The Piledriver Report 07.22.09: Night of Champions: Let the Good Hype Begin
Posted by Ronny Sarnecky on 07.22.2009
This coming Sunday, the WWE will be airing the Night of Champions pay per view. Unfortunately, the build up to the pay per view is more like a Night of Chumpions. This week’s Piledriver Report examines the reasons behind the poor build-up.
This Sunday, the WWE presents the Night of Champions pay per view where every match is a title match. Ever since WrestleMania XXV on April 5th, the WWE has been churning out pay per view events just about every three weeks. The night after the pay per view, as well as the rest of the week, the WWE usually recaps the previous pay per view event. They deliver the fall out from the pay per view. Realistically, that would give the WWE one week to set up the card, and an additional two weeks to hype the event. However, that is not the WWE way.
The WWE has been accustomed to announcing matches every week leading up to a pay per view, with the exception of the final week. They usually use the final week before the pay per view as the hype machine for the event. This strategy of building a pay per view hasn't been working. In my opinion, the WWE is treating their pay per views as an after thought. It's like they are telling the fans that their weekly shows are what you have to watch. Then they expect you to buy the monthly pay per view just because the show has the words "World Wrestling Entertainment" listed on the top of the marquee.
SMACKDOWNHASMESOLD
This has never been more apparent then watching the build up for Night of Champions. Let me rephrase that, it has never been more apparent on the RAW side of things. SmackDown! has been doing a nice job of building up hype for their matches on the show. For the past few weeks, Jeff Hardy and CM Punk have been delivering awesome promos leading up to their return pay per view encounter. Despite not "officially" being named a heel wrestler, CM Punk is doing a tremendous job with his slow turn. From the "eye injury" and showing the crowd his eye drops, to criticizing Jeff Hardy for being proud of being drug free for one year, Punk is playing the role of an old school classic heel wrestler. The old school heels were awesome, because they had a valid reason for doing what they were doing. A reason that whether or not you agreed with his actions, at least you knew that his character truly believed in what nefarious actions he was committing. That's what Punk is doing today.
RAWISBORE
On the RAW side of things, the WWE is continuing its streak of staleness. At the last pay per view, the WWE featured a WrestleMania XXV rematch between Randy Orton and Triple H. On the July 6th RAW, the WWE presented a number one contender's match that was a rematch of WrestleMania 22 between John Cena and Triple H. This weekend, the WWE will feature a repeat of the RAW main event from WrestleMania XXIV between Randy Orton, John Cena, and Triple H. Notice the trend here? Not only is the WWE repeating WrestleMania matches, but also these three matches involve at least 2 of the same 3 wrestlers (Triple H, John Cena, and Randy Orton).
If repeating these previous main events isn't bad enough, to hype up the pay per view, the WWE gave us similar matches on RAW. Two weeks ago, they gave us a RAW main event that featured Randy Orton, Ted DiBiase, Jr., and Cody Rhodes against John Cena, Triple H, and Seth Green. This past Monday night, we saw Randy Orton, Ted DiBiase, Jr., and Cody Rhodes go up against John Cena and Triple H. The only performer, and I use that term loosely, that is missing is Seth Green.
THEPROMOOFDOOM
The stale match-ups to build up RAW's main event isn't the only thing hurting the RAW side of the Night of Champions show. The in-ring promo with Triple H and John Cena on Randy Orton was absolutely horrible. Could they make John Cena look any more like a bigger geek? It's bad enough that the male adult fan can't stand Cena, but now they are turning him into a nerd. Yeah, the kiddies will really get behind a geek. Seeing Cena pleading with Triple H that Seth Green is a hobbit, made him look pathetic. It was made worse when Cena gave a fist pump once Triple H finally agreed with him.
That wasn't the only thing about this promo that killed their upcoming pay per view match. The line that took the cake, and had to be the funniest line of the year was when Triple H proclaimed that he doesn't even care about winning the World title anymore. Well, if that's the case, why should we even bother to order the pay per view? If one of the competitors in the match for the company's biggest title doesn't even care if he wins it, then why should the fans give a damn about the title?
John Cena also got in on the Pinocchio act by saying that the fans will witness one of the greatest matches of all-time! Yeah, because the three put on a wrestling clinic at WrestleMania XXIV. To make matters worse, he then reminded the fans that they have already seen this stale match LAST YEAR!!! That's not the way you want to sell a pay per view on your go home RAW before the show.
THEGUESTHOST
Despite the poor job on Monday night by the WWE in hyping the WWE World title match, that isn't even the biggest obstacle in the pay per view build by the WWE's flagship program. The main culprit has to be the edition of the "Special Guest Host" to RAW. It seemed like the WW spent more time plugging these "guests" then they did on plugging the pay per view. Did Seth Green really need to be featured in RAW's main event, as well as its opening 15 minute promo to start the show?
This past Monday night, we got several backstage skits of ZZ-Top playing some of their old songs. ZZ-Top? Really WWE? Does anyone under the age of 30 years old know more then 3 ZZ-Top songs? When Legacy did their backstage segment last week, where it was brought up that Dusty Rhodes may be the Guest Host, I thought that would be good. I'm not a Dusty fan, but he knows how to sell an angle/match/show. Then they tell us it would be ZZ Top! Major UGH! So far, Ted DiBiase was the best host. They should just try to convince him to be the RAW GM. He was awesome.
Not to bash the entire pay per view build up, as I said the Hardy/Punk match has been built up very well. Anything that Jericho touches turns to gold, and he role as the healthy half of the unified World Tag Team Champions has been great. I don't even know who his partner will be, and he definitely sold me on being interested in the title match. On the RAW side, they have done a really nice job of building up the Divas title match between Mickie James and Maryse.
Despite the awful build up for the top match on the RAW side, I will still order the pay per view. The SmackDown! side has sold me on this one. It's times like these that the WWE should be thankful for the brand split. Otherwise, if I were seeing the Orton/Cena/Triple H build up on all three shows, I probably would have passed. Since I am going to order the show, it is obvious to me who the true champions are leading up to the Night of Champions. That would be the performers, and creative staff of SmackDown! No surprise there.
I agree - SD has had the better build .
RAW Has not been great for some time now .
However , we are in a PG Era , John Cena & HHH appeal primarily to kids , as does Jeff Hardy . I do not see RAW changing anytime soon .
The IWC Needs to watch SD and be
happy.
Why will they change anything on RAW ?
RAW Ratings - 3.6 Range .
SD - 1.7 .
SD Has half the viewership . You can blame the network , the day of broadcast and several other excuses , but it's a fact - Casual fans prefer RAW , with its skits , its funny segments and its guest hosts .
SD Has quality wrestling , which not all casuals care about .
That is the way it is and will be for the rest of the PG era .

What a long thought out article >.> Raw Is Bore and Praising smackdown, the usual wrestling columns of late.
Smackdown is a great show, I'm a fan of wrestling in general so I watch all wrestling shows including TNA but newsflash, not all of us think Smackdown is the show to watch, I'm still a fan of raw and hopefully a lot of you can respect that just like I respect your opinions that Smackdown is the show to beat.

TNA? Where Old men hold the gold, Original and young talent get buried, Jeff Jarrett fucks your (ex) wife and nothing makes sence TNA?

Smackdown's ratings are lower for three reasons:
1. Friday nights are second only to Saturday nights for lowest overall viewership.
2. MyNetwork TV is on fewer cable company lineups.
3. Monday Night Wrestling is a tradition. Put Smackdown on Monday nights - and in 3 months it will be at or above Raw's numbers.
I know the word being used to describe Raw right now is "STALE". Stale wrestling, stale wrestlers, stale fueds and frankly stale announcing. Jim Ross - love him or hate him - could sell. He could fill in the gaps in the promos to help sell a PPV event. Imagine him during and Lawler during the opening promo. JR could say something about him loving those movies and take some of the geek heat off Cena. Or he could have piped in about not believing that HHH does not care about the title. And we would have believed him (at least a little bit more than the nothingness that is Michael Cole).
As always - if I remember Sunday night, I'll pull up one of the live feeds and watch in on my computer while hopefully going deep in an on-line poker tourney. But the WWE has given me no reason to set myself a reminder to watch.

I'm not even a Cena fan but I've been wondering myself what was up with that opening promo on Monday night with HHH and Cena where HHH nade Cena look like a total moron for no reason.

Don't know about you (or well, I do, because you're a generic IWC douche) but I thought the crowd during RAW pretty much dug Cena's whole nerdy routine.
He pretty much just played the Shawn Michaels role; of course, generic IWC douches haven't been programmed to despise Michaels, so it's okay when he acts the fool.

Ronny, Ronny, Ronny, have you no common sense? Triple selling the idea that he doesn't care about winning the WWE Title was done to show how much he wants to get his hands on Randy Orton and tear him limb for limb. Now had he been champion and said that, well that would be odd, but it coulda still have the same effect.
If you were paying attention to Raw you would have remembered the locker room interaction between Cena and Triple H where Cena asked Triple H if he really meant what he said at the begining of the show, to which Triple Hatche said he didn't and explained he said that to psyche out "The Viper".
Not you're fault man, you are no genius, not all of us can be. Except for me that is.

Thanks for pointing out how ridiculous HHH saying he doesn't even care about winning the WWE title anymore, because that might be one of the most laughable things I've ever heard on a Go-Home Episode. You don't say things like that trying to sell a PPV. Not only that, but it's HHH that said it. There aren't a whole lot of people that want to see him with the title anyway. Just let Orton retain and drop it to Mark Henry next month at Summerslam.

Not that anyone asked me to, but I'm gonna throw in my 2 cents about the huge difference in ratings.
I watch RAW each week live because it's live. Like many others, I read the spoilers for Smackdown on a wednesday morning and miss out on the friday night show. Mainly as it's on a friday night, and like most single men in their early twenties, Friday's the night I try (and usually fail) to get some strange (drunken sex with female strangers for those who wondered) and thus I miss smackdown. I catch a repeat on wwe.com as it's much easier to type in wwe.com then click a link rather than waita couple of days for the tv to show it again. In short, wwe would have better smackdown ratings if they moved the show to a thursday and moved superstars to a friday (because i dont really care about superstars) and actually aired it live as opposed to pre-taping it in front of thousands of people who can easliy type the results up lol. They also need to stop showing the whole show on their website to increase their main ratings.
So there you go, but I must say - even tho i have just suggested them taking it off wwe.com , I hope they dont as I likes me some strange lol

Ronny, I have to agree with Mil Mascaras about the "hobbit" promo. Out of all the things to go on a rant about, this is what you pick? I'm not sure if you noticed, but that whole bit went over well with the live crowd and probably a good portion of the tv viewers. As far as Cena looking like a geek goes, considering how popular Lost, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, Star Wars, comic book movies, etc. have been, being a geek or into geeky things has been, for a lack of a better term, chic.

Here are my feelings about the matches and some predictions on who might win at Night of Champions.
Randy Orton (c) vs. Triple H vs. John Cena Triple Threat match for the WWE Championship: Should be alright in all honesty Cena is only in this match to make sure he is on the card plus keep the Orton/HHH feud going till SummerSlam. I think Cena should win this match but Orton will most likely win.
Maryse (c) vs. Mickie James WWE Divas Championship: Good job will the build. James becomes the champion.
CM Punk (c) vs. Jeff Hardy World Heavyweight Championship: Should be a good match. Punk wins by cheating.
Chris Jericho and TBA (c) vs. The Legacy (Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase) Unified WWE Tag Team Championship: This match depends entirely on who is Jericho's partner.
Tommy Dreamer (c) vs. Christian ECW Championship: Should be nice for Dreamer being in Philly.
Rey Mysterio (c) vs. Dolph Ziggler WWE Intercontinental Championship: Do not understand why Ziggler is facing Rey and not Morrison. Mysterio wins.
Kofi Kingston (c) vs. Montel Vontavious Porter vs. The Miz vs. Carlito vs. Jack Swagger vs. The Big Show WWE United States Championship: Why isn't Bourne in this match?

One other reason for the low SD ratings has been that it is already on youtube. Considering that it is pre-taped, people are already able to see it and post it on the site. Make the show live and you will have more viewers.

The danger is that with poor build ups to pay per views, the RAW viewers may see little reason to order. RAW gets the ratings, but without the encouragement and sell, they become inefficient in getting the PPV $$$.
This is a poor business model. The costs of a PPV are the same, regardless. The shows are the primary advertising medium. WWE uses their own time to push PPVs while encouraging viewers to tune in next week. This is time that is certain to draw people with an interest in wrestling - which radio, billboard, and other TV ads do not.
A poor sell takes away time from matches, skits, and advertising of other WWE products while making potential PPV buyers disinterested.
The article is not about Smackdown's content being better than RAW, as JcJames would have it. It is about how poorly the primary angle for RAW has not done a good job of getting people to buy Night of Champions. Because if anybody is buying for the Divas belt - or the IC belt - I would be very suprised.
