411’s Dustin James discusses the top 10 WWE tag teams of the 80s, WWE’s failure in the ratings Monday Night, new TNA talent, Warrior not being considered for the WWE Hall of Fame and more! Check out the full column for all the details!
Welcome back inside the Squared Circle! How is everyone doing this week? I've been doing fantastic! Of course it's hard not to when you have had 10 straight days of sun! Trust me, in Oregon...that's huge news! Either way, the nice weather has inspired me to take a camping trip this weekend and thus I had to write this baby a little early and it was slightly rushed. I'll admit it's not jam packed with news but that was a combination of this sudden camping trip and the fact that there was NO news this week! Just look at my "Biggest news of the week" section for proof of that.
But hey, I can't make the news....I only try to write about it....
Soooooo......
LET'S GET IT ON!!!!!
Biggest News Of The Week:
Jon and Kate Plus 8 OWN The WWE!
The new kings of Monday night?
And coming out of left field to challenge the WWE as "king of Monday nights" is the tabloids new favorite couple....Jon and Kate Gosselin of TLC's Jon & Kate Plus 8! Who could have seen this coming? Apparently the majority of American's are interested in seeing a married couple with 8 kids who are supposedly having affairs on each other. Oh, for those of you who don't know, "Jon & Kate Plus 8's" season premiere last Monday scored a record 9.8 million viewers. That made it the most watched show that night...on both broadcast TV and cable. If you don't think that does any kind of damage to RAW's rating then you are wrong. Any kind of competition on TV is bad for the WWE's flagship show. When you have a show on cable TV scoring these kind of numbers (and potentially all season long) the WWE could see a dip in their ratings. As a matter of fact, they did.....
This week's RAW earned a 3.2 which was down from the 3.6 the show did the week before. That doesn't necessarily mean that Jon & Kate's success had anything to do with RAW's rating, but it's the lowest number that RAW has received in 2009. Perhaps it was a combination of the NBA Playoffs and the "gossip train" on TLC? The bottom line is, America's fascination with this married couple may not go away anytime soon. The WWE doesn't need to sweat too much right now, but it could potentially become a problem in the future.
See....I told you it was a slow news week!
Remember This Guy???
Max Moon
Sometime in the 1990's...Vince McMahon was on drugs. Nobody has ever proved it and he has never actually came out and said it, but if you take just ONE look at that costume that Max Moon is wearing and think that he could become a superstar...then you must be on the same drugs that ol Vinny Mac is using. I mean, LOOK AT THAT THING! Max Moon made his debut in the WWE in 1992. At first, he was played by none other than WCW & TNA veteran Konnan. However, Konnan must have a sixth sense for shitty gimmicks and soon bailed out on the WWE. The gimmick was then given to Paul Diamond because it was THE GREATEST GIMMICK EVER AND IT WOULD GET OVER!
Unfortunately, Max Moon failed to get over after a few months and the WWE just abandoned the idea and tried to shove it under the carpet. However Vince....you can't erase our memories!
Here's a clip of Max Moon facing Shawn Michaels on RAW:

Random News Bits:
- Don West's new role in TNA is apparently suppose to be patterned after Bobby "The Brain" Heenan. That's a shame seeing as Heenan ruled and West blows. Oh well, hopefully Taz will replace him in a few months (doubt it!).
- Bobby Lashley has yet to sign a deal with TNA because he wants to wait until after his fight with Bob Sapp to make any kind of decision regarding his future. Why you ask? Because if for some reason he can dominate Sapp on June 27, the UFC may just come calling. However, the UFC won't come calling if he's associated with TNA. Let's face it people....UFC > TNA!
- Due to the Ultimate Warrior's current lawsuit with the WWE, he's not being considered for the Hall of Fame next year in Phoenix (Warrior's hometown and location of WrestleMania 26). The WWE has let it be known that Warrior and Randy Savage are off limits regarding the HoF. That's a shame considering they were a major reason I started watching wrestling in the first place. Plus, if Pete Rose has a spot in the Hall and these two don't....how serious can we take it?
- While Bill Shaw and Eric Bischoff refused to be interviewed for the upcoming History of WCW DVD, the WWE did score interviews with Kevin Sullivan, David Crockett, Jim Crockett, Dr. Harvey Schiller, and Mr. Bill Goldberg. Dude...I'm so down for this DVD. It really should have been released 5+ years ago, but why complain now?
- Now we move on to DVD's that I don't want. According to good ol' JR, the WWE is currently working on a Batista DVD. The only interest I would have at all in this DVD would be to see what he would say about his time as "Deacon Batista". CAN I GET AN AMEN??
- The WWE has announced that the "Unforgiven" PPV has been officially changed to "Breaking Point" and that all the top matches will be submission matches. I hold "Unforgiven" close to my heart because it's the only PPV that I have attended in my hometown of Portland! Now, it's gone! What will I do??? I suppose I'll always have that memory of Stevie Richards in drag vs. Tyson Tomko to smooth me over! Poor "Unforgiven", you will be missed....
R.I.P.
- TNA has seen a ton of new talent debut/return lately. Raven, Shane Douglas, and Victoria all made their debuts/returns on Impact! this week. Plus, more ex-WWE guys are set to debut soon...but I won't spoil it for the two of you who hate spoilers. Either way, I'm a fan of everyone involved so you can count me down for this. I just hope Douglas can wrestle without having to resort to his old ways......

Wrestling Top 10 Lists:
Top 10 WWE Tag Teams of the 1980's
(There were a lot of great tag teams in the WWE during the 1980's. Would you like to know who I consider my top 10 WWE tag teams of the 1980's? OF COURSE YOU DO! Before you read it, I feel I should fill you in on my voting criteria. I'm giving A LOT of points to teams who captured the WWE Tag Team Title. Why? Because it's the top of the totem pole for every tag team. Also, I'm not factoring in ANYTHING any of these teams did outside of the WWE or the 1980's. And with that out of the way.....)
This list IS IN a particular order......
Honorable Mentions:
The Fabulous Rougeaus - While Raymond and Jacques Rougeau were never able to capture the WWE tag team titles, whenever I hear their music or see them in action...it just reminds me of late 1980's WWE. USA! USA!
The Powers of Pain - The Warlord and The Barbarian were two scary dudes. So the WWE decided to throw them together as a tag team that would rival Demolition. The thing I remember the most about PoP is the classic heel turn against Demolition that involved Mr. Fuji. GREAT MOMENT!!
The Rockers - The Rockers remain one of my all-time favorite tag teams, however they didn't accomplish much in the 1980's.
The Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff - The Shiek and Volkoff were able to capture the WWE tag team title unlike any of these other teams. However, they were only able to hold it for about 4 months before The U.S. Express took em away for old glory!
AND NOW.....THE TOP 10!!!
fans.com/wrestlemaniaV/images/strike_force.jpg">
10) Strike Force
Strike Force (unfortunately?) weren't a tag team for very long. It seemed that after YEARS of teaming with various partners (Tony Garea, Tom Zenk, & Tito Santana) that Rick Martel finally got tired of wrestling in tag teams and wanted to pursue his dream of modeling. I'm sorry....but that just reeks of arrogance! Anyway, my favorite Strike Force moment occurred at WrestleMania 5 when Martel pulled the old HEEL turn on Tito! CLASSIC!
9) The Brain Busters
The Brain Busters were freaking awesome. I truly wanted to put them #1 but because Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard didn't last long in the WWE, it just couldn't happen.
8) The Dream Team
While Brutus Beefcake and Greg Valentine are more known as singles wrestlers, you must not forget that the two of them once were known as "The Dream Team"! Hell, they even captured the WWE Tag Team Title and held it for around 9 months before going their separate ways.
7) The U.S. Express
While The U.S. Express went on to bigger success outside this tag team, Barry Windham and Mike Rotunda were widely considered two of the best "up and comers" when they signed with the WWE. They were able to capture the WWE Tag Team Title twice, however they only managed to hold on to the belts for a combined 6 months. Ouch!
6) Tony Garea and Rick Martel
Tony Garea was known for his work in tag team action in the WWE, but his most popular and successful tag team was with none other than Martel. The two of them were able to capture the tag titles twice and even had some sweet feuds with the Moondogs and the Wild Samoans.
5) Mr. Fuji and Mr. Saito
Most people will remember Mr. Fuji for his manager days in the WWE, however long time WWE fans will remember Fuji for his tag team with Mr. Saito....(and Professor Tanaka, but that was in the 70's!)
4) The Wild Samoans
You knew the WWE Hall-of-Famers were going to appear on this list and here they are. The 3-time WWE Tag Team Champions may even deserve the top spot, but since this is my list...this is as high as they get!
3) The British Bulldogs
When you think of 1980's WWE, you can't help but think of the Dynamite Kid and Davey Boy Smith. They had some of the best matches out of any of the other teams on this list and were big time over with the crowd. Who can forget the Bulldogs classic encounters with the Hart Foundation? NOT ME!
2) The Hart Foundation
And speaking of The Hart Foundation. In the late 1980's, Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart and Bret "The Hitman" Hart were THE team to watch out for. They were great in the ring and their look with the pink and black was something that stuck in your head. The Hart Foundation helped mold Bret Hart into the legend that he became and it all started here....
1) Demolition
"Here comes the Ax....."
"And here comes the Smasher..."
Who can forget those lyrics? The team of Ax and Smash remains one of my favorite tag teams to this day. Seriously. If I put together a list of my all-time favorite tag teams, Demolition would be ranked on it and more than likely ahead of the Legion of Doom! GASP! I can't believe I just said that! Perhaps I should have a "Top 10 Demolition Moments" next week? I'm sure the 1989 Royal Rumble would make that list. Either way, when I talk of WWE tag teams from the 1980's....Demolition takes the cake for me! That reminds me, where the hell is a Demolition DVD? I would be ALL over that sucker!
YouTube! Find Of The Week!
Demolition vs. The Powers of Pain...great times!
And that's it for me this week. Remember, don't be a stranger to 411! Bookmark the site and visit it countless times a day. Hell, be brave and make it your homepage! Trust me, it will make you a better person......
See you next Saturday back in the Squared Circle! Until then, you can find me on MySpace or Facebook! I also recently broke down and got a Twitter as well!
I -seriously- doubt that any Raw viewers turned the channel to watch "Jon and Kate plus 8". Two completely different audiences there...

The Powers of Pain were a tag team in the NWA & feuded with the road warriors before they joined the WWF

"The Powers of Pain - The Warlord and The Barbarian were two scary dudes. So the WWE decided to throw them together as a tag team that would rival Demolition. "
Weren't they a tag team before WWE? Weren't they part of the first clash of the champions?
Posted By: TJ (Guest) on May 30, 2009 at 12:26 AM
The Powers of Pain actually beat demolition when they were champs multiple times on the house show circuit. The titles didn't change hands because tito brought them in to wrestle for Strikeforce after WM4 wehn Martel was injured. I remember marking out huge for the 3 count, then groaning when Demo got the belts handed back to them. I have created all of these teams on Legends game on ps3 and relive the glory days.

I had no idea Val Venis was so popular in 2009!
Really if wrestling fans are watching a show about a woman with 8 kids having an affair on Monday night, Val would have to be the dude. Who else could reach the sides at that point?
Posted By: Josh (Guest) on May 30, 2009 at 01:27 AM
the wcw dvd still wont be as good as it should be due to:
lex luger-he wrestled for the wwf sunday and was on nitro monday. he officially started the monday night wars.
no sting, steiner, booker t, kevin nash, and scott hall.
what about ecw's role?-no dudleys, heyman, sabu, rvd, franchise. pretty anyone who was in all three during this period.

Where are the Killer Bees
Posted By: Crin (Guest) on May 30, 2009 at 01:50 AM
They can't get anyone good for the dvd is because all of them are in TNA.

"Top 10 Demolition Moments"
YES please...
"It really should have been released 5+ years ago, but why complain now? "
I don't understand that logic. More time and reflection I feel will make this a more balanced doc (without seeing it of course) but if it were put out way earlier it would have been a huge hatchet job.
Posted By: Mark (Guest) on May 30, 2009 at 02:39 AM
That's too bad Vince won't let Macho man and warrior in the HOF. Maybe TNA can make a HOF and put guys in that WWE don't elect. Hey, that would give TNA a lot of creditability!
Posted By: Guest#4626 (Guest) on May 30, 2009 at 03:10 AM
It just goes to show that ratings mean squat. Americans will watch anything that is tasteless!

The fact that the Road Warriors, not only aren't in the top 10, but don't even get an honorable mention, invalidates this entire list.

Its top WWE tag team from the 80's. L.O.D was still stiffing people in the NWA at this point.

LOD did not debut in WWF until mid-1990

The category was Top WWF Teams of the "1980's"----LOD didn't make their WWF debut till summer "1990".
Literacy is your friend.

legion of doom didnt join WWF till 1990
so how can they be top WWE tag teams of the 1980's?? some people need to know their history!
Posted By: theiceone (Guest) on May 30, 2009 at 11:35 AM
I fully agree Demolition were and are the best.

"The fact that the Road Warriors, not only aren't in the top 10, but don't even get an honorable mention, invalidates this entire list. "
Umm, you obviously were born after the 1980's as The Road Warriors didn't enter the WWE until 1990, then known as the Legion of Doom. And, if you read the heading of the list, it's the Ten Greatest WWE Tag Teams of the 1980's. Gotta wrestle for the company in the 80's the make the list!
Posted By: Dave (Guest) on May 30, 2009 at 12:14 PM
At first I didn't agree with your top three (I felt the Harts and the Bulldogs should have been the top 2) but the more I thought about it, it made sense.
I hated Demolition but they were a very Dominate tag team. Holding the Tag Team titles 3 times during 1988-1990.
The Hart Foundation were magic during their heel run and more so during their Face time. Even though their was a long period in between title reigns they were still force to be reckon with.
The Bulldogs unfortunately would never be the same after Dynamite Kid's back injury but even more so it was hard to see them as a dominate team when they were barely getting by the skin of their teeth against the Hart or Sheik and Volkoff.
Posted By: Tony Forever (Guest) on May 30, 2009 at 12:14 PM
Therefore--just to really piss you off--teams like the Young Stallions, the Killer Bees, the Bolsheviks, Los Conquistadors, and even Steve Lombardi and Barry Horowitz (I'm sure they teamed at least once then!) would be ranked on this list, instead of the L.O.D.!
Posted By: Dave (Guest) on May 30, 2009 at 12:16 PM
the road warriors debuted as LOD in the wwf in 1990. that makes them ineligible for this list.
Posted By: Guest#3120 (Guest) on May 30, 2009 at 12:26 PM
Wasn't Sean "1,2,3 Kid" Waltman the Komet Kid? I thought that was the gimmick, he went from Komet Kid to Hurricane Kid to "Blank" Kid and 123 stuck when he beat Razor on Raw.
Posted By: Max Moon (Guest) on May 30, 2009 at 01:02 PM
The harts are over the bulldog. They had more better matches, innovative and last longer.I would have them ahead of any tag team in the wwf because there matches were always great and they had so many innovative moves. The Hardy's are good but alot of there moves are b.s. Hart foundation are more realistic with it. But overall LOD is the best. WWF it goes to the Hart foundation.
Posted By: hartfan (Guest) on May 30, 2009 at 01:06 PM
Oh wwf team of the 80's if you dont say Hart Foundation you are retarded. Frome Wrestlmania 2("86") and on you got to be kidding me. fueds with the killer bees, British Bulldogs, strikefource, rythm & blues so on and so on. they won the tag team in the 80"s more then bulldogs and demolition but there matches were alway great. bulldogs I would put in 2 demolition didn't really make a name for themself untill 88 so would you really say that they should be 1. Maybe number 3 but is was all about the harts and bulldogs when they came in and the hartfoundation were alway's on tv having great matches. Even when you think of the bulldogs you think of the hartfoundation. When you think of the hart foundaton you think of: Bret, Anvil, Jimmy, titles, danny davis, all there fueds they had, matches they had, Wrestlemanis 2,3, Heart Attack. Did the Bulldogs even have a tag team finisher? I'm Just Sayin!
Posted By: hartfan (Guest) on May 30, 2009 at 01:15 PM
LOD shouldn't be on the list because this is wwf teams of the 80's. Clean your glasses, Lod wasn't even in the wwf in the 80's.
Posted By: Ax (Guest) on May 30, 2009 at 01:17 PM
The Powers of Pain tagged in the NWA and had a feud with the Road Warriors before joining the WWF. The big angle was that they blinded Animal during a weightlifting challenge and he had to wear a Jason type mask to wrestle. The Powers of Pain left NWA before the big pay-off match with the Warriors. Shortly there after, the Road Warriors followed Powers of Pain to the WWF.

Of course, this means that there will be two people dressed up like Jon and Kate on an upcoming Raw. You heard it hear first.
Posted By: bighustle (Guest) on May 30, 2009 at 01:44 PM
The Road Warriors were not even in the WWF in the 80's at all. Remember that they were in the Starrcade 89 Future Shock Round Robin Tournament with Seiners, Wild Samoans and Doom
Posted By: Guest#6884 (Guest) on May 30, 2009 at 01:48 PM
I think the reason there hasn't been a Demolition DVD or a Hall of Fame induction is because Ax sued Vince when he left for the usage of the Demolition name. Apparently Vince won, but I don't know how Ax and Smash are using the Demolition name on the indies or appearances.

Can't believe I just watched a whole 10 minutes of Max Moon (although it wasn't that bad a match.) The "Mike Tyson" stuff on commentary was horrible though and why did Doink just wander out for no reason. I'd forgotten how bad WWE was at certain points in the early 90's.
Posted By: Baron Skinny (Guest) on May 30, 2009 at 03:03 PM
Isn't it a shame that the Tag Teams nowadays don't get given a proper name, instead they are just known as "Carrlito and Primo" or "Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas" for example?!

It's too bad the Soul Patrol of Rocky Johnson and Tony Atlas didn't make your list. Both are the first black champions in WWWF/WWF/WWE history, as well as WWE Hall of Famers.
I have to admit that the teams mentioned were all great. I think the Mega Powers, Twin Towers, Killer Bees and Bushwackers were also pretty memorable.

It's amazing to watch the countless numbers of morons comment on the same thing said by Guest. We don't need 400 corrections of the Road Warriors not in the WWF in the 80's. My god, the first correction of his incorrect statement was made at 11:05 am, AND at 9:03 pm, almost 10 HOURS LATER, idiots are STILL REPEATING THE CORRECTION. Get a life.

Hart Foundation > all 80's tag teams.
Demolition would be at #3 for me, next to the Bulldogs. Otherwise, pretty good list.
I would add The Killer Bees as a H.M., but as good as they were, they were more of a fan fave jobber team. They really started to pick up some...uh, buzz (yeah, i'm goin' there) when they did "Masked Confusion" which was awesome.
I'm glad you didn't add The Rockers. A good tag team in regards to in-ring skillz, but everything else was kinda meh for me.

Its been fucking painful reading this comments section.
I can see the them now scurrying to make make the correction as fast as they can in case someone beats them to it.
Well too late kids. It looks like a dozen other people have already gotten a boner over knowing what is actually common knowledge and not some insider tidbit as you seem to think it is.
Posted By: Guest#1227 (Guest) on May 31, 2009 at 12:13 PM
Demolition was awesome!
The Bulldogs vs The Rougeaus (at SummerSlam 1 i think) is still one of my favorite tag matches of all time.
I actually dug Power & Glory--- they put 2 guys with no direction, gave them a gimmick, a tag name & a pimp manager... & they became pretty cool for a jobber tag team, that's something WWE could be doing nowadays, they do a ton of random, thrown together tag teams. it's pretty forgetable stuff...
good column
