411Mania's Squared Circle News Report 06.13.09
Posted by Dustin James on 06.13.2009

Welcome back inside the Squared Circle! How is everyone doing this week? As always, I have been fantastic. It's been a BUSY week in the world of professional wrestling. Can't say that's a bad thing as it finally gives me something to talk about. Most of the time I'm searching for something to talk about but not this week! We had more WWE releases, wrestlers vs. 411mania, & lots more! So sit back and enjoy the ride.......

Oh, don't forget that UFC 99 is tonight and once the show ends the countdown to UFC 100 finally begins! So make sure you check out UFC 99 tonight because I'm sure Rich Franklin and Wanderlei Silva will put on one hell of a show for everyone.....

Now.......

LET'S GET IT ON!!!!!

Biggest News Of The Week:

Mick Foley vs. 411mania.com!

It's Foley vs. the 411 comment section...!!

After everything that has happened this past week, like Umaga getting released, Batista getting injured, and Vickie Guerrero quitting the WWE....this is the biggest news story of the week! Why? Because it involves all of you! Apparently WWE legend and current TNA headliner Mick Foley is angry at some of the 411 faithful who were a little rough on ol Cactus Jack's idea on a new book in 411's own comments section:

"I think it's great that so many of the wrestling websites pick up and print my blogs. I was interested to know what kind of feedback the Knoebel's Grove Park was getting, so I did something a little unusual for me - I went on a couple of those sites. I have to admit, I was a little surprised by all the negativity, especially on Wrestling 411, and can't help but think that these fans who post comments can't be indicative of most big wrestling fans - which would be people who acually seem to LIKE wrestling. There were 15 comments about my upcoming book, and 14 of them were negative - with the one person who was positive being made fun of for having the audacity to make a typing error.

I would just like to ask a little favor of these "fans" who made the comments: let me know a little bit about you. Honestly. As many of them pointed out, this will be my fourth autobiographical book, so my life is literally something of an open book. Let me know a little bit about yourselves. I'll check back on the 411 site in a couple of days, and see if any of the commenters will care to tell me their age, if they happen to be married, have kids, what they do for work, and what it is they currently like or dislike about wrestling. Specifically, I would like the one person who said he'd heard enough stories about me helping youngsters to last him a lifetime to let me know if he's ever done a single thing to help out someone in need. Because my gut says "no".

Here's the actual thread that Foley is talking about in his little rant. Let's take a look at some of these gems:

"Wow! Cactus Jacks favorite amusment parks! I can't wait to read this!
he can talk about the Nestea Plunge coaster, on that one the cars roll backwards and then smash into the ground!

Or what about the electricfied barb wire thumb tack flaming table exploding death coaster! Bang Bang!"

The entire book isn't about actual carnivals, because then I would actually buy it!

"Come on, 4 autobiographies in 10 years, who the hell cares?"

This one falls under the category of "If you don't want to read it, don't buy it". It's obvious someone cares if he's writing ANOTHER book.

"As much as I like Mick Foley and think he seems like a really nice, stand up sort of bloke. I think I've read enough of his charity or 'how he went out of his way for some youngster' stories to last me a life time!"

THIS guy is the one Foley really targeted in his rant above. Someone got their 15 minutes!

"Seems Mick didn't finish writing his title: "Crossing the Line: My life as a Prostitute"

And this one falls under the category of....

Basically, to sum it all up....Foley just got a little angry upon seeing the comments left by some young kids/douchies. If he were to check out the thread now, he would see there's actual positive stuff about him along with the negative. That's what happens when you post stuff online for people to "critique". Nobody knows that better than us 411mania writers. There's always going to be someone who dislikes you, you just have to be able to suck it up and move on. Who cares if 15 people on a website are hating on you? I get angry comments all the time in this lovely column, but they are usually left by my relatives.

In the end, I can't really hate on the people who made the negative comments due to the whole "opinion" thing...it is what it is. But if you are going to hate on Foley, don't hate on him for wanting to write a book. Hate on him for this....

Yaaaaaaaaaaaa............

Remember This Guy???

Naked Mideon

I have a confession to make. I'm a fan of Dennis Knight as a performer. I liked him in WCW as one half of Tex Slazenger and Shanghai Pierce, I liked him even more when he signed with the WWE and became PHINEAS I. GODWIN (well, the heel version at least!), and he even got cooler when he became "possessed" by The Undertaker and became Mideon. However, there's a line.....

......and the WWE crossed it! For some reason, Vince McMahon's "creative" team thought it would be a good idea to make Mideon an "exhibitionist" who would interrupt matches wearing nothing but a fanny pack. Talk about something NOBODY needed/wanted to see! It's really quite a shame that this had to happen. The only good news is, I can't actually recall him wrestling with the gimmick. I know he did, I just have no recollection of it. But trust me, it's not like that's a bad thing!

For those of you who were unable to experience "Naked" Mideon, here ya go, and kids please remember.....

WARNING!

Random News Bits:

- As everyone knows, Umaga and the WWE recently parted ways in a move that PISSES me off! Umaga was one of my favorite wrestlers to watch on WWE TV now a days and I hate to see the guy go. As of right now all signs say that Umaga was in trouble with management for a currently unknown reason. Perhaps we will find out why this went down in the next few days but as of right now, we will have to deal with the YOU-MAN-GA vs. Samoa Joe "dream" feud in TNA talk.....

- Another recently departed was none other than RAW GM Vickie Guerrero. The good news is that she quit the company to reportedly spend more time with her daughters. Good for her. I'm sure she made a good chunk of change during her run in the WWE and I'm sure she'll be fine and we could potentially see her again down the road. Rumor is that Ric Flair could take her spot as the new RAW GM.

- The final WrestleMania numbers are in and the show was able to pull in 955,000 buys worldwide and 579,000 domestically. Those numbers are down from last year but then again, what WWE PPV's numbers are raising?

- Taz posted the following on his Facebook page:

"The prison sentence is almost done...can't wait."

He's available to work anywhere he wants in the beginning of July. I wonder where that will be? Any guesses?????

- Mickie James is reportedly putting together a country music demo. Who isn't trying to get into country music these days? First you had Jessica Simpson, now you have Hootie from Hootie & The Blowfish and now possible even MICKIE F'N JAMES! Which reminds me....

YUMMY~!

- Evan Bourne recently sat down with The Sun and had the following to say regarding the comparison between today's ECW and the old ECW that aired on TNN:

"You can't make a direct comparison between the rosters, as we're so different. But if you compare ECW now to the old ECW on TNN, we blow that show out of the water. Every week we blow it out of the water."

There's that "opinion" thing I was talking about earlier.....

(Credit goes to The Wrestling Observer for the above news!)

Wrestling Top 10 Lists:

Top 10 WCW Tag Teams of the 1990's

(There were a lot of great tag teams in WCW during the 1990's. Would you like to know who I consider my top 10 WCW tag teams of the 1990's? OF COURSE YOU DO! Before you read it, I feel I should fill you in on my voting criteria. I'm giving A LOT of points to teams who captured the WCW Tag Team Title. Why? Because it's the top of the totem pole for every tag team. Also, I'm not factoring in ANYTHING any of these teams did outside of the WCW or the 1990's. And with that out of the way.....)

This list IS IN a particular order......

Honorable Mentions:

The Skyscrapers - Does one of those men above look mighty familiar? Well, he should! Before he went on to GREAT success with the WWE as "The Undertaker", "Mean" Mark Callous replaced Sid Vicious as a member of Teddy Long's "The Skyscrapers" team alongside Dan Spivey (Waylon Mercy). This team had a great chance to to become legendary, but things fell apart and they were never able to get anywhere near "legendary" status. SHAME~!

DOOM - Ron Simmons and Butch Reed were one of my favorite tag teams as a kid. It didn't matter to me whether they wore masks and were managed by Woman or if they were unmasked and were managed by Teddy Long! It didn't matter....because these two tough sons of bitches meant business! Great tag team indeed!

The Southern Boys/The Young Pistols - When people think of Tracy Smothers and Steve Armstrong as "The Southern Boys", they more than likely remember this team as a jobber tag team. Well, that's exactly what they were! Except for the fact that they are former NWA United States Tag Team champs and also had a pretty memorable heel turn as well! Who doesn't remember the Southern Boys turning heel during an interview with Eric Bischoff? IT WAS CLASSIC WCW PEOPLE!

Stars N' Stripes - It's pretty hard to imagine that a team consisting of "The Patriot" and Marcus Alexander Bagwell can be featured on a "Top 10 WCW tag teams list", but that's exactly what you see! Believe it or not, in the mid-1990's, "Stars N' Stripes" managed to capture the WCW tag team titles on more than one occasion! I swear...I'm not lying! It's actually too bad that this team didn't stay together. After they broke up, Bagwell went on to team with Scotty Riggs as "The American Males". Say it with me now.....EEEEEWWWWW!!!

Pretty Wonderful - OH MY GOD! The world has officially ended! Paul Roma came THIS close to cracking a top 10 list in wrestling that didn't have the word "WORST" in front of it! Say what you will about the career of Roma in WCW, but one thing is for sure, his team with Paul Orndorff was easily the best run that Roma had with the company (face it, he wasn't Horseman material) seeing as the two managed to capture the WCW tag team titles on two different occasions! I know...it's amazing isn't it?

AND NOW.....THE TOP 10!!!

10) The Midnight Express

One of the greatest tag teams of the 1980's didn't see much action in the 1990's. As a matter of fact, they were only together for 9 months during the 1990's! However, it was a good 9 months! Bobby Eaton, Stan Lane, and Jim Cornette helped usher in WCW's tag team scene of the 1990's and will always be ranked near the top of the best tag teams of all-time list....no matter who puts it together!

9) The Road Warriors

Believe it or not, Hawk and Animal didn't have THAT much success in WCW in the 1990's. As a matter of fact, they had more success in WWE during the 1990's than they did in WCW. The Road Warriors started 1990 as members of the WCW roster, however they left the company for the WWE in May of the same year. They actually didn't return to WCW until 1996 and even then they only stuck around for 6 months before returning to the WWE. So now you see why this legendary tag team isn't ranked any higher?

8) The Enforcers

Larry Zybsko and Arn Anderson were two bad ass sons of bitches. So why not team these two up and see what happens? Well, what happens is you get one BAD ASS tag team! Just ask Barry Windham who got his hand slammed in a car door by these two and was out of action for awhile! These two were so awesome as a tag team, that when WCW put together "The Dangerous Alliance", it was only a given that "The Enforcers" would be the muscle of the stable. That's exactly what happened until the two broke up in 1992.

7) The Fabulous Freebirds

The Freebirds are another team that enjoyed more success in the 1980's than they did in the 1990's. As a matter of fact, their WCW run in the 1990's left MUCH to be desired from this legendary tag team. Either way, Michael "PS" Hayes and Jimmy "Jam" Garvin made the most out of what they got (they were two time former WCW United States tag team champs in the 90's).....

6) The Nasty Boys

Not only were the Nasty Boys featured in last week's "Top 10 WWE Tag Team of the 1990's", but they are also featured here as well! The Nasties got their first big start in WCW in 1990. However, they didn't last long. After just months the team had left WCW for the WWE and had a good run with the "E" for a few years. It wasn't until 1993 that the Nasty Boys made their long-awaited return to WCW! In their second stint with the company, the Nasties managed to capture the WCW tag team title on three different occasions! The Nasties then went on to have a long career in WCW, but went their separate ways in 1996 after Jerry Sags got injured during a match with The Outsiders and decided to depart and sue WCW. Knobbs stuck with the company until WCW folded. You can now see him on reruns of "Hogan Knows Best" and often times on "Brooke Knows Best". Ohhhh, so THAT'S why Knobbs was able to stick around WCW for so long!

5) Steve Williams & Terry Gordy

These two were a dangerous tag team...nuff said. After teaming up in All Japan Pro Wrestling, WCW was quick to sign Gordy and Williams to their roster in 1992. It didn't take long for Gordy & Williams to capture both the WCW & NWA World tag team championships. The two didn't last long as a team in WCW, but the run that they had was GREAT! Seriously, do yourself a favor and check out The Great American Bash 92. You will then see why these two are so high on this list.

4) The Hollywood Blondes

Pop quiz hotshot! What do you get when you combine two awesome singles wrestlers who for some reason or another, are not receiving a "push" by management? You get....The Hollywood Blondes! "Stunning" Steve Austin and "Flying" Brian Pillman were two of WCW's top talents who were being wasted in WCW's mid-card, so someone got the bright idea to team these two up...and what an idea it was! Austin & Pillman became one of the most hated tag teams of all-time as well as one of the most legendary in just a span of a few months. While they were only together from late-1992 to mid-1993, the stamp that they left on the wrestling world will always be remembered.

3) The Outsiders

Kevin Nash & Scott Hall were two of the WWE's biggest stars when they made the jump to WCW in 1996. Upon entering WCW, nobody would have thought that these two would team up in a tag team and tear apart the WCW tag team scene for as long as they did. Hall & Nash not only helped usher in the "Monday Night Wars" but they also managed to capture the WCW tag team titles six different times! That's not bad for two "singles" wrestlers. nWo 4 life~!

2) The Steiner Brothers

When you think of tag teams in WCW, a lot of people will think of Rick & Scott Steiner. Who can blame them? The former University of Michigan wrestlers made their WCW debut in 1989 and were the core of the tag team division until their departure for the WWE in 1992. After a disappointing run in the WWE, The Steiners finally made their way home to WCW and found much success! Upon their return they had memorable feuds with the Road Warriors, The Outsiders, Harlem Heat, and more. They even managed to capture the WCW tag team titles again giving them six total title reigns! The Steiners dominated the WCW tag team scene until early-1998 when WCW decided to turn Scott into "Big Poppa Pump"....whatever happened to that guy anyways?

1) Harlem Heat

Booker T and Stevie Ray actually made their WCW debuts as "Kole & Kane" and were originally going to be "wrestling slaves". Wowwwww, it's a great thing those plans got changed! Instead, Booker and Stevie Ray went on to HUGE success in WCW. Seriously. They had memorable feuds with the likes of Stars N' Stripes, Sting & Lex Luger, The Outsiders, Public Enemy, The Faces of Fear, and more! Not only that, but they also managed to capture the WCW tag team title....A RECORD TEN TIMES! That's right....TEN TIMES~! That's insane! I'm sure a lot of people will have a different opinion on their top WCW team of the 1990's, but it's hard to look past Harlem Heat's lengthy run in WCW (they were in WCW from 1993-2000) and their overall title runs.

Jesus, just when you think Foley can't be any more of a whining, self obsessed douchbag, here it is. If you're going to write ANOTHER biography, if your going to unretire every 2 minutes, if your fat untalented ass is going to get another undeserved world title run, if your going to piss and moan every single time some fan dares not to like you, if you're going to be typically smug and arrogant towards the same fans,

THEN FUCK YOU. Over-rated, stuntman, carried to success by others. Falling off cages doesn't take skill you douche. Get off your own cock for a minute.

Good list, but I also must point iut the glaring ommision of Lex Luger and Sting. They teamed on and off for a long time, they were way over, and they held the gold a significant amount of time. I'd put 'em between the Outsiders and the Blonds on your list.

I'm a little shocked that a wrestler saying he read this site and came to the conclusion that the people here are a bunch of shit-heads is the best day of many of your lives.

If this was my site I might try to bury that little bit of info instead of doing everything I can to promote it.

Midnight Express beats Doom? Huh? Doom would've mauled those bitches dead. The Midnights were great in the '80s but did shitall in the '90s. Doom were at least one of the most dominant teams for the first year or two of the decade. And that pictures makes Condrey look like he has one foot in the grave. And Lane looks like a tool with the balding flattop.

I'd also place the Steiners above Harlem Heat. Hell, they're probably the best tag team of the 1990s. Harlem Heat's last 5 reigns totaled lasted less than 5 months, with each ranging from 2 weeks to a month in length. So they're worth about as much as Jarrett's 10 or so reigns as WCW Champion. They were mainly used as transitional champions from '96 on. The Steiners were consistently being placed alongside the main event. They were one of the few teams people bought against guys like Luger, Sting, the Outsiders, and so on. Their track record speaks volumes too. No one could touch them quality-wise from '90 until they left for the WWF in '92. They were on another level. And they came pretty damn close when they came back.

But the rest of the list is solid. A few thoughts after reading it though:

Bagwell didn't suck nearly as hard when he was teaming with guys like Scorpio, the Patriot, or even Riggs. I actually even kind of liked him until they tried to make him a singles star.

Too bad the Miracle Violence Connection didn't stay stateside longer. They would've been one of the top 3.

The Outsiders were cool at the time but in hindsight they were a shitty tag team and pretty much the death of WCW's tag team division. Look at all the teams beneath and above them. That's a solid list.

And on that note, compare the WWF's tag list to WCW's. It's kind of strange to consider how insanely better WCW was at booking tag teams. It's one of the few things they were better at until the late '90s. At least two of WWF's top teams, the LOD and the Steiners, were made stars in WCW/NWA. The rest of the teams here embarrass their WWF counterparts. I guess it was partly due to WCW being a Southern wrestling promotion at heart, and Southern wrestling always placed a big emphasis on tag teams. Still, kind of strange considering how inept WCW was at everything else...

sting & luger were a unique tag team. i think they were the first opposite team. sting was the uber face and luger was an ultra heel. and they were just over.

I wonder who you write this column for. It's smarky in attitude yet PG in content. Don't use so many exclamation marks!!!!

And Bourne's right. The TNN ECW wasn't very good. It was a poorly produced show with Justin Credible as champ...

One of the hardest things to believe is that the man who popularized the huracanrana in the US was Scott Steiner. (Absolutely astounding at how good he was in the ring at one point since I bet alot of current fans think the guy could never move at all.)

Good list.
But I agree with the above posters.
Sting and Lugar should be there.
Benoit/Malenko honorable mention?

Hell, if Mick wants to know anything about me, I'll be happy to oblige.

I'll start: 32, actually not living in my parent's basement (no comment on exactly when THAT ended), and I've personally defended you against some REAL hardass Flair supporters on Scott Keith's blog. Having said that, I do wonder about your sanity on many levels, like not expecting the flop of your heel turn (what happens when someone who's heel-proof forces a heel turn? Apathy, that's what) and not getting the reason why people connect The Wrestler with you -- here's a hint, and it's a BIT too blunt of me to say it like this: It happens at the end of the movie. It also happened to Misawa just now. We're all convinced it'll happen to you one of these days. THAT is why I don't watch TNA at the moment ... and why I'll run out to buy your book as soon as it comes out, oddly enough. Because I don't want Mick Foley the wrestler anymore, I want Mick Foley the author.
Oh, and I'm also a Ducks fan.

Wow, seriously, Harlem Heat number 1 and no Demolition??? Your an idiot, but at least Mick Foley makes you look smart. Mick Foley, die already.

As over as the Outsiders were they got annoying with the whole "lose the tag belts and Bischoff overturns the ruling the next night on Nitro" thing.

Also, Roma was good in "Pretty Wonderful" but AWESOME with Hercules in "Power and Glory" (I know this is a WCW list.)

Third, Mickie James would SO get it..she smashes most chicks on the WWE roster.

Dear Teddy Long,

When was Demolition in WCW? You should read your own words because you look like the idiot.

This whole Foley thing is a work, douches. You retards don't realize that Foley only said those things to get some cheap heat.

The Road Warriors should not be on this list. They were only in WCW for a little bit of 1990 and some of 1996, that's it. They didn't win any titles. Doom should've been in the top ten instead of them. Hell, Pretty Wonderful should've been in the top ten instead of them. Where's Vicious and Delicious on this list? Where's High Voltage? Where's the Blue Bloods? What about The Stud Stable? What about the Kongs? What about the Faces of Fear? What about Glacier and The Cat? What about Konnan and Rey Misterio? What about the Big Cat and the Motor City Madman? What about Mr. Hughes and Vader? What about Super Invader and anybody? What about Big Sky and the Equalizer? What about the Gambler and joey Maggs? What about Men at Work? See what I mean. Come on now...

Man I'm crazy these days. But really i should've been on the list with Sting. I teamed with him right? I DON'T KNOW!!!

I wish people would quit saying things I never said. I love High Voltage as a team and Men at Work. Chris Kanyon is my favorite guy to watch at everything. Now people, quit posting as me, it makes me look crazy, which I am not. I just like cool things like me and my handle.
