411Mania's Squared Circle News Report 06.20.09
Posted by Dustin James on 06.20.2009

Welcome back inside the Squared Circle! How is everyone doing this week? As always, I have been fantastic. Did everyone enjoy UFC 99 last weekend because I sure as hell didn't! Talk about a lackluster show going into the company's biggest show ever (UFC 100 LESNAR VS. MIR OMGFTW2000X!!!). But then again, with a card as stacked as UFC 100 is, did you honestly believe that the UFC would throw out a stacked card for UFC 99 as well? That's just not how a monopoly works people! Anywho, let's get the UFC 100 count down started! It's Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir II to unify the UFC heavyweight title, so, who do you got? I'll give you my pick in a few weeks.....

Sticking to the UFC for now...tickets for UFC 102 in Portland go on sale today! You can bet your bottom dollar I'll be getting my tickets and sitting as close to the Octagon as possible. I'm telling you right now, Portland's going to rock the socks off of the UFC. Portland crowds are notoriously loud at NBA games as well as WWE events and this one will blow the top off the Rose Garden! I can't freaking wait......

Oh ya, we are suppose to be talking about wrestling right?

Well......

LET'S GET IT ON!!!!!

Biggest News Of The Week:

Mitsuharu Misawa Dies At 46

Tragedy strikes Japan.....

Perhaps the most tragic event in the history of Japanese wrestling went down just a few days ago. After receiving a back suplex from Bison Smith during a tag team contest, Mitsuharu Misawa was left unconscious in the ring. The referee immediately stopped the match and a doctor who was in the audience started to perform CPR on Misawa. EMT's then arrived and proceeded to work on Misawa in front of the stunned crowd. He was then rushed to the hospital before being pronounced dead. Misawa's family was told the cause of death but decided to keep it confidential before having his body cremated. I can't explain how big of a tragedy this has to be for the Misawa family. Not only does he pass away, but he does so in front of his fans and basically the entire world. What was the actual cause of death? Did he have a heart attack much like Randy "The Ram" in the movie "The Wrestler"? Did he suffer some sort of horrible head injury after the suplex? Was it cervical spinal cord trauma like the rumors insist? Sometimes it's really hard to understand how these things can happen and why they happen to people like Misawa....

For those of you who have never heard of the guy, I can't even begin to explain how big of a legend Mitsuharu Misawa is in the world of pro wrestling, especially in Japan. Not only was he one of the most popular wrestlers to ever come out of Japan, but he was a 5-time All Japan Pro Wrestling Triple Crown champion, 3-time Global Honored Crown champ, and has even been named The Wrestling Observer's "Wrestler of the Year" on numerous occasions. When you think of Misawa's in ring work you can't help but remember his classics with Kenta Kobashi, Kuniaki Kobayashi, Toshiaki Kawada and a host of others. This is one of the biggest losses in professional wrestling and the fact that it happened in the ring is even more depressing.

Perhaps we should tribute the man the only way I know how.....

R.I.P. Mitsuharu Misawa.....gone but never forgotten!

Remember This Guy???

Xanta Claus

In the WWE world there is always a battle between good and evil...and no one is safe! Not even Santa Claus! Apparently Vince McMahon decided that the one thing missing from the magical world of professional wrestling was an evil version of Santa Claus aptly named....well, Xanta Claus. So the WWE decided to court Smoky Mountain Wrestling's Boo Bradley, and make him the evil version of the man everyone wishes actually existed.

Needless to say, it didn't last long....seriously. He came out, attacked Savio Vega, made like 4 more appearances in the WWE and then they axed the gimmick. I guess Vince needs to get better drugs seeing as his high didn't last all that long.

I did happen to track down a Xanta Claus match....so enjoy.....

(WATCH AT YOUR OWN RISK!)

Random News Bits:

- There is currently talk going around that Sting is leading towards retirement ONCE AGAIN. This happens every year when Sting's contract is up and every time Dixie Carter offers him a little more money to stick around. If Sting does decide to hang them up this time, the current plan is to run a retirement angle going in to Bound for Glory. I still think that ONE DAY we will see Sting in a WWE ring. It's just something I can't explain.....

- Frank Trigg was in talks with TNA about returning to the company recently. However, Trigg has recently signed with the UFC and the UFC doesn't allow their fighters to compete in pro wrestling. It's all good though. Trigg will probably lose 2 straight fights in the UFC and then decide to compete as a full-time wrestler. It's in the cards baby~!

- The WWE has announced that Umaga was released because he refused to go to rehab after failing a drug test. It was Umaga's second strike which would have netted him a nice little 60 day suspension. However, after refusing the WWE's rehab attempt, the company decided to let him go. This sucks on so many levels. Hopefully he gets his shit together and will return sooner rather than later.

- The rumors of Rey Mysterio quitting the WWE are false. Mysterio is unhappy with his pay as of late, but that's what happens when the economy sucks. Less people attend shows and buy PPV's, so wrestlers will tend to get less bonus money. SUCK IT UP BUDDY~!

- The current plan is to keep C.M. Punk a babyface, but if he gets heel reactions from the crowd during his feud with Jeff Hardy, the WWE will make him a full-time heel. OH PLEASE, PLEASE BOO HIM PEOPLE! I'm clamoring for some Punk heel action! Trust me guys, you won't be let down....

- Mick Foley has reportedly READ the comments left by the lovely readers of this site and has responded with this:

I've been reading some of the 411 comments

Yes, I have been reading some of the 411 comments, and really have found most of them to be very interesting. One of the people left the comment that I shouldn't judge every person who comments on the site based on the reactions of a few people. You know, that person is right, and in truth, I was probably guilty of doing just that. I know I'm just getting around to using a computer now, but I remember back when I was a huge fan, laying in wait for the new copy of "Wrestling Eye" to come out, just to get some "real" wrestling news. Even though I don't go on the wrestling sites very often, I will often ask JB what people on them are saying.

I probably wasn't clear enough when I asked for a little more information about the people on 411. Really, I wanted those handful of people making it clear they wouldn't be asking Santa for the new Mick Foley book to respond. But alot of people responded, and I did find the imformation to be very useful. I didn't look at every comment, as there were so many there, but I think just about anyone can see that the very critical comments TEND (note I said TEND) to be not as well thought out or as well written as the others.

As far as the new book goes, and whether or not four is at least one to many. Well, I guess if someone feels that way, it is. If they don't, it isn't. There was one really interesting comment about how the "Hardcore Diaries" seemed forced; that the diary format hid the fact that I didn't really have that much to talk about. I disagree - I really like the book, and am glad I wrote it. I doubt you will ever see a book that critical of the company written by someone still working for them. I don't want to kill any enthusiasm for the new book, but those looking for me to blast WWE will likely be dissapointed. My feelings for the company, and for Vince himself, are largely positive, even if I am very happy not to be there anymore.

Readers who thought I veered too far from wrestling in the last book will likey feel the same way about this one, though I'm thinking about adding a helpful "wrestleometer" at the start of every chapter, just in case they want to take a pass on one of my non-wrestling chapters. But looking back on "Hardcore Diaries", my favorite chapters are the ones dealing with kids I've met along the way. So that one guy who has heard enough stories about me helping younsters to last him a lifetime might want to skip this book completely.

As far as the one guy who referred to me as "whoring himself out" by writing another book? Well, let me see. I've got the Oxford American Dictionary here, and while they do have definitions for "whoring", "himself" and "out", the phrase as a whole leaves itself open for interpretation. But my personal interpretation would be along the lines of "doing something one isn't proud of or emotianally invested in simply for money". I have to say, I think that person's comment was a little off base here. I actually enjoy the writing process (at least most of the time) and have been proud of, and emotionally invested in everything I've ever written. Now I don't want to further put off the guy who doesn't need any more stories of me helping kids, but I have already pledged 50% of all my proceeds to charity. So, take away that 50%, deduct agents and managers fees, and state and federal income taxes, and there's not a real good chance of making a financial killing on this one.

Will this book, my fourth, be as absorbing as Brett Hart's autobiography? Probably not. Will it be as fun as Jericho's "A Lion's Tale", an incredible action-adventure coming of age story? I doubt it. But for people who like my style of telling stories, are interested in my ongoing adventures, and want a slightly differest perspective on the trials and tribulations of life inside the wonderful world of wrestling...you could do a whole lot worse.

BOOOurns~! I was hoping Foley was going to go off on some of you assclowns and help create some drama around here, but apparently he's taking the high road. Perhaps that's a road I should travel down some times?

- If you'd like to listen to an interesting interview with ROH's Sara Del Rey, then just click here.

- The WWE has apparently released Sim Snuka (no surprise there!) and Candice Michelle! Now, I will admit that I was not shocked by the release of Snuka, but the release of Michelle shocks the hell out of me. Why? Because she seemed to be making some progress in the ring but was so damn injury prone. Oh well, she always has "Go Daddy" and her tig-o-bitties to fall back on.....right?

Yaaaaaaa....I'll take two of those to go please.....

Wrestling Top 10 Lists:

Top 10 WWE Tag Teams of the 2000's

(There have been a lot of great tag teams in the WWE during the 2000's. Would you like to know who I consider my top 10 WWE tag teams of this decade? OF COURSE YOU DO! Before you read it, I feel I should fill you in on my voting criteria. I'm giving A LOT of points to teams who captured the WWE tag team title. Why? Because it's the top of the totem pole for every tag team. Also, I'm not factoring in ANYTHING any of these teams did outside of the WWE. And with that out of the way.....)

This list IS IN a particular order......

Honorable Mentions:

Too Cool - True story...back when the WWE ran the weekend shows like Jakked, Heat, & Shotgun, I believe I actually watched those shows more than the big ones. Why? Because of guys like Scott Taylor and Brian Christopher. Back when they wrestled as "Too Much" on these shows, I became a huge fan of these guys as a tag team, but it wasn't until they started acting like Eminem and dancing like fools alongside Rikishi that they became over with the mainstream WWE fans. Either way, who can forget the entertainment these two gave us for so many years?

Paul London & Brian Kendrick - London and Kendrick were two of the WWE's most talented high flyers, so it came as no surprise that the two made such an amazing tag team. It's too bad that the creative team didn't see the potential these two had that we all saw. VIVA LA PAUL LONDON~!

Booker T & Goldust - Booker T and Goldust were two successful singles wrestlers, so it should come as no surprise that the two managed to capture MUCH success as a tag team. The tag team of "Bookdust" became known for their comedic promos and entertaining matches. Sometimes I honestly do miss this team.....

The APA - Bradshaw and Faarooq could have potentially cracked the top 10 in this list had they been more active as wrestlers instead of spending their time playing cards, smoking cigars, and protecting people. Then again.....isn't that why we loved them?

La Resistance - I really wanted to put "La Resistance" in the top 10, however I just couldn't find a team to bump them for. That's life I suppose....

AND NOW.....THE TOP 10!!!

10) Billy & Chuck

YOUUUUUUU LOOOOKKKKKKKK SOOOOOOOO GOOD TO ME! Who didn't love them some Billy & Chuck? This was perhaps the only time I was a fan of Billy Gunn's just because these two cracked me up. Who can forget the crazy debacle that was the Billy & Chuck wedding complete with Rico screw job and Eric Bischoff in old man make-up? GREAT TIMES~!

9) Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch

There was once a time when the tag team of Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch RULED RAW. However, that was a time when RAW didn't have much of a tag team scene which could explain why these two captured the WWE world tag team titles on three separate occasions. Either way, these two found much success together and perhaps one day....we will see them together again.

8) The Brothers of Destruction

Kane and The Undertaker are scary as hell when they are by themselves, so imagine what happens when the WWE decides to throw the two "brothers" together in a tag team? That's right, the rest of the tag teams fall one by one. These two not only managed to capture plenty of singles titles throughout their careers, but they managed to capture a few tag teams titles together as well. Not bad for a pair of misfits from "Death Valley".

7) MNM

I remember when Melina, Nitro, and Mercury made their respective debuts in the WWE on the house show circuit and people were raving about their work. As a matter of fact, I remember when they made their WWE debut and seeing as I missed it...I decided to hunt it down on YouTube. That's how bad I wanted to see these two. It should come as no surprise that they managed to crack the top 10. Hell, if it wasn't for Mercury leaving the WWE, they might have even captured a top 5 spot. That's the way the cookie crumbles sometimes.

6) John Morrison & The Miz

This may be kind of high for the team of Morrison and The Miz, but these two were a big reason I made sure to tune into WWE programming the last few years. They were entertaining as hell, decent workers, and had good chemistry together. Hopefully their singles careers will pan out, otherwise we could see a reunion in the not-so-distant future?

5) Los Guerreros

Eddie and Chavo were amazing together. They had catchy entrance music, were good in the ring, and had excellent chemistry together. Not too mention there classics with the likes of the World's Greatest Tag Team and others. They lie, they cheat, they steal, they RULE~!

4) The World's Greatest Tag Team

I must admit, Shelton Benjamin has been my favorite WWE wrestler since he made his debut years ago. I saw his work in OVW and became an instant fan and ever since then I've been KING of the Shelton bandwagon! Needless to say, I was ecstatic when he made his WWE debut as a member of "Team Angle" alongside Charlie Haas. The two were followers of Kurt Angle's and were an instant success as a tag team. When they finally broke apart from Angle they changed their name to something that would only fit them....the World's Greatest Tag Team. The duo had some great years together before going their separate ways. But the good news is everything worked out for them...well....we shall see. The jury is still out.

3) The Hardy Boyz

Jeff and Matt Hardy were never suppose to get as over as they did. The two began their WWE career as jobbers, but due to their look and impressive high flying moves they became hugely popular amongst females and Jeff Small. The Hardy's had classic matches with Edge & Christian, The Dudley Boys, and more. There's no denying that Jeff and Matt surprised more than a few folks with the talent that they had. Hell, they are still both sitting close to the top of the WWE ladder as we speak! If you happen to track down a video of the Hardy's wrestling in the WWE before they officially got "over", then I dare you to tell me that you could have predicted the future that the Hardy's would have in the WWE. It's just not possible......

2) The Dudley Boys

D-VON....GET THE TABLES~!!!

Only in pro wrestling could someone tell someone else to grab a table and 20,000 people EXPLODE with approval. Well, that's exactly what happened when D-Von and Bubba Ray Dudley ran the WWE's tag team scene. After kicking ass in ECW for years, the Dudley's surprised a lot of fans when they signed with the WWE. How could the Dudley's succeed in the WWE with the amount of vulgarity they use? Well, somehow someway....they did. The Dudley's quickly became known for their "extreme" style and the fans ate it up. These two guys go together like peanut butter and jelly. We all saw what happened when the WWE decided to split them up. The end result was not pretty. Either way, the Dudley's ended up capturing 9 WWE tag team titles overall. That's not bad for a team that people predicted would bomb in the big show.

1) Edge & Christian

OF COURSE Edge & Christian are #1 on this list! E & C defined "awesomeness" during their run in the WWE. Hell, look at them now! They are still sitting on top of the WWE's roster. If you were one of the few unlucky bastards who missed E & C's run in the WWE...I feel extremely sorry for you. You missed all the great stuff these two brought to us every week, and I'm just talking about their promos! Not only were they entertaining as hell outside of the ring, but inside the ring, they were just as dominating. The two managed to capture the WWE world tag team titles on 7 occasions and had some classic triple threat ladder matches with the likes of the Dudleys and the Hardy's. Man, I would kill for an "E & C" DVD.....

Until then, enjoy this....

I know these lists are subjective, and many of these teams were no doubt great, but I would have like to have seen the 2001 team of Benoit an Jericho, when they fueded against the Two-Man Power Trip of Austin and Triple H. Benoit and Jericho were getting huge pops. and the fans were clamoring for one or both of them to break out as main event title contenders. Their performance at the "Forgotten" TLC III on SmackDown was some of the best free television ever witnessed in the wrestling world.

I would have liked to have seen an honorable mention to the efforts of the SmackDown Six tag team fueds of the early 2000s. Every man went on to be some form of heavyweight champion. Impressive.

How many people you think will bitch about the top 10 WWE tag teams list not having people like the Steiners/AMW/Beer Money on it?

I can see some asshole already put a list on there and it had the Midnight Express who I believe weren't even wrestling as a tag team in the 2000's ahh retards, they make the world go round dont they?

jericho/christian, beer money, benoit/jericho, benoit/angle really deserve the spot more than lance cade and the other guy

Eerrr Banz, Steiner Brothers havent really done anything this decade - they had a brief pairing in tna that was cut short due to injury so never actually got their big match lol.

"Hopefully their singles careers will pan out, otherwise we could see a reunion in the not-so-distant future?"
Their careers will... both are awesome, but poor ol' Miz faces a bigger challenge with all the Raw Egos.

If you were one of the few unlucky bastards who missed E & C's run in the WWE...I feel extremely sorry for you."

Thank you... I pretty much missed the entire Attitude Era thanks to my apartment building not being wired up for cable tv and Australia's horrificly slow adoption of wrestling on TV. Thank god for Youtube!

Billy and Chuck? Seriously?

Posted By: dogpound7382 (Guest)  on June 20, 2009 at 09:50 AM

Silly Dustin James... The Hardys didn't just get over with the crowd, they also got over in the back for working their asses off in the ring during their jobber days.

What part of the best team of this decade did Banz not understand?

Posted By: Goob (Guest)  on June 20, 2009 at 11:29 AM

He said of the 2000s. I don't remember a lot of Steiner matches in the last 10 years.

Posted By: Eric (Guest)  on June 20, 2009 at 11:33 AM

1)Edge and Christian (The whole package, innovative and dominant in wwf's most fun era)

2)Hardyz (Highly innovative.. there rivalry with E and C was amazing)

3)Miz and Morrison (The E & C of later part of the decade, amazing all rounders and carried all three shows in general last year, could of been second or even top if they had anyone useful to feud with)

4)Team Angle (Just a perfect fit with two awesome wrestlers... WGTT would just great to watch with a cool gimmick)

5)Los Guerreros (Lie, Cheat and Steal was sooo fun and launched Eddie to another level)

6)Brothers of Destruction (I'm a sucker for two scary dudes beating thew holy crap out of everyone)

7)Dudleys (They were part of the holy trilogy of TLC's and were part of the hottest rivalry in tag team history, but after 2001 they were sooooooooooooo stale I couldn't bear the watch them afterwards)

8)Kendrick/London (Like the Rockers, shame they were never allowed to evolve they could of been really special)

9)APA (Same as Taker/Kane... badass plus I loved the APA office segments)

10)3 Min Warning (Great gimmick again two fat Samoans beating the crap out of people is fun to watch)

Jericho/Benoit don't count as a proper tag team same for Benoit/Angle.

Just because somebody spends 90% of their career on the injured list due to multiple injuries, does not mean they're "injury prone"!!!

The Midnight Express should be NUMBER ONE!!!! And then The ROCKERS!!! They are my favorite!!! DURRRRRRR!

Wow, you left off Angle/Benoit. What for? Are you still blackballing Benoit for because of the murder/suicide? Looks like it to me. The "Truth" is, him and Angle kicked ass and had great matches as a team, other then teams like: Too Cool, Cade&Murdoch, La Resistance, Billy&Chuck, and Goldust&Booker T. You look like a mark and I sound like a smark/smart, but the "Truth" is, Benoit&Angle rocked and you know it. Do this article justice and change it or just stop writing. The "Truth" hurts and you know it.

No offense but the two man power trip of Austin and HHH should of at least made the honerable mention. I really don't think any other team held all the major titles between two people ever.

An E & C DVD would be awesome! Have them talk you through it like Edge does on his DVD, all the jokes and stories would be gold, it would be one of the highest selling WWE DVD'S!

I like the list but this is my top 10

01. Edge & Christian
02. Kurt Angle & Chris Benoit
03. Self Proclaimed World's Greatest Tag Team
04. The Steiner Brothers
05. Hardy Boyz
06. Los Guerreros
07. Beer Money Inc.
08. AJ Styles & Christopher Daniels
09. Motor City Machine Guns
10. Latin American Exchange

Some of you mentioning the Two-Man Power Trip .... as great as that tag team was, they lasted all of about 2 months before HHH tore his quad. Too bad, for a number of reasons.

Dustin, I think it's a great list, only I wouldn't have ranked the Dudley boys so high. After the Dudleys/Hardys/EC feud ended, the Dudleys failed to stay interesting. You're dead on about nobody being able to predict the Hardy's success. Some people mused about it, but no one seriously thought it would happen.

It's a shame The Rock and Mankind teamed in late 1999 and not this decade, otherwise they'd be well up on that list. 3 Tag titles and the highest-rated segment on Raw EVER says it all.
