine Guns could be regulars for PWG. If it's the Hybrid Dolphins, I could potentially see them taking the belts, especially because of the immense popularity that they have achieved, however The Young Bucks are getting bookings for the top indy companies now and if I was the PWG promoter I would keep the belts on them as they would be representing the promotion in their ROH and DGUSA exploits.
3 for 4.
Chris Hero will turn heel on Roderick Strong during their opening round match against the Motor City Machine Guns.
Alex Mattis : BUY. Sure it seems like a very logical thing to happen, but I expect Mr. Loaded Elbow to head into this with the "I want ALL the gold" mentality and for he and Roddy to work well together. However that will only get them so far as The Machine Guns will reign supreme in this one. Then after the man, Hero can commence his heel-ish beatdown of Rod.
Jason Smeall : BUY. I'm not completely sure on this one but I'm going to buy it. Although indy wrestlers can often be working as both face and heel at the same time because of the different promotions that they wrestle in, Chris Hero is in full-blown heel mode in ROH and I have a feeling that he wants to do something similar in PWG. He's been the promotion's flag-bearing world champion top babyface for almost a year now and with the return of bona fide fan favourites like Colt Cabana and Paul London I can see Hero turning heel and working title programs with Strong, Cabana, London and the seemingly endless list of babyface contenders in PWG.
4 for 5.
Bryan Danielson and Paul London have the worst Tag Team name in history, being known as the Hybrid Dolphins.
Alex Mattis : SELL. Ok, if this is the first time you are reading that their tag team is named the Hybrid Dolphins then yes it may sound incredibly dumb. But if you are like myself and have seen the promo in which they explain why they are the Hybrid Dolphins then you would think this tag team is the greatest thing since the Big Wiggle. If you haven't seen the promo to which I am referring make sure you do, as it is the promo of the century. "Bring cake, German chocolate." And as for worst names… come on "Hybrid Dolphins" isn't as bad as T&A, Head Cheese, Techno Team 2000, The Two-Man Power Trip, etc.
Jason Smeall : SELL. Exhibit A –
The defense rests.
5 for 6.
The One Hundred Ninth edition of BUY or SELL finishes at 5 for 6! Stay tuned for next week as two more people will go head to head with a whole new set of topics.
Please, oh please, do not let the Colony lose their masks. They are one of the best gimmicks in Chikara and have played it perfectly. Besides, we all see how well Jigsaw did with his, right? Without their masks, they are just two more skinny white guys on the indy scene.

On the question involving Yujiro and Naito, I think it all depends on how stable CMLL is, really. I just get this impression from everything that I've seen and read that the promotion is a sinking ship and AAA is out-performing them on a regular basis. I mean, if Mark freakin' Jindrak (who was actually a top star for CMLL)jumping over to AAA tells you anything then I wonder what the future of the company holds let alone Yujiro and Naito's place in it. Best of luck though - I'm sure there are worse places to work.

1. Dear God no...The Colony is awesome. Team F.I.S.T. needs a damn loss anyway. So much for the Pancake Stimulus.
2. Don't think it matters either way, talent is talent.
3. Thank God...it will be better than tag-jobbing to Nash.
4. Young Bucs are starting to gain nationwide momentum...would hardly see PWG having them drop the belts when they now have the chance to get the PWG name out there.
5. Isn't Hero a heel everywhere else? Only makes sense. I hate it when big indy stars try to have different alignments elsewhere...you're well known, be what you're good at (I'm looking at YOU Claudio!).
6. BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!

I've got to think NO LIMIT is better off in CMLL than in TNA. They were progressing very nicely when they lost the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag belts to Sabin & Shelley, but then they landed on Impact and just stagnated due mostly to having to work short, limited matches. They're definitely better off anywhere where they actually work with top talent and learn rather than just get squashed in 3 minute matches.
