411Mania's Squared Circle News Report 06.06.09
Posted by Dustin James on 06.06.2009
411's Dustin James is back to discuss the sudden release of Ken Kennedy, the top 10 WWE tag teams of the 1990's, and much much more!
Welcome back inside the Squared Circle! How is everyone doing this week? As always, I have been fantastic. My camping trip last weekend was STELLAR! Seriously. We had constant sunshine and 80 degree weather up in the Mt. Hood National Forest, which is a very rare thing to get! But now that I'm back in civilization it has become CONSTANT MADNESS~! Not only did the WWE surprisingly release Ken Kennedy, but then it was announced that the popular Kimbo Slice is going to be on the UFC's "Ultimate Fighter" TV show on Spike next season, and then the dude from "Kill Bill" apparently dies while having some kinky sex! I'm telling you....I don't think I can go camping again. Why? Because having no Internet connection out in the wilderness completely threw me for a loop. Not only that, but I have become so accustomed to using my iphone for everything that I was completely lost without it. I was still able to listen to music, but I wanted to surf the web and use my GPS to see some cool ass trails! Oh well, perhaps one day we will be able to invent a cell phone that allows you service EVERYWHERE.
A man can dream right?
Oh well.......
LET'S GET IT ON!!!!!
Biggest News Of The Week:
WWE Releases Ken Kennedy
Getting fired....it's worse than being bit in the ass by an alligator!
Much to everyone's surprise....the major news this week was the WWE's decision to release Ken Kennedy after an overall disappointing 4 year career with the WWE. This mainly comes as a shock seeing as Kennedy just made his return on RAW last week! What the hell could have happened that would force Vince & Co. to wipe their hands clean of a guy who once had "can't miss talent" written all over him?
Well, here's what went down courtesy of Dave Meltzer of F4Wonline.com:
"After the ten-man on Raw ended, Orton went to Kennedy backstage, not very happy and told him in direct, adamant but not loud terms, to be more careful. Kennedy, in doing a back suplex, dropped Orton on his surgically repaired shoulder. There wasn't a big blow-up or anything like that but everyone knew Orton wasn't happy about it. Orton did momentarily lose it in the ring after taking the move, as he started punching the mat in frustration before rolling out of the ring. Orton and Kennedy have been very good friends in the past and often hung out together on the road. There were people after who congratulated Orton on not losing his cool on how he handled it.
[Orton] complained of a stiff neck at television the next day and was still icing his shoulder and getting massage therapy, and made comments about Kennedy being a careless worker but it was not any kind of a major piece of conversation at the Smackdown show.
Four days later, John Laurinaitis gave Kennedy the phone call, basically saying the boss (Vince) made the call, being nice about it and saying that hopefully in the future they could do business again."
Well, in my opinion...Kennedy dropping Orton on his bad shoulder was basically the last straw for the guy. When Kennedy made his debut in the WWE in 2005 there was a lot of hope for the man. He was good on the mic and decent enough in the ring to make people see a future star in the making. However injuries and drugs stopped him from achieving that goal. I personally believe that we will see Kennedy in a WWE ring again sooner rather than later. This could be Vince's way of telling him that he's not taking anymore shit and Kennedy needs to start stepping up his game and become that star that the WWE thought he was going to be when he won the "Money in the Bank" match at WrestleMania 23. So basically, don't be surprised if you possibly see Kennedy in a WWE ring again before too long.
Remember This Guy???
TL Hopper
Back in the day, "Dirty White Boy" Tony Anthony was a fairly popular indy wrestler. While I never got the privilege to see the man's work, I did get to follow him via all the wonderful Bill Apter magazines back in the 90's (do those things still exist???). Anyway, at some point in the mid 90's Vince McMahon FINALLY signed Tony Anthony to a contract and was bringing one of the best indy workers in the world to the WWE! At the time, I had high hopes for Anthony's run in the WWE....until he made his debut. Apparently, McMahon decided that the one thing that the WWE was missing, was a wrestling plumber. Talk about dead on arrival. As TL Hopper, the wrestling plumber, Anthony had no prayer of making it in the WWE. The man was forced to carry a plunger around with him at all times and even had to wear disgusting poop covered clothes. Ya...this wasn't one of Vince's best ideas.
Poor "Dirty Boy".....
Oh, and as a special present for you.....
Here's a "CRAPTASTIC" video featuring TL Hopper, the New Rockers, recap of the Smoking Gunns break-up, and Freddie Joe Floyd!
Random News Bits:
- Chris Masters will be returning to the WWE. The "master" of the "Masterlock" reportedly met with Vince McMahon last week and the two agreed on a deal. This weirdest part about this whole situation is that I was JUST wondering what had happened to Masters the other day. Hopefully the man has improved his in-ring skills as I was actually a fan of his "can't escape the Masterlock gimmick" as well as his entrance.
- Warner Brothers has a $33 million bid to buy the assets from Midway. If this deal does go through you can bet your paycheck that we have seen the end of TNA's run in the video game world. Unless of course someone else decides to make one down the road (which will hopefully be better than the piece of crap Midway released...).
- Shane Douglas and Raven were only brought into TNA to be apart of the Slammiversary theme. Neither man has signed a long-term deal with the company, however there is talk of keeping Douglas on full-time in a manager role. I personally would have no problem with that considering Douglas OWNS on the mic!
- Elijah Burke and Shawn Spears wrestled a tryout match for TNA. Word is that both men looked good and have a shot at being signed. You really can't blame TNA for bringing in talent like this, especially Burke.....
- Randy Orton made an appearance on a Televisa sports show in Mexico this past weekend. The interview was going as planned until the host mentioned all of Orton's past injuries and called him "fragile". That's when Orton blew a gasket and started staring the host down and even said "You wanna talk shit to me, look at me and call me fragile. I'll head-butt your teeth down your throat!". Wowwwwwww. I guess we all know how to piss off Orton now! "Orton is FRAGILE" signs will start appearing all over WWE TV anyday now....(PS: this could be a work according to "The Sun", a British tabloid)
- The reason Kane isn't being used right now is due to the fact that creative doesn't have anything for him at the moment. I would personally like to see the WWE do the "Three Faces of Foley" gimmick with him. I'm probably just looking for a way to see the return of "Fake" Diesel and Isaac Yankem D.D.S to WWE television! DO IT~!
- Smackdown vs. RAW 2010's cover will feature John Cena, Undertaker, Rey Mysterio, Edge, and Randy Orton. I know, I know....we are ALL surprised!
- There are currently no plans to team Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin full-time. The WWE still has high hopes for Benjamin as a singles wrestler. Can you blame them?!?! The dude is GOLD!
- Ric Flair has announced that he will be quitting ROH and is going to sign a new deal with the WWE. Don't look forward to seeing him wrestle though. Vince plans on making Flair's retirement stick as long as possible.

Wrestling Top 10 Lists:
Top 10 WWE Tag Teams of the 1990's
(There were a lot of great tag teams in the WWE during the 1990's. Would you like to know who I consider my top 10 WWE tag teams of the 1990's? OF COURSE YOU DO! Before you read it, I feel I should fill you in on my voting criteria. I'm giving A LOT of points to teams who captured the WWE Tag Team Title. Why? Because it's the top of the totem pole for every tag team. Also, I'm not factoring in ANYTHING any of these teams did outside of the WWE or the 1990's. And with that out of the way.....)
This list IS IN a particular order......
Honorable Mentions:
Demolition - BY GAWD~! My #1 WWE tag team of the 1980's only comes in as an honorable mention for the best WWE tag team of the 1990's. That's probably because they went ahead and added a third member (CRUSH), who would later fully replace Ax. Either way, they didn't accomplish as much in the 90's as they did in the 80's.
The Hardy Boyz - Before you get your panties in a twist, just remember that the Hardy Boyz accomplished a lot more in the 2000's than they did in the 1990's. Look it up!
The Rockers - The Rockers once again come in as an honorable mention. While I was a HUGE fan of The Rockers, they were never able to stay atop the WWE's tag team division. Not to mention the WWF in the 90's was PACKED with great tag teams, which is why this list is so damn long.
The Hart Foundation - The Hart Foundation didn't stick together for very long in the 1990's. Why? Because Bret Hart decided he wanted to go on to bigger and better things. As for Jim Neidhart? He decided to team up with Owen Hart and create "The New Foundation". Needless to say, that didn't work out too well.
The Headshrinkers - I don't care what anyone says. I LOVED The Headshrinkers. Hell, I just love the crazy Samoan gimmick as a whole. But together, Fatu and Samu were awesome. They lost a little bit of luster once Sionne (The Barbarian) joined, but I won't punish them too hard for that.
AND NOW.....THE TOP 10!!!
10) The Nasty Boys
Brian Knobbs and Jerry Sags were a scary duo for any tag team to face. Why? Because of their stench! One of the classic Nasty Boys moves was the "Pit Stop" where one Nasty Boy would shove their opponents face into the other Nasty Boy's arm pit. Yes, it was just as gross as it sounds. Still, you have to give credit to The Nasty Boys. Their gimmick was so good that when they jumped from WCW to the WWE, Vince decided to keep the gimmick. That almost NEVER happens!
9) The Acolytes
What happens when you put two tough sons of bitches like Bradshaw and Faarooq together? You get one ass kicking tag team, that's what happens! After numerous failed gimmicks in the WWE, Bradshaw was looking for someone to help him out and then along came Faarooq....fresh off his run as leader of the Nation of Domination. Together, they managed to capture the WWE Tag Team Title twice in the the 1990's. Now, say it with me......DAMN~!
8) Owen Hart and Yokozuna
As singles wrestlers they were a success in the WWE, so when they decided to team up, it came as a surprise to no one that they managed to capture the WWE Tag Team Title on two occasions. Not only that, but they were entertaining as all hell. Who would have thought that these two would have made such a memorable team?
7) The Quebecers
Ohh yes. The Quebecers. As a kid, I HATED these two. Hell, I hated Jacques Rougeau with a passion as a young one. However, over time I have learned to appreciate Rougeau and his time teaming up with Pierre was money! You also can't forget that they won the tag titles three times and had "fantastic" feuds with the likes of Men on a Mission and Marty Jannetty & The 1-2-3 Kid! WOOOO!
6) The Steiner Brothers
The Steiner Brothers had nowhere near the success in WWE that they enjoyed in WCW. However, they did manage to capture the WWE Tag Team Titles on two occasions and had a pretty good feud with Money Inc. It's really too bad that the WWE didn't utilize The Steiners better, however they still manage to crack my list!
5) The Rock 'N' Sock Connection
Mick Foley and The Rock were two of the WWE's biggest stars in the late 90's. When the WWE decided to throw these two huge stars together, nobody could predict how strong the chemistry between the two would be. They managed to capture the WWE Tag Team Titles three times and also hold the record for the highest rated RAW segment of all-time. Yep, I sure do miss The Rock......
4) The Smoking Gunns
I still remember the first time I saw the promos for Billy & Bart Gunn. I thought to myself..."Ya, I give these guys a week." Much to my surprise they lasted MUCH longer than that (especially in the case of Billy) and were very successful in the WWE in the mid 90's. As a matter of fact, they were the kings of the WWE's tag team division in the mid 90's (which isn't saying much) and had a personal favorite feud of mine involving Sunny and The Godwins. You know, sometimes I miss mid 90's WWE. It sure was a crappy good time.
3) Legion of Doom
The Legion of Doom, much like The Steiners Brothers, enjoyed way more success in the NWA/WCW than in the WWE. However, during the 1990's...the Legion of Doom had a few good runs in the WWE. At SummerSlam 1991 they won the WWE tag team titles and became the first team to capture a tag title in the AWA, NWA, and WWE. The two then left the WWE in 1992, but returned in 1997 and had some decent feuds with the Hart Foundation and the New Age Outlaws. After feuding with the NAO over the tag titles the two took some time off before being re-introduced as LOD 2000! Now THAT's HIP~! Not only that, but the LOD also got a new member in the form of Droz (Puke) and were forced into a horrible storyline that portrayed Hawk as an alcoholic (which he was). It was a bad end for the Road Warriors in the WWE.....
2) Money Inc.
When I was growing up I was a huge fan of the "Million Dollar Man". Towards the end of his WWE run the WWE decided to team him up with I.R.S. and few could predict how successful they would be. Of course, if you actually thought about it, the two were heat machines so it's no wonder the duo worked so well. The two of them were only a team for around 18 months, however they were able to make an impact. Not only did they win the WWE Tag Team Titles instantly but they also had some good feuds with the likes of the Legion of Doom, the Natural Disasters and the Nasty Boys. That was before they decided to piss off Hulk Hogan's best friend, Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake. By attacking Beefcake with I.R.S's briefcase, Money Inc. was forced to face Beefcake and Hogan at WrestleMania 9 in what was the most hyped up match going into the event. After WrestleMania 9, the duo then feuded with the Steiner Brothers before an injury forced DiBiase to retire from in-ring action. Money Inc. was a great tag team and really could have enjoyed a long run with the company had DiBiase not got injury. For shame....oh well, we still have our memories!
1) The New Age Outlaws
OH YOU DIDN'T KNOW??? YOUR ASS BETTA CALL SOMEBODY!!!!....Of course "Road Dogg" Jesse James and "Bad Ass" Billy Gunn are #1 on this list! Who else captured the tag team titles FIVE times? Who else managed to get themselves over by wearing South Park t-shirts? Who else were so over with the crowd that the WWE decided to throw them into DX? I shouldn't even have to go into detail about the NAO's WWE career...if you don't know, then you should really catch up on your wrestling history. Know what I mean?

The Rock and Sock connection? They were a make shift tag team. No Demolition? You fail.

Validity of the points they're making aside, those two just come off like a couple of dimwits in that interview. Don't do drugs, indeed.

You're on crack if you're putting the Steiners 4 slots below the New Age Outlaws. Steiners WERE the tag team of the 90's. They were innovative, exciting and just plain dominant. The New Age Outlaws were essentially two jobbers who got the luckiest break of their careers when they were teamed together, and just happened to get enough heat to join the hottest faction in the company in 1998.
And WTF? No Hollywood Blondes?
Here are the top 5 teams IMO:
1. Steiners
2. Hollywood Blondes
3. Outsiders
4. New Age Outlaws
5. Eliminators

You're probably gonna get some shit for not listing The Outsiders, Edge and Christian, Harlem Heat, Public Enemy, and a ton more. Get ready.
Posted By: Steve307 (Guest) on June 06, 2009 at 12:04 AM
I would have to give the Natural Disasters an honorable mention as well. I was also a big fan of the Orient Express (Bad Company in AWA)

some of you idiots obviouslt cant read, as it says WWF tag teams

Ok, people seem to be missing that this is the top ten WWF tag teams of the 90's, not tag teams in general. The Hollywood Blondes, The Eliminators, Harlem Heat, etc. never wrestled in the WWF.
I do have to say though that I think The British Bulldog and Owen Hart deserve as much a mention up there as Yokozuna and Owen Hart.
Posted By: BlackoutCreature (Guest) on June 06, 2009 at 12:40 AM
Some people are so damn stupid.....
Its the Top Tag Teams in the WWF, you inbred retards!! The Hollywood Blondes, Outsiders and other teams that you mentioned weren't in the WWF!!!!
God, no wonder people think wrestling fans are morons.....

-bulldog, owen
-macho man, warrior
-headshrinkers
-hbk/diesel
Posted By: rey (Guest) on June 06, 2009 at 01:07 AM
hahaha that's the top 10 teams of the 90's? seriously. owen and yoko? even owen and bulldog were a better team than that mess. the smoking gunns? puhleaze! when the wwf brought in pg 13 in 95 to work against the gunns, pg 13 had to call the match. AND THE GUNNS WERE THE CHAMPS! no hollywood blondes? no heavenly bodies? no harlem heat? no los gringos locos? is this really a top ten teams of the 90's list? or a top ten team gimmicks of the 90's list? that's all i have to say
Posted By: this guy is kidding right? (Guest) on June 06, 2009 at 01:11 AM
He listed top WWE tag teams; NOT top wrestling tag teams from all promotions.
Posted By: Michael (Guest) on June 06, 2009 at 01:16 AM
Like the dude stated, it's teas of the 90's!!! In WWE!!!
Using ! to make it clear.
The Bulldogs were gone by 1991 (if that), Demolition (due to Axe being unable to wrestle were done by 94 and really didn't do that much apart from being a heel faction.
Though I think the Steniners rate way above NAO's, from the WWE/F point that he is making he made the right choice's.
Posted By: prankstar (Guest) on June 06, 2009 at 03:01 AM
New Age Outlaws the most overrated tag team in Wrestling History. Both were poor wrestlers and The Road Dogg's mic work involved him saying exactly the same thing every night without any variation what so ever. How they became popular I have no idea.
Posted By: J (Guest) on June 06, 2009 at 07:15 AM
the outlaws were the obvious choice as #1 and the interview is dead on true.
Posted By: fred (Guest) on June 06, 2009 at 08:02 AM
I apologize for missing the WWF reference.
If that is the case, then the Outlaws probably got # 1, if only because the WWF tag team scene in the 90's pretty much sucked (although today is much worse). One team that was missing was Owen/Bulldog, which was a better and longer-lasting makeshift team than Owen/Yoko.
Posted By: Michael L (Guest) on June 06, 2009 at 08:12 AM
I've got 2 words 4 ya...
BEVERLY BROTHERS~!
90's teams sucked.

Badass interview, those guys seem like the kinda dudes you could hang out and have a beer or toot a line with. fuck HHH
Posted By: Walt B (Guest) on June 06, 2009 at 09:07 AM
No mention of Bulldog/Owen?? That's pretty weird, concidering you put Owen/Yoko, it was basicaly the same idea (put two individuals and making a great team in a workrate and entertaiment point of view). Put the Quebecers was a god move anyway, for me they were the best 90' team, they always work together, à la Jacques et Raymond Rougeau, the Quebec Style was very interesting back in those years (it's sade when you saw la Resistance after those piece of art). My top ten is: 10 Hbk-Diesel 9 Road Warriors 8: Head Shikers 7: Smoking Gun 6: Rock and Sock Conection 5:APA 4: Money Inc 3: The Steiner Brothers 2:Owen/Bulldog
1: New Age Outlaws
Posted By: Kalaan (Guest) on June 06, 2009 at 09:13 AM
3. Headbangers
2. Owen & Bulldog
1. New Age Outlaws

Yeah, thanks for the 15 friendly reminders that it was a WWF-only list. How dare I miss that. I'm clearly an inbred, retarded, terrible wrestling fan for making that mistake. Apologies all around.
Douches.

Ummm...harlem heat? Natural diasters? The outsiders? Jeerk off
Posted By: jmizzle (Guest) on June 06, 2009 at 11:38 AM
E&C were awesome, and still are indvidually-- but I didn't think they really got over till around 2000... so that explains the absence here

your telling me you don't owen and bulldog? they had one of the longest tag title reigns in history, yet you through in the rock and sock connection over them? garbage
Posted By: Cody (Guest) on June 06, 2009 at 03:22 PM
What?! This is a WWF-only list?! What about the Eliminators? Or the Gangstas? Or Or Harlem Heat? Or the Outsiders?!!!1!ELEVENTY
...brb, medication...
They were ALL WWF tag team champions in the 90's, yes they were. No chance I'm a failure. None. And that HUGE WWF logo at the beginning of the article? Meaningless. Obviously meant to distract the readers from the AWESOMENESS of non-WWE tag teams.
Sweet Captain Christ, the dumb.
Posted By: DERP (Guest) on June 06, 2009 at 08:03 PM
Wow. That list was...underwhelming. Owen & Yoko make it over Owen & Bulldog. Really? Owen & Bulldog offered probably the best WWF tag match of the '90s era against Austin & Michaels. Owen & Yoko were just sort of there for a while.
10) Headbangers - Underrated. One of WWE's first attempts at an ECW-style character. Had Raven gone to the WWF instead of WCW, they probably would've gotten more recognition as a part of his Flock.
9) NAO: Their stuff doesn't hold up any more. It was catchy at the time, but hindsight reveals they probably could've inserted just about anyone into Gunn's role and they would've succeeded. They got over based almost solely on Road Dogg's charisma.
8) Smoking Gunns - I was a fan, I can't lie. They were goofy as shit but still sort of fun. I lost all interest in Billy once they broke up.
7) The Quebecers - Another severely underrated team that pretty much always drew decent heat. They were always sort of an afterthought compared to other teams despite being one of the more technically-gifted tag teams in WWE.
6) Shawn & Diesel - Helped to further make both guys look like legit stars, and many teams have since stolen their pose which shows some sort of legacy, at the very least.
5) The Steiners - Should have been a much bigger deal than they were. Still had a decent run.
4) The Headshrinkers - Borrowed from the Wild Samoans, but still entertaining in their own right.
3) Money Inc - Probably the top team of the early to mid '90s. One of the few teams allowed 3 reigns, which was rare given the era.
2) LOD - Even with the goofiness of Rocco, they still were a big deal. Figured huge into marketing at the time for WWF/E, and didn't damage their legacy.
1) Bulldog & Owen - The WWF/E team of the '90s, no question. Had a pretty substantial reign. Got great matches out of pretty much any team they faced. Provided entertaining moments like the Bulldog/Owen rivalry and the earlier mentioned match against Austin & Michaels. No one even comes close.

My god, at the end of this year, when 411 gets to do all of the "Best of the 2000's" lists, the tag teams are going to crush those of the '90's!!
Even if tag wrestling is down, this decade kills the '90's. It's nice to be reminded of the big picture once in a while.
