411Mania's Squared Circle News Report 08.01.09
Posted by Dustin James on 08.01.2009
411's Dustin James is back to discuss the latest talent releases from TNA & WWE, Chris Jericho's ongoing "Twitter" wars, the tragedy that was The "New" Rockers, the top 10 pro athletes that need to guest host RAW and much much more......
Welcome back inside the Squared Circle! How is everyone doing this week? Myself? Well, I have had one of the worst weeks ever! It just so happens that my real life job is an outdoors job and it ALSO just so happens that this week was the hottest week on record in Portland since I've been alive on this thing we call Earth. I can't even begin to tell you how miserable it is to work outside while it's 107 degrees. I feel sorry for anyone who has to put up with his kind of heat on a consistent basis. While it's nice to go on vacation and enjoy this kind of heat in a wonderful place like Las Vegas...it happens to make me miserable when it WON'T GO AWAY! Seriously, when the coldest it gets at night is 78 degrees, how are you suppose to sleep?
Basically...lack of sleep + lots of heat = makes me moody.
Don't say I didn't warn ya......
LET'S GET IT ON!!!!!
Biggest News Of The Week:
WWE & TNA Thin Their Numbers......
"YOU'RE FIRED!!!!"
Usually when WWE does a surprise release like THE Brian Kendrick's...there are more on the way. The WWE is notoriously known for releasing people in numbers. I think I remember one time where they released like over 10 guys in less than a week's time! I truly believe that Vince McMahon has every single wrestler's face on his wall and he just throws a dart at it to decide who to release sometimes (except HHH....he has a wallet size photo up on the wall). However, is TNA getting in to the game as well? In "somewhat" shocking news, TNA released long-time employee Dutch Mantell and Savio Vega on Friday. Mantel's release is very shocking because he's good buddies with Jeff Jarrett and this could be a sign that Jarrett's losing power in TNA. Dutch had been a member of TNA's creative team for some time now and it was actually pretty big news when TNA signed Mantell years ago. I distinctively remember people blowing their wads all over because Mantell was coming to TNA's creative team. Now, the man is gone and looking for a new job. Is this truly a sign that Jarrett's losing power in TNA or is TNA going into "trimming the fat" mode as well?
So, let's assume that TNA and WWE are going into "trimming the fat" mode and let's take a quick look at who really should go from each set of rosters. Why am I doing this? Because it's a slow news week (not in MMA!) and I need something to discuss......
WWE: RAW
Carlito: I was always a huge fan of Carlito's, but the man is just not ever going to go anywhere in the WWE. His gimmick was really awesome at one time, but now he either needs to improve upon it or get a major overhaul because as of right now....it's not working for me.
Festus: Much like Carlito, they either need to get this man a new gimmick or let him go. I just don't get his character at all.
Hornswoggle: While Hornswoggle is good for comedy relief for some people (aka the uneducated), I either feel like turning the channel or punching my girlfriend whenever he's on TV. Remember kids, domestic violence is only funny when it happens during RAW.
Chavo Guerrero: How is this man still employed? Is he the new Bob Holly? Seriously, I have never really been a fan of Chavo's but does he only have a job because he's related to Eddie? If so, that's cool and all.....but can we keep him off TV?
WWE: Smackdown
Charlie Haas: Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Charlie Haas but he hasn't really done much in the WWE outside of a tag team. Perhaps Haas is like Arn Anderson.....much better in a tag team. Give this man a partner or just let him go elsewhere.
Mike Knox: I've never been a fan of Mike Knox's. I just don't get the "big scary dudes" fascination that Vince McMahon has, but hopefully once he hands the company over to Stephanie, she doesn't hire guys like Knox. They should be working at carnivals and high schools....not in the WWE.
Curt Hawkins: WHO?!?! Exactly......
WWE: ECW
I honestly don't watch ECW so I wouldn't know who to release. But looking at their current roster I can honestly say I wouldn't cry if they decided to release Vladimir Kozlov. Honestly....I wouldn't.....
TNA
BG James: Isn't it about time to call it quits with ol "Road Dogg"? Who is James banging around that place in order to have kept his job for so damn long? Don West? Either way, let's say goodbye to this guy already.
Kip James: Speaking of guys they should quit on....it doesn't get any worse than Billy Gunn. While I use to be a fan of Gunn's (the 90's were a very different time), everyone's over him now. Perhaps he could make up with Vince and go back to the WWE....but only if he used that old "Ass Man" song. That shit was tight!
I really could put A LOT more TNA "talent" on this list but I found it kind of funny if I kept it just the New Age Outlaws. In all seriousness, why are these guys still wrestling for TNA? Are they MAJOR draws or something? Either way, I don't get it.
In the end, if the WWE and TNA do decide to clean house they probably won't release anyone on my lists. Instead they will release someone I actually like....such as Christian, Samoa Joe, Chris Jericho, AJ Styles or CM Punk. It's just how the stars line up sometimes. Will we see anyone besides Mantell, Kendrick, and Vega released or not? Only time will tell.....
Remember This Guy???
The "New" Rockers
In wrestling, there is an old saying. Anything "new" is probably going to suck. In most (all?) cases it's very true. The WWE has proved that time and time again with flops such as The "New" Blackjacks and The "New" Midnight Express. However, none of them were as bad as The "New" Rockers. Apparently, Vince McMahon decided that the tag teams he had in the WWE at the time sucked major balls (and trust me...they did) and he decided to pair Marty Jannetty up with a new partner to reform a new version of Jannetty's popular tag team with Shawn Michaels. This partner wasn't just any partner though. It was AL F'N SNOW! Errrmmmm, excuse me. It was LEIF F'N CASSIDY! You see, the WWE didn't think Al Snow would get over just being Al Snow. No, no no. They had him use tons of gimmicks (Shinobi & Avatar anyone?) before finally giving him a spot alongside Jannetty in one of the shittitest tag teams to ever grace this planet.
The sad thing is....Jannetty and Snow probably would have made a decent tag team had they just been given a new name and gimmick. But noooooo, that NEVER would have worked!
Hey look....it's The "New" Rockers vs. The Hardy Boys, before The Hardy Boys were "The Hardy Boyz"......
Random News Bits:
- As always, I'm your weekly headquarters for the ongoing Chris Jericho vs "The Miz" feud on "Twitter". Let's see what kind of silliness these two were able to get into this week:

Man, I love these guys. Let's hope this "Twitter feud" goes on forever!
- In ANOTHER "Twitter/Jericho" related feud, it seems that Jericho got into it a little bit with JTG of "Cryme Tyme" as well......
JTG: @IAmJericho hey jericho .....your days are numberd.
Jericho: @Jtg1284 why am I joining crime Tyme? That's a sure fire career killer...
JTG: @IAmJericho hey how's it going christina.

JTG: I'm sorry everyone I'm back, I was in the bathroom taking a Y2J
JTG: Getting my cardio in....getting ready for summer slam....ya digg !
Jericho: @Jtg1284 in that case, u better take some wrestling lessons too...
Chris Jericho + Twitter = the greatest thing ever!
- Speaking of wrestlers STILL feuding behind the scenes. WWE legends Ric Flair and Bret "The Hitman" Hart continued their little ongoing feud this week while appearing on Live Audio Wrestling (at separate times of course). Here's what the "NATURE BOY" had to say about Hart (I post this only because it's awesome!).....
"He is a pissant in the history of wrestling. He has the nerve to compare himself to me. Let's get realistic. If you put Bret Hart in your left hand and me in your right hand, compare the careers. Who is he? I wrestled everybody in the business, for an hour each night, Harley Race, Dory Funk, Jack and Jerry Brisco. Who is Bret Hart? He is a legend in his own mind. He lives in his own little world. He screws his own family around. Who is Bret Hart? In my world, he is a nobody. He never wrestled [Bruiser] Brody, he never wrestled [Stan] Hansen. He never wrestled Harley Race. He never wrestled in St. Louis. I don't think much of him at all. He was a mid-card performer until he was 40 years old."
- TNA has officially signed Elijah Burke and he is expected to debut with the company soon. Expect him to debut with a whole new gimmick and name which probably won't get over and he will get blamed for it and then released. At least that's what happens in the WWE!
- James Laurinaitis, son of Road Warrior Animal, signed with the St. Louis Rams recently. The Rams drafted him in the second round of the NFL Draft. Laurinaitis was never expected to wrestle, but if he's a bust in the NFL (I don't think he will be) I'd expect to see the guy following in the footsteps of his daddy and uncle Johnny Ace.
- Remember a few weeks back when I mentioned that Mick Foley was going to be doing stand-up comedy at the Hollywood Improv on August 22? Well, Colt Cabana is apparently ALSO going to be performing a stand-up act of his own on the same stage. My need to get this tape just increased significantly. SOMEONE needs to attend this thing and YouTube it......
- Vince McMahon is reportedly very "on edge" due to the fact that Edge and Matt Hardy both recently suffered injuries and Jeff Hardy is leaving the company soon. The WWE is concerned with the recent lack of depth in the main event scene. Apparently some people are ticked off because MVP and Jack Swagger were suppose to have been brought over to RAW for some big-time pushes which they haven't been receiving for some reason. This is what happens when you get to be McMahon's age. It catches up with you and you start getting paranoid. Relax Vince! It's not like you are in control of who gets into the "main event scene" or anything.....
- Truth Martini (head of the House of Truth wrestling school in Detroit) recently appeared on the "Hit The Ropes" radio show. During the interview he discusses training Alex Shelley, Jimmy Jacobs and Zach Gowen. He also discusses a road trip that involves Shelley going through the back window of a car. You can listen to the entire interview here.

Wrestling Top 10 Lists:
Top 10 Athletes I Want To See Guest Host RAW
Let's face it, Shaquille O'Neal's guest host appearance on RAW this past Monday was pretty freakin sweet. Like him or hate him (I use to hate him when he played for the Lakers, but now the man is pure comedy gold) Shaq brings the goods wherever he goes. This gave me the idea....what athletes that are currently playing in their respective sport would I like to see guest host RAW? Before you view the list I must inform you that I'm a huge NFL, NBA, and MMA fan, so don't be surprised if this is full of guys from those sports. Nothing against the other sports, it's just this is MY list, that's one of the perks of writing this damn thing!
This list IS IN a particular order......
Honorable Mentions:
Mike Tyson
Mike Tyson hosting a RAW would be a thing of epic proportions. Not only would we get to see Tyson interact with some of the WWE's finest, but I'm sure we would get one of those "WWE moments" like we got the last time Tyson was involved with the WWE. Remember Tyson doing the crotch-chop? He was officially the worst ever at pulling off that move. Either way, I would kill for John Cena to confront a heelish Tyson. That would be awesome sauce....
AND NOW....THE TOP 10!
10) Brandon Roy
Brandon Roy is probably one of the nicest guys currently playing in the NBA and to be honest with you....he would probably be a rather boring host of RAW. But let's face it, this is my list, and I have a man-crush on Roy....so he makes the list~! Now, just lead the Blazers to an NBA title within the next 5 years. PLEASE!
9) Jeremy Shockey
Let's face it, Jeremy Shockey is a notorious asshole. It's been pretty well documented. However, this guy would make a perfect heel guest host. People would most likely boo this guy out of the building the moment his personality came out. Of course, this all relies on the WWE actually letting his true personality come out and we all know that doesn't happen nowadays.
8) Kobe Bryant
Shaq did it and we all know that Kobe must one-up Shaq at everything! Kobe should not only come on RAW and guest host the show, but he should change the title of the show to "Monday Night Kobe", have a "Kobejack match" (where all the lumberjacks must wear a Bryant jersey), and then force himself on Stephanie McMahon. Oops....that last one was a little uncalled for. Ahh screw it....it's Kobe!
7) Stephon Marbury
Had I done this list a week ago, Stephon Marbury would be nowhere on it. However, after viewing his "Streamin Stephon" YouTube videos....I'm pretty sure the dude has lost his freakin mind. At one time, Marbury was a pretty damn good NBA player, however his skills declined over time and he had a pretty crappy attitude. But if you release YouTube videos of yourself where you constantly scream at the camera, end up crying during a prayer, and actually EAT Vaseline...then something is mentally wrong with you. Marbury will probably never play in the NBA again, but I'm sure he'd make a pretty entertaining guest host on RAW.
Watch the man lose his mind......
6) Terrell Owens
Terrell Owens is one of the most hated players in the NFL and I believe I have already more than expressed my interest in seeing a HEEL guest host. Owens would make a perfect one! He could come out and slam the WWE babyfaces and basically put them through a night of punishment. That would make for some damn good TV and I bet Owens would be full of creative ways to screw the wrestlers. He'd probably even force Chris Masters to feed him grapes during the whole show.
5) Chad Johnson
"Ocho Cinco" is one of the most entertaining athletes currently out there. Even if you hate the man, you can't deny he's entertaining as hell. I'm sure a Johnson appearance on RAW would get plenty of air time on ESPN seeing as anything he does ends up on ESPN. Hell, the man's TWEETS end up on freakin ESPN!! Book this man ASAP Vince!
4) Quinton "Rampage" Jackson
Quinton "Rampage" Jackson was born for professional wrestling. However, the man happens to be one of the best MMA fighters in the world. If you have never seen "Rampage" pull a promo on someone, then you haven't lived a complete life yet. Jackson would be MONEY on the mic in the WWE and would probably even get involved in the action. Imagine a guest host on RAW who actually punts Randy Orton in the head....trust me when I say that Jackson is the perfect man for the job.
3) Michael Vick
Due to his whole recent dog fighting scandal, Michael Vick happens to be one of the most hated men on the planet. How could you NOT want to see this man host RAW? I can literally close my eyes and hear the boos just ring down on him. It would be one of the greatest things to ever happen on RAW and would be a ratings BONANZA! Especially if the WWE were able to land Vick before an NFL team did. That would be huge.......
2) Ron Artest
Ron Artest (who currently holds the record as the "funniest man on Twitter") would make for an amazing guest host. Not only would he be money on the mic, but there's always the chance that Artest is going to get nailed with something by a crowd member and he will then beat up 34% of the audience. If Artest did jump an audience member and the crowd panned back to Vince's face.....it would make for one of the greatest moments of my life. Artest + WWE = NEEDS TO HAPPEN!
1) Brock Lesnar
Ya, ya, ya....I know the chances of this happening are slim to none but can you imagine if it did go down? Imagine if Brock Lesnar and Vince McMahon somehow made peace. Imagine UFC President Dana White allowing his fighters to appear on WWE programming (at least in a guest host role). Now, imagine Brock Lesnar's old WWE music hitting and Lesnar coming out as the special guest host of RAW. The only thing that would top that would be if he were accompanied by Bret Hart, Randy Savage, and The Ultimate Warrior. Brock as a guest host of RAW has to happen!

Stephon Marbury eats Vaseline.....

If WWE didn't have the TV-PG era in full swing, I'd back Tyson on RAW.
Just to hear him talk shit about the RAW locker room in his trademark voice would be gold.

It's been a while, but Brock Lesnar hosting Raw = Too awesome to ever come true.
Posted By: The Phenomonal RJ Styles (Guest) on August 01, 2009 at 01:06 AM
Why isn't THE ROCK on your list of athletes?
Well... ex-athletes anyway.
Posted By: Guest#9545 (Guest) on August 01, 2009 at 01:17 AM
Road Dogg isn't actually wrestling for TNA. He's an agent now. I believe Billy Gunn is too, with the occasional match, such as when Kong killed him dead a while back.
Posted By: Guest#6184 (Guest) on August 01, 2009 at 02:15 AM
I agree with your list of firings except for Chavo and Haas.
Chavo might need to go off TV, but I think he would make a great road agent or trainer for divas and young guys. Since they are never going to really push Benjamin, they should just reunite The Worlds Greatest Tag Team and set the tag division on fire.
Posted By: Guest#4007 (Guest) on August 01, 2009 at 02:36 AM
Thank god I started follow Jericho on Twitter lol.
Posted By: Forrest (Guest) on August 01, 2009 at 02:45 AM
"but now the man is pure comedy gold"
and you call fans of midget comedy retarded?
maybe it appeals to kids, you know, wrestling fans who will actually bug their parents until they buy tickets to the PPVs and merchandises.
Oy perhaps you would like Vince to cater to people who download his shows for free and then critique it without an ounce of actual real time business or wrestling experience.
Sheesh.

Damnit that picture of the dog chasing Vick is really funny.

I hope there's a special secluded place in hell for you. Comparing Charlie Haas to Arn Anderson. Charlie Haas isn't good enough to lace Arn Anderson's boots.
Posted By: Darren Runne (Guest) on August 01, 2009 at 04:17 AM
Rampage definitely wouldn't fit the pg image...or even pg-13 for that matter.
Posted By: Sbre zeke (Guest) on August 01, 2009 at 04:50 AM
I'd like to see Dennis Rodman host Raw. Not that I think he'd be any good or anything, but he'd be interesting to watch in a car-crash WCW 2000 capacity.
Posted By: Michael L (Guest) on August 01, 2009 at 08:41 AM
OMG what are the Hardys wearing?
Posted By: Bill (Guest) on August 01, 2009 at 09:13 AM
Ric Flair...what a piece of shit. You know, he IS one of the greatest wrestlers of all time (you could the greatest, but definately in the top 4). However, I laugh my ass off when he declares Bret Hart a pissant. Is Flair upset that he spent the majority of his career wrestling in the minor leagues? Is he upset that Hart was WAY better than the majority of people he wrestled? I love how the IWC is full of revisionists and little kids who only think Ric Flair is the greatest because they watched him in the WWE and were told he was the greatest. I guarantee you can search for 50 great Ric Flair matches and then match them with 50 great Bret Hart matches. The only difference is Bret had to retire due to injury while Flair, MIchaels and Triple H got to rewrite history. And now to piss all of you guys off... Ric Flair is a pissant compared to the impact and ability (overall ability, which is what actually matters over "workrate") of Hulk Hogan and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin.
Posted By: cpbasil (Guest) on August 01, 2009 at 10:43 AM
When you consider the type of playoff he had, I'd love to see Rajon Rondo come in and bitch slap Randy Orton. Randy vs. Rondo! It has a nice ring to it.
Posted By: The Great Capt. Smooth (Guest) on August 01, 2009 at 10:51 AM
If they can give Festus that big break, then he might still have a job. When they put him against the Undertaker on Smackdown last year, I thought that would be the turning point of his career as a singles wrestler.
Posted By: oh great (Guest) on August 01, 2009 at 12:35 PM
No Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson on your makes = INSTANT EPIC FAIL!
Posted By: Guest#2025 (Guest) on August 01, 2009 at 12:40 PM
Your decisions to think guys should be fired is based on the fact that you dont like them, or know enough about them. It is a fact that some wrestlers are not good but wanting Hornswaggle and Knox fired is silly, just because they do not give you that special feeling that Legacy does means nothing. Hawkins has lots of talent and has had no chance of showing off his singles skills yet, what makes you think he does not deserve that chance? Kip and BG have not wrestled in months and are agents guy.
Posted By: Guest#8282 (Guest) on August 01, 2009 at 01:05 PM
Why haven't we gotten a Jericho/Miz feud on Raw yet? Those would be the best segments in the show.
Posted By: ??? (Guest) on August 01, 2009 at 01:27 PM
New Age Outlaws haven't wrestled in TNA for a long long LONG time. Gunn jobbed to Kong once recently but that was it.
Posted By: duh (Guest) on August 01, 2009 at 02:08 PM
"Shaq did it and we all know that Kobe must one-up Shaq at everything!"
naww, guest hosting wouldn't be his thing.......besides, he's gonna one up Shaq when he wins his 5th ring next yr. and bring us to #16 in the process. Brock hosting would be interesting though.
Posted By: cj (Guest) on August 01, 2009 at 04:25 PM
The whole reason I joined Twitter is to read Jericho's posts. The one about taking his daughters to the movies was funny too!
Posted By: Chris (Guest) on August 01, 2009 at 04:26 PM
"Why isn't THE ROCK on your list of athletes?
Well... ex-athletes anyway."
Simply put, the man is rated G in the movie industry nobody gives a shit about him anymore.
Why isnt Will Ferrel or Bret Hart on the list...
What about paul Heyman, or Mich Foley or Kurk Angel anyone from tna would be funny.
Posted By: bee (Guest) on August 01, 2009 at 04:41 PM
"then force himself on Stephanie McMahon. Oops....that last one was a little uncalled for. Ahh screw it....it's Kobe!"

James Laurinaitis will bust in the NFL, by the way! Pile jumper!
Posted By: WMD (Guest) on August 01, 2009 at 06:45 PM
Flair v Hitman wrestlemania 26?? i hope not.
I dont agree with Rampage and Lesnar as Raw guest GMs. Watching wrestling is about suspended disbalief and UFC fighters in a ring with performers just confuses things things. The Rock on the other hand would be an nice suprise.
Posted By: Prymus (Guest) on August 01, 2009 at 07:03 PM
Is the Y2J/Miz thing like a good natured thing or do they legit not like each other? I can't imagine WWE supporting Jericho bashing their talent like JTG "get wrestling lessons" in a public forum if they knew it wasn't just friendly feuding.
Posted By: Guest#3639 (Guest) on August 01, 2009 at 07:34 PM
Rampage would be so AWESOME!!! Book it!!
Posted By: Guest#3080 (Guest) on August 01, 2009 at 07:43 PM
The Miz Vs. Y2J?
Plz make it happen.
Even more awesome would be if John Morrison evened up the odds against the Unified Tag Team Champs.
Even better would be if they became the Unified Tag Team Champs. U know they deserve it.
And what is it with the Dirt Sheet? Why is it still on? Not that I am complaining mind you.

Wow, no wonder this site has to hire new writers every year. What a shitty article, made up of who you think needs to be fired, other people's Twitters, and random speculation based on other people's reports. Next week, you can comment on people's comments like that insecure Jeremy "Not Larry Csonka" Thomas hack. Have fun with that.

If Lesnar was a guest host on RAW i'd explode with excitement.
Posted By: Parxy (Guest) on August 02, 2009 at 07:15 AM
I love wrestling logic.
Instead of quickly taking the headband that's been pulled over your eyes off, swing wildly for 15 seconds while your opponent stands just out of the way.
Posted By: The Mysterious WankerX (Guest) on August 02, 2009 at 01:15 PM
Of your 11 guest hosts for Raw, I have heard of 5, and watched on TV 3 of them. So I respectfully disagree with your list.
Just because these guys generate "heat" in their sport doesn't mean anything to the WWE. Now, If you had 10 athletes that are known, and have "heat" outside of their sports, you would have something.
To that end, I am narrowing your list down to:
Mike Tyson and Brock Lesnar. Dishonourable mention of Kobe.
Posted By: Paul in Canada (Guest) on August 02, 2009 at 03:24 PM
Jeff is leaving? WTF? That sucks. Why would he anyway? He's getting a huge push. Let Jeff smoke all the pot he wants and keep him on the roster.
Posted By: AWSOME69 (Guest) on August 02, 2009 at 03:32 PM
cpbasil, I see your point a little bit, but what is your definition of "Overall Ability"?
Is it the ability to draw fans, as well as workrate? Or are you just talking putting "asses in seats" charisma?
If it's the latter, it really wasn't until Bret Hart went up against HBK that he was putting more asses in the seats.
Workrate-wise, Bret and Flair were really about even(Being both competitors loved the KISS method). Flair DID have better opponents than Bret did, and this is where I feel Flair had better "ass in seats" charisma than Bret did (but remember, this is a fact-based opinion). Flair did manage to sell out arena, after arena, while when Bret was catching fire, it wasn't the case.
So, you'd need to give a better definition of "overall" attributes before you say one is better than the other.

To anyone who claims that Bret wasn't a draw, Wembley Stadium for Summerslam '92 was sold as much on Bret's name as Bulldog's. Flair might have an advantage in the US, but Bret was the bigger international draw. And the Korean supershow Flair did doesn't count since the fucking government literally forced people to show up to that so they wouldn't look bad.

Carlito to go? No way! My Raw viewing is hanging on a very thin thread these days (even though I really like Legacy), and 'Lito is a big reason why I still watch.
I would keep Mike Knox too. He's not a main eventer, but the big scary mountain man style guy has a place in wrestling in my view.
As for the top 10, as a Northern Irishman, I have heard of 2 of the top 10....get Robbie Keane on there and we'd be talking, haha.
Isn't Mike Tyson a mental and emotional wreck now? Him presenting Raw would most likely be very awkward and slightly depressing.
